Concrete Accessories Product Categories

Anchoring

Anchoring products can be either embedded in curing concrete, or installed afterwards. The

intent is to fasten, hold, or hang materials such as studs or pipes to concrete structures.

Wire

Wire products are used to secure objects in place during a pour or in transport. Annealed

wire is softened low carbon steel wire giving it excellent flexibility and making it ideal for

binding.

Forming

Removable and reusable stakes to hold forms in place during a pour. Available in various

shapes and diameters to meet building codes.

Bar Supports

Designed to hold reinforcing steel in position while the concrete is poured and sets for

a variety of applications including slab, tilt-up, precast and D.O.T. SteelLinx metal bar

supports are manufactured to meet or exceed the recommendations of the (CRSI) Concrete

Reinforcing Steel Institute. Plastic bar supports are manufactured to strict tolerances from

recycled resins and available in various shapes to serve the same purpose as wire bar chairs.

County code calls for finish, diameter, length and washer

type. West of Rockies – in bags with nut only – square

washers bought separately. East of Rockies – in cartons

with nut and washer. Coastal areas generally require

galvanized product and heavier duty bolts and washers

than interior areas due to climate and weather related

conditions

Washers, straps, mudsill anchors

Anchor bolts meet ASTM F1554 for anchor bolts and

ASTM A153 Class C if galvanized. Grade 36 with class 1A

Gauge wire (16 to 17GA); finish of black or EG; length of

bar tie; count per bag (single roll of 4000, single of 5000

or 4 rolls of 1000)

Generally no finish because the product is left in the

concrete pour and is not exposed o the elements. The

wire is annealed, meaning it is heated to leave the wire

soft so it is pliable. Import wire is coated with oil to prevent

rusting before use. Lower gauge odes not imply inferrior

product it is just more pliable. Currently have stocked IN

Lowes items / Dealer items

A big chunk of our business goes through Lowes and some of those items cross over with typical dealer items. We recently

created duplicate SKU's to segregate these two piles of inventory. This will protect forecasts, separate demand and

ultimately reduce cost on non-N/A product.

Importing

Why Import?

Why are import costs so competitive with domestic?

Products are very labor intensive. generally hand milled, labeled and loaded

Wire is drawn down (cold rolled) from billets of steel into smaller diameter, either rods or wire spools

Products are hand welded, threaded, labled and packed.

16

Importing

Import Sources

Where BlueLinx Sources

China – All metal, plastic

There is anti-dumping on threaded rod from China

India – Nail Stakes, Threaded Rod

Also make anchor bolts, but not as competitively as

China

Domestic – bar supports, plastic chairs

Where does it come from?

China – about 80%, over 200 containers annually

Domestic manufacturers – about 13%

Domestic fill in – about 4%

India – about 3%, a dozen containers or so

Korea/Mexico – less than 1%

Duties and Tariffs

Countervailing Duties

Charges levied against a product coming from a particular mill in a particular country. Penalty against where you are

importing a certain product from. i.e. as importer of record we pay 10.63% from most mills we buy AD fasteners from.

Harmonized Tariffs

Products are all classified into harmonized tariff code and a percentage tariff is assigned to those codes. Penalty for

importing a certain product in the first place. i.e 2.9% added to our FOB cost on Bar Ties.

Dumping

Occurs when manufacturers export a product to another country at a price either below the price charged in its home

market, or in quantities that cannot be explained through normal market competition. An anti-dumping case is opened by

a US based manufacturer who says they cannot compete against product coming from particular country.

The US Department of Commerce enforces anti-dumping tariffs on the importer of record for products they deem are

being dumped by a specific country.

Currently we cannot buy Threaded Rod (active) from China or Galvanized Wire (under review) from China/Mexico because

of anti-dumping cases.

17

Importing

How does it get here?

BlueLinx imported over 200 Concrete Accessory shipping containers in 2011. About 85% were 20' containers and the

remainder were 40' containers.

Our loads are booked through OOCL when we are importer of record, otherwise a broker handles the ocean freight.

As importer of record we have visibility into and update the following information:

• When container space is booked

• vessel sail date and ETA to port

• container number

• ETA in transit

Our expectations on import containers from time of booking should be +/- two weeks to account for booking, ocean travel

and stateside travel. This gap certainly closes when we start to track a moving vessel. At time of departure, our systems

are updated with the ETA to port information. Since there is disparity on shipments due to customs, rail and trucking, the

date in our systems defaults to 7 days after port ETA.

SALES ALERT: Not all customers or BlueLinx locations have the necessary equipment to unload containers. This can be

a costly error when a container shows up and can take a profitable order and turn it to a loser. Please see Appendix pg. 29 for

guidelines to determine if your customer or facility is capable of properly unloading a shipping container.

18

Importing

Buyer Beware

Brokers and competitors alike will play games with specifications to gain a competitive advantage. Most products are

nominal so there is room for interpretation. Below are some common examples and how to overcome objections to put us

on a level playing field.

Anchor Bolts - Cutting corners on diameter is one way to gain advantage. Our spec is +/- 10%, so measure against that to

make sure we are quoting apples to apples

Bar Ties - skimming the gauge of the wire or shortening the length results in using less steel. Weigh a roll of our product

vs. a roll of our competitor’s.

Tie Wire - The rolls are called 3.5# rolls as a standard but we have seen all the way down to a 2.75# roll. Our SteelLinx

rolls are 3.25# or our Premium at full 3.5#. Take a box of wire and put it on a scale. Does it weigh 55, 60 or 70 pounds?

Nail Stakes - cheap items like this are sure to have spec games played. Customers are always looking for the best price

on this item. The diamater is where you save cost on this item and it is easy to spot.

Bar Supports - a bundle of bar supports, much less a pallet of bar supports is difficult to count. If you send 19 pieces per

bundle as opposed to 20, you are already taking 5% out of your cost. Make sure we are quoting against full bundles.

Here is a sample of two anchor bolts, the

left one is from one of our top suppliers

and passed our specifications. The bolt

on the right came from a box a competitor

sold to one of our customers. When placed

side by side there is a visual difference in

both the length and diameter of the anchor

bolt. The diameter is in our tolerance at

10% of full diameter, however, this product

our competitor supplied was de-spec'd

This picture shows a visual difference in

the diameter of nail stakes. These are both

in spec but the one on the right is our

ASTM spec, which is at about 1/16" on the

diameter. The stake on the is our premium

stake which is a full 3/4". We will see other

product from our competition which is

almost 5/8" and not up to ASTM tolerance.

This can be spotted by measuring or with a

side by side comparison like this example.

Selling Concrete Accessories

When to Buy

Consider that concrete accessories are most typically used in the early stages of construction. Most sales are Q1 so the

time to buy is the holiday season.

Sales are more constant in Florida, Texas and California as opposed to northeast climates that make a pour impossible.

Market Info

There are many agencies that establish standards for concrete construction: CRSI, ANSI, ICBO and others.

Architects and engineers design to the specifications set by these agencies.

The project specifications are determined based on the design.

Product demand is driven by these specifications in addition to market norms.

Competition

Two main types of opposition today are other distributors with import product (PrimeSource or Boise) and domestic

manufacturers (Meadow Burke or Dayton Superior).

We do have domestic sources on all of these products, however we sacrifice margin to be competitive.

The market will typically bear a heavy import mix of concrete accessory products.

Features and Benefits

Retail friendly packaging, newly designed labels flow well with our other SteelLinx brand products

BlueLinx is a full line of building products, deeper than most of our distributor competitors

We have a larger footprint than other distributors and manufacturers

It’s our brand, we control our destiny - no manufacturer can fire us

We have an extensive network of vendor partners and can quote thousands of SKUs

We have full spectrum marketing management

21

Selling Concrete Accessories

Overcoming Objections

Objection: “You cost is too high on tie wire, XXXX is selling me at 3% less than that.”

Solution: Go weigh their product to make sure it is the same spec as ours. This could translate for most items...the less

steel used in the final product, the less steel they are being charged for.

This is a sample we got from a customer

at only 2.75#, clearly out of spec

This is a coil of our SteelLinx wire,

meets tolerance at 3.25#

This is our Premium wire which

is a full 3.5# per coil

Objection: “You don’t stock everything I need, I can get from XXXX in a week.”

Solution: We have access to plenty of domestic fill-ins and possible transfer opportunities and have margin built in to cover

until we get import.

Objection: “BlueLinx is always in and out of metal products.”

Solution: As a company, Bluelinx has put a focus on growing metal sales and taking market share of program business.

We are committed to the SteelLinx brand and we control our own destiny.

Objection: “You say you are focused on this but this is new business and products for you. We don’t want to be your

guinea pig.”

Solution: We have done testing in other markets and these mills have been supplying product for a long time. We have

hired experts as Managers of Market Development to make sure we are bringing in good quality products into the right

markets.

Objection: “XXXX services me weekly, can you do that?”

Solution: We are hiring while many others are firing. Our metals team is on a continual path of growth. Additionally, we

have more locations than all our competitors. Our network of facilities and people make it so we can get to our customers

and take care of them right.

Do You Know

The Capabilities of Container Unloading?

Certain questions should be asked when selling a container direct.

How will you pull product out of a container?

1. Maneuvering pallets with a pallet jack is NOT always an option.

2. Dragging pallets with chains can be dangerous, cause product

damage, or break the pallet.

Solution:

Use a lowmast forklift that can fit inside a standard shipping container.

What kind of Dock/Ramp do you have?

1. Not all trailers are the same height

Solution:

1. A self-leveling dock

2. A movable ramp

Why is this important?

1. Customer safety

2. Timeliness

3. Saves $$

4. A true turnaround could mean paying for milage, delays and

branch labor, turning your transaction UPSIDE DOWN!
