Noche Buena:
Sinampalukang Ayungin,
Daing na Bangus, at
Ensaladang Mangga
Kung meron mang isang
pagdiriwang sa buong taon na talaga
namang pinakahihintay ng lahat, ito na
siguro ang Kapaskuhan. Naalala ko noong
araw kahit hindi kami gaanong
nakakariwasa sa buhay nakukuha pa ng
mga magulang ko na maghanda ng
kaunti.
Lalong
masarap ang tsibugan kung may kasabay
na kamatis at sibuyas. Ito ang pagkain para
sa akin. Imbes na tsokolate ang
panghimagas mas tipo ko ang bibingka sa
kanto. Ewan ko ba, siguro ganun lang talaga
akong pinalaki ng magulang ko: sanay sa
simpleng buhay, basta masaya at
magkakasama. Syempre, kapag Pasko
koleksyon. Idagdag pa ang gabi gabing kita
mula sa karoling. Hindi ko ito nagawa
sapagkat mahigpit ang tagubilin ng
VERDE
magulang ko na ang tunay na kahulugan
ng pagiging ninong at ninang ay pagiging
mga pangalawang magulang. Nariyan sila
upang magpayo at mag-aruga, hindi upang
magbigay ng pera. Tama nga sila. Ito rin
ang ipapamana ko sa aking mga anak.
Masaya ang Pasko. Pati nga dating
magkakaaway ay nagkakasundo sa
pagsapit ng Pasko. Doon nga sa amin bote
lang ng gin ang katapat ng Pasko.
Masayang masaya ang Pasko!
Lubos nga tayong pinagpala, subalit,
paano naman ang higit na nakakaraming
wala man lang maisubo sa araw araw?
Paano mo sasabihin sa kanila na masarap
mag-noche buena?Paano naman ang mga
walang masilungan?Paano mo
maipapaliwanag ang kahulugan ng
belen?Paano naman ang mga bata na ulila
sa mga magulang? Paano mo ikakatwiran
na masaya ang Pasko kapiling ang mga
estranghero? Paano ang mga may
sakit?Paano mo sasabihing sana araw-raw
ay maging Pasko?Paano magiging
maligaya ang Pasko para sa kanila? Hindi
ko nilalayon na maging malungkot ang
Pasko para sa mga mambabasa ko. Hindi
ko rin hinihingi na kaawaan ang mga
nabanggit ko. Nag-iisip lang ako na sana
maalala natin sila, na sana mabigyan natin
sila ng panahon. Hindi lang basta tira-tira
sa hapag kainan kundi pagkalinga at
pagmamahal.
Subalit,
“If you woke up this morning with
more health than illness,you are
more blessed than the million who
won’t survive the week.
If you have never experienced the
danger of battle, the loneliness of
imprisonment, the agony of torture
or the pangs of starvation, you are
ahead of 20 million people around
the world.
If you attend a church meeting
without fear of harassment, arrest,
torture, or death, you are more
blessed than almost three billion
people in the world.
If you have food in your refrigerator,
clothes on your back, a roof over
your head and a place to sleep, you
are richer than 75% of this world.
If you have money in the bank, in
your wallet, and spare change in a
dish someplace, you are among the
top 8% of the world’s wealthy.
If your parents are still married and
alive, you are very rare.
If you hold up your head with a
smile on your face and are truly
thankful, you are blessed because
the majority can, but most do not.
If you can read this message, you
are more blessed than over two
billion people in the world that
cannot read anything at all.
You are so blessed in ways you
may never even know.”
Persistence of Memory
4
It is, for better or for worse, man’s lot
to forget.
Seconds fade within hours… days are
forgotten within months… entire years,
even…
So it is with life – most of it will, at one
point in time or another, will seem to have
never happened. Perhaps it could be
said that a one’s age should not be
measured according to how many years
one has lived through but, rather, how
much of life one can remember. After
all, a year lost to memory hardly counts
as being part of one’s life.
Perhaps it could also be said that the
self is but a quilt of memories. Tear a
patch off and we tear a part of ourselves.
What we are, in many, many ways, are
basically who we remember ourselves
to be.
I am not so much of a charlatan to say
that I remember much of the twenty odd
years I supposedly lived through
between this writing and my birth. I
wouldn’t even go so far as to say that I
c a n
remember
what I ate for
lunch last
Tuesday.
Then again,
there are
t h o s e
memories
that endure
the ravages
of time –
some like a
cherished
momento and
some like a
parasitic leech sucking precious lifeblood
from a gaping wound in the flesh. Either
way, they endure because they are so
much a part of me that loosing them will
be tantamount to some sort of
psychological identity suicide.
As anybody who has had the pleasure
(masochistic or otherwise) of gracing the
hollowed halls of De La Salle University
Dasmariñas could profess, University life
is in no great shortage of memories.
Between its fair share of deep-seated
psychological scars and triumphant
euphoria, it should come to no surprise that
glimpses of the University be the last lapses
of memory before total senility sets in.
Without uncertain terms nor motives to
curry anybody’s favor do I say that my
College life (all four years of it) was the
happiest span of time I’ve had the chance
to be tortured under. True enough, there
were times when I would rather seal
myself in a corrugated cardboard box
and mail myself to Dubai but, in hindsight,
I couldn’t imagine myself being anywhere
else. Cliché as it might sound, it’s really
inevitable for someone to fully appreciate
something after its gone.
Then again, some may even have the
chance to avoid losing everything, if not
anything at all. For all the wideness of
this enormous Earth of ours, there are
some of us who chose to stay behind.
Some of us, so it goes, were meant to
remember.
While our motto has been changed from
“Excellence built on Tradition” to
something a bit longer and less catchy,
the words should nonetheless ring true
for all of us. While progress depends
strictly on new ideas and innovations, it
is tradition that keeps the structure from
collapsing on itself.
It hasn’t been too long since I graduated.
Not right now when I’m writing this, at
least. A few months ago, I was still
scouring the campus down to bring my
grades up to passing levels. A few months
later and I find myself working here.
College life is still as fresh as freshlypicked
tomatoes in the tomato patch of
my head. Heraldo Filipino, my beloved
spouse of all four years of my stay as a
student, continues to welcome me daily
Perhaps it could be said
that a one’s age should
not be measured
according to how many
years one has lived
through but, rather, how
much of life one can
remember.
during lunch, snacks and several
scattered minutes between eight in the
morning and the wee hours after five in
the afternoon. I would say that nothing
much has changed if not for all the
buildings and facilities that seemed to
have popped up during the summer.
I would love to say that things haven’t
changed much.
I really would.
But they have.
OPINION
father president
RANDEE CALDERON
Leaving La Salle
I wasn’t able to write as often as I
could have recently. Perhaps there was
just too much workload at the office, or
things were too hectic at my graduate
studies. But either way, I was able to
write just a few thoughts on my mind the
past few days, yet I wasn’t able to jot
them down on paper.
But I have been thinking deeply about a
lot of things lately. I have just made an
important decision in my life about a month
ago. After telling a few of my friends about
this choice, it was not surprising that I
received tons of mixed reactions.
Some people say it would definitely be good
for me to venture into parts unknown and
try out new stuff. It was about time I made
a career move, as part of my undying
principle to always try out new things and
rediscover myself along the process.
Some people, on the other hand, kept on
insisting that I stay with my current
profession, and leaving my alma mater
would not be a good choice for me at
this moment. There could have been so
many things I could have done for the
school, and in the process I could still have
developed myself, like what I have
always done in the past.
But then again, the world changes, and
there is no doubt that our goals change
as well. Every moment of our lives are
based upon the results of the decisions
we make. Indeed, even if there are things
that are far beyond our control, we can
never deny that life is a choice. And as
strong as it may sound, a lot of people
live and die by the choices they make,
myself included.
they would be earning tons of money in
a month which they would never earn
in a lifetime here in this country.
A lot of people have already asked me
if I would want to leave this forsaken
country and try out my luck abroad. But
after living away from “home” for so
many years, I just told them that I am
not ready to leave yet. Not yet. But
perhaps, in the future I eventually will.
It would either be because I have no
choice or because I’m just too fed up
with the rotten bureaucracy that is
eating this country bit by bit.
Every moment of our
lives are based upon the
results of the decisions
we make.
VERDE
This decision has made me thought about
the countless people leaving our country
for greener pastures abroad. I myself am
a witness to this being a person who has
lived more years abroad than here.
Definitely you can not help but compare
about the current state we are in and the
kind of living other people have in other
countries. Most of my relatives are
already (or have already) left for
America, thinking that perhaps they
would eventually find the pot of gold
buried underneath the grueling
discrimination, endless battles for simple
jobs, and paying long overdue apartment
rents abroad. A lot of my close friends
have eventually turned into studying
nursing and care giving claiming that it
would be the best job they could get and
But there is no doubt that I still love this
country, amidst the corruption and red
tape it lashes out to its hapless citizens.
Even if Congress manages to pass new
tax laws, and all the AFP officials turn
out to be people who live lives like that
of a General being accused of
corruption, that the DepEd still approves
the wrong textbooks, or that the price
of potatoes still cost more than 60
Pesos a kilo, I would still love this
country.
I am certainly not trying to be a martyr
with these statements, nor am I trying
to rationalize my stay here as of this
RIO L. RAMOS
Ako…
lagi na lang ako…
6
Bago ang lahat, nais ko munang
magbigay ng pagkilala sa
kasalukuyang miyembro ng
Heraldo Filipino (HF), ang opisyal
na pahayagan ng mga estudyante
ng De La Salle Univeristy –
Dasmarinas (DLSU-D). Naging
makulay (at nawa’y makabuluhan)
ang nakaraang semestre para sa
kanila. Samu’t-saring paghamon
at mga pagsubok sa kanilang
kakayahan at pasensya ang
inabot ng grupong ito. Bilang
dating manunulat ng naturang
pahayagan, isa ako sa mga taong
naapektuhan sa naturang
pangyayari. Ito ay dala marahil sa
isa ako sa labis na nagpahalaga at
nangalaga sa pangalan ng HF. At
kung anumang isyu at mga
pangungutya ang ipinupukol dito
ay tila isang dagok sa mga taong
nag-iingat at nagbibigay
importansya dito, gaya ko. Higit
kailanpaman, ang mahalaga ay
ang pagpapahayag lamang ng
katotohanan, at tanging
katotohanan lamang. Subalit kung
sa pagsulat at pagpapahayag ng
katotohanan ay nakakaligtaan
ang responsibilidad na maging
pantay o patas, ang pagrespeto
sa isinusulat at mambabasa, at
ang paglimot sa kung ano ang
makakakabuti para sa lahat,
mawawalan ng saysay ang
kagustuhang makapagpahayag
ng katotohanan. Mahirap ang
pagbalanse ng mga bagay-bagay,
subalit ito ang mas mahalaga.
Ang responsibilidad ng isang
manunulat ay nakasalalay sa
kaniyang pagiging tapat, balanse,
at pagiging objektive, sa lahat ng
bagay… sa lahat ng panahon.
Palagi na lang ako…
Nakakatuwang panoorin ang
isang komersyal ng sabon ngayon,
kung saan binibigyan ng labis na
pansin ang isang batang lalaki. Sa
kanyang pagsasalaysay ang batang
lalaki ay nagsasalaysay ng kaniyang
karanasan bilang estudyante. Tila
may kaunting pagkayamot sa
kaniyang mga tinig…”Ako, lagi na
lang ako…” sa kanyang pagsambit ng
mga katagang yaon, tila nagsasawa
na siya sa labis na pagbibigay
pahalaga sa kaniya ng kanyang guro
at klasmeyts…lalong-lalo na sa mga
gawain sa kanilang paaralan. Ang
naturang kasikatan ay dala ng
kaputian ng kaniyang uniporme.
Pasalamat kay inay dahil sa paggamit
niya ng isang mahusay na sabong
panlaba
Ṡubalit, sa isang banda ang
karanasan ng batang iyon ay
maihahambing ko sa karanasan ng
isang tunay na voluntir. Kung susuriin
ng maigi, hindi nalalayo ang iskrip ng
batang lalaki sa tunay na nagaganap
sa mga taong tunay na nagtatalaga
ng kanilang mga sarili sa paglilingkod
ng walang bayad.
Natatandaan ko pa
nang una akong
nagvoluntir. Ito ay
nang ako ay sumali
sa Star Scout sa
aming paaralan. Dito
ko unang naranasan
ang konsepto ng
volunterismo. Bagaman,
hindi ko ito labis na
naunawaan noon, alam ko
na sa aking maliit na
p a m a m a r a a n ,
nakapaglingkod ako ng
walang kabayaran bilang
star scout. Malaki ang
paghanga ko sa mga
taong nakikibahagi sa mga gawaing
nangangailangan ng voluntaryong
pagkilos. Ilan dito ay ang mga
miyembrong boy scouts or girl
scouts, ang Philippine National Red
Cross, Bantay Bata, gayundin
naman ang magigiting na advocates
ng iba’t-ibang civil society
organizations, tulad ng BAYAN,
Rotary Clubs at iba pang people’s at
non-governmental organizations .
Maituturing din na mga voluntirs ang
mga estudyanteng lider o miyembro
ng iba’t – ibang organisasyon sa
kanilang paaralan. Nandyan
halimbawa ang Student Council,
Student Publication, at Social Action
Office. Nabigyan ako ng
pagkakataon na maging bahagai ng
isang voluntaryong organisasyon
nang ako’y nag-aaral pa. Bilang
voluntir ng Social Action Office,
maaga akong namulat sa mga
gawaing nangangailangan ng
voluntaryong pagseserbisyo.
Ano nga ba ang
volunterismo? Sa simpleng
pagpapakahulugan, ito ay maaring
sabihin na paglilingkod na walang
hinihinging kabayaran o kapalit. Sa
pag-uugaling pinoy, ito ay maaring
maihalintulad sa konsepto ng
bayanihan, na kung saan kusa at
bukal sa loob ang pagtulong sa mga
nangangailangan. Subalit, sa mas
malalim na banda ang volunterismo
ay isang pamamaraan upang
tumugon sa mga hamon ng
nagbabagong lipunan at ang patuloy
na pagpapaunlad ng pamumuhay –
ng tinutulungan at ng tumutulong.
Sa larangan ng social development
ang volunterismo ay isang efektibong
paraan o istratehiya upang lubos na
maisakatuparan ang layuning
Greening The Roots:
A LEGACY OF A LIFETIME
by MJ Morales
Every graduate steps into the
real world. After years of study in
the four walls of the classroom, he
will embark on a journey that would
lead to several changes, challenges,
hallmarks and achievements. Every
step shall take him to his dreams.
Every step would be a reason to look
back.
Every Lasallian professional will
yearn to come back, to come home
to the very foundation of his
learning. Successful or not, there is
always the urge to come back to
one’s alma mater. This is the core
purpose for the project being
prepared by the De La Salle Alumni
Association (DLSAA) in
cooperation with the Environmental
Resource Management Center
(ERMAC). The project entitled:
“Greening the Roots” is set during
the Lasallian Week 2005
celebration. This is a tree-planting
activity that will start from Gate 1
aiming to cover the entire campus.
The whole day event will be a
community service and a fund
raising activity of the DLSAA and
VERDE
ERMAC. The event aims to actively
involve the alumni members in the
tree-planting project. This will also
assist ERMAC in raising funds for
its future activities. At the same
time, the event shall also raise a
starting fund for the Alumni
Tulungan Center.
The Association will send letters
to 50 identified alumni members
who are willing to sponsor planting
a tree for a minimum amount of Php
1,000.The tree will be named after
the sponsor and it will be reflected
on a tree plate together with the
tree’s scientific name and the date
of planting. This project will further
enhance the environmental aspect
of the campus. It will also serve as
a gauge for future joint projects not
limited to tree-planting activity. It
will provide the alumni members
the opportunity to come back and
actively serve the Lasallian
community or participate in various
projects of the institution, as well.
And finally, the project will draw on
the sense of community building
between the alumni members and
the Lasallian community.
Message of Joy S. Parohinog,
Chair of Committee on Special Projects
“Greening the Roots” is a community
service of the Alumni Association in response
to its contribution to the Lasallian community.
We’re giving an opportunity for our alumni
members to come back and make a difference
in our beloved institution. So, through this
project with ERMAC, it will be achieved.
“Greening the Roots” will also serve as an
avenue to formally launch the Alumni
Tulungan Center, which is one of the major
projects of the association in response to the
needs of our Alumni members. It shall be the
key to providing assistance in any way, like
volunteering. There’s a saying that you will
never realize the joy of coming back home, if
you have never left your home. So, since our
alumni have left our home, they’re going to
share their blessings now through this project.
So in a way, we can help the Lasallian
community, our association, and the school
itself. From the word itself, “roots” stands for
the home, which is the school, and “greening”
injects the environmental aspect of the project.
It gives the impression that we are making our
home lusher and it signifies that our concern
for nature is alive and it is thriving. Some might
ask why still plant more trees in DLSU-D,
where obviously we have lots of it. The thing
is: we have to preserve our environment more,
because there are a lot of trees in the university,
which are deteriorating as we speak. So, as
early as now, we should make ways to
preserve the beauty of the school. This is
something that we are proud of, it’s something
that we have that other schools do not have,
and for that we take responsibility in
maintaining the uniqueness of our school.”
“Greening the Roots” is slated on
January 21, 2005. For inquiries, please feel
free to contact the Alumni Office.
FEATURES
ALUMNI TULUNGAN CENTER
Revolutionizing
community work
…Above all, let your love for one another be intense, because love
covers a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without
complaining. As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one
another as good stewards of God’s varied grace.
1 Peter 5:8-11
In an effort to strengthen its commitment to help fellow Lasallians
and other needy individuals, the De La Salle Alumni Association came
up with an alternative community service program aptly coined Alumni
Tulungan Center.
The program is an alternative approach mainly because it deviates
from the traditional dole-outs. The Center shall employ electronic media
such as sending information through sms and e-mails. Information
may range from the simplest to the most complex concerns. Simple
concerns may come in the forms of reunions, referrals, endorsements,
job opportunities, news and updates. Complex matters may be
emergency help for medical attention, volunteering in times of
calamities, counseling, mortuary assistance, and a host of others. The
ATC shall serve as the bridge between and among those who need
help and those who are willing to help.
According to Nathz Golla, project head of ATC, “The Alumni
Tulungan Center will redefine the essence of community work. In a
nutshell, ATC best demonstrates the Association’s quest to empower
alumni to play a significant role in community building”.
Aside from sending sms and e-mails, traditional method of
communication shall also be utilized such as snail mail and landline
telephone. This is to ensure that a great number of alumni will be
reached. To prove its resolve to meet its noble objectives, the
Association will commission a cellular network for its information
dissemination. The Office has also acquired modern office equipment
to enhance alumni services. The Association is also building and
updating its database to fortify the ATC program.
ATC
W E B P A G
8
Those who want to avail the services of ATC are required to fill up
the ATC Form (may be downloaded from the Association’s webpage
or may be secured from the Alumni Office) and submit the same to the
Alumni Office. The nearest relative may accomplish the form in behalf
of the needy individual. Upon approval of the information submitted,
ATC shall transmit the information to as many alumni and volunteers
as possible through electronic and traditional media. Aside from the
random sending of information, ATC shall also look for sponsors and
donors who are willing to provide in kind and/or in cash. The network
of volunteers and alumni shall ensure that “calls for help” will be
passed on to other responsible members of the community as ATC
preaches the principle of “pass/pay it forward”.
The ATC is not limited to information dissemination, volunteers and
alumni may also avail of services like job opportunities, referrals,
mortuary assistance, and soon even medical support. The good news
is that ATC is open to all members of the Lasallian community. The
idea is to build a network of Lasallians all to willing to help other
people in their own special way. The launching of ATC will be done
during the homecoming on April 2005, however, the Center is now
operational. Currently, ATC is accepting volunteers to broaden its
network and scope. Interested parties may visit the Alumni Office at
Severino delas Alas Hall, De La Salle University- Dasmariñas or may
send e-mail to nsgolla@dasma.dlsu.edu.ph.
Ricky Ocampo: The Man of the Hour
10
Ricky Ocampo
PICTURE
This year’s recipient of the
most prestigious award Gawad Alumni
is none other than Roderick L. Ocampo.
The Gawad Alumni is a double whammy
for Ricky because he was also the
awardee of the Most Outstanding
Alumnus in the Field of Business in 2003.
Having parents that are very
much into business, Ricky, even at a very
young age was exposed to the importance
of hard work. A Business Management
graduate of De La Salle University-
Dasmariñas, Ricky’s career path shows
his belief in the value of experience,
hardwork , and entrepreneurship. His
undergraduate thesis paved the way to
the creation of the First Macro Bank in
Dasmariñas, Cavite. Presently, with the
nine (9) branches in place, Ricky saw
the need to innovate FMB’s savings and
loans products in order to remain
competitive against other commercial
banks. However, more than the profit
Ricky had other things in mind. He
wanted to promote the value of saving
money among the youth. With this
intention, he coordinated with the biggest
high school in the area and started the
Kiddie Savers Club. Over 3,600 students
benefited from the program. He also
extended assistance to his alma mater
by way of salary loans to the faculty
members of DLSU-D.
Because of his genuine love for the
poor, Ricky never fails to introduce
innovations especially in the area of
microfinance. He is an ardent follower
of the theory of Professor Muhammad
Yunus that states, “If the poor are
provided with working capital, they can
generate positive self employment
without external assistance.” This is the
primary reason he initiated livelihood
programs which have been given
recognition by high profile institutions
including the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas,
The Philippine Daily Inquirer, and the
MABS-USAID Foundation. Specifically,
Ricky spearheaded the Sikap Loan
Program, a microfinance program, that
offers collateral free loans to women
who would like to engage in small
businesses. Sikap has served7,500
families and disbursed 24 million pesos.
Still under the leadership of Ricky, the
Lupang Pangkabuhayan was
conceptualized and implemented. The
project mainly help clients have a land of
their own and have their livelihood in their
own backyard. Ricky subdivided a 12
hectare farm into 500 sq meters
providing enough room for a small house
and an area tilling or raising their
livestock.
As an employer, all the employees
who were interviewed had all good words
for Ricky. He was admired for his
commitment and professionalism. But
above all, people love Ricky for his heart
for the less privileged. His programs are
not just profit-oriented but Christian and
Lasallian. As a family man, it would be
an understatement to say that he is a
good provider. He is basically your
ordinary son and husband with not so
ordinary drive to succeed. The man is
driven by the inner longing to help and to
help.
Ladies and gentlemen, the man of the
hour: Roderick L. Ocampo, the Gawad
Alumni 2004 Awardee.
B. O. T. ELECTION
Crudo new president
Ten board of trustees were elected at large
during the annual alumni homecoming held
on April 24, at the Museum Complex. The
new BOT received a fresh mandate to lead
the association for another two years.
After the election, the BOT elected among
themselves, in a parliamentary procedure, Dr.
Alvin Crudo as president. Dr. Crudo who was
unopposed is the former college representative
of the College of Radiologic Technology and
the incumbent dean of the College of Medical
Radiation Technology at the De La Salle
University-Health Sciences Campus. Dr. Crudo
gained the support of majority of the attendees
of the homecoming as he emerged on top of
the ten elected board of trustees.
No less than the Executive Vice President
Dr. Estrellita Gruenberg sworn to office the
new officers during a dinner at the Palikpik
Seafoods Restaurant. Dr. Gruenberg
mentioned the thrusts of her administration
in partnership with the different sectors
particularly the alumni. The Association
pledged its support to the vision of the new
First Quadrant? Legacy? Igen? Uniload?
No, CSOAA is not to join the bandwagon of
MLM (multi level marketing) ventures. The
CSOAA is to implement its own MLM
program aptly called “Makatulong Lagi sa
Mahihirap “ that will be launched in a
community outreach on December.
As a business platform, MLM is slowly
getting its recognition and popularity in the
business world. Almost all sectors of the
society are jumping into this scheme of
networking as method of boosting business.
In a nutshell, MLM is mainly characterized
by aggressive marketing, personalized
approach, and charismatic appeal. The same
practices shall be used by CSOAA to
implement its MLM community outreach
program except that no “pairing bonus”nor
percentage in the gross sales will be given.
The idea of the MLM program was
originally conceptualized by Walter Castillo,
board of trustee, as he said “What if we spread
the Good News the manner MLM practitioners
recruit members? Perhaps we will earn
EVP for the institution . As a proof of their
dedication and commitment, the Association
vowed to provide quality service as reflected
on the line up of activities for their two-year
term. Priority projects include the scholarship
program, annual awards, alumni services,
fund-raising, community service, information
dissemination, and special projects like
Greening the Roots, Alumni Tulungan
Center, Visitation of the Sick, Rosary Crusade,
and many others.
The other BOT who were elected are
Nathaniel Golla, vice president; Joy
Parohinog, corporate secretary; Deodoro
Abiog II, treasurer; Joseph Dinglasan,
auditor while Dr. Jonathan Gatchalian, Dr.
Olive Legaspi, Neil Villanueva, Dr. Nieves
Servida, and Peter Joseph Fauni, shall serve
as board members.
To complete the roster of BOT, the
following shall serve as college
representatives: Gerardo Sergio III and Jose
Restrivera, College of Business
Administration; Rosello Rudas, College of
Science; Rowena Mercado, College of
Secretarial Administration; Alrien Dausan,
College of Law Enforcement; Dr. Maria
Bernadette Daplas, College of Nursing and
Midwifery; Wiziel Filipino, College of
International Hospitality; Joel Espedido;
College of Education; Annaliza Cavite,
College of Technology; Rosalinda Legaspi,
Graduate School of Business; Wilson
Jacinto, Graduate School of Education, Arts
and Sciences; Adriano Herrera, College of
Radiologic Technology; and Joel Refuerzo,
College of Liberal Arts.
CSOAA initiates MLM program
millions…of converts?” Members of CSOAA
are from different religious affiliations but in
unison in giving glory to God by serving
others. In a board meeting, the association
approved the proposal to conduct a bolder
approach to community service program.
The details of the CSO’s MLM is yet to be
polished however fund-raising efforts will be
initiated to fund the program. The officers
are confident that the program will meet its
objectives primarily because most of the
C.S.O. Alumni
Dr. Gruenberg leads the oath-taking of the
newly elected B.O.T.
CSOAA are MLM practitioners who know
to employ tactics to win recruits. This time
however these MLM professionals will
have a different goal, a noble goal that is.
Incidentally, the CSOAA approved the
resolution to revise the constitution
specifically on the composition of the board.
As a result, the positions of president, vice
president, secretary, treasurer, and auditor
have been repealed. Instead, all officers
shall be board members and a presiding
officer shall be assigned. This is to instill
an atmosphere of family relations rather
than the formality of an organization
structure.
Present during the last meeting were
Peter Joseph Fauni, Walter Castillo, Melanie
Torres, Maribeth Ihap, Nathz Golla, and
Dheng Remulla. Interested parties to join
CSOAA activities may contact any officer
or may leave a message at the Alumni
LAGI NALANG AKO continuation from page 6...
mapaunlad ang mga pamumuhay
ng mga naghihikahos, marginalized,
at naaping sektor ng ating lipuan.
Base sa aking karanasan
bilang isang voluntir, ang
volunterismo ay maaring umikot sa
apat na mahahalagang konsepto.
Una, ang volunterismo ay
ang mismong pang-araw araw na
buhay ng isang voluntir. Ito ay
nakaugat na sa kaibuturan ng
kaniyang puso kung kaya’t ang
pagtulong at paglilingkod ng walang
inaasahang kabayaran ay tunay na
naipapakita sa kaniyang uri ng
pamumuhay. Ang isang voluntir ay
hindi mag-aatubiling tulungan ang
isang matanda na tumawid sa daan
o ‘di naman kaya ang magkusang
tulungan ang isang batang
nawawala. Gayundin, ang simpleng
pagpulot ng balat ng kendi na
nakakalat upang itapon sa
basurahan. Ito ay ilan lamang sa
praktikal na pruweba kung saan na
ang pagiging isang voluntir ay
maipapakita sa natural na
kagustuhang makatulong kahit sa
maliit na pamamaraan lamang.
Kasabay din nito, ang
voluntersimo ay isang paraan ng
pagkatuto. Sa pamamagitan ng
pagsasagawa ng mga tungkuling
kalakip, napapaunlad ang mga
kakayahan at nalilinang ang kaisipan
ng isang voluntir. Higit sa lahat ang
pagkatuto ay hindi lamang sa
kaisipan at kakayanan, subalit
kasama dito ang pagkatuto ng
kalooban. Sa pagkakataong ito, dito
nabubuo o ‘di naman kaya
naisasabuhay ang mga pag-uugali
patungkol sa pakikipag-kapwa tao.
Ang isang volunteer blood donor ay
nakatututong magbahagi ng kanyang
sarili sa isang taong nanganganib ang
buhay. Hindi lamang ang voluntir ang
nabibigyan ng kaalaman kundi pati
ang taong tinutulungan. Ang isang
out-of-school-youth na tinutulungan
ng isang volunteer street educator ay
natututong magbasa at ‘di naman
kaya ay magsulat. Sa kabialng
banda, ang street educator, sa
proseso ng kaniyang pagtuturo ay
maaring matutunan at mas
mabigyan niya ang pagpapahalaga sa
pag-aaral.
Sa pagiging bahagi din ng
isang voluntaryong gawain,
nagkakaroon ng pagkakataon na
madiskubre ang sarili. Tulad nga ng
nabanggit, dito maaaring higit na
madiskubre ang kakayahan ng isang
voluntir, kung ano ang puwede niyang
ibahagi, at gayundin ang pagkakaroon
ng klarifikasyon ukol sa kung ano ang
gusto at layunin niya sa kanyang
buhay. Ito din ay nanganghulugan
ng pagsasakripisyo ng oras, lakas at
materyal na yaman.
Higit sa lahat, ang
volunterismo ay isang ispiritwal na
karanasan. Ang volunterismo ay
isang vokasyon…isang malalim na
ay hindi nawawalan ng pag-asa sa
kabila ng masalimuot na kalagayan
LCDC in action
ng isang pamumuhay…nakikita niya
ang kagandahan ng buhay sa kabila
ng pagdarahop ng kaniyang
kapwa…kinikilala niya na siya ay
isang instrumento upang ipadama sa
kaniyang kapwa ang mapagkalingang
paggagabay ng Poong Maykapal. Sa
mga mukha ng mga tinutulungan ng
VERDE
isang voluntir ay dito niya nakikita ang
refleksyon ng kaniyang sariling buhay,
na kung saan siya mismo ay
nangangailangan ng tulong ng
kaniyang kapwa, at higit sa lahat
biyaya ng Maykapal.
Ang pagiging isang
voluntir ay isang tawag…hindi
maisasakatuparan ang tunay na
layunin ng volunterismo kung hindi
bukal sa loob ang pagtugon. Katulad
ng batang lalaki sa komersyal ng
sabon, ang isang voluntir ay naging
handa sa anumang oras o
pagkakataon…handang
isakatuparan ang mga gawain na
makakapagpaunlad ng kaniyang
kapwa at lipunang
ginagalawan…handa siyang
manguna sa mga pagkilos na
makakapagpalaya ng iba mula sa
kahirapan…at higit sa lahat, malugod
niyang tinatanggap ang pagtatalaga
sa kaniya ng Poong Maykapal bilang
instrumento ng pag-asa, pagbabago,
at pagmamahal…handa siyang
mapunta sa limelight, at sabihin ng
bukal sa kaniyang kalooban ang mga
katagang, Ako…palagi akong
voluntir.
___________________________
Tuwing Disyembre ay
ipinagdiriwang ng buong mundo ang
Buwan ng Volunterismo. Ito ay
bilang pagkilala sa natatanging
kakayanan ng mga voluntirs bilang
instrumento ng pagbabago sa
lipunan. Ang mga voluntirs ay
maituturing na mga bayani ng
bagong panahon. Ang lahat ay
inaanyayahang makibahagi sa
naturang selebrasyon na ito.
Gayundin, ang lahat ay
inaanyayahan na makibahagi sa
proseso ng pagbabago na
nagaganap sa ating lipunan bilang
mga voluntir.
PERSISTENCE OF MEMORY
contimuation from page 4...
LEAVING LASALLE
continuation from page 5...
22
My batch has moved on to bigger,
brighter things over La Salle’s stone
brick walls and out into the real world
(in call centers and such). Our old haunts
have been repopulated with unfamiliar
faces. Heraldo Filipino is hardly the
same without old friends and batch
mates.
All the same, however, I consider myself
lucky. I consider myself lucky as all
other DLSU-D alumnus who now
works in DLSU-D should consider
themselves lucky.
I consider myself lucky because I’ve
been given a chance not to forget. I
consider myself lucky because I’ve been
given a chance to see how the tides of
time will change the face of the
University as years pass by.
But most importantly, I have been given
a chance to remind those who shall come
after me…
So that none
shall forget.
An alumnus’
responsibility to
his or her alma
mater lies in the
persistence of
memory. One
needn’t work
there to be
responsible
with the task of
k e e p i n g
cherished
traditions.
Sometimes, all it needs is a visit.
The benefit isn’t only for the institution.
Nor is it only for the students who would
carry out these traditions.
Sometimes, we ourselves are called to
remember lest we come to forget who
we were… or who we are.
It is, alas, man’s lot to forget.
Seconds fade within hours… days are
forgotten within months… entire years,
even…
But then again, is it not in our memories
that all things are made eternal?
back
to
back
ANGUE
and
CALDERON
moment. Even up to now, I can’t even
speak Tagalog that fluently.
However, these thoughts come into my
mind because I refuse to believe that a
few good for nothing people could
represent this country in general. Even
if you vote for a president that doesn’t
even know what left from right is and
needs to wear a stupid wrist band to know
so, I would still argue that one person
could not reflect the image of millions of
Filipino people who manage to celebrate
Christmas, and cherish family traditions
not found in any other country. I
guarantee you that once you leave this
country, theres no denying that you would
move mountains just to have a bite of
that native delicacy called bibingka and
puto-bumbong during Misa de Gallo.
Indeed, nothing beats the real thing.
And even
before I
decided to
leave my
alma mater
for something
I suppose
would be a
better career
for me, I
guess I would
have to say
that my heart
belongs to
this school.
And even though a lot of people claim
that La Salle caters to the rich and “canafford”,
I would still love the Institution
that allowed me to graduate having only
300 Pesos as allowance for six days a
week. And even there are still some
things (and policies) that I don’t find
justifiable (for they are still anti-student,
and perhaps even anti-faculty), still I love
this school, and I thank the few people
for giving me the opportunity to realize
that even if you don’t have the pot of
gold when you start off, you would
eventually find it along the way.
OPINION
mOONLIGHT
ETHEL PROTOMARTIR
J O U R N E Y
“Thomas Merton once said that the spiritual life is essentially to love. One
doesn’t love in order to do what is good or to help or to protect someone. If we
act that way, we are perceiving the other as a simple object, and we are
seeing ourselves as wise and generous persons. This has nothing to do with
love. To love is to be in communion with the other and to discover in that other
the spark of God.”
-- Paulo Coelho
This is a part of Paulo Coelho’s
introduction in his novel By the River
Piedra I sat down and wept. And it left
me reflecting why have I always yearned
to serve others. Why did I choose to be
a part of the LCDC family than prosper
as a human resource practitioner? Am I
doing this to appear generous or to be a
messiah in this complicated world? A lot
of answers came into my head but I
guess these are the things I am sure
of…I chose to be in La Salle because I
am searching for who I am…For my
purpose…For the dreams I have left
behind.
My four years in La Salle as a student
had been a journey with and for other
people. Becoming a part of the Council
of Student Organizations and the
Performing Arts Group, service is an
essential part of the leadership we are
practicing. Serving students and helping
them realize that they are part of what
we are doing is our goal in everything
we are pursuing. I’ve learned to love
people. To be joyful in their triumphs
and also accepting them when they are
weak. Becoming a student leader made
the roots of servanthood strong in my
heart.
And when the time to leave La Salle
came, it broke my heart so much that I
really don’t know how would I face the
real world at that time that I am not a
student anymore but a Lasallian, an
alumna who is ready to achieve my
dreams and aspirations. For two years I
worked in a Japanese firm as part of the
Human Resource Department. Though
very much different from a loving and
VERDE
supportive environment that I am enjoying
in my alma mater, I learned to love my work
and the people around me. Meeting people
who are really working hard and are very
promising but are not given a chance to
prove their worth. And also people who have
remained stagnant in their growth and chose
to stay on what is comfortable than trying to
explore new things where possibilities are
left unraveled. I was in the brink of becoming
one of these people when God sent angels
through very significant people to remind
me of dreams I should be fulfilling.
And just this June that I started as
part of the Lasallian Community
Development Center or LCDC. I was
assigned to assist in the Person with
Disability Program. Working with those with
physical and intellectual infirmities, it is quite
a difficult task. At times I find myself asking
God if I should truly be in this job. If I’m truly
worthy to serve these people. When for so
many aspects in my life that I am inferior.
How can I serve these people when I am also
wounded? When at times I also seek love
when in this line of work I should be the one
giving love? How can I possibly influence
my students to become a catalyst in our
society when at some point I am also
a burden to other people?
But I guess God taught me
to trust in His power to fulfill His
plans. That I work not on my power
but in His strength. Not on my own
knowledge and judgement but in His
wisdom. Not on what I feel and
perceive but on His perfect love and
acceptance for us. God taught me to
serve other people despite my own
imperfections. Because to serve is
not to appear as someone superior from
others but just an instrument to proclaim
God’s love. To serve is to love without
apprehensions but simply acceptance. To
love is to reach out for those who cannot
give you the same love but just a smile in
their face after each meeting you have.
For the first six months of my stay
in LCDC I realized that to serve is to love.
Not because it is merely a duty or a job I
need to fulfill but it is a dream I’ve almost
forgotten. Something that I know in my heart
is my purpose wherever and whatever I am
doing. And I am just thankful that God led
me to this path that I know I may not be the
richest in terms of material possessions but
someone who is rich with love and
inspiration from other people. It is a blessing
I know I cannot trade for other things in
life.
LCDC may not have enough space
for so many people who have a heart to
serve. But I think no matter who you are,
wherever you are, whatever you are doing
you can still serve other people. Just let
God’s love shine in your heart and that will
lead you to the path God wants you to be.
Panitikan ng Rebolusyong 1896:
Isang Pagbasang Pang-etika
NATHANIEL S. GOLLA
28
Panimula
Sadyang pinili
ang mga awtor at teksto upang magsilbing
sakop at hangganan ng maikling papel na
ito. Subalit, naniniwala ako na upang
maging maayos ang daloy ng pag-unawa
sa mga akdang pampanitikan ng
Rebolusyong 1896 saglit dapat na limutin
ang mga “ibang” nasulat tungkol sa mga
pangunahing tauhan at ang mga panitikan
nila. Marahil estetika ang isyu na nais
ipaglandakan ng mga kritikong
babanggitin subalit ito’y may tuwirang
kinalaman sa isyu ng etika. Hindi
magiging kapanipaniwala ang ating mga
pagtataya sa mga tauhan ng rebolusyon
kung mismong ang kinis ng panitikan nila
ang sentro ng batikos. Mga panitikan na
pagbabatayan ng pagbasang pang-etika
sa papel na ito. May katotohanan man o
si Glenn May. Si May ang awtor ng
“Inventing a Hero: The Posthumous
Recreation of Andres Bonifacio
(1997)”. Siya ay isang propesor sa
University of Oregon. Ilan sa kanyang
mga akda ay ang “Battle for Batangas
(1991)”, “A Past Recovered (1987)”,
at “Social Engineering in the Philippines
(1980)”. Si May ay dapat
pansamantalang tanggalin sa larawan
dahil sa kanyang isinaad sa “Inventing a
Hero…” Sinasabi niya na, “The
Bonifacio we have…is mostly an illusion,
the product of undocumented statements,
unreliable, doctored or otherwise spurious
sources, and the collective imagination
of several historians and memoirist.”
lamang. Ayon kay Almario sa akdang
“Ang Panitikan ng Rebolusyong 1896
(1997)”, na ginawa ni Le Roy ay isang
pagbubukod. Pangalawa, ayon kay Le
Roy, nagbasa ng mga libro tungkol sa
Rebolusyong Pranses si Bonifacio. Sa
pagpapatuloy ni Almario, ibig sabihin
“napulot lang ni Bonifacio ang edeyang
pinambuhay sa katipunan mula sa
Europa.” Wala raw orihinalidad si
Bonifacio. Saglit ding dapat limutin si
Agoncillo. Minsan na ring pinuri ni
Agoncillo ang
mga akda nina
Bonifacio at
Jacinto. Ang
mga akdang ito
raw ay “bukal
ng kadakilaan
ng dalawang
l i d e r
katipunero at
m a y
kakayahang
magpakilos ng
taumbayan.”
Subalit, si
Agoncillo rin ang nagturing ng “kulang
sa kinis” si Jacinto. “Mahinang klase”
bilang tula ang “Pag-ibig sa Tinubuang
Bayan” (Almario 1997).
tutunghayan. Ayon kay de Castro sa
kanyang akdang “Etika at Pilosopiya: Sa
Kontekstong Pilipino” (1995) :
Dahil sa may kinalaman ito sa
kahalagahan at pagbibigay-halaga, ito ay
ay may kinalaman sa pagkakakilala ng
mabuti at masama.
gawain. Sakop nito ang mga kapasyahan
tungkol sa tungkulin, mga karapatan, at
mga pananagutan. Kasama na rin ang
mga suliranin tungkol sa pagkakasala,
pananagutan, kaparusahan, kalayaan at
responsibilidad.
Simulan natin sa pagtingin sa mga layunin
ng Katipunan bilang isang organisadong
samahan. Ayon kay Digna Apilado sa
aklat na inedit ni Bernadita Reyes
Churchill “Determining the Truth: the
Story of Andres Bonifacio” (1997), “May
tatlong layunin ang Katipunan:1.Politikal
-Paghihiwalay ng inang bayan sa
Espanya. Kalakip nito ang pagtatag ng
isang malayang bansa. 2.Sibik/Sosyal—
Kapwa pagtutulungan at pagtatanggol sa
mga mahirap at naapi.at 3.Moral-
Responsable o angkop na pag-uugali at
pampersonal na etika. Sa kasaysayan
tanging ang layuning politikal lang ng
VERDENG

Katipunan ang nahahantad tuloy
nagkakaroon ng impresyon na ang
Katipunan ay umiikot lang sa konsepto
ng gobyerno at digmaan. Malinaw na
bahagi ng layunin ng katipunan ay ang
pampersonal na etika.
Etika at si Bonifacio
Ayon kay Dr. Jing Reyes sa kanyang
akdang “Pilosopiya ng Katipunan”
(1999), “Tinitingnan ng Katipunan ang
mga adhikaing ito bilang kaloob at utos
ng Diyos sa
m g a
mamayang
Pilipino.
Anumang
biyayang
tinanggap ng
Katipunan ay
galing sa
Diyos.” Ayon
naman kay
Apilado
(1997),
T h e s e
precepts show
that Bonifacio was very much aware of
the shortcomings of the typical Filipino
then. A society is only as good as the
individuals who comprise it, and so
Bonifacio demanded proper conduct
based on moral principles and a sense of
civic responsibility for those who seek
freedom.
Ipinapakita dito ang matiim na
pagtalima ni Bonifacio sa kagalingang
moral ng bawat indibiduwal. Ginamit pa
niyang krayterya ang moralidad sa
pagsusulong kalayaan ng inang bayan.
Maliwanag na ang mismong ang
“Sampung Utos ng Anakbayan” ay isang
tuwirang paghango sa “Sampung Utos”
na pinagkaloob kay Moses sa Bundok ng
Sinai. Nagpapatunay na ang mga
hangarin ng Katipunan at ng mga taong
nasa likod nito ay naka-angkla sa
pananampalataya sa Diyos higit sa lahat.
Tunghayan sa ibaba ang “Sampung Utos
ng mga Anakbayan”, basahin ng
partikular ang mga bilang 4, 5, 7, at 9.
SAMPUNG UTOS NG MGA
ANAKBAYAN
1. Ibigin mo ang Diyos ng buong puso.
4. Ang lahat ng mabubuti mong hangarin
ay makakamtan kung ikaw ay mahinahon,
matiyaga, makatwiran, may pag-asa sa
iyong gawain.
5. Pangalagaang katulad ng iyong
karangalan ang mga kautusan at mga
hangarin ng K.K.K.
6. Katungkulan mong iligtas ang buhay
ng nasa panganib sa pagpupumilit na
matupad ang isang marangal na hangarin,
kahit mapilitang ihandog mo ang sariling
buhay at yaman.
7. Bayaang ang ating sariling pag-uugali
ay pangingilos sa pagtupad ng ating
tungkulin ay maging uliran ng iba.
8. Bahaginan mo ng iyong yaman ang
bawat dukha at taong kulang palad sa
loob ng iyong makakaya.
9. Ang pagsusumikap at pagpipilit na
kumita ng ikakabuhay ay nagpapahayag
ng tunay na pagmamahal sa sarili, sa
asawa, anak, kapatid at kababayan.
at di dapat. Ayon kay Dr. Jing Reyes
(1999), “Ano nga ba ang
dapat?…Ipinaliliwanag na ang dapat ay
maraming pangangatwiran, at dapat
lamang na pumili ng isang
pangangatwirang angkop sa tunay na
kalagayan.” Ayon kay Almario (1997),
mapambulag at mapanlinlang ang dilim.
Higit sa kasawiang pisikal, nagdudulot ito
ng maling landas ng isip at paniwala.
Kaya’t pangunahin kay Bonifacio ang
muling pagmumulat o paggising at
Reyes (1991):
…Bonifacio continues to appeal to
his reader’s damdamin even as he
compares and contrasts, in graphic ways
life before the Spaniards came to the
Philippines and life under the repressive
regime. Because the differences are
radical, the present is the best time to
fashion a future that could return the
country to its state of peace and light.
“Dapat Mabatid ng mga Tagalog”
Itinuturo ng katuwiran ang tayo’y
tayo’y magkalakas
na maiharap ang naghaharing
kasantuan ng ating
Kaya! Oh mga kababayan!Ating
idilat ang bulag
na kaisipan at kusang igugul sa
kagalingan ang
ating lakas sa tunay at lubos na
inubuan.
Sa tulang “Tapunan ng Lingap”
malinaw na ipinapahayag sa bahagi ng
tulang ito ang konsepto ng etika. Ang
suhestiyon ni Bonifacio ay malinaw na
pagbabago ng kalagayang moral na sa
pagkakataong iyon ay nakakasira sa
dangal ng tao. Ito ay isang pag-amin na
noong mga panahong iyon maraming
mga kababayan ang lubhang nalulugmok
sa dilim ng kasalanan. Gayumpaman,
hangad ni Bonifacio sa kanyang tula na
magkaroon ng pagbabago sa mismong
indibiduwal. Ayon kay Apilado (1997),
“Bonifacio’s call for moral regeneration
is evident in his poem, “Tapunan ng
Lingap”.
lupang tinubuan”. Ang akda ni Jacinto
PANITIKAN NG REBOLUSYONG 1896 continuation...
ay maaaring sumahin sa tatlong
konsepto: Kabanalan, Kabaitan, at
Katuwiran. Ito ay bagay na lubos na
nagpapatunay na tanging pagkilala sa
mabuti at masama ang hangad na
maihantad ng Katipunan. Dahil na nga
rin sa malaki ang kumpiyansa ni
Bonifacio kay Jacinto nagbigay daan ang
Supremo dahilan upang itanghal na ang
bersyon ni Jacinto ang gagamiting
opisyal na Kartilya ng Katipunan.
Basahin ang “Kartilya ng Katipunan”:
KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN
1. Ang kabuhayang hindi ginugugol sa
isang dakila at banal na kadahilanan ay
kahoy na walang lilim, kundi man
damong makamandag.
kabaitan.
3. Ang tunay na kabanalan ay ang
pagkakawanggawa, ang pag-ibig sa
kapwa at ang isukat ang bawat kilos,
gawa’t pangungusap sa talagang
katuwiran.
4. Maitim man at maputi ang kulay ng
balat, lahat ng tao’y magkakapantay;
mangyayaring ang siya’y higtan sa
dunong, sa yaman, sa ganda, ngunit di
mahihigtan sa pagkatao.
5. Dangal at hindi ang pagnanasang
makasarili ang inuuna ng may dakilang
kalooban; pagnanasang makasarili at
panunumpa.
6. Huwag mong sayangin ang panahon,
ang yamang nawala’y mangyayaring
magbalik ngunit ang panahong nagdaan
na’y di na magbabalik.
7. Ang mga taong matalino ay may pagiingat
sa bawat sabihin, at marunong
maglihim ng dapat ipaglihim.
8. Sa daang matinik ng kabuhayan, lalaki
ang siyang patnugot ng asawa’t mga
anak; kung ang umaakay ay tungo sa
kasamaan, ang patutunguhan ng inaakay
ay kasamaan din.
9. Ang babae ay huwag mong ituturing
na isang bagay na libangan lamang kundi
isang katulong at karamay sa mga
kahirapan nitong kabuhayan; gamitin mo
nang buong pagpipitagan ang kanyang
kahinaan at alalahanin ang inang
pinagbuhata’t nag-iwi sa iyong
kasanggulan.
pagpapahalaga at etika. Ayon nga kay
Lachica (1996), “Katipunan ito ng mga
sanaysay na tumatalakay sa mga paksang
karapatan, pagpapantay-pantay,
paggawa, paniniwala, pamahalaan at
pagmamahal sa bayan”. Ipinaliwanag ni
Gonzales (1982) na, “…maraming
nasisilaw sa ningning, kaya ang mga
nakaayos-mahirap ay tinitingnan nang
mababa at nakaayos-mayaman kahit
magnanakaw ay hindi pinupuna.” Hindi
matatawaran ang pagpapahalaga ni
Jacinto sa kabutihang-asal sa kanyang
kalipunan.
Liwanag”:
Ang ningning ay nakasisilaw at
nakasisira sa paningin.
Ang liwanag ay kinakailangan ng
mata, upang mapagwari ang boong
katunayan ng mga bagay bagay
Ang bubog kung tinatamaan ng nagaapuy
na sikat ng araw ay
nagniningning; ngunit sumusugat sa
kamay ng nagaganyak na dumanpot.
Ang ningning ay maraya.
Ating hanapin ang liwanag, tayo’y
wag mabighani sa ningning. Sa
katunayan ng masamang naugalian
Etika at si Mabini
Sa “Tunay na Sampong Utos”
ipinahayag ni Mabini ang tunay na
pagkilala at pagmamahal sa Diyos. Isang
bagay na nagbibigay ng kakayahan sa tao
upang malaman ang mabuti at masama,
isang bagay na naglalarawan ng etika.
Ayon kay Cesar Adib Majul (1998):
The ‘True Decalogue’ can be briefly
summarized as follows: It exhorted the
love of God and one’s honor; the first as
the fountain of truth and justice and the
second as a force causing men to
become truthful, just and industrious. God
was to be worshiped in a manner
dependent on the conscience of the
individual, a faculty which singled out
what was good or evil”.
Basahin ang “Tunay na Sampung
Utos”:
at masipag.
Ikalawa - Sambahin mo ang Diyos sa
paraang minamabuti at minamarapat ng
iyong budhi sapagkat sa iyong budhi, na
humahatol sa masama mong gawa at
pumupuri sa mabuti ay nakakausap mo
ang iyong Diyos.
Ikatlo - Linangin mo ang mga sadyang
katangiang kaloob sa iyo ng Diyos, sa
paggawa at pag-aaral ayon sa iyong
kakayahan, na di lumalayo sa landas ng
kagalingan at katarungan, upang matamo
bayan mo’y siyang tanging paraisong
may buhay, pag-ibig, kapakanan, ligaya,
karangalan at Diyos.
VERDENG

Ikalima - Pagsumikapan mo ang
kaligayahang iyong bayang una kaysa
sarili mo, gagawin mo siyang maging
kaharian ng katwiran, ng katarungan at
ng paggawa; pagkat kung ang bayan
mo’y maligaya, ikaw sampu ng iyong
pamilya ay magiging maligaya rin.
Ikaanim - Pagsumikapan mo ang
kasarinlan ng iyong bayan: pagkat ikaw
lamang ang maaaring magkaroon ng
tunay na adhika sa kanyang ikauunlad at
ikatatayog, sapagkat ang kanyang
kasarinlan ay siyang magbibigay ng iyong
kalayaan; ang kanyang kaunlaran ay
siyang panggagalingan ng iyong
kagalingan; at ang kanyang katayuan ay
siyang pagkukunan ng sarili mong
luwalhati at pagkawalang kamatayan.
Ikawalo - Pagsumikapan mong
makapagtatag ng isang Republika at
kailanma’y hindi ng isang kaharian para
sa iyong bayan: sapagkat ang huli ay
nagpapatayog sa isa o iilang pamilya
lamang at may paghaharing manahan,
hangarin at kapakanan.
Pagsasarado/Konklusyon
Mula kay Bonifacio hanggang kay
Jacinto at Mabini, hindi maipagkakaila na
ang kanilang panitikan ay umiikot hindi
lamang sa pakikidigma kundi higit sa
lahat, sa ideolohiyang etikal. Ayon nga
kay Zialcita (1999), “Inspired by the
French Revolution of 1789, Emilio Jacinto
and Andres Bonifacio wrote of liberty
(kalayaaan) and equality
(pagkakapantay) but they spoke of these
in an ethical sense.” Malinaw na ang
Katipunan ay binuo sa mga muhon ng
paniniwalang politikal, sosyal, at moral.
Nararapat lamang bigyan ng kaukulang
pagkilala ang mga pagpupunyagi ng
Katipunan sa pagpapabuti ng kaasalan
ng sangkatauhan. Hindi lamang dapat
ipakilala ang mga katipunero bilang
mandirigma kung hindi mga alagad ng
sining at kabutihan.
alalahanin sina Glenn May, Le Roy,
Agoncillo, at iba pa. Ito ay upang muling
guluhin ang ating mga isip at maging
bahagi ng malayang diskurso. Subalit, sa
usaping etika nawa’y nalinawan tayo sa
pamamagitan ng panitikan na ang
Rebolusyong Filipino ay hindi lamang
naka-angkla sa politikal at sosyal na
pakikibaka kundi moral. Bayaan ninyong
iwanan ko ang diwa ni Apilado (1997),
“…but Bonifacio also offered redemption
through membership in the Katipunan,
where love of one’s country is the path
to personal morality and good citizenship.
Revolution was not only a political and
collective factor, but was an ethical and
personal as well.”
