offered to Caymanian students, just waiting to be taken
advantage of.
Whether it’s accounting, law or technology, its time for students to start thinking very
seriously about their future. Many scholarship deadlines are imminent so its time to
take action.
So, as a student, where should you start? First of all it’s important to decide what
interests you and where you’d like to see your career head in the future. Are you

commitment to make, so you must consider your options and choose carefully.

Carolina Watler was a successful applicant for the Young
Nation-Builders Programme 2013 scholarships. She has since
completed her studies and obtained full-time employment with
Cayman recruitment specialists SteppingStones. She shared some
insights with Cayman Scholarships Directory.
“Being a YNBP 2013 recipient made me feel very fortunate and grateful.
I wasn’t just applying for a scholarship to help me financially, but
I was setting an example to my two younger siblings. At the time I
was applying to complete my Bachelors in Business Management in
Florida, USA.
My experience as a former scholar made me realize that I had to be committed to my studies and
that I should give back to the community, either by helping a nonprofit organization, or taking
up an internship within the government sector. I did my internship within the Department of
Tourism, helping the Marketing and Public Relation unit. As a condition of the scholarship, I was
expected to maintain a certain cumulative GPA, which required that I submit a transcript each
semester.
I learned a lot of things that helped me to gain a position with SteppingStones; one of them being
diversity. You will always be working with people from different countries, with different values,
and you need to be open minded and tolerant with any situations. My scholarship enabled me to
travel giving me the invaluable opportunity to study with people from all over the world and
understand how they handle situations. Other skills I’ve learned through my studies are - independence,
communication, coping skills which are used on a daily basis, especially in a
corporate environment”.

PURGE YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA

Potential scholarship recipients - you’re under scrutiny! From the
way you present yourself on paper on your application form and your
resume, to how you dress and conduct yourself in the interview(s);
potential employers are thoroughly scrutinizing applicants and this
includes checking out your online profile and activities.
Be proactive: connect online with the company that you are applying
to for a scholarship. Keep up to date on their posts and tweets.
Be your own brand: create your own brand and market your strong
personal qualities, experience and ambitions. Companies want to
award scholarships to students who are committed to focused on their
future.
Don’t fall into the trap of revealing way too much and being too cheeky
on your Facebook account or Twitter feed, be warned, this could lose
you the opportunity of a lifetime.
Here are some tips:-
Be yourself: fully utilize the information that you are sharing online.
Don’t appear as if you are hiding some bad habits.
Be aware of what you post: delete all of your goofy pictures and silly
comments. Be mature about the content. Include photos of awards received,
charity or community events that you’ve participated in; share
book reviews, intellectual quotes and reveal places you’ve travelled to.
Be smart with personal email addresses: if you are stating your personal
email address on an application form, ensure its non offensive and
preferably professional.
Be careful who you friend and follow: potential employers are going
to consider who you are connected to. Diligently and routinely delete
and tidy up your contacts list.
Take social media very seriously, sharpen your presence on line. The
time that you invest in your personal online marketing could pay off
handsomely with a company investing in you and your future.

LEGAL MINDS

During the summer months of 2014 four Caymanians, pursuing a
career in law or expressing a keen interest in entering the legal arena,
were the beneficiaries of Conyers Dill & Pearman’s Summer Internship
Programme.
Engaging
Conyers’ Summer Internship Programme aims to provide the student
with an opportunity to learn about the different areas of law practiced
by Conyers in the Cayman Islands and the work undertaken by the
attorneys at Conyers on a daily basis.
“With the support of our attorneys, the Firm’s Summer Internship
Programme is designed to provide our interns with general insight into
law and working knowledge of the various areas practiced by Conyers
in the Cayman Islands”, said Gene DaCosta, Director and Shareholder.
Each student was rotated through four modules in the practice areas of
Corporate & Commercial, Company Incorporation and Management,
Litigation and Investment Funds while under the mentorship and
guidance of Senior Associates. Working closely with the Supervising
Senior Associate and Partners in the respective practice area, interns
received in depth, hands on training in the applicable areas of the
law. The interns worked on a wide variety of projects and
assignments, spending significant time on research activities”.
When asked what aspect of the Programme they enjoyed best, one
student had this to say: “Conyers Dill & Pearman provided an
interactive and supportive internship programme that I am so
grateful to have been a part of. My time spent at Conyers has
provided me a strong foundation for a future career in law. The
opportunitiesprovided have been endless, and I consider this
internship invaluable.”
Keisha Syms, Human Resources Manager said: “We are confident
that our interns received great insight into how a law firm operates
on a day-to-day basis and left our Programme with a much better
understanding of the actual practice of law including an appreciation
of the skills that are required in order for them to become effective
lawyers”.
Legal Secretary Scholarship
Conyers Dill & Pearman is also proud to offer a scholarship to the
University College of the Cayman Islands for Caymanians interested
in starting or completing courses that will result in the individual
obtaining a Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEX)

Brittany Bodden, who attended the University
College of the Cayman Islands, interned with
our Fund of Funds Department. Brittany is
now a scholarship recipient attending Florida
Atlantic University pursuing her Bachelors
of Science Degree in Forensic Accounting.
Brittany stated, “I always learn something new
whenever I work at UBS. I continuously utilize
my communication and organization skills,
and I get to build on prior knowledge that I
acquired from my last internship. Additionally,
the people at UBS are delightful and encouraging.
The teams that I work with are always
happy to see me, and asking when I can come
back. The fact that they are willingly take
the time out to pass their knowledge onto me
shows that they care about their interns.

RESUME PREPARATION TIPS
Your resume is one of the most important documents you will ever
write. It’s a selling document and marketing tool with one purpose
– to win an interview.
Consider the following points
Structure:
- Ideally, keep to 2 pages maximum.
- Ensure contact details are up to date.
- Portray yourself as positive as possible, sell your skills.
- Begin with a statement about your career objectives.
- Put your employment and education in reverse chronological
order with the most recent first.
- Focus on your most recent positions, providing the most
information about them.
- Adapt it according to the position that you are applying for. Focus
on the employer’s needs, show them why you are the person to hire
for this position.
-Name your employment history section ’Professional Experience’.
- If you have not yet completed your degree, put the expected date
of completion in parentheses: B. Comm Accounting (expected
2016). This shows the employer that you are on track and have a
plan to complete your education.
Presentation and formatting:
- Your resume should look professional, simple, and clean.
- Avoid coloured paper, fancy fonts and photographs.
- Use a sensible, professional font that it is consistent throughout.
- Use bullet points, be concise.
- Double check your resume for typos and grammatical errors.
- Ahead of reference details, list hobbies and interests.
- You may put “References available upon request” at the end but
it’s not essential. If you are invited for an interview, be prepared
and bring in a separate sheet of at least 3 references and/or their
details.

Highlight your work ethic and
past accomplishments representative
of your commitment
to your future education and

without the scholarship you are
unable to attend college.

Be sure you come up with 2-3
strengths and back them up with
concrete examples.
What are your weaknesses?
Share a weakness that you have
converted into a strength by
facing your fear, reading, taking a
course. Show initiative.
How do you plan to allocate the
scholarship money?
Create a budget that features your
estimated expenses for gaining
a degree, include all resources.
Prove that you are aiming to keep
your student debt to a minimum.

United World Colleges Caymanian Scholar
Scholarship Provider: UWC Cayman Islands
Value of Scholarship: UWC scholars study for the pre-university
International Baccalaureate Diploma at one of 15 prestigious colleges
around the world. Caymanian students aged 15 or 16 can apply
through the Cayman Islands National Committee. The number of
selected students, college placements and scholarship awards vary
each year, but funding may be awarded up to full coverage of tuition,
accommodation, travel and other costs. Selection is carried out based
entirely on merit and UWC is committed to meeting the full financial

on a yearly basis, we provide
the Butterfield Undergraduate
Scholarship to assist students
who are pursuing an undergraduate
degree at overseas
colleges and universities.
Reviewing the many applications
during the shortlist
process can be time-consuming
and it is important that applicants
take the time to review
the instructions and terms
and conditions for each scholarship
that they apply for.
See below for some important
tips to note when applying for
the Butterfield Undergraduate
Scholarship:
- Applicants must be Caymanian
and between the ages of 17
to 25.
- Applicants must complete
the Butterfield Undergraduate
Scholarship Application in
full.
- A letter from a parent/
guardian undertaking to
accept responsibility for additional
funds over and above
the Scholarship allowance
necessary to maintain the
scholar at an educational institution
abroad, or a letter from
a Bank stating that additional
funds are available is required.
- Three references are required:
one from the School Principal
and two character references.
- Academic certificates, together
with full details of grades attained
in the various subjects. Official
certification of grades is necessary
if these do not appear on
actual certificates.
- Allow yourself sufficient time
to collect the various documents
required. Failure to provide the
required documents might render
you ineligible.
- When presenting your information,
be clear and concise. How
clearly you communicate is as
important as what you communicate.
- Separate yourself from the other
candidates. Show passion and
genuine interest in your writing.
- Pay special attention to the
presentation and proof-reading
of your application. Be aware of
sentence structure, spelling and
grammar.
- Responsibility for the submission
of the required documents,
on or before the stated deadline,
rests entirely with each applicant.
Butterfield will not follow up with
applicants to obtain missing
documentation.
