• A major issue of concern for

international shipping

– Searfarers’ lives are at risk

– Ships and Cargoes are at risk

– Shipping and Trade affected

– Increased costs eg. insurance & secure

installations etc.

– Ransom payments

– JWC listed Malacca Strait as War Risk area

in 2005

– Multilateral and bilateral agreements on

cooperative efforts to suppress piracy

• Urge members to adopt best

practices and anti piracy measures

• Encourage members to report to

ReCAAP national focal points and

cooperate in any investigation

• Actively engage ReCAAP, IFC and

MPA on piracy issues

ReCAAP – Points to note

• Constantly remind littoral states of SOMS

to provide naval and air surveillance

• Exert greater political weight on coastal

states to take stronger actions on the

pirates

• Work closely with IFC to establish a real

time alert system

• Urge maritime & port authorities to

administer and enforce ISPS Code rigidly
