Mr. Steven Forman, a member of Broken Sound Club, has just penned his first
novel which is a Winter 2009 Forge Select Tilte Published by Forge Books. Titled
Boca Knights,
It features Eddie Perlmutter, a former Boston
cop who, at sixty years of age and with arthritic
knees, decides to retire to Boca Raton. He soon
discovers the “darker” side of Boca and singlehandedly
captures a counterfeiting ring.
He becomes a Senior Citizen superman
and an overnight sensation in the local
press and then goes after a group of neo-
Nazis. Some of the advance comments
have stated “Boca Knights goes down
faster than a frosty double mojito on a
hot tropical night” from Lincoln Child, author
of Deep Storm. Steve Abrams,
Boca’s former Mayor, says that it is “an
inspiring story and wonderful cast of characters
– but the star of the book, I venture
to say, is my beloved Boca Raton!”
Mr. Forman was born and raised in the Boston
area. After graduating the Univ. of Massachusetts, Amherst, he founded a oneman
business. He currently divides his time between the Boston area and Boca
Raton and Boca Knights is his first novel which will be available this winter. He is
currently working on the sequel Boca Mournings.
We at Broken Sound wish Mr. Forman much success in his new endeavor.
Presidents Message
Living Better, Longer
Dear Member,
For two years we have hosted the legends of the PGA Champions Tour in the Allianz
Championship at The Old Course.
I hope you have
enjoyed, as I have,
this community
event that brings
millions of revenue
dollars to the City
of Boca Raton,
tremendous local
and national
television exposure to Broken Sound, as
well as supporting the Boca Raton
Community Hospital. This year the
Allianz Championship will be held on
February 9 th -15 th , 2009.
I would like to remind you that we have
a special opportunity to play golf with
these legends of the game. The Allianz
Championship hosts two pro-ams during
the week prior to the Championship
rounds. On Wednesday or Thursday, you
can tee it up in a foursome with one of
these Champions Tour Greats. You can
buy spots individually or as a group. The
gift package each individual receives is
second to none with items such as: a
$500 gift certificate to be used at the
Titleist/Cobra on course store, one
dozen PRO-V1 golf balls, designer golf
shirt, gold money clip and an invitation
for you and a guest to mingle with the
Pros at the Tuesday night VIP Draw
Party held at the Boca Raton Resort
& Club.
I have been able to secure a 10%
discount for the Allianz Championship
Pro-ams for all Broken Sound
members. The Broken Sound member
cost for an individual spot is $2,700
and a foursome is $10,800. If you
are part of a business, you can carry
this savings to them as well.
Furthermore, you can also deduct from
your income taxes as a charitable
contribution the sum of $1,800. As a
non-profit 501c3 organization, the
Allianz Championship will present you
with a letter and certificate of
exemption following the tournament,
which you can present at tax time.
I hope you will take advantage of this
offer for the once in a lifetime
opportunity to play with the Champions
Tour Pros.
Not only mental, but physical benefits come
with the act of giving back.
A Volunteer Fair Is Coming to Broken Sound
People who give time to a volunteer activity
tend to be healthier and happier. This is even
more true if it helps others.
On Friday, November 7, from 2:30pm to
4:30pm in the 19th Hole, the community
outreach chair, of the Social Committee, has
arranged for representatives of several local
organizations to be at Broken Sound to help
you learn about their programs and of what
might be of interest to you.
You have probably been thinking about this
for a long time, and did not know where or
how to begin - no more excuses -now we are
bringing it all to you.
There is a place for you. You name it... animals,
children, adults seniors, babies, plants - in a
museum, in a school, indoors, outdoors.
From The Finance Committee
Management has been working on the budget since April and each July the Board of
Governors meets to adopt the budget for the fiscal year beginning in October.
The budget adopted amounted to
$14,667,000 which represents the
excess of the projected expenses to be
incurred over the revenues to be received.
This represents a 3.5% increase
in the total budget versus last year’s budget.
As previously notified this produced
a dues increase of $296 per Family
membership and $261 for a Single
membership. In addition the Service
Charge which primarily helps to support
Food and Beverage services has been
increased by $10 per month or $110
per family per month and $80 per individual
per month.
As you know by your own personal
experiences prices for all products
purchased have escalated dramatically
this year. The Club purchases many
products that also had substantial price
increases such as food, energy, plastics,
fuel, fertilizer and pesticides. In order to
minimize the impact of these price
increases Management carefully examined
all its operations to reduce the impact
of these price increases and to
bring this budget in at a very reasonable
increase while continuing to provide all
the services and amenities that you are
used to receiving. The complete budget
is available for your review in the Finance
Department.
At June 30 our finances are close to
budget. Barring any extraordinary events
we should end the year at September
30, 2008 at or slightly ahead of budget.
We hope you have enjoyed your summer
and we will keep you informed of our
financial progress on the Finance
Committee web site.
We hope you all enjoy the new seashore
paspalum tees this year as every tee top now
has the new turf. Although they require a little
more cultivation work, they stay green and
striped all year long. We will occasionally
verticut the tee tops to keep them from getting
too lush and developing disease with only a
slight inconvenience now and then.
The new landscaping by the main driving range
will be completed by the time this newsletter
goes to print. So far we have heard a great deal
of support for the entire design concept in
beautifying the practice area at the Club Course.
Club Course News
Before you purchase that driver your friend is hitting so well; those irons you saw on
T.V. last week; the fairway wood that promises a perfect shot every time, or that
hybrid you think you need but are unsure of, you should ask yourself one question,
Page.
6
“How will I know if this
is the right club for
me?”
When was the last time
you played golf with
someone who had the
exact same swing as
you? Your answer is the same as everyone
else reading this…”Never!” Each one of
us has our own unique swing.
Golf clubs do not break in. If they don’t fit
you correctly, you break in. That is, you
adapt your swing to the deficiencies in the
club. You change your swing to fit the
club when the club should be made to fit
your swing. How do you make a club fit
your swing? Get your clubs custom fit to
your swing. In a game where you need
maximum distance as well as distance
control, guessing isn’t good enough.
Nike Golf has revolutionized custom club
fitting. Nike has taken tour level fitting and
made it available to the everyday golfer
with its 360 IFS (Intelligent Fitting System)
software and fitting cart. The Broken
Sound Club Course is the only course in
South Eastern Florida to have Nike’s 360
fitting system. The Nike 360 fitting
system uses state of the art IFS software
Golf Maintenance, Joe Hubbard, CGCS
coupled with a launch monitor to build
you the perfect set.
Who doesn’t want to hit their driver
further? Ever asked yourself which club
you should use, the fairway wood or the
hybrid? Not only will it build the driver
that will give you optimum launch
conditions which in turn will result in
added yardage and accuracy; it will tell
you exactly which fairway woods, hybrids
and irons you need to ensure you have
a club for every distance (sorry, 300
yards excluded). The best part, it only
takes about an hour to be fit for an entire
set, driver through wedge.
Technology has provided us with many
advances in golf equipment. Today’s
equipment is far more forgiving than
equipment made 20 years ago, but the
average player is not playing better. The
major reason for this is the average
player is playing with equipment that is
not fitted correctly to their needs.
Custom fit golf clubs will give you the
confidence and enjoyment you have been
looking for. I invite you to visit the Golf
Shop to learn more about this exciting
opportunity.
Best in Golf,
Scott Feller, PGA Director of Golf
My superintendents, crew and I would like to welcome back all those who come down
in the early Fall to enjoy the cooling high 80 degree weather in South Florida.
We anticipate a
busy and successful
season of golfing and
presenting wonderful
golf courses for your
playing pleasure.
As for some “house
keeping” notes: Ropes will start to go
back up around both courses, along with
traffic control signs – this is really the
only way to control traffic for the amount
of play we have. The ninety (90) degree
rule will be in effect the entire year. Make
your runs parallel in the rough to your
ball and then make a straight line to it in
the fairway. We would appreciate when
you reach the approach ropes/balls or
green & white stakes that you never drive
across them as a shortcut but exit to
the cart path and park your carts in the
designated areas (concrete path or
coquina path, respectively).
For the handicap players, we ask you
not to cut across any ropes or signs
around the greens. To get to the
designated parking markers around the
greens, please use the cart path to go
past the green and then up to the
markers. This will preserve the quality
of the turf and aesthetics around the
greens. All par 3s on both courses are
limited to the cart paths only with the
exception of #12 at the Old Course for
handicap players only.
As I write this article we are still in a
Phase II drought restriction but talk is
underway by the South Florida Water
Management District to ease
regulations of water on golf courses, of
which, we are heavily regulated and
monitored weekly with monthly caps.
The Old Course has continued to gain in
Food For Thought
It’s all in the details!
When planning a party of any size, people generally tend to think that the ‘extras’ are
the things that make the price go up. That is absolutely TRUE! But details are what
make a party memorable. Cost effective methods are always at our fingertips
that allow us to embellish what we already
have nailed down. Keep in mind that the
first news of a party is what creates hype,
and therefore your invitation should
give a small hint of things to come. A
way to save is ordering your invitations
online from websites such as
www.paperdirect.com where you can find
great deals as well as a downloadable
template that will make the printing quite
easy. Adding a printed personalized
mailing label (easily printable at home in
Microsoft Word with labels purchased at
any office supply store) and / or
personalized stamps (available at
usps.com) will not go unnoticed either.
Same is applicable for place cards,
menus, programs, etc.
Details are especially important when it
comes to the look of the venue. As well
as specialty linens, rental chargers are
often crucial to a sharp, fresh look
depending on the location; in facilities such
as Broken Sound there is very little that
needs to be done due to exquisitely
decorated rooms. A simple touch such
For those of you who are slowly returning to sunny Florida, we would
like to wish you a warm welcome back to Broken Sound Club. Wherever
your destination, we hope you enjoyed your summer months as much
as we did.
As for us, our Tuesday
evening Prix Fixe menu,
Sunday evening buffets
dinners continue their popularity with our
year round members. It’s been a summer
like no other before; we kept busy with
events such as the highly acclaimed Wine
Tastings.
Cooking Classes with Executive Chef Joe
Longo and Pastry Chef Kate Austin, were
again, a big hit with our members. We
are glad that we can offer this exciting
way to take home your favorite recipes
designed by our imaginative Chefs. This
year as an added bonus, Joe Longo’s
Cooking Classes are now available on DVD.
If you were away or would like a copy of
the recipe booklet and DVD, they are on
sale for $15.00 each so please feel free
to contact our office for your copy to take
home. Call our Administrative Assistant,
During the summer we have been busy
preparing for the upcoming season from
riveting member events to lavish private
parties and we are confident you will be
pleased with the outcome. With so many
details that need attention, we are always
thrilled when we please our members.
Take a moment to speak with your friends
and neighbors. Several hosted their
landmark’ birthday celebrations and
anniversary parties this summer at the
club. Needless to say – they were very
satisfied. We truly appreciate your trust
and confidence in the Catering
Department and look forward to another
exciting season
More and more of our members start
planning memorable events for and with
their loved ones. Therefore as of this issue
we are adding a brief article that will
concentrate on tips for party planning.
Please see Lorant G. Botha’s article
below.
Please keep your eyes open for the new
Dining Schedule due to be released early
October. Once it is complete, it will be
emailed to all the members, posted on
the Broken Sound website and distributed
to all of the dining locations and
receptionists. Old Course members
please note that revisions were made to
the Old Course dress code. Please take
a moment to review the changes as our
dining room managers have been
instructed to thoroughly enforce the
dress code.
Zumba at Broken Sound
Wednesday, 6:00 p.m.
Instructor- Jessie
Celebrity fitness trainer, “Beto” Perez, stumbled upon the concept of
Latin inspired fitness in his native country of Colombia ( South
America ) in the mid 1990’s. One day, he walked into
his class and realized that he had forgotten his
aerobics music, and his only option was to grab
whatever tapes he had in his car. Beto’s tapes were
comprised of the songs that he loved, the traditional
Latin salsa and merengue music with which he had
been raised. But it was a challenge to improvise a
whole class on the spot using non-traditional aerobics
music. Beto rose to the challenge and from this
last-minute improvisation was born a
revolutionary fitness program Zumba ® Fitness!
Members Highlights
Dr Ehrlich an avid jogger of 25 years, on two separate occasions suffered from
herniated disks. When Dr Ehrlich retired, he found himself physically restricted and
semi-housebound due to his injuries that made it difficult for him to walk.
Although Dr. Ehrlich coped with his pain,
his biggest complaint with his condition
was the numbness in his ankles and the
pain in his back. After receiving months
of physical therapy, he felt that he had
not fully reached the quality of life he
anticipated and thought surgery was his
only option.
While on the golf course, a member
recommended having a massage with
“Ronald.” Dr Ehrlich had never received
a massage before and was a “hostile
witness.” “I didn’t believe there was
anything Ronald could do for me.”
Reluctantly, Dr Ehrlich received his first
massage which was a little
uncomfortable, but later that same
afternoon Dr Ehrlich felt much more
limber. The next week after Dr Ehrlich’s
second massage with Ronald, the
numbness in his ankles had gone! Now
when Dr Ehrlich receives his massages,
he is pain free! Dr Ehrlich continued
seeing Ronald every week for a year and
still does “quarterly maintenance check.”
“He gave me back my life”. Before seeing
Ronald on a regular basis, Dr Ehrlich
could only manage 4 minutes on the
treadmill. Now Dr Ehrlich visits the
fitness center regularly and can jog for
30 minutes. “After Ronald gave me back
my life, I recommended him to others
on a daily basis.” Dr Ehrlich currently
enjoys coaching both his grandsons’
soccer teams, especially considering that
he can now jog along with his grandsons
and their teams.
New Aerobics Classes
Functional Movement :
Tuesday, 5:00 p.m.
Instructor- Foti
Functional fitness teaches correct body
movement patterns. These movement patterns
will help your muscle groups function correctly,
avoiding wear and tear on your joints due to
improper muscle balance. Functionally fit
individuals are strong, balanced, coordinated
and flexible. This class will help you feel better
overall as you learn to move your body in the
way it was truly designed to function.
Golf Conditioning : Tuesday, 4:00 p.m.
Instructor- Foti
This class offers a series of movements that will
improve both your golf game and your general
strength and conditioning. The focus of the
class will be to increase strength, stability and
range of motion in those areas of the body that
typically inhibit the golf swing. This program
is developed in conjunction with the Titleist
Golf Perfomance Institute.
Mrs. Donath has been living in Broken Sound for 15 years. Over the past 20 years
she has kept a very active lifestyle, taking Jazzercise/aerobics classes every day.
Unfortunately, due to three arthroscopic knee surgeries, she was unable to continue
with her classes. After her last surgery
in 2001, she started exercising once
again by power walking and using the
ellipticals and treadmills. Three years
ago, she began personal training with
Jerry Parrish in order to build up her
strength and her flexibility. She also was
diagnosed with osteoporosis, which Mrs.
Donath was concerned about, so she
wanted to emphasize building up her bone
density. She was also concerned about
starting any training program since she
has stenosis of her lumbar spine and
arthritis in her neck. Mrs. Donath is
happy to report that since she has been
training with Jerry, her strength and
flexibility have improved immensely.
During her recent Doctor’s visit, her test
results showed that her bone density has
increased because of her weight training.
As a result of her exercise regimen with
Jerry she has not needed to take
medication for her osteoporosis for over
a year. She feels that Jerry has helped
reshape her body, increase her
metabolism and improve her flexibility.
She no longer needs to take an epidural
for her stenosis and feels stronger and
healthier than ever. Jerry consistently
watches her form to make sure that she
doesn’t break down in her mechanics.
He has nicknamed her “Tiger”, as a
reference to her strength and tenacity
during her training. When asked for final
comments, Mrs. Donath stated, “I don’t
ever intend to stop training. My goal is
to be the best that I can be!”
To book your personal training session,
BOCA FRIENDS FOR
CANCER RESEARCH
Comprehensive Cancer Center
As summer draws to a close, we are about to start another season of fundraising for
money so needed for cancer research. We have been busy all summer planning great
activities for you to enjoy and for us to reach our goal in finding a cure.
We open our season with our paid up membership tea on Monday, November 10th at
the beautiful home of Debby Singerman.
Our Annual Walkathon will take place on Sunday, December 14. Round up the children,
gather family and friends and let’s walk together for the cure. We start at 8:30AM with
warm up exercises led by our own Al Salkeld. We then walk around the community and
return to the clubhouse for a delectable brunch, and a silent auction. Each year more
and more people join the fun, and we hope you will be one of them.
Save Thursday, January 29, 2008 for our winter card party. We will have several new
and interesting vendors, along with raffle prizes.
Boca Friends is one of 47 units in South Florida working to raise funds for cancer
research. Last year our efforts alone, resulted in giving to the Pap Corp. $120,000
toward this goal. At our annual luncheon in May, the Pap Corp. gave to Miami Sylvester
Comprehensive Cancer Center a check for $4.15 million. We could not have accomplished
this without your support.
Many people don’t know that Boca Friends does much more than fundraising. We have
a referral service that helps people in the community connect with specialists at Sylvester
should the need arise. A call to Barbara Pessel at 736-7772, Arnie Spevak at 241-
6417, Robin Schumer at 995-2408 or Roberta Oberman at 740-3003 will get you
the prompt help that you need.
Cancer does not discriminate. There isn’t a family that has not been touched. Let’s work
together to eliminate this dread disease.
