PREVIEW
HAVE
CHAMPIONSHIP
TITLES
IN THEIR SIGHTS
Nine boats will line up for this weekend’s Abu
Dhabi Grand Prix and a repeat of last year’s race
win-double by World Champions Arif Al Zafeen
and Nadir Bin Hendi will seal the Emirati duo their third
World title with two races to spare.
The Fazza pairing, with one trophy already under their
belts after clinching the 2010 European Championship
at the Italian Grand Prix in Stresa in October, has taken
six wins from a possible eight this season and head
into the penultimate Grand Prix of the season carrying
a 33-point advantage over their teammates, Abdullah
Al Mehairbi and Talib Al Sayed in Spirit of Dubai, and
barring any kind of technical meltdown are on course to
give Victory Team a tenth World crown.
The Spirit of Dubai crew know that the title may
be beyond their reach but can cover off the 2010
Champions elect from any unlikely - but still
mathematically possible title challenge from either
Negotiator or GSG Ceramic Design - and will be looking
to defend their second place and add to their tally of
four podium finishes since teaming-up in Sweden.
Three teams field new pairings this weekend; Italian
outfit GiorgiOffshore bring in Italian motor racing driver
Sandro Sardelli - who has enjoyed a successful career
on four wheels spanning over fifteen years - to take
the driver’s seat in the Lamborghini-SCAM powered
GiorgiOffshore to make his Class 1 debut alongside
experienced thottleman Nicola Giorgi.
Giorgi will make his 73rd Grand Prix start in Abu Dhabi
and will be looking to try to repeat his podium success
in the Edox Pole Position last year, and to consolidate on
this season performances, which saw him start strongly
to finish fifth and fourth in Brazil, grab a podium in race
1 in Sweden and finish sixth in race 2 in the Italian
Grand Prix in Stresa.
UK based Chris Parsonage Racing field an all-Italian
driver line up, with Giovanni Carpitella - who raced
with team owner Parsonage last time out in the Italian
Grand Prix - joined in the Lamborghini V12-powered
Negotiator by Class 1 debutant, Luca Formilli Fendi, who
has competed in XCAT and Class 3 and for the last three
years in P1, lifting the European Championship in 2008.
AL MARRI
TO MAKE 70th
GRAND PRIX
START IN
ABU DHABI
Carpitella, who made his Class 1 debut in 2002, will not be fazed by a
seventh driver change in 30 race starts. In 2009 he guided Al Hameli
to a podium on his Class 1 race debut in Abu Dhabi and this season
powered two of his drivers to podium successes and race wins, Manuzzi
in Norway and Al Tayer in Sweden, on his way to finishing second overall
in this season’s European Championship.
Looking to build on an already impressive debut season in Class 1 with
four podium finishes - and currently lying in fourth place in the overall
points table - GSG Ceramic Design’s Guido Cappellini reforms his
partnership with fellow-Italian Giampaolo Montavoci.
The pair raced together at the season-opener in Brazil, finishing fourth
and third, with Montavoci, who last year achieved his best-ever finish in
the overall World Championship standings in his twelve years of racing,
finishing fourth, looking to continue his extraordinary run of consecutive
points-finishes, which began back in Arendal in 2007, and now extends
to 22 Grands Prix and 26 races.
“
Welmax’s all-Norwegian
partnership of Kolbjorn Selmer
and Jorn Tandberg has, on
occasion this season, looked
the crew most likely to upset
Fazza’s dominance.
”
PREVIEW
Team Abu Dhabi will
line up for the first
time in their home
Grand Prix
NOVEMBER / page 04

Denied their first race win together in race 1 in Italy after
being handed a post-race penalty-lap, Welmax’s all-
Norwegian partnership of Kolbjorn Selmer and Jorn Tandberg
has, on occasion this season, looked the crew most likely to
upset Fazza’s dominance and although out of the running in
the race for the World title, a run of three consecutive wins
in qualifying puts them at the top of the Edox Pole Position
Championship standings, ten points clear of their arch rivals.
A fourth win this weekend would all but secure the title
barring any major mishaps.
Relekta’s Norwegian-Brazilian pairing who came together
at the Norwegian Grand will be aiming to up the pace this
weekend and to build on their fifth place finish last time out,
as more time on the water gives Christian Zaborowski and
Paul Gaiser the opportunity to fine tune and develop their
partnership.
Team Abu Dhabi will line up for the first time in their home
Grand Prix and in front of a partisan crowd, double race
winner, Rashed Al Tayer, and American John Tomlinson
will be confident that they have the credentials to target
a podium finish after narrowly missing out on their debut
outing together in Italy.
After taking podiums in Brazil and Norway, then stepping
back from race duties in Sweden, Victory Team’s double
World Champion Mohammed Al Marri returns to the cockpit
to make his 70th Grand Prix appearance in the team’s third
boat, teaming up with Italian Giorgio Manuzzi, also returning
to racing after double podium success in Norway.
as more time on the water gives Christian
Zaborowski and Paul Gaiser the opportunity
to fine tune and develop their partnership
REVIEW
EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS 2010
Arif Al Zafeen and Nadir Bin Hendi continued their seemingly
unstoppable title march after being crowned the 2010 UIM Class 1
European Champions at the Italian Grand Prix in Stresa.
Four wins from six races was enough to give the Emirati duo their first
shared European title and a seventh for Victory Team.
They completed the win-doubles
in Brazil and Norway, were
sidelined in race 1 in Sweden after a spectacular crash involving
Relekta and denied the win in race 2 after being handed a post race
penalty, sealing the title with maximum points in Italy.
Al Zafeen and Bin Hendi first paired in Class 1 in 2008, winning in
Qatar, and have since gone on to win 14 of their 18 races together.
Each has won 18 races.
Wrapped around you five tons of state-ofthe-art
carbon Kevlar composite powerboat.
Behind you, twin 900hp engines capable of
speeds in excess of 160mph/250kmh. In front of
you unpredictable seas, either side, boats just
inches apart. The flag drops; full throttle
– it’s a breathtaking charge to the first turn
buoy’…welcome to the unique and exhilarating
world of Class 1…an unrivalled cocktail of
world-class racing and entertainment.
CLASS 1
EXHILARATING AND
BREATHTAKING
The UIM Class 1 World Powerboat
Championship is an exhilarating and
breathtaking spectacle. From the 34-
foot, 21hp wooden mono-hulls of the 1950s
that averaged speeds of 20mph, the modernday
raceboat is a 42ft, twin-engined, 900hp
composite catamaran capable of speeds
exceeding 160mph/250kmh.
It brings together the latest in million-dollar,
state-of-the-art technology, an array of
spectacular venues from South America to the
steel-blue waters of Scandinavia, the lakes and
sun-drenched coasts of southern Europe and
the golden sands of the Arabian Gulf, and an
international group of teams and racers who
remain a breed apart in professional sport.
A Grand Prix weekend is a three-day
extravaganza where top flight international
motorsport, spectacular venues and world-class
entertainment come together to create a unique
experience.
The Boats
Weighing in at around 5 tonnes, each boat in the Class 1
fleet is approximately 12-14m in length, 3.5m wide, and
constructed using composite materials.
Over the years, safety has become a key concern and today’s
Class 1 boats are the safest they have ever been. The quest
for speed has produced boats, engines and transmission
systems which are inevitably more sophisticated, and the use
of Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) with advanced composites
using kevlar and carbon fibre has made them safer.
The Crews
Each boat has a two-man crew; the driver who
navigates and steers the boat and a throttleman
who dictates the speed and attitude, controlling
the throttles and the trim. It is a combination that
requires total trust – imagine driving a car and the
person beside you has control of the accelerator
– and a close working relationship. People often
believe that the crew, simply jump into the cockpit,
Both pilots work closely with their pit crews to
determine the race set-up: the type of propeller
required for the conditions, gear ratio settings’, the
amount of fuel needed and race tactics. Propeller
choice is critical and can win or lose not only a race,
but also a Championship.
Propeller design has seen the early three-bladed
Manufacturers Maritimo, MTI, Tencara and Victory make
up the fleet. All boats run petrol engines, either SKEMA or
SCAM 8.2litre V12s, with several teams now opting to run
the Mercury V8, or Sterling supercharged 9 litre V8, with the
Victory Team running the Victory V12.
Inside the cockpit, satellite GPS systems, trim indicators,
engine data dashboards and instrument panels and warning
lights keep the crew aware of the boat’s progress during a
race.
The cockpit is reinforced to withstand enormous impacts that
may occur if a boat crashes at speeds in excess of 150mph,
with an escape hatch in the hull as an added safety feature
in the event of an accident.
and it’s the guys who drive quickest that can win.
A simple enough theory, but one that doesn’t take
into account, the skills and professionalism of
pilots who regularly hurtle across the waves at over
160mph/250kmh.
bronze wheels superseded by stainless steel props
with five or six blades for maximum efficiency and
a top-flight team will carry multiple pairs of props
of differing pitches and diameters to accommodate
differing sea conditions, fuel loads and handling
characteristics.
NOVEMBER / page 21

CLASS 1
The Championship
A maximum of sixteen races at eight venues make up the
UIM Class 1 World Powerboat Championship, with races run
over approximately 55 or 75Nm of multiple laps of approx
5Nm (including one or two mandatory long laps).
The World Championship is awarded to the team with the
most accumulated points throughout the season. A winning
crew collects 20 points, the runners-up 15, with the thirdplaced
team awarded 12 points.
Other positions are awarded points on a sliding scale (9, 7,
5, 4, 3, 2, 1) to the tenth-placed finisher. Bonus points are
also awarded (one point per engine per race) to teams for
running engines for two consecutive races.
to the wet pits to make adjustments to set-up, but
limited to a total of 10 minutes under the crane.
On day three, a final practice session in the morning
is followed in the afternoon by Race 2. Each race
is started by two Nor-Tech 3600 supercat official
pace boats, running at a controlled speed, which
lead the boats from the wet pits and call them into
a line-abreast under a yellow flag or amber flashing
light, with the finishing order of the Edox Pole Position
dictating the line-up of the boats for Race 1 and the
finishing order of Race 1, the start order for Race
2. When all the boats are considered by the official
starter to be in line, a green flag will be raised.
Each race consists of approximately 11-15 laps and
is 55-75Nm in length, including one or two mandatory
long laps.
Although Class 1 has certainly changed and developed
over the years, one thing has remained constant and
no amount of techno-wizardry will ever change it.
The sea is the sea. It remains unpredictable and, on
occasion, at its inhospitable best – and for all the
progress made in the sport, Class 1 still enjoys, as its
basic element, the battle of man and machine against
the sea.
A Grand Prix weekend is run over three days, with
registration, technical scrutineering and the first practice
session and driver briefings taking place on day one.
On day two, a practice session is run in the morning,
followed immediately by the Edox Pole Position (qualifying),
also counting as a separate Championship, and Race 1 in
the afternoon.
The Edox Pole Position, like the practice sessions, is run
over the Grand Prix course, giving the crews a further
opportunity to familiarise themselves with circuits and
conditions, and to decide on set-up. It acts as the qualifier
for the line-up for Race 1, with the Pole-sitter (fastest
time) lining-up closest to the official start boat. The Edox
Pole Position lasts for 45 minutes, with teams having to
complete a minimum of one timed lap and allowed to return
The World
Championship is
awarded to the
team with the most
accumulated points
throughout the
CLASS 1
Class 1 is the ‘spiritual heir’ to offshore
powerboat racing of the 1980s, when
lightning-fast catamarans started to do battle
on open seas around the world.
Today, Class 1 sets out to be the ultimate in
top-flight powerboat racing, with spectacular
events on coastal racecourses, and easily
seen by ever increasing crowds of spectators.
Class 1 is also the point of reference for the
world of powerboat racing in terms of its
levels of technology and safety, which have
been achieved thanks to its Racing Rules,
which enable racing with substantial parity
of competition, despite using engines of
conceptually diverse designs.
PROPELLERS:
From 1st January 2009 there will be 1
supplier of propellers for Class 1.
The Propeller thickness cannot be
altered, and will be specified by
the manufacturer and/or the WPPA.
Propeller cup may be altered; however,
this will void any warranty claim that
may arise. The manufacturer will
specify the areas that can be modified.
Three sets of propellers which were
used in the 2008 season can be
registered and used for the 2009
season and can only be replaced with
the official supplier’s Class 1 2009
specification propellers.
All Propellers must adhere to the
Minimum thickness.
Three different pairs of propellers per
boat will be allowed. Propellers can
only be changed for the identical type
as those initially registered, due to
damage or wear.
Propellers will be allocated to a boat,
for use on that boat only. For instance
a two-boat team may not swap
registered propellers from one boat to
the other. However a two-boat team
with fewer than 4 sets of registered
propellers may use them on either
boat.
For 2009 Season only, 1x set of
propellers can be changed for a
different diameter or pitch during the
racing season.
CREW CONTROL:
The system must be homologated
and fully inspected before installation,
including all drawings and details of
components. The system must meet
the rule and the ‘spirit of the rules’ in
all aspects. The scrutineer’s decision
not to allow any or all components in
the system is entirely at his discretion
and cannot be appealed. The system
cannot be improved, changed or
modified in any way without prior
written approval.
Rule
“All control inputs affecting trimming
and steering of the boat must be
directly provided by the crew. It is not
permitted to interface the operation
of the control surfaces, drives, ballast
tanks, fuel tanks or throttles with any
devices that provide additional control
input, whether electronic, mechanical,
hydraulic, pneumatic, or any other
source.”
Any additional sensing devices, such
as, but not exclusively, those used in
a data acquisition system, must be
demonstrably physically independent
of any individual control system.”
For 790 HP naturally aspirated 4250kg
boats;
Steering must be by either drives or
rudders, not both.
Rudders must only be allowed to move
on one axis (no retractable rudders).
Drives must not steer independently of
each other (no toe in or out underway).
If an electronic tie bar is used, a data
logger must be fitted at the team’s cost.
