Profile<br />

Astrapak Limited and its subsidiaries (“Astrapak” or “the Company” or “the Group”),<br />

headquartered in Sandton, manufacture and distribute an extensive range of plastic<br />

packaging products, achieving annualised revenues in excess of R2,8 billion. The<br />

Group has manufacturing facilities in all the main centres of South Africa and a joint<br />

venture in Mauritius. Astrapak employs 4 100 people in South Africa.<br />

The operations are grouped into four segments – Films, Rigids, Flexibles and<br />

Industrial – and service mainly the food, beverage, personal care and pharmaceutical,<br />

agricultural, industrial and retail markets.<br />

The Group remains focused on service, innovation and technology in<br />

plastic packaging in order to continue to gain an increasing share of the overall<br />

packaging market, and plans to continue to seek expansion through organic and<br />

acquisitive growth.<br />

Mission and vision<br />

Astrapak is a focused group of companies specialising in the production and<br />

supply of plastic packaging materials.<br />

Astrapak will continue to invest in innovative and technologically advanced<br />

companies in order to offer customers specialised packaging products<br />

that exploit the global trend towards plastic packaging. The Group intends<br />

to continue to develop dominant positions in its chosen markets around<br />

the country.<br />

Astrapak’s objective is to build the most sophisticated group of quality<br />

companies that deliver superior growth in earnings and value. This will be<br />

realised through organic development of the Group’s existing businesses<br />

together with the acquisition of companies which meet Astrapak’s<br />

INTERNATIONAL TUBE<br />

TECHNOLOGY<br />

– Cape Town<br />

International Tube Technology (“ITT”)<br />

manufactures industrial cores and tubes, focusing<br />

primarily on the textile/synthetic fibre industry. ITT<br />

has gained an enviable reputation for innovation<br />

and quality in both products and service; and its<br />

entrepreneurial approach and flexibility means<br />

that – when it comes to cores and tubes –<br />

virtually any design specification can be achieved.<br />

Plusnet/Geotex<br />

– Randfontein<br />

Plusnet/Geotex manufactures shadecloth for<br />

industrial and agricultural applications. It also<br />

produces fibres used for reinforcing concrete.<br />

These fibres are being used in the production<br />

of the infrastructure required for South Africa’s<br />

“Gautrain” project.<br />

In addition to textile tubes, ITT supplies a<br />

comprehensive range of cores, tubes and composite<br />

containers, which are produced for a wide range<br />

of packaging applications. ITT also manufactures<br />

edgeboard for use in stabilising pallet loads and for<br />

edge protection. Although mainly used to stabilise<br />

cartons of deciduous and citrus fruit for the export<br />

market, local packers and distributors also use<br />

edgeboard to preserve fruit quality.<br />

The use of edgeboard, combined with stretch<br />

or pallet wrap, provides improved pallet<br />

stability, as well as moisture and dust protection,<br />

representing cost savings while providing<br />

aesthetic appeal.<br />

EAST RAND PLASTICS<br />

– Brakpan<br />

Prides itself on outstanding production quality,<br />

East Rand Plastics produces high- and lowdensity<br />

polyethylene films, converting them<br />

into a range of sophisticated products – from<br />

multilayer film structures to superbly decorated<br />

and wicketed bags for a range of applications.<br />

Applications include refuse bags, carrier bags,<br />

shrink films, heavy-duty fertiliser bags, multilayer<br />

lamination sheeting, tamper-evident formfill-seal<br />

film and packaging for the bakery and<br />

agricultural industries.<br />

PENINSULA PACKAGING<br />

– Cape Town<br />

Widely acknowledged as one of the market<br />

leaders in the manufacture of plain and printed<br />

polyethylene films, sheeting, tubing and bags<br />

(both printed and unprinted), the extensive<br />

product range produced by Peninsula Packaging<br />

is supported by advanced flexographic<br />

printing facilities. The company also boasts<br />

comprehensive bagmaking facilities, catering<br />

for many types of bags – from wicketed bags<br />

through to sealed bags.<br />

These products are primarily used for packaging<br />

fresh fruit and vegetables (for local and export<br />

markets), fresh fish, general food, beverages,<br />

refuse bags and industrial packaging.<br />

PACKAGING CONSULTANTS<br />

– Durban<br />

Initially committed to the plain and construction film<br />

market, Packaging Consultants now also serves the<br />

six- to eight-colour, high-quality print market and<br />

sophisticated bag market.<br />

Major markets include boutique bags, form-fill-seal<br />

packaging material (for confectionery, maize and rice),<br />

bags for poultry, maize, pet food and frozen vegetables,<br />

as well as heavy-duty sacks for agricultural and<br />

chemical products. In a first for South Africa, Packaging<br />

Consultants has introduced Inno-Lok Pre-Zippered film<br />

for form-fill-seal applications. This globally patented<br />

product offers customers greater flexibility in packaging<br />

design and the company enjoys an exclusive marketing<br />

arrangement for the technology.<br />

CITY PACK<br />

– Randburg<br />

Due to the installation of co-extrusion technology,<br />

City Pack has been able to move shrink films into a<br />

new era of sophistication and added value, and is<br />

amongst South Africa’s market leaders in the supply<br />

of co-extruded, printed film for the shrink-wrapping<br />

of food products, beverages and industrial products.<br />

City Pack has also entered the form-fill-seal market and<br />

is a major supplier of high-quality films flexographically<br />

printed in up to eight colours for frozen vegetable<br />

packaging.<br />

TRISTAR PLASTICS<br />

– Aeroton<br />

Tristar Plastics specialises in pallet stabilisation<br />

and related products for the industrial packaging<br />

sector. It manufactures high-quality shrink and<br />

stretch film products, specifically for blue-chip<br />

companies in the cement, brewing, milling, retail<br />

and mining industries.<br />

Tristar’s market success is maintained through<br />

developing integrated partnerships with customers<br />

in order to provide effective packaging solutions.<br />

PACK-LINE HOLDINGS<br />

– East London<br />

With a well-deserved reputation as a “one-stop<br />

packaging shop” , Pack-Line Holdings specialises<br />

in the manufacture of extruded film products –<br />

in both reel form and bags – for the industrial,<br />

agricultural and funeral sectors. In addition to the<br />

extrusion of virgin polymers, this company also uses<br />

recycled material for certain packaging applications.<br />

BARRIER FILM<br />

CONVERTERS<br />

– Durban<br />

Barrier Film Converters specialises in the<br />

manufacture of co-extruded barrier films for use in<br />

vacuum bag and pouch production as well as rollstock<br />

thermoformable films for semi-automated<br />

packaging in the meat, cheese and allied food<br />

industries.<br />

Co-extruded barrier films have many applications<br />

in the industrial market, including packaging<br />

of explosives, detergents, chemicals, paint and<br />

solvents. The company also manufactures highbarrier<br />

films for the wine and allied industries,<br />

ranging from bag-in-box liners to bulk liners for<br />

shipping containers. The recent installation of<br />

a state-of-the-art five-layer cast line will open<br />

opportunities through better quality control and<br />

product innovation.<br />

Key product lines include shrink film and tubing for<br />

an assortment of applications – from prepacked<br />

fruit and vegetables to clothing, linen and<br />

confectionery products.<br />

JJ PRECISION PLASTICS<br />

– Pinetown<br />

JJ Precision supplies all the closures for PAK<br />

2000’s products and serves the food and<br />

industrial injection-moulding markets.<br />

JJ Precision offers a fully-fledged toolroom that<br />

is vital for both the business and PAK 2000,<br />

staffed by qualified toolmakers with extensive<br />

experience in component and mould designs.<br />

THERMOPAC<br />

– Cape Town<br />

Thermopac specialises in the production<br />

of rigid thermoformed PP, HIPS and PET<br />

plastic packaging – mainly for the fresh food,<br />

prepared food, bakery and confectionery<br />

industries, but also for pharmaceuticals and<br />

cosmetics, and some industrial packaging. In<br />

addition, Thermopac extrudes plastic sheeting<br />

for the general thermoforming market. Serving<br />

many South African blue-chip companies, it<br />

has also aligned itself with overseas companies<br />

with which it enjoys technology-sharing<br />

arrangements.<br />

PAK 2000<br />

– Pinetown<br />

PAK 2000’s primary business is the supply<br />

of blow-moulded polyethylene containers –<br />

ranging in size from 200ml to five litres – to the<br />

motor vehicle lubricant sector. The company’s<br />

current focus is on providing innovative and<br />

cost-effective packaging to the petrochemical<br />

industry.<br />

CINQPET<br />

– Denver<br />

Cinqpet offers both single-stage and two-stage<br />

processes for PET conversion, allowing for the<br />

production of the widest possible range of PET<br />

containers – from high-volume water, oil and<br />

carbonated soft-drink bottles through to wide-mouth<br />

jars and specialised cosmetics bottles.<br />

The Cinqpet plant offers the following PET<br />

technologies: injection stretch blow-moulding of PET<br />

containers (single-stage); stretch blow-moulding of<br />

PET containers (two-stage); and injection-moulding<br />

of PET preforms.<br />

PLASTOP KZN<br />

– Prospecton<br />

Plastop KZN is among South Africa’s leading<br />

manufacturers of rigid plastic bottles, jars, closures<br />

and other components for personal-care products<br />

and toiletries.<br />

This ISO 9002-accredited factory is primarily a “hole-inthe-wall”<br />

operation, serving the Lever Ponds Maydon<br />

Wharf plant with packaging products for its personalcare<br />

products.<br />

PLAS-TOP<br />

– Bronkhorstspruit<br />

At the manufacturing plant in Bronkhorstspruit<br />

the accent is on the production and decoration of<br />

packaging for toiletries and personal-care products.<br />

It is at this plant that roll-on balls are manufactured<br />

using a complex procedure that involves blowmoulding,<br />

welding and grinding.<br />

PLAS-TOP<br />

– Denver<br />

Plas-top is dedicated to producing plastic<br />

bottles, jars and closures.<br />

The following technologies are offered:<br />

extrusion blow-moulding of PE, PP and PVC<br />

containers; multi-layer extrusion blow-moulding<br />

of PE and PP containers; injection-moulding of<br />

PE and PP tubs and closures; and decoration of<br />

containers using UV silkscreen printing, foiling,<br />

labelling, pad printing and offset printing.<br />

EUROMATIC<br />

– Bronkhorstspruit<br />

This joint venture between Plastop and Euromatic<br />

A/S is a highly focused and automated plant<br />

dedicated to the manufacture of 1.4” (35,6mm)<br />

hollow PP roll-on balls.<br />

As the world’s leading manufacturer of hollow<br />

plastic balls, Euromatic was the natural choice<br />

to partner Plastop, which had already been<br />

manufacturing hollow balls for almost 20 years.<br />

The commissioning of the new factory took place<br />

in early 2005.<br />

PLASTECH<br />

– East London<br />

The PlasTech group of companies (“PlasTech”)<br />

focuses on small plastic containers for the<br />

health- and personal-care, beverage and<br />

industrial markets. In addition to being in a<br />

position to offer polyolefin and PVC products,<br />

PlasTech supplies an extensive range of PET<br />

bottles to the beverage and related industries.<br />

As an added advantage, PlasTech is able to add<br />

value by decorating containers and broadens<br />

the Group’s ability to provide a comprehensive<br />

in-house service.<br />

CONSUPAQ<br />

– Durban<br />

Established to supply short-run, low-volume<br />

packaging to the personal-care market,<br />

Consupaq developed a unique, parallel-walled<br />

jar in 2001 that could be injection moulded, and<br />

is also a major producer of personal-care tubes<br />

to the cosmetic and personal-care industry.<br />

HILFORT PLASTICS<br />

– Cape Town • Bloemfontein<br />

Operating from two plants, situated in<br />

Cape Town and Bloemfontein, Hilfort Plastics<br />

manufactures and distributes rigid plastic<br />

containers and closures, in capacities from 50ml<br />

to five litres.<br />

Hilfort Plastics’ focus is on rigid plastics<br />

packaging, with particular capabilities in<br />

the field of injection blow-moulding (PET),<br />

extrusion blow-moulding (HDPE) and injectionmoulding<br />

of caps and closures. The company<br />

also has screen-printing capability.<br />

PLASTFORM<br />

– Cape Town<br />

Plastform, located in the Western Cape, was<br />

founded in 1980 as an independent company<br />

and has since grown to become South Africa’s<br />

leading supplier of thermoformed cups, tubs<br />

and trays, especially for the dairy and foodrelated<br />

markets.<br />

MARCOM PLASTICS<br />

– Rosslyn<br />

Marcom produces a wide range of thin-wall<br />

injection-moulded polypropylene containers<br />

and lids, including tubs for the dairy industry<br />

(yoghurt, cottage cheese) as well as items such<br />

as beer cups and food trays for the catering and<br />

hospitality sectors.<br />

DIVERSE LABELLING<br />

CONSULTANTS<br />

– Durban<br />

Initially established to supply PVC shrink labels<br />

to the beverage industry, Diverse Labelling<br />

Consultants (“DLC”) has since expanded into<br />

related technologies, such as tamper-evident<br />

neck bands, stretch labels, wraparound labels<br />

and flexible packaging for the confectionery<br />

industry.<br />

TAMPERPAK<br />

– Johannesburg<br />

Tamperpak was established to complement the<br />

products offered by DLC – specifically to supply<br />

the Gauteng and Cape markets for short-run,<br />

undecorated tamper-evident sleeves.<br />

Tamperpak operates in the market of undecorated<br />

tamper-evident sleeves for cosmetic, personal-care,<br />

pharmaceutical, food and industrial products.<br />

DLC operates in South Africa’s labelling market,<br />

and enjoys an ever-growing share of the flexible<br />

packaging market for the country’s major<br />

confectionery manufacturers. It has particular<br />

competence in the market for high-quality, flexoprinted<br />

narrow-web flexible packaging materials.<br />

ASTRAFLEX<br />

– Durban<br />

Situated in custom-designed premises,<br />

Astraflex works in conjunction with DLC,<br />

through a common marketing arm, to<br />

provide customers with the mix-and-match<br />

convenience of a “one-stop shop”.<br />

SAFLITE<br />

– Cape Town<br />

Saflite was established to take advantage of the<br />

burgeoning market in stand-up pouches. In its short<br />

history, this innovative operation has taken a sizeable<br />

share of the stand-up pouch market for both food<br />

and non-food products.<br />

Saflite also offers stand-up pouches with resealable<br />

zippers, providing the added customer convenience<br />

of easily resealable packs – a strong marketing plus<br />

for brand owners. Applications include confectionery,<br />

baking powder, dry yeast, DIY products, pet foods,<br />

pool chemicals and fabric softeners, to name a few.<br />

Customers for the top-class printed flexible<br />

packaging produced by Astraflex include<br />

producers of confectionery, baked products,<br />

frozen products, spices and cereals. There<br />

are also numerous customers in the<br />

pharmaceutical, medical and personal-care<br />

sectors.<br />

One of Saflite’s recent award-winning innovations<br />

is the production of a wine pouch which has<br />

numerous benefits for producers, consumers and<br />

the environment.<br />

ASTRAPAK FLEXIBLES<br />

– Durban • Johannesburg<br />

Astrapak Flexibles is the sales and marketing<br />

company within the Flexibles division. Astrapak<br />

Flexibles strives to provide customers with the<br />

mix-and-match convenience of a “one-stop<br />

shop” for flexible packaging and labelling<br />

solutions.<br />

KNILAM PACKAGING<br />

– Cape Town<br />

Situated in custom-designed premises in<br />

Cape Town, Knilam manufactures specialised<br />

packaging systems utilising Modified<br />

Atmosphere Packaging (“MAP”) technology.<br />

Applications are typically for shelf-life extension<br />

supply and technical support services relating<br />

to Amcor’s “Lifespan” products. This new<br />

development involves creating carton liners,<br />

utilising MAP, that enable fruit to be transported<br />

Astra Repro provides an invaluable service to the<br />

division and the Group as a whole via its dedicated<br />

in-house reproduction facility.<br />

Apart from ensuring that prepress adjustments<br />

and hard-earned know-how remain strictly<br />

confidential, the in-house reproduction<br />

capabilities bring numerous advantages for the<br />

Group operations and their customers, including<br />

improved turnaround times, reduced costs<br />

and improved control over the production of<br />

photopolymer printing plates.<br />

CAPE WRAPPERS<br />

– Paarl<br />

Cape Wrappers has the latest printing,<br />

laminating and blown film equipment<br />

technology. Capabilities include flexographic<br />

printing to eight colours, and a variety of<br />

laminating methods.<br />

Cape Wrappers supplies packaging material to a<br />

number of industries with a focus on blue-chip<br />

and multinational companies, and an emphasis<br />

on long-term relationships with customers. The<br />

factory is AIB certified and has won numerous<br />

awards for its high quality products, both locally<br />

and internationally.<br />

STANDARD LABELS<br />

– Mauritius<br />

Serving the home market in Mauritius, as well<br />

as the wider Indian Ocean Islands, East African<br />

and Southern African markets, Standard Labels<br />

specialises in printing high-quality plastic and<br />

paper labels, packaging films and shrink sleeves.<br />

With a specialised focus on beverage labelling,<br />

Standard Labels enjoys a major share of the<br />

Mauritian, Réunion and East African markets.<br />

ALEX WHITE<br />

– Johannesburg<br />

Alex White is a sheet-fed litho printer<br />

specialising in a number of packaging niche<br />

markets. The major products supplied are<br />

in-mould labelling, wrap around labels and<br />

canning labels.<br />

The company is a significant supplier of<br />

pre-paid cellular phone cards in addition to<br />

horticultural packaging in East and southern<br />

the Board on 27 March 2007. She has<br />

10 years’ experience in the mining<br />

industry within various human<br />

resources-related roles and has worked<br />

in a wide variety of capacities. She is<br />

a senior adviser to Royal Bafokeng<br />

Holdings (“RBH”), and a member of the<br />

executive team. Prior to joining RBH<br />

in February 2007, she was the Vice<br />

President, Human Capital of Lonmin<br />

Plc, South African operations. She was<br />

a member of the executive as well as<br />

the Chief Executive Forum of Lonmin.<br />

Prior to that she was the head of<br />

transformation at De Beers Consolidated<br />

Mines and a member of that company’s<br />

executive committee. Khumo has also<br />

worked for Anglo American Platinum<br />

Corporation as the Group HR Planning<br />

Consultant and has occupied senior<br />

HR roles at Transnet and Goldfields of<br />

of Ampaglas (Pty) Limited by Murray &<br />

Roberts Holdings Limited in 1983, he<br />

was appointed Executive Chairman of<br />

Murray & Roberts Plastics and Abrasives<br />

Corporation Limited. Following Kohler<br />

Limited’s acquisition of Murray &<br />

Roberts Plastics Limited in 1992, he was<br />

appointed Chief Executive Officer of<br />

Kohler Plastics Limited and appointed to<br />

the board of Kohler Limited in 1994. A<br />

member of the Plastics Federation since<br />

1982, President of the Plastics Federation<br />

for three years and a member of the<br />

steering committee for the Department<br />

of Trade and Industry’s sponsored<br />

cluster study for the plastics industry,<br />

he is currently a director of the board of<br />

the Packaging Council of South Africa<br />

(PACSA) and a member of the executive<br />
