Magis...Seeking Excellence
Among the many Jesuit catch phrases is Magis, which refers to the concept of seeking excellence for the
greater service to God and neighbor. After the elation of our first graduation, our team took a step back and
strategized for the future. In 2011-12, the examples of Magis within our community are numerous.
For instance, the word is out in the community about our school and its mission to prepare students for
success in college and life. For the second consecutive year, more than 100 families chose our school for
their 9th grade students. Moreover, we have expanded our relationships with partnering middle schools
from which a record 221 8th graders applied.
Consequently, more students means the need for more jobs; for every four students we enroll, we need one
more job. The Hire4Ed poster board in the entrance of our school shows 90 companies and organizations
where our students worked in 2011-12.
Our graduate count is now in the triple digits at 114; 85% are in college or serving in the U.S. military, while
others work to support themselves and their families. We established more traditions when we welcomed
our alumni back for social gatherings during Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks and in early June.
Indeed, the claim that Cristo Rey Jesuit High School has on its graduates, and they on us, is remarkable.
Our graduates are even expanding their own Cristo Rey networks; as with two graduates whose college
roommates are alumni of other Cristo Rey network schools.
In Arts and Athletics, with the leadership of our Director of Extra-Curricular Activities, we expanded our
boys and girls soccer, basketball and track and field schedules, organized our first ever drama presentations,
and spotlighted student artwork throughout the school.
We thought that our first graduation was a “mountain top” experience, yet we did not reach the summit.
Rather, we simply reached a high plateau with a beautiful vantage point. We have set our sights higher.
That is the beauty of the Magis– as with the kingdom of God, it is never fully present, never fully achieved,
but a continual goal by which we are renewed and strengthened. Thank you for your on-going support in
our pursuit of Magis.
Commendations and Recommendations
November is the time of remembrance, reflection and thanksgiving. In
November of 2011, Cristo Rey Jesuit High School hosted AdvancED,
our accrediting agency; the Commonweal Foundation, a key partner and
benefactor in this mission; and the Cristo Rey Network in successive weeks.
Each group reviewed our community, practices, curriculum and authenticity.
Over the three weeks we were commended for our commitment to the
mission and our students. We were recognized for our rigorous curriculum
that authentically teaches 21st century skills, our strong sense of partnership
between teachers, support staff, parents, work supervisors and students
and how all levels of practice center on removing barriers that would hinder
student success. The AdvancEd accreditation team even suggested that we
should pursue accreditation with distinction in the next cycle.
Each group also offered recommendations. As usual, strengths can also be
weaknesses. It was recommended that we help our faculty and staff to find
work life balance. Each group was worried that our commitment to removing barriers to student success would cause
burnout and high rates of faculty and staff turnover. Gratefully, up until now, we have not experienced high turnover,
but nevertheless we reflected and strategized over the second semester on how we could continue to support student
success in a more efficient manner.
While hosting these teams required a great deal of our time and attention, we welcomed the third-party perspectives
that they were able to provide. As November closed, we were thankful for the assurances and the input (and thankful
that the reviews were over!). And we are excited to continue to refine our mission and partner with great supporters like
you to better serve our community.
Welcoming the Newest
Members of Our Community
This year also brought bountiful blessings to the families of our faculty
and staff. A total of nine administrators, faculty or staff are welcoming
new children into their families. Students, faculty and staff alike are enjoying
the new additions to community. Of one thing we can be sure – our next
faculty and staff family gathering will not be a quiet one.
Setting high standards
Gabriel Jara ’14 achieved a first at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School. Gabriel was
recognized not once, but twice as “Student of the Session,”—an award given
five times a year by teachers to the student who has most excelled in his/her
classes and maintains exceptionally positive relationships with teachers and
peers. Gabriel was selected his freshmen and sophomore years.
The oldest of five, born to Ecuadorian parents, Gabriel’s family motivates him
to persevere and get the best education he can. “I want to get the most out
of my education, which shapes my future. It shapes what I am going to be.
There is no one from my family who has gone to the university. I want my parents to be proud of me and feel
happy because I tried really hard and got into a good university.”
Gabriel tries to teach the same values to his younger siblings, helping them with their homework at night before
starting his own. “They want me to just give them the answers, but instead, I try to help them understand.”
Helping his siblings is not enough. Gabriel also tutors students of Urban
Ventures’ Learning Lab each week after school. Gabriel says, “It’s so important
to give back to the community. It feels good. It makes you want to keep coming
back and teaching them.”
Gabriel has set high goals for his future; he wants to be a doctor and knows his
Cristo Rey Jesuit High School teachers will support him. “They are very helpful
and very intelligent. They take the time to help me. They care.”
Gabriel’s English teacher, Mr. Andrew Baron has no doubt Gabriel will
accomplish this goal. “I’ve never met another student with the same level of
commitment to his long-term goals. He wants to go to Harvard Medical School,
and he has the determination to get himself there.”
And who knows….this year might bring a “three-peat” as Student of the Session.
Hire4Ed Work-Study:
Small Things Make a Big Difference
In the words of Mother Teresa, “Not all of us can do great things. But
we can do small things with great love.” It’s not just the major financial
contribution our Hire4Ed Work-Study companies provide that makes
the program a success...it’s also the small things done with great love.
It starts with what our committed supervisors do on a daily basis.
By being punctual, dressing professionally, and doing their jobs
well, our supervisors act as great role models that instill confidence in our students and transform the way our the way
our students view work. In little ways, like remembering a student’s birthday, taking a student to lunch to celebrate
academic success, or holding a student worker accountable for a simple mistake, supervisors teach our students the
importance of building relationships at work and gives them a sense of job well done.
We partner with 90 companies and organizations and hundreds of employees. We’ll never know all the little things they
do to make a big difference in our students’ lives. We are grateful to them for helping to prepare our students for life.
One student said it best when she said, “My supervisor always makes
me feel confident and pushes me to do more. To her I have potential”
Meg Brudney
Executive Director, Hire4Ed
Part of the Leonard, Street and Deinard Family
Brianna Gay ’13 was part of the first team of student workers to join the legal firm Leonard, Street, and Deinard in 2010,
the year the firm joined the Hire4Ed work-study program. After a year working in the Records Department, she joined
the Human Resources (HR) Team, led by Heidi Burton, Director of HR.
Brianna quickly became an important and highly valued member of Burton’s team. “There has always just been this
comfort level with ‘Bri’ coming into our department. She comes to her job with a positive attitude—high energy, willing
to learn, willing to pick up whatever it is that we need her to do.”
Brianna assists HR assistant, Katie, to manually enter resumes received in HR.
It’s not Brianna’s favorite task, but she understands how even the simplest task
is important to her team. “It makes me feel better when I enter the resumes
for Katie, because then she doesn’t have a whole ton of work on her back.”
Burton introduced Brianna to the Director of Research Services. The director
volunteered to support Brianna in her college search. She helped Brianna
research schools, connect with alumni and even develop a timeline for her
college application process.
Through the Hire4Ed program at the firm, Brianna found more than a job; she
feels part of something special. “At Leonard, Street and Deinard, it’s not just
like working with co-workers; it’s like they are my family.”
Leonard, Street, and Deinard is a champion of the Hire4Ed program. They are committed to developing our students
and it is paying off. Brianna plans to go to law school and become a immigration lawyer. We and Brianna can’t thank
them enough.
Students worked in 90 companies and organizations
throughout the Twin Cities.
Our students work hard! They earned $1.6 million – almost 50% of the total cost of their education. But students
acquire so much more through their Hire4Ed jobs. One student recently shared, “My Hire4Ed job has made a better
student, a better worker, and overall I am more mature than I ever was.” THANK YOU Hire4Ed companies and
supervisors for all you do for our students and Cristo Rey Jesuit High School.
Hard Work Continues in College
Our second graduating class was like raising our second child. We had more
confidence, more experience, and more knowledge of what works with our
students. Our parents became more involved as we expanded our weekend
campus visits from four colleges to eight. More of our students were accepted to
and enrolled in out-of-state colleges. They applied for more scholarships. More
underclassmen became involved in a college-going culture by attending college
fairs, meeting admissions officers, attending summer enrichment programs and
learning about career options.
Our graduates add so much to fueling our students’ dreams by sharing their stories
of what it’s like to go to college. One co-ed who is now studying at Santa Clara University put it this way to the senior
class: “You have to be willing to work really hard to make it in college. And you all can do that, because you go to Cristo
Rey, and you learn to work hard here while you’re still in high school. So listen to your teachers. Work more. !Sí se puede!”
Florida: Here They Come
Maguie Najera ‘12 and Kelyn Colindres ’12 always knew they wanted to go away to
college, but getting accepted was just the beginning of their journey. Their dreams
came true when they were accepted into St. Leo’s University, Tampa, FL. Along the way,
a Hire4Ed Work-Study supervisor, Linda Bielke, at Delta Airlines, helped the girls realize
their dreams.
When Delta Airlines joined the Hire4Ed program in August 2011, Bielke and her coworkers
didn’t know what to expect of the three teen-agers that were going to be with
them each week at Delta. Nevertheless, Bielke and Kelyn became close as they worked
together throughout the year. “They became more like family,” said Kelyn.
Kelyn shared her college application process with Bielke, who was one of the first to
know when she decided to go to St. Leo’s. Excited for Kelyn. Bielke started thinking,
“But, how is she going to get down there?” Bielke knew that as much as they might
want to, Kelyn’s family wasn’t able to bring her to Florida. Bielke graciously offered to
accompany the girls.
On the evening of August 16, Kelyn and her friend and classmate, Maguie Najera ’12, met Bielke at the Minneapolis/ St.
Paul airport to fly stand-by, using Kelyn and Bielke’s flying privileges, to Atlanta, in the hopes of catching a connecting
flight the next morning to Tampa.
They made it to Atlanta with six hours before their flight the next morning—so Bielke, Kelyn, Maguie and all their
belongings spent the night on a bench at the Atlanta airport.
Bielke’s generosity did not end there. Upon arriving in Tampa, she rented a car and accompanied the girls shopping for
all of their dorm room necessities. On move-in day, Bielke brought them to St. Leo’s and helped them settle into the
campus life.
Bielke says she was happy to help the girls. “It wasn’t a big deal. It was good for me to do something for Kelyn.”
Months later, Kelyn and Maguie are enjoying St. Leo’s, but still struggle to express their gratitude. “We could have
never done this by ourselves,” Maguie says, “I really don’t know how to thank her.”
Where Are They Now
After many joyous college acceptances and two emotional graduation ceremonies, we have 114 graduates. Our students
continue to beat the odds and outperform other students just like them across the country; 85% of our graduates are
enrolled in college or are serving in the military. Currently, our graduates are studying in over 40 colleges and universities
in 16 states.
100 Years of Giving Back at
Dorsey and Whitney
The law firm of Dorsey and Whitney, a Hire4Ed employer since 2007, is
celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. As part of the celebration,
Dorsey planned a number of special events including a volunteer event,
supporting Cristo Rey Jesuit High School. Planning committee member,
Marlene Curtis explains, “We wanted to do a community event that would
include our clients. Because so many of our clients also are involved with
Cristo Rey, we thought it was a wonderful opportunity to do the baskets
for the graduating class.”
Curtis and her co-worker, Kristen LeRoux, both Hire4Ed supervisors, formed a committee to organize the event in
collaboration with Micki O’Flynn, our college counselor. “Many of our students are the first in their families to go to
college. They don’t realize they need a shower caddy or extra-long twin bed sheets.”
On April 26, college baskets were assembled for our more than 50 graduates. Attorney partners, staff, and clients put
school supplies in backpacks and made fleece blankets for student dorm rooms.
Our graduates were surprised with the baskets the day before graduation at a special “Senior Shower.” Curtis and LeRoux
were on hand to get the Christmas morning-like feeling of watching students dig into their baskets of college goodies.
Students were overwhelmed with gratitude. One wrote in their thank you card, “Thank you for all the great things for my
dorm room. Your support really means a lot to us! This will really make going to college a lot easier for me and my family.”
9
Giving Time and Talents
Cristo Rey Jesuit High School volunteers are essential to our
mission. Dedicated professionals and local college students give
of their time each day to support our students in their journey to
college graduation. When Tom Coulter, long-time Cristo Rey Jesuit
High School volunteer and supporter, introduced Richard Geis to
our school, it was the beginning of a full-time commitment for Geis
and a life-long friendship.
Geis admits that the Cristo Rey model immediately caught his
attention, “I thought, wow, that’s interesting. I’ll find out more
about it.” Soon after, Geis found himself in Math teacher Don
Beach’s classroom… all day, almost every day of the week.
“He trained me. He put me to work.”
Putting in just about as many hours as regular staff members, Geis is a staple in Beach’s classroom four days a week. “It’s
really fun because I feel like I can really help; I can really make a difference.”
At graduation last June, Geis was able to witness the fruits of his labors. He was impressed with the gratitude and joy of
both students and their families. “From all of the cheering and clapping, you could tell how much they appreciate Cristo Rey.”
Geis is too modest to take any credit for the role that he plays at the school. He signs his emails “Assistant to the
assistant, to the aide third-removed, for Mr. Beach.” “I do it for the students, truly. They benefit from anything I can do
to make Mr. Beach’s job easier.”
To Geis, Cristo Rey Jesuit High School is a unique opportunity not only for him, but for our students. “I never saw a high
school where the principal greeted everyone outside at the door in the morning. That’s incredible.”
“This is a perfect model. You have teachers here who are dedicated! And you continue to support students all the way
to college. I hope this just keeps on growing and growing,” says Geis.
Our students achieve more because of volunteers like Richard Geis, who truly become part of our community.
Goodbye Mortgage
One thing that we don’t have more of after the 2011-12 school year are
mortgage payments. Thanks to our founding leadership, board of directors,
and generous benefactors, we are thrilled to announce that as of July 2012
the mortgage on our building is paid off.
To celebrate the milestone, we invited school founders to help us shred the
mortgage that was issued back in 2006 when ground was broken on the Colin
Powell Youth Leadership Center. Among the guests were Pat and Ann Ryan
and Colleen Ryan (on the left with current board chair, Tim Kosiek, founding
board chair, Brian Murray, and Fr. Tim Manatt, S. J.). Ryan Companies’ support
and partnership was fundamental to the construction of the Colin Powell Youth
Leadership Center. Pat Ryan shared, “Cristo Rey Jesuit High School is one of the
best things Ryan Companies has ever done.”
10
Families choose Cristo Rey Jesuit High School because they want their children to
succeed in college and life. Students willingly agree to a longer school year, put in
longer days, and attend summer enrichment programs. Most importantly, they go
to work – at jobs in our corporate work-study program where they earn half the
cost of their education.
In turn, we offer these motivated young people a superb, Catholic, college-preparatory education. We are proud of our
students, whose achievements are supported by devoted teachers, staff, volunteers and the Jesuit community.
The “secret” to our success is the students’ hard work coupled with the investment of many partners. And the critical
investment is the tremendous financial support we receive from many faithful donors. Thank you!
Donors truly did “more” to serve our students. In fact, in this year’s report, we needed three more pages for donor
names! So, in addition to your annual gift, please continue to advocate for our students and Cristo Rey Jesuit High
School. We would love to add more names and pages to next year’s annual report.
The Dream That’s Working
In October 2011, Earvin “Magic” Johnson was the featured speaker for our
joint fundraiser with Urban Ventures, “The Dream That’s Working.” “Magic”
took the time to address our students in an all school assembly before the
event. He encouraged students to continue in their studies and to work
hard despite adversities. “You may be poor, but don’t have poor dreams.”
