Citizens Working to Bring Clean Energy Solutions to Colorado

Global warming is unequivocal and attributable to anthropogenic emissions of

greenhouse gases according to the thousands of scientists that have contributed to the

Nobel-prize winning work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change; 1

Carbon dioxide emissions are the largest contributor to global warming and ocean

acidification and the isotopic signature identifies the carbon dioxide as coming from

fossil fuel burning;

The consequences of global warming on all continents and in all ecosystems are likely to

be very serious and include extreme weather events, water shortages, reduced agricultural

and forest productivity, sea level rise, ecosystem disruption and species extinction;

The Arctic Sea Ice is melting three decades sooner than the most conservative models

predicted and the loss of the summer Arctic Ice could intensify summer heat waves in the

Northern Hemisphere while also accelerating the release of carbon from the permafrost;

Top climate scientists have stated that the planet is at risk of runaway climate change and

that urgent and aggressive actions to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other

greenhouse gases are needed;

Coal plants are the largest single source of carbon dioxide in Colorado, 2 emitting almost

twice as much carbon dioxide as that from all the motor gasoline consumed in the state

and over 10 times as much CO2 as other industrial processes;

Boulder’s Valmont coal plant emits approximately 1.3 million tons of carbon dioxide per

year, along with thousands of tons of other pollutants and typically over 20 pounds of

mercury per year while consuming over 2 million gallons of water a day;

The carbon dioxide emitted by the Valmont coal plant is equivalent to 215,000 passenger

cars, the electricity use of 156,000 households or the CO2 sequestered by 30 million tree

seedlings grown for 10 years; 3

The City of Boulder has committed to meeting the Kyoto protocol and citizens voted in

2006 to tax themselves to achieve climate protection goals, indicating the strong

commitment of Boulder’s residents to move forward with greenhouse gas reductions;

Boulder is unlikely to meet even the modest goals of complying with the Kyoto Protocol

unless it decarbonizes its electric supply and begins building the carbon-free

infrastructure that will help fuel the economy of the 21 st century;

Failure to take action is to abdicate our responsibility to future generations, other

cultures, other species and to the stewardship of the planet;

Therefore...

The undersigned support the retirement of the Valmont coal plant at the

earliest possible date--preferably beginning no later than 2010.
