THE
FORUM
Together Freedom Through Access and Choice
After 5 years at the helm, my term as President of the Board
is drawing to a close. I have thoroughly enjoyed this time as
President and I have learned a great
deal. It has been an honour to serve
such a wonderful organization.
I would like to thank the many people
that have been so helpful to me. Above
all are the staff members of ILCWR.
They in particular have made this
position look easy to everyone and I
appreciate their pleasant and helpful
assistance. I would also like to thank the
entire Board for their dedication and
support.
I would like to invite all of you to our upcoming Annual
General Meeting on September 17th, 5:00 pm at the Aud. At
that time new officers will be elected and our new board
members will also take their elected positions.
Before I close I would also encourage everyone to attend our
ACCESS 2010 show to be held at The Kitchener Auditorium
on September 17/18 of this year. This show highlights all the
services that are available to us in this Region, and beyond!
MESSAGE
f r o m t h e
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
It is a busy summer indeed here at ILCWR. As you will
see in this issue of the FORUM, plans are well underway
for ACCESS 2010, our exhibition of products and
services for independence. Building on the success of
previous shows, ACCESS 2010 will bring together
vendors and service providers at the Kitchener
Memorial Auditorium to showcase their products. I
encourage everyone to drop by the show on September
17 and 18.
Each year ILCWR reaches more than 4000 individuals with our education and
awareness programs. These programs aim to break down barriers to make our
communities more welcoming and accessible. This summer we will launch Kids
Like Me!!!, a new activity book aimed at supporting these programs.
Summer is a time for BBQ’s here at ILCWR. Several of our supportive housing
projects have already hosted their own. Shamrock kicked off the season on
June 23 with a successful event and last week almost 90 people joined in the
fun at our Kiwanis Project. We are looking forward to seeing you all out at the
ILCWR Family BBQ in Victoria Park on August 11 th .
Successes keep rolling in on our journey to help people live independently in
the community. The mother of a consumer recently wrote, “Thanks again for
this great service. It has definitely made a difference in our whole family's
lives, especially for the development of my son's independence… We are so
grateful for this program now having seen its impact.” That comment sums up
the good work our dedicated staff do in delivering these essential programs
and the impact we are having every day.
Please show your support for our agency by coming out to one of our events
and meet amazing people behind our stories. Until then, enjoy the rest of your
summer.
ILCWR Believes in advocating for the elimination
of barriers and in challenging public attitudes!
Successes Stories
of ILCWR
Despite the morning rain on June 9, the Tournament of Hope proved again to be
a success. After 13 years, the Tournament continues to bring dollars to those in
need of assistive devices.
Ninety-eight golfers braved the wet greens to play for a great cause. With
generous sponsorship and donations of items, thousands of dollars were raised to
support people with disabilities in our community.
The silent auction and raffle were successful and many golfers left with
impressive prizes and of course a full stomach. Once again, Grand Valley Golf
Club provided a spectacular meal.
The course has been booked for next year - June 8, 2011. Planning has begun in
hopes of providing more financial support to those in need.
2010 Tournament of Hope Recipients
Over the past 13 years your participation and contributions have raised over
$265,267 and assisted 95 individuals and families in our community!
Zhade Thompson is an incredibly bright and amazing
young woman, who enjoys being active and spending
time with family and friends. Due to her many
medical appointments, Zhade was in need of a new
wheelchair accessible van that could accommodate
her changing needs. The Tournament of Hope is
proud to help her attain this goal!
David Staley - specialized bathroom equipment
Elvie Allgeier - accessible outdoor environment
Alan Slater – new wheelchair
Barry Howell – special adaptive bed
Doug Ludolph - low air loss mattress
Sharon Bridgman - adaptive communication device
Fay King - specialized bathroom equipment
Shirley Saunders - home wheelchair lift
Thank you to all who participated!
Italian Bistro and
Cake Auction
On Saturday May 1, 2010 ILCWR hosted their first Italian
Bistro and Auctions Evening and it was a smashing hit.
Local MP for Kitchener—Centre, Stephen Woodworth
started the evening off with a special welcome to all. The
evening involved a lovely Italian bistro prepared by our
very own Master Chef, Wolfgang Stutz, and the food was
superb. There was a silent auction with a wide variety of
items that local businesses had donated, which brought
out the competitive side of some people. To end the Bistro
off we had a live Cake Auction, which brought out everyone’s true spirited nature
for a sweet treat. In the end we raised over $1,800 dollars that will go toward
the Access Fund! We would like to say a big thanks to all who came out and
supported this event.
Aging At Home
“I knew I’d be healthier at home. I needed to get out of the hospital and be
back in my home, raising my granddaughters. I wanted to live by my own
schedule, eat the food I like, and once again, play an active role in my family.”
Mary Anne, age 73
The Independent Living Centre of Waterloo Region (ILCWR) supports people
with disabilities to live in their own homes and be active members of their
community.
The overall goal of the Waterloo Wellington Local Health Integration Network’s
(WWLHIN) Aging at Home strategy is ”to provide a suite of services for seniors
to enable them to live as independently as possible, in a safe home of their
choice,” so partnering with ILCWR was a clear choice to make this happen. With
a $575,000 investment from the WWLHIN, ILCWR has been able to offer daily
supports and services to over 30 people.
The services offered by ILCWR help individuals and help the health care system.
Through Aging at Home, Outreach, and Supportive Housing as well as a variety
of social and recreational supports, ILCWR is able to support people to live with
dignity, and be active members of society. Pressures on Emergency
Departments and hospitals are reduced by offering people a choice. After having
spent 1 ½ years in hospital, and rehab, and being told that Long Term Care
Home was her best option, Mary Anne says
“going home with the support was the best choice I could have made. I’m
getting stronger all the time! Thanks ILC.”
Kids Like Me!!!
ILCWR has a new activity booklet for children aged 6-12. It is filled with fun
activities, characters to colour as well as helpful information to reinforce the
message of inclusion. This booklet will be distributed to audience members
of our programs - Kids on the Block, ACCESS 4 ALL or the Speakers
Bureau.
To find faces for the new activity book we held a design contest for
Conestoga College Media and Design students. Two classes were given a
description of 6 characters that represented children in our community with
disabilities including Down syndrome, Spina bifida and more. After
considering a great number of wonderful creations we finally chose a
winner.
