‘PAGID RS’ COMPETITION BRAKE PADS
Bremsen Technik GmbH (Bt) is the Motorsport division of PAGID. Our high performance brake pads are
marketed under the ‘PAGID RS’ brand.
With facilities in Rosbach and Essen in Germany, Bt is one of only a small number of companies capable of
developing and manufacturing brake friction for use in the premier Motorsport competitions including
Formula 3, World GT Racing, Touring Cars and Porsche Super Cup.
In addition Bt brake pads are fitted as original equipment to some of the most prestigious and powerful
production cars in the world including Porsche and Ferrari, and in particular where Carbon Ceramic disc
technology is used.
Bt brake pads are available to fit many of the popular racing caliper applications (see page 18) and also
may be fitted as an upgrade to many standard calipers for high performance cars (see pages 19–28).
Bt pads are produced in several different material formulations – each one the product of thousands of
hours of testing and development work. Information about our materials is given on page 3.
Bt pads are designed to produce the highest possible performance levels over a wide range of operating
conditions.
‘PAGID RS’ MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS
PAGID Racing Brake Pads are produced in nine different compounds. PAGID racing compounds are
complex formulations with very high ceramic material content. The main difference in comparison to
“Metallic compounds” is the superior thermal insulation and higher heat resistance.
PAGID Racing Brake pads are specifically developed for Motorsport use. However subject to the
requirements of “Regulation 90” they may also be fitted to road cars (RS4-2-1 and RS4-2-2 in particular)
where exceptional braking performance from high speed is required. This may be particularly relevant
when driving in European countries with unrestricted roads.
RS 4-2 (blue) Carbon Based
Few brake friction compounds are as highly
regarded as PAGID RS4-2 (known by many as
'PAGID Blue'). Originally developed in the late
1980's RS4-2 remains our biggest selling and most
versatile friction compound.
Technically, RS4-2 is a carbon based compound
with a medium friction level. It has an excellent
low temperature response, remains very stable
over a wide temperature range, and can withstand
constant temperatures up to 600°C.
RS4-2 is a very user-friendly compound with
excellent modulation and 'feel'. Drivers report excellent pedal-feel that gives confidence in
extreme braking situations. With its optimum blend of performance characteristics RS4-2 is
widely used across many forms of Motorsport from single seaters (Formula 3), through sports
car racing (Britcar), to Group N rallying on gravel and wet tarmac surfaces.
Increasingly, it is the preferred choice of brake friction for competitors in both historic rallying
and circuit racing. Subject to the requirement of Regulation EC90, it is also widely fitted as an
upgrade material for road cars.
Another significant advantage of RS4-2, in comparison to many competitor products, is its
relatively low wear rate on the brake discs. Inferior pads may appear to work well for a short
period, but the wear rate of the pads and the brake discs can be very high.
Over the course of a season the PAGID RS4-2 product will often show not only a performance
advantage but will prove very cost effective when the replacement cost of pads and discs is
calculated. PAGID RS4-2 is available in over 100 different pad shapes covering most of the
popular racing calipers and many high performance road car applications.
RS 4-2-1 (black) Carbon Based
A Carbon based high performance road
compound with a medium friction level.
Designed as the ultimate user friendly road
material to satisfy the demands of prestige
sports car manufacturers such as Porsche,
Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati. Capable
of driving effectively around town with low
noise and control, then capable of stopping
the same vehicle from 200mph on the test
track.
The material is also suitable for light track use, but if serious, regular track use is planned we
recommend the use of a higher specification race material such as RS4-2, RS14, RS29.
RS4-2-1 exhibits good wear characteristics and is also very easy in terms of disc wear and low
brake dust. The perfect combination of low temperature performance, good initial bite, low
disc wear and user friendliness for high performance road use.
This compound also forms the basis for the PAGID Sport pad range, same performance benefits
but with the addition of dark blue coating also on the friction surface, anti noise shims on most
pads and also piston clips and similar hardware fitted to the pads.
The special dark blue coating assists with the initial bedding stage, disintegrating during the
first few brake applications without any loss of performance normally associated with green
fade.
RS4-4 (orange) Carbon Based
A Carbon based friction material developed
from RS4-2 but with a progressively increasing
friction curve, giving it lower friction than RS4-
2 below 300°c and higher friction above 300°c.
It offers slightly less initial bite and low
temperature response than RS4-2, but with
the same high levels of controllability.
The wear rate of RS4-4 is very similar to RS4-
2, but is slightly better in terms of wear at
higher temperatures. Disc wear, as with all
other PAGID materials, is exceptional and
thermal stressing and tension cracks of the
disc surface are greatly reduced.
RS4-4 also has extended operating
temperature limits, increasing fade resistance, and allowing braking deeper into the corner
without wheel lock and fading issues.
This compound is available in fewer pad shapes than RS4-2, and is particularly popular in
Porsche club racing, and has been fitted as an OEM on such high performance road vehicles as
Porsche 993 RS and GT2 for example. In road applications this compound exhibits low brake
noise.
A very versatile pad for use on both front and rear axle’s, is also a very good rear pad in
conjunction with RS14 / RS15 on front axles of front wheel drive touring cars, etc.
RS5 (Blue) Ceramic Based
New for 2006 RS5 is the latest
development from the engineers
at PAGID, the design criteria was
for a material specific for F3.
However initial feedback shows
that this compound is a great all
rounder.
RS5 is a ceramic based friction
material with a medium level of
friction and smooth strong initial bite
giving instant response. RS5 offers
the most consistent level of friction of
all PAGID compounds, making it
much easier to brake very hard and
still having complete control over the
braking event. This allows the ability to brake very late into the corner with confidence, we
have seen 10 meters later than our major competitor’s product with no issue of wheel lock.
While still in prototype stage in mid 2005 test sets were issued to a major F3 team, with no
prior testing the pads were installed into 2 cars, one of these cars qualified on pole for both
races and took lights to flag victories.
This compound displays exceptional control with RS5 displaying the flattest torque curve of all
of the PAGID compounds, a higher average friction level than RS4-2 and an increased
operating temperature of 650°C with increased pad life at higher temperatures.
Currently only available in a limited number of pad shapes, but this will increase in the near
future.
RS-14 (black) Ceramic Based
RS14 is our most popular ceramic based
friction material. Compared to RS4-2 this
compound offers a good increase in initial bite
and average torque, it has very good
modulation characteristics and offers good
control against wheel lock at all temperatures.
While showing a reduction in pad wear,
particularly at high temperatures it is still very
easy in terms of disc wear and shows a
reduction in surface stress fractures. RS14
will also tolerate much higher working disc
temperatures than RS4-2 extending further
the fade resistance.
RS14 is also used as an OEM material and supplied as an up-graded track day pad by Lotus
Motorsport department. It has been shown to exhibit the most suitable level of braking force,
control and modulation on popular track day cars such as Lotus Elise and Caterham. Offering
consistent levels of performance and a much longer life than more inferior competitors
products, without excessive disc wear while offering the driver supreme confidence.
Outside the track day environment RS14 has also shown success in short to medium distance
circuit racing as well as gravel and tarmac rallying. RS14 offer very low heat conductivity
which allows less thermal transfer from disc through pad, resulting in lower caliper and brake
fluid temperatures which can have a critical effect on ultimate brake performance.
RS14 has seen good levels of success at many levels of Motorsport, from front applications on
front wheel drive touring cars, front and rear applications on 2 and 4 wheel drive rally cars, as
well as front and rear applications on GT and sports racing cars.
RS-15 (grey) Ceramic Based
RS15 is a ceramic based formulation developed
on the basis of RS14. Suitable for applications
where very high levels of torque are required,
or situations were very high disc temperatures
are experienced.
RS15 combines the benefits of RS14 with
approximately a 20% increase in average
friction and torque, with even greater bite and
braking ability. The increase in bite is often
very useful on cars without servo assistance for
instance that are known to require high pedal
forces to brake the car efficiently.
RS15 also offers a very high level of cold bite,
something that is uncommon with high friction
level compounds. This can be beneficial in situations where adequate warm up periods are not
possible, so this can be an advantage if you can utilize a higher friction level at a lower
temperature range, an advantage at the start of a rally stage for instance.
Another plus with RS15 is the improvements made with the release characteristics of the
material. This allows for much greater levels of control when coming off and going back on the
brake pedal, allowing smoother modulation when the brake reacts more quickly to pressure
changes made at the brake pedal.
The temperature limits of RS15 are greater than any other PAGID material, making disc
temperatures of over 800°c possible to work with. RS15 is relatively easy on discs in
comparison with other friction materials with such high levels of friction, but you will see a
slight increase in disc wear over other PAGID compounds.
RS-19 (yellow) Ceramic Based
RS19 is a development from RS14, a reduction
of the friction level has resulted in a very stable
friction level and a major increase in pad and
disc life.
This material provides very good levels of
performance and response at all temperature
levels, only slight temperature inputs are
required to bring the pad up to its optimum
performance level. A true favourite with
endurance racers having won many classes at all major endurance events, including GT class
victories at the Le-Mans 24 hours race from 1999 – 2006, plus many victories at other blue
ribbon events such as Daytona, Spa, Nurburgring, etc. Due to the exceptional pad life and
very low wear on brake discs it has been possible to run 24 hours with out a change of pads or
discs.
Although designed primarily for endurance racing, because of the consistent levels of
performance and user friendliness many competitors use this material successfully for sprint
and short distance races also. RS19 has also found favour in the growing track day market
due to the level of control, good cold performance, long life and low disc wear.
Many major track day operator fleets have seen the benefit of using PAGID pads for corporate
track days, while not being the cheapest brake pads on the market, we have proved that due
to the longer life and less disc wear in comparison to other competitor’s product, running costs
can be reduced in comparison to cheaper, inferior products.
RS-29 (yellow) Ceramic Based
RS29 is a direct development of RS19, with a
very similar friction coefficient to RS19,
improvements in initial bite offering quicker
response and slightly more temperature stable
at the upper levels of the temperature range.
Developments in raw material selection and
compounding have resulted in improvements
also in pedal feel and feedback, helping with
modulation particularly on lighter applications.
TThis material provides very good levels of
performance and response at all temperature
levels, only slight temperature inputs are
required to bring the pad up to its optimum
performance level. Another favourite with endurance racers having won many classes at all
major endurance events, such as Le-Mans, Daytona, Spa, Nurburgring, etc. Due to the
exceptional pad life and very low wear on brake discs it has been possible to run 24 hours with
out a change of pads or discs. Able to withstand slightly higher disc temperatures than RS19,
this has proved more suitable for applications running very high disc temperatures.
Although designed primarily for endurance racing, because of the consistent levels of
performance and user friendliness many competitors use this material successfully for sprint
and short distance races also. This has been seen in British GT Cup class, winning the
Championship for the last 3 years in races averaging 1-2 hours in duration. RS29 has also
found favour in the growing track day market due to the level of control, good cold
performance, long life and low disc wear.
The same applies to major track day operator fleets who have seen the benefits of using PAGID
pads for corporate track days as an alternative to RS19 in various applications. While not
being the cheapest brake pads on the market, we have proved that due to the longer life and
less disc wear in comparison to other competitor’s product, running costs can be reduced in
comparison to cheaper, inferior products.
It is clear that the customer should look beyond the initial purchase price and make an
accurate comparison with other competitor’s products to find the most cost effective braking
solution. When compared to cheaper pads that wear more quickly and reduce disc life, and
may also not perform consistently to the same level, the initially more costly product can often
work out to be cheaper when calculated over the entire season.
GUIDANCE ON PAD INSTALLATION
When installing Pagid Racing Brake Pads, we recommend you observe the following:
CLEANING DISCS
It is always good practice to clean the surface of the disc to remove any previous pad
deposits and contamination. This is best done by having the discs surface ground, if
this is not possible clean the disc surface with a medium grade emery cloth. This will
allow the new pad to achieve better contact with the grain of the disc surface. As
many high performance friction materials impart a friction transfer layer on the disc
surface, this should be cleaned away when new pads are fitted. This is especially the
case when a change of compound is made.
Failure to clean the disc surface will result in reduced friction and reduced brake pad
life.
MOUNTING NEW PADS ON USED DISCS
When fitting new pads to used discs care must be taken to file the top and bottom edges to 45°
to allow pads to clear high ridges on disc radius. This will allow the pads to fully contact the
disc surface. If the contact area is reduced, hot spots can occur and damage friction material
reducing efficiency. If you are changing to Pagid RS pads from another manufacturer, please
take care to remove all surface deposits from the disc. If this is not done, bedding in may
prove difficult and reduce life and performance of the pads.
BRAKE DISC CONDITIONING (NEW DISCS)
When fitting new discs care must be taken to heat cycle the disc by gradually introducing
moderate temperatures into the disc before high temperatures are reached. The introduction
of high temperatures into the brake disc too quickly can result in thermal shock causing
cracking and disc distortion. Thermal shock can be reduced by also allowing the disc and pad
combination to cool gradually after extreme use, and allowing the vehicle to come to a
complete stop when the brakes are at extreme temperatures should be avoided. (Holding
vehicle in the pit lane on the foot brake). Thermal shock can result from the level of thermal
energy applied, or from the rate the heat is applied and removed. Try to keep the energy
levels gradual by using warming up cycles and cooling down cycles where possible.
This practice will prolong the life of both pad and disc, improve overall brake
performance and help to prevent failures.
GUIDANCE ON BEDDING IN PROCEDURE
WHY BEDDING?
• To transfer a layer of friction material onto the brake disc faces to achieve maximum
performance.
• To stabilize compressible materials to avoid a spongy pedal.
• To boil off volatile elements in the friction compound in order to have the initial ‘green’
fading during bedding and not during the race.
• To align the pad surface with the brake disc surface to have full contact.
If pads do not get bedded properly and / or used too hard right out of the box will likely lead to
pad glazing. Pad glazing is a condition where the resins in the pad crystallize on both, the pad
friction surface and the brake disc surface, resulting in poor stopping performance, brake
judder and vibrations.
Also rapidly escaping volatile elements and moisture from the resin would seek an immediate
escape route out of the friction compound, creating small fissures that would lead shortly to
cracking and chunking.
GEOMETRIC ALIGNMENT OF PAD SURFACE TO DISC SURFACE (BASIC BEDDING IN)
4-6 brake applications with medium pedal pressure from approx 90mph to 50mph, not allowing
wheels to lock. (No brake dragging)
Allow for a distance of 300 - 400metres between brake applications for cooling period.
Pads should not reach temperatures above 400°C during initial bedding in. Check that pad
surfaces have at least 80% contact with disc before allowing more heat into pad surface.
I m m e d i a t e l y f o l l o w e d b y :
BEDDING IN AT HIGH SPEED
1 brake application with medium to high pedal pressure from approx 110mph to 50mph
without allowing wheels to lock.
Allow 3-4 recovery brake applications with light pedal pressure.
Repeat high speed applications including recovery applications another 2-3 times.
Allow a cooling off distance of 500 metres between high speed applications.
B R A K E F A D E T R O U B L E S H O O T I N G
BRAKE FADE CAN BE SEPARATED INTO TWO GROUPS:-
PEDAL FADE
This is the result of the brake fluid boiling in the calipers. This will cause the brake pedal to
feel spongy and pedal travel will increase.
If the brake fluid in the system has boiled, it should be immediately replaced as its ability to
resist boiling has been greatly reduced. Fluid testing should be regularly done as a matter of
course. It should be replaced regularly, or when tests show it has degraded.
Always use the highest-grade fluid possible
PAD FADE
This is the result of friction being lost between pad and disc surface due to the friction material
exceeding its maximum operating temperature, usually due to the build up of hot gases
between the pad and disc surface. The pedal feel remains constant but the vehicle is not
retarded.
If pad fade regularly occurs, an upgrade to a material with a higher operating temperature
should be considered. If the highest specification material is being used, consideration should
be given to increasing disc size if possible, or improving cooling to the brakes.
The main problem area with high performance braking systems is always the control of the
thermal energy. Brake disc and pad temperature analysis can be used to indicate the
temperature range the brakes are operating in. With this information material alternatives and
cooling aspects can be considered and tried.
BACKING PLATE DESIGN
PAGID use a patented system to ensure that the friction material does not de-laminate from the
backing plate even at extreme operating temperatures.
The friction material is attached to the baking plate using two methods, adhesive bonding and
mechanical retention. The patented mechanical retention is accomplished by special brass studs
which are welded to the backing plate and inserted deep into the friction material through the
underlayer, these studs are produced from a special brass type material and will not damage the
brake disc surface. The underlayer assists with the adhesion of the friction material to the backing
plate, and also helps as a thermal barrier. PAGID also use the underlayer as a slightly compliant
structure to improve pedal feel and aid control and modulation, it also reduces disc surface stress
and cracking.
HEAT CRACKS
Multiple hair line cracks in both the pad and disc surface are normal and accepted in this type of
application. And any pad de-lamination is prevented by the patented retention studs.
Heat cracks in the disc surface must never reach the inner or outer edges of the disc. If in doubt
