From the Editor
The scope of cardiology medicine and health science is immense. An individual may not be able
to become proficient in all the subspecialties. The special interest and range of practice of different
cardiologists may diverse. It is the direction of the College to develop subspecialty groups to
organize activities pertinent to the particular subspecialties. The Paediatric Cardiology Chapter is
the first subspecialty organization established under the auspices of the College. It had organized a
symposium on paediatric cardiac arrhythmias in March, and is reported in this Newsletter.
The recent few months were busy for scientific activities. The Annual Scientific Congress had come
to the twentieth year. The College had also organized scientific meetings with other academic and
professional institutes. These included the Multi-specialty Medical MEGA Conference and the 14th
South China International congress of Cardiology. Forthcoming is the Cardiovascular Interventional
Summit Hong Kong 2012 with the Guangdong Provincial Cardiovascular Association, Southern
China Interventional Cardiology Education Net and the Macau Cardiology Association, to be held
in Macau in coming November.
The College always welcomes joined efforts with other academic and professional institutes for
holding scientific activities, for the purpose of medical education, with the firm belief that this
would ultimately benefit the patients, whether they are under the care of cardiovascular medical
professionals or medical professionals in other disciplines.
Cardiac pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a life saving emergency measure. Its science and
techniques have been developing and refining in the past decades. The latest recommendations
include immediate use of defibrillation if available, chest compression only CPR for lay person
rescuer, and new sequence of basic cardiac life support. The Resuscitation Council of Hong Kong
was finally established, despite the many obstacles it had to overcome before its inception. The
College is one of its founding institutes. One of its initial tasks is to arouse public awareness the
need of installation of automated external defibrillators (AED) in public areas, to enable prompt and
effective resuscitation of cardiac arrest. Unavailability of AEDs in many public areas is an aspect in
which Hong Kong lacks behind many modern cities in the world.
The coming two months appear quiescent for College activities. Yet, busy preparations are being
carried out for the activities in the second half of this year. The major annual community activity
of College, the World Heart Day will be launched in September. There will be a prolific range of
activates with addition of new events. Please watch out for future announcement.
Hypertension Treatment Strategy and RAAS Blockade,
22 May 2012
This scientific meeting was held in the evening on 22 May 2012, at Langham Place Hotel,
Kowloon. The speaker was Professor Sverre E. KJELDSEN. Professor KJELDSEN is Professor and
Chief Physician, at the Department of Cardiology, Ullevaal Hospital, University of Oslo, Norway. He
was President of European Society of Hypertension (2005-2007), and a member of the Guideline
Committee of the European Society of Hypertension – European Society of Cardiology. The meeting
was chaired by Dr. LAU Yuk Kong, Council Member of the College.
Prof. KJELDSEN started by reviewing the studies showing the benefits of ARB over other classes
of hypertensive drugs in treatment of hypertension. Thus, he would favour the use of ARB in
hypertension treatment, and would not use age demarcation in the choice of hypertension
medications as advocated in the NICE Guideline.
Differences in blood pressure reduction have been reported among ARBs. The choices between
two different ARBs (losartan and candesartan) did not seem to affect blood pressure levels during
treatment in a real life setting. However, increased use of thiazides in the losartan group was
observed to achieve equal blood pressure reduction.
When comparing the hypertensive primary treatment with two
of the most used ARBs, losartan vs candesaran in Norway,
differences in the risk of cardiovascular disease was observed.
The candesartan group had lower risk of cardiovascular
disease compared with the losartan group.
Biography of Claude Monet
Claude Monet (1840-1926), born Nov 14, 1840 in Paris, was determined to become an artist since
from famous French painters of that period. He moved to Paris and befriended fellow master painters
Auguste Renoir, Édouard Manet and Edgar Degas. They developed new ideas and approach
to art. Drifting away from traditional painting (Realism). They studied and recorded in their paintings
the effects of light, and it’s temporal relationship, on what they actually saw in nature with bright,
broken colours, and rapid, bold brushstrokes, without meticulous details, and this new style of painting
began to be known as Impressionism.
This new movement was not well received initially. In fact, the term Impressionism was coined
by art critic Louis Leroy, who did not intend to use the term as anything complimentary. Rather, the
influential critic scorned at the painting Impression, SUNRISE which Monet presented at a local
exhibition. Leroy and followers thought that this painting was too casually done and probably could
be finished in a few minutes, whereas traditional oil paintings would take weeks to complete.
Monet persisted in his quest for new adventures, and the impressionist movement became unstoppable.
He married Camille Doncieux who died of tuberculosis at a very young age. He became very
depressed. His second woman of his life, Alice Hoschedé, helped put him back on his feet, and Monet
became a prolific and highly acclaimed painter in the late Eighteen Eighties. The family moved to
Giverny and they settled down, built a house and planted a garden, with a water-lily pond in front.
Monet spent a lot of time painting landscapes in around his garden in Giverny, and a lot of his paintings
centered around his water lily pond and the Japanese garden on either side.
It is interesting to note that in 1923, Monet underwent two operations to remove his cataracts.
Paintings done in the few years before his cataract operation generally carried a reddish tone, quite
consistent with the vision of cataract victims. After the surgery, when he could again see ultraviolet
wavelengths of light, his water lilies became bluer!
Monet continued to paint late in his life, until Dec 5, 1926 when he succumbed to lung cancer. His
paintings, however, live on and have been viewed and admired by the thousands in museums all
over the world.
