THE SAAS VALLEY IN
100 SECONDS
WWW.SAAS-FEE.CH

Dear Citizens,
While the whole of Switzerland is busy celebrating 150
years of winter sports, the citizens of the Free Republic
of Holidays Saas-Fee are proud to look back on
a 165-year history of winter sports. It’s a very unique
history – as unique as our 4,000-metre peaks! About
15 years before the “official” dawn of the winter sports
era, Father Johann Josef Imseng whizzed from Saas-
Fee to Saas-Grund on “skis” roughly fashioned from
two wooden planks and thus went down in history as
Switzerland’s first skier. His groundbreaking adventure
had lasting consequences in the Saas Valley …
Wooden planks became winter sports equipment,
wild paths became ski slopes, and pioneers became
legends. Never mind how difficult or dangerous it was
to get up and down a mountain at that time – this addictive
sport swept the Saas Valley off its feet.
But there’s no need to worry; since then we have built
a network of cableways to bring you safely and easily
from A to B, and well-groomed ski slopes with guaranteed
snow cover. It’s no wonder that the Saas Valley
has become one of the world’s best winter sports
areas. Welcome to the Free Republic of Holidays!
Switzerland’s first skier
ANNOUNCEMENT
JOHANN JOSEF IMSENG:
SWITZERLAND’S FIRST SKIER.
THE DAWN OF SKIING IN SWITZERLAND.
SAAS-FEE | SAAS-GRUND | SAAS-ALMAGELL | SAAS-BALEN
Father Johann Josef Imseng (1806 – 1869) was a maverick, visionary
and pioneer. He promoted tourism, led guests on guided tours
of the local mountains and came up with many ideas. He wanted
to use tourism to bring money into the Saas Valley, a poor region
at that time, and to improve the living conditions of its inhabitants.
On 20 December 1849, Father Imseng received an urgent plea to
visit a dying member of his parish in Saas-Grund, but to reach the dying
man he somehow had to traverse the deep snow between Saas-
Fee and Saas-Grund. Father Imseng quickly fastened two wooden
planks to his shoes with straps and laces, and set off on a speedy
descent down to Saas-Grund. His journey would later go down in history
as the first ski run in Switzerland.
Today, a statue of Father Imseng stands as a memorial in the village
square, gazing across at the oldest hotel in Saas-Fee – the Dom. This
hotel was constructed in 1881 as a result of his visionary ideas.
A TRADITION OF SPORTS AND LEISURE
The people of the Saas Valley very quickly recognised
the sporting and leisure potential of their
snow and ice-covered surroundings. And even
though sports trends have changed, some activities
firm tradition.
