FIRST STEPS IN MUSIC:

BECOMING TUNEFUL,

BEATFUL AND ARTFUL

All children are born with the

potential to become musical.

With inappropriate or no musical

experiences children can lose their

intuitions for music. This workshop

will provide a bridge from research

to practice by demonstrating how a repertoire of

traditional children’s songs, rhymes, games and dances

as well as movement with classical music can develop

the next generation of tuneful, beatful and artful

citizens. To achieve this goal, an 8-part curriculum will

be presented for use with preschool and elementary

aged children.

Dr. John Feierabend is considered one of the leading

authorities on music and movement development in

early childhood. He is a Professor of Music and the

Director of Music Education at The Hartt School of

the University of Hartford and is a past President of

the Organization of American Kodály Educators.

Dr. Feierabend promotes music education through

frequent presentations in the United States and

abroad. He is the author of more than 70 books,

recordings, and DVDs, many of which served as the

inspiration for the award winning PBS children’s

television series Lomax: The Hound of Music.

UNLOCKING LEARNING

MODALITIES: KEYS TO

ACTIVE MUSIC MAKING IN

GRADES K-5

Do you find yourself challenged to

address the various learning styles

of your music students? In this

workshop participants will explore

repertoire and activities appropriate

for aural, kinesthetic, oral, and visual learners. Activities

that cultivate skills in part work, sight singing,

improvising, instrument playing, and listening will be

presented. Attendees will sing, dance, play, and learn

how to integrate these purposeful and practical activities

into a sequential elementary music curriculum.

Dr. Leigh Ann Garner teaches elementary classroom

music at Christa McAuliffe Elementary School in

Hastings, MN. In addition, she is the Director of the

Kodály Institute at the University of St. Thomas, where

she teaches Levels I and II pedagogy. Garner also taught

on the Kodály faculty at Wichita State University.

She is the co-author of Music and Movement, a

music curriculum for children ages 1-5, and is a

contributing author for MacMillan McGraw/Hill music

textbook series. Dr. Garner served on the board of

the Organization of American Kodály Educators from

2004-2012.
