President’s Message
For many DDC members, the
summer months were easy, vacation filled
days of riding, relaxing and having fun in
the sun. For others it was a time to focus on
training for the fall championships. For the
Club’s board of directors, Summer was a
time of discussing plans, implementing
plans, and seeing the fruit of our labor.
The Yellow Rose Festival and
Extravaganza were very successful. The
show was over-subscribed with plenty of
entries to fill the two days and four rings
with rides. The weeks leading up to the
show were hectic and “scary” for the
Competition Management Team – also known as the Dallas Dressage Club
(and board of directors). While entries, sponsorships and advertising were
going well, volunteer solicitation was not.
Although some key spots filled quickly and early (scorers) and some of
the “old reliables” were first on the list for their favorite jobs and time-slots,
many positions went unfilled, even at the very end. The Club AGAIN had to
pay for labor to set up arenas Friday morning. No one offerred to stay to tear
down the arenas, so that chore was unceremoniously dumped on whichever
board members remained on the show grounds at 4pm Sunday. I am so very
thankful for all those who did volunteer (detailed list later in newsletter), to
those barns who pinned up my volunteer solicitation poster, and especially to
Suellen Hogue who called member after member seeking help. [She
despaired at one point – making over 50 calls without a single call back!]
I hear periodically from current and past members of DDC, wondering
if the club could host a certain type of event, or sponsor a certain clinician, or
offer more activities and schooling shows. This club has some great leaders
with wonderful ideas and great energy to implement them, but the Club will
BURN OUT another group of Directors if more of the members do not step
forward to help. I’ve admonished the board not to jeopardize their jobs, their
family relationships or their riding by doing DDC work. So help from the
membership at large is critical for things to get done…. Helping with a club
activity may entail a few or many hours of your time; the amount of time
depends on you, your skills, your availability, and your interest. I hope every
member will consider helping in the effort to ensure DDC remains an active
GMO – We can only DO MORE IN 2004 if you help to MAKE IT
HAPPEN.
On a lighter note, Good luck to all those who qualified for the Great
American/USDF Region 9 championships as well as the SWDC
championships. For those of you who are staying home this
October, let’s enjoy this wonderful fall weather and consider dragging out the
winter riding gear – yes the COLD riding days ARE ahead of us. Good
Riding!
Frances
DDC Member’s Corner
“Let’s Do More In 2004”
DDC’s hardworking membership chair, Susan Brownlee, is already
receiving new memberships and renewals for next year – 2004. I’m not
sure that USDF will recover from her asking “How early can I send in
2004 membership data?” (visualize their office staffer fainting!)
2004 membership sign-up has started – and because there’s a DUES
INCREASE – Susan can only accept a 2004 membership form for next
year – please do not send in checks with 2003 forms – they are obsolete
for next year. If you wonder why the dues increase, please check
September 2003 Transitions, Member’s Corner, for a detailed
explanation (but, in short – USDF raised rates).
If you have a friend that would like to join DDC before January 1 st , give
them a 2004 form. They’ll get the rest of 2003 free (DDC membership
only). Their USDF GMO membership will be for 2004. There’s still
time to qualify for year end awards….
Welcome the latest New Members: Susannah Cord, Ayden Uhlir
And the first 2004 renewals: Chris Wycoff, Shelly Vaughn, Roxanne
Rabun, Gail Pace, Anne Essig, Victoria Bennett, Sara Alvis
Year End Awards… Where do You Stand?
DDC’s award year is coming to an end – only three months to
get those rides in and submit your scores to the Awards Chair –
Who?
Pauline Jaroszewicz
3235 Summerfield Drive
Grapevine, TX 76051
All you need to know about the awards program for 2003 is at the
Club’s website – www.dallasdressage.org … but we’ll be extracting
portions of the program guidelines for the next few months. Extract 1 is
below:
o The DDC Award year is December 1st through November 30th.
The deadline for submitting scores to the awards chair is
December 31 st of the award year. [for example – award
year runs December 01, 2002 through November 30 th , 2003.
Scores must reach award chair by December 31 st , 2003]
o Eligible scores must be 50% or higher and received at USA
Equestrian recognized dressage shows or unrated dressage
schooling shows. Scores must also be from a DDC judges’
program graduate, USDF L program graduate or USA
Equestrian rated dressage judge.
o Scores must be from current USDF, USA Equestrian or F.E.I.
dressage tests.
o Only one score may be counted per ride. For rides that have
2 or more judges (i.e. FEI or championship classes), only the
average (show) score may be submitted.
o Riders are responsible for submitting scores using the front of
the test score sheet to Dallas Dressage Club awards chair by
the deadline listed in para 1.1. The front of the test score
sheet must be legible for the score to count. If the score is from
a USA Equestrian recognized dressage show not listed in the
Region 9 Omnibus or a non-DDC schooling show, the rider must
also submit a copy of the prize list page with show name, USA
Equestrian/USDF recognition numbers if applicable, show
secretary’s name and judges along with the test score sheet.
Down Center Line
A-----X (whew!)
Many of our members rode down the center
line at the Yellow Rose Festival, Silver Hill
(Austin) and Cedar Trace (College Station) in
September. Fall has officially arrived and the
days are getting busier as they grow shorter.
I guess with all the clinics, shows, training,
championships, etc, everyone is too busy to
submit articles, advertisements, and other tidbits
for the newsletter.
Thus, this month’s newsletter is very, very,
very light on content. I hope you will consider
putting pen to paper to write an article about
the Walter Zettl clinic, the Jane Savoie Clinic,
or the Dr Ritter clinic, which are happening in
our area… Or maybe you had a breakthrough
in a recent lesson?
I will pass along the news that our
Wonderful Webmaster – Cathy Curtiss – is so
busy with work that she has little/no time for
keeping the website up-to-date. If you are
web-savvy, and are interested in helping her,
email webmaster@dallasdressage.org, to
coordinate. She and the club will appreciate
it.
By the way, we do not have an official
stable chat section in this month’s newsletter,
but Cathy and her husband bought land
recently and will be moving home and horse
to the East side of town in the next year.
From those of us in the vicinity of Rockwall –
Welcome to the neighborhood!
The Sitting Trot
Copyright © Sue Morris 1998-2003. Reprinted with permission. For more
information on the author, please visit h er website www.classicaldressage.co.uk
You cannot learn to sit the trot on a horse who is
not offering his back for you to sit on!
Neither will you learn by a war of attrition –trotting
endlessly without stirrups as “it’s the only way to get a
good seat”. The horse must be carrying himself correctly
for you to be able to sit and you must be carrying yourself
correctly for him to be able to do this in the first place.
When the horse offers his back, sit – but only for as
long as it feels good for both of you. Either of you may
break the cycle; he by starting to drop his back (go hollow)
or you by losing the rhythm of the stride in your seat /hips.
As soon as you feel any deterioration on either part – go
rising until the horse gives you his back again. In the
beginning you may only sit 3 good strides at a time before
you need to rise. Working like this you increase your own
and your horse’s strength, without stiffening or tension
taking over, and pretty soon you’ll be sitting 6, 10, 20
strides!
Learning the sitting trot is one of the hardest things
because you have to discover for yourself the precise
muscular effort that is involved. It isn't a simple case of
relaxing because if you did that you'd just bump to the back
of the saddle.
Most people try to think of sitting down into the
horse. To be able to sit the trot properly you have to let the
horse come up under each individual seat bone and move
the hip up and forward. The other feels as if it goes down /
back. It is this mis-timing of this individual up / down
phase leads to bumping and jarring. When the horse reaches
the top of his up phase you have to consciously think going
back down with the saddle. Waiting for gravity will be too
late! As I say you have to allow this to happen, but at the
same time you have to match the forward motion of the
horse from within yourself.
You have to exert this forward motion with each
stride in a two-time rhythm. The trouble starts when you
forget to go down with the saddle with alternate seatbones.
Trying “to sit still” will end with the inevitable slap up the
backside! You need flexible muscles around your hips and
lumbar back - the most notorious for being the complete
opposite. You need to be able to contract and relax these
muscles at will. In addition you must support your torso
with your midsection muscles so that you are sitting
balanced over your seat bones with your hips (joints) under
your shoulders. Only from this classical alignment, with
11
your vertebrae in neutral spine can your body absorb the
motion correctly through the hips and spine.
Those riders who nod their heads with every stride
are usually guilty of sitting on the back of their seat, with
raised knees and locked hip joints. The “shock” is not
absorbed and comes out at the extremities in the form of the
unsightly nod and/or wobbling hands and belly dancing
tummies.
Think of your torso making a capital "D" not the
awful reverse "C" that is the norm. Your back is the back of
the D (don't stiffen though) and your frontline pushes softly
forwards to make the round front. The "C" shape you so
often see is the result of riders trying to absorb the
movement with a collapse inwards - ugly and ineffective.
If you are someone who “bumps” in sitting trot and
canter, you may, inadvertently have been using your hands
to keep yourself “with” the horse. This is one of those
phrases to throw away. To me this implies that the horse is
in charge and you follow him. Think much more of leading
the horse from your centre – not that you want to get ahead
of him –you want to synchronise your movement so that
you are together.
The same principles apply in canter. Give your hip
joints to the horse; let him move them. There is absolutely
no need to push, shove, grind or drive in any way. The
movement of the horse will do all the necessary opening
and closing of the joints and move your pelvis. If you try to
“sit still” you will block his hind legs from coming through.
Your upper body stays softly upright ( no rowing motion of
the shoulders ) maintaining the capital 'D' effect.
It may help you to think of sitting up tall-tallertallest,
as the movement of the canter stride pushes your
seat forward. This will involve engaging those midsection
/pelvic /lumbar muscles again, within the rhythm of the
stride, to stabilise your torso whilst allowing your pelvis
and hips to synchronise to the horse.
A superb analogy for canter and sitting trot is to
think of what happens when you bounce a ball against the
ground with your hand. As it comes up from the ground
you raise your hand with it until it reaches the top of its rise
and only then do you begin to push it back down again.
Meeting it as it's still coming up causes a "bump".

"Getaway Clinics" Provide Great Learning Opportunity
The most recent "getaway clinics" held at Southern Comfort Farm offered participants a chance to bring their horses
to a new facility to experience instruction in an indoor arena with mirrors, applause and lots of laughter. Lessons are
taught by Joan Myrthue, a trainer with 35 years riding and international competition experience both in Denmark, and
in the U.S.A.
Joan instructs truly classical dressage, utilizing gymnastic exercises to develop correct muscling resulting in the
horse's ability to work correctly, back to front. When this is confirmed, the horse seeks the bit which is received by
soft and suppling hands allowing a very free moving and lovely picture with the head held in the correct "on the
vertical" position.
Joan Myrthue lounging on Sunshine during a break
between lessons.
Congratulations, Lindsay! We are all enjoying Lindsay's progress and
look forward to many successes for this young rider. We think her pretty
smile says it all.
We appreciate all riders who participated; Felicia Abbott, Sue Egner,
Molly Gengenbach, Patricia Goss, Carrie Griffin, Sharon Groom, Lindsay
and Perri Guthrie, Julie Haynes, Sara Craig, Sandy Holcomb, Frances
Luse, Pat Terrell and Kathy Wolter. We look forward to seeing all of you
again next month.
"Getaway" clinics are offered monthly, usually the mid-month weekend. The
fee of $115.00 includes two private lessons, one on Saturday and one on
Sunday, overnight stabling, (if available), the trailer-in fee and an opportunity to
utilize the adjoining 2,000 acres for trail riding if you wish. The normal fee for
the above would be $165.00. These clinics are being offered at the current
price for the rest of 2003 only.
We invite riders from novice to FEI who wish to further their dressage training
in a relaxing, positive reinforcement style of instruction, to join us.
Participants had a good chuckle recently when Sue Egner
brought her beautiful Clydesdale mare, "Sunshine".
Sunshine delighted everyone with her incredible trot and
canter work and definitely with her willingness to act as a
chaise lounge so we could get some silly photos while she
truly enjoyed being the center of attention. Sunshine was
quite the hit and we hope Sue will bring her back so we
may all love on her some more. What a sweet girl and
truly the gentle giant! Sue normally rides her Clyde-cross,
"Sky", who is coming back from a hoof problem.
Lindsay Guthrie, age 12, daughter of Perri Guthrie, was
our little star this past weekend, while during only her
eighth ride on "Andrew", she figured out how to drive and
maintain a soft hand to bring Andrew into the proper frame
and hold him there during all trot and canter work.
NATIONALLY
FROM THE REGION 9 DIRECTOR – KAT KYLE
The deadline to send in registration to the USDF super week is fast
approaching. There are more options for registration than in the
past as well as many more educational events offered. The
September issue of the “USDF Connections” has a complete listing
of events and registration packages. These can be found on the
USDF web site as well.
This year as you all know the USDF Annual Meeting is in Dallas.
That’s us folks. In order to put on the convention a great number
of volunteers are needed. That is where we in Region 9 can be a
big help. You are welcome to contact me and I’ll refer you to the
correct person to sign up as a volunteer. There may be perks for
this. Also watch the Region 9 web site for more information on
this.
REGIONALLY
Most of the Omnibus ’04 deadline will have passed by the time
you receive this. I just want to thank everyone who has worked
hard to help me get all the information – Sally Chionsini that did
the rules pages as well as the T. D’s, Joan Darnell who did the
judges, Marie Morgan who did the instructor/trainers, Laura
Freemen who did the competition pages, Barbara Lewis who did
the Breeders listings and all of our advertisers. Without each of
these people we could not have the Omnibus or the income from it
that supports so many things we do in the region.
Region 9 will have a boot hat the USDF convention. We will be
selling the “official” convention t-shirts. But we need volunteers to
man this booth the entire time the trade fair is open. The income
form this endeavor will go into the general fund for region 9 and
be used in the future to fund regional projects. Please contact me to
volunteer. Also watch the region 9 web site for more information
on this.
Information and the prize list for the Region 9 USDF/GAIC
Championships can be found at the HDS website.
Junior Riders learn from Young Role Models
On September 6 th , 2003, seven select DDC juniors
received lessons for two of the Club’s advanced young
riders. Andreanna Stucker and Chelsea Braman provided
tag-team instruction and a lunch time theory session to
Lindsey Guthrie, Jaclyn Glaeser, Lauren Yew, Bailee
Harris, Ayden Uhlir, Emily Craig and Caroline Wright
Both students and instructors learned much. Andreanna
mentioned that it was not necessarily easy to select the
right exercise to help a particular horse/rider team.
Hopefully DDC will be able to host another such clinic,
as was requested by at least two participants, again in
2004.
