DANIELůV SVěT | DANIEL’S WORLD
OFFICIAL SELECTION
veronika Lišková | CZ 2014 | 74 min | DCP
This daring documentary tells the story of a platonic love in which fulfillment would mean more
than just moral failure for everybody. A young writer Daniel was born a homosexual paedophile.
He is in love and he makes it clear even to the parents of the beloved boy. Daniel’s World is
a documentary about a borderline form of love and the human capability of trust and tolerance.
The film’s attempt to break one of the last sexuality-related taboos is not an insight into the
world of sexual predators, child pornography and the abuse of children, but a sensitive
recording of Daniel’s experiment on how to live a “happy life” as a paedophile. This paradox
requires a degree of self-control from Daniel, which is unimaginable for most people.
DIMENSIONS OF DIALOgUE
Jan Švankmajer | Czechoslovakia 1982 | 12 min | 35mm
short Film night of the golden Bears
Dimensions of Dialogue is a darkly funny, but ultimately pessimistic animated film about the
impossibility of true communication. It presents three different abstracted visions of human
communication and interaction, and the various outcomes that can result from such
encounters. Each segment offers a very different visual experience along with its unique
perspective on human relations. Dimensions of Dialogue won 3 major awards in 1983: the
Grand Prix from the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, and the Golden Bear for Best
Short Film, and the C.I.D.A.L.C. Award (Honorable Mention) from the Berlin International Film
Festival. It was also selected by Terry Gilliam as one of the ten best animated films of all time.
LOLA@BERLINALE
Holocaust? Again? That’s the first reaction of the members of the youth theatre company at
Schaubühne Berlin when they hear about their newest project. They shall play the children’s
opera "Brundibár", famous for its being performed at the concentration camp in
Theresienstadt. This is not a highly theoretical history lesson at school, and so they are thrown
into the maelstrom of history when they travel to Theresienstadt to learn about the terrors of
the Third Reich and the place where "Brundibár" played such a crucial role. The group is
accompagnied by Greta Klingsberg, a charismatic old lady from Israel and one of the few
survivors of the original cast of "Brundibár". She takes the youngsters on a trip back in time
and slowly, they start questioning their lazy attitude towards German history.
Irena Pavlásková | Czech republic 2015 | 133 min | DCP
The story is freely inspired by the life and work of Jan Saudek, well known Czech photographer,
who has significantly influenced the development of the world photography. He has exhibited and
sold his work in the largest galleries and art houses, he has earned international recognition and
awards, he enjoys great popularity and interest – he is a true phenomenon. He has never sold
himself out, never given up his vision, but has remained himself. In flashbacks, we briefly dive
into some of the basic stages of his turbulent life: memories of the war and the trauma from the
Nazi child refugee camps, bans on his work and persecution by the communist secret police, the
failures of his marriages, etc. The entire story is framed by his meeting a young woman who
would become his femme fatale, though not in the good sense of the word.
