If you have a concern about
something at work or feel that
your employer has violated the
Collective Agreement, talk to
your Steward.
You have the RIGHT to file a
grievance. You can also ask for
help from your Union Rep.
Once a grievance is filed, the
Union will assist you in resolving
the grievance.
If it cannot be resolved, the
Union may decide to proceed to
Arbitration.
Unionized workers are covered
by a Collective Agreement (CA).
The CA sets out conditions of
work such as hours, rates of
pay, vacation, etc.
Talk to your Union Steward or
Union Representative to get a
copy of your CA.
Your workplace Union bulletin
board should list your
Steward(s) and Rep. You can
also call the Union office to find
out who your Rep is and how to
contact them.
INJURIES IN THE WORKPLACE
HEALTH & SAFETY PROTECTION
Most workplaces in Ontario are
insured by the Workplace Safety
& Insurance Board (WSIB). If you
are injured in the workplace you
have the right to file a claim with
the WSIB.
If you are injured at work, report
it to your supervisor or employer
immediately. Identify any witnesses
to your accident/injury.
Seek outside medical attention
immediately and tell the doctor
that it happened at work.
Your employer and doctor are
required by law to report your injury
to the WSIB. Get copies of all
forms or information you receive
or that are sent on your behalf.
Your employer is required to pay
you your full day’s wages for the
day of the accident/injury and to
provide transportation, should
you require it, for that day to
receive medical attention.
If the WSIB allows your claim,
you may be entitled to income
replacement, physiotherapy treatments
and prescription drugs,
etc.
All workplaces in Ontario must
comply with the Occupational
Health & Safety Act (OHSA).
Workers have the right to know
about any potential hazards in the
workplace. Workers must receive
appropriate training and information
on machinery, equipment,
working conditions, processes and
hazardous substances.
Workers have the right to participate
in identifying and resolving
health and safety concerns
in the workplace by appointing a
health and safety representative
and/or committee.
Workers have the right to refuse
unsafe work. You can refuse
work that you believe is dangerous
to yourself or others. Tell
your supervisor or employer your
concerns and why you believe the
work is dangerous.
Once a work refusal is made, the
Occupational Health & Safety Act
must be followed to resolve the
situation. Your Health & Safety
Rep or committee member knows
these steps. Contact them immediately
upon refusal of the work.
OHSA protects you from being
punished by the employer for
refusing unsafe work.
