School holiday excitement, key
players missing, only one win from
the past six games, and an away
game against our arch rivals made
for a daunting proposition on
Sunday, but the Bloods Under 11s
weren’t about to let the odds get in
the way when they came up against
Kew.
Before the game coach Owen
Humphris urged his troops to unite
and give everything they had for
four quarters and the result would
come. Despite a fierce assault by
the home team in the first five minutes
when they stormed forward
time after time, the Bloods’ diehard
defence led by the likes of Josh Luttick,
Noah Kendal, Tynon Kontos
and Harry Brown stood firm with
ruckman Dylan Smith working hard
defensively, and only conceded one
goal and went into the quarter time
break seven points down.
Then the floodgates opened as the
Bloods machine clicked into top
gear. Lewis Downie and Bailey Trevorrow
were in everything gathering
hard-get possessions at will, while
Finn Swedosh started creating opportunities
for the onballers and
Austin Humphris was generating
lots of run and hit the packs hard.
Warrandyte stunned their opponents
and slammed three goals on
the board and suddenly had taken
control of the game to lead by 14
points at half time.
The atmosphere was electric in the
rooms at half-time and the players,
and their family and friends, knew
the Bloods were well and truly “on”
by the looks on their faces and the
positive talk in the rooms. And that
mood transitioned back onto the
field when Billy Podmore continued
to take strong contested marks
at centre half forward and feed his
teammates deep into the forwardline,
as his co-captian Marcus Green
provided blistering pace and poise
under pressure, as did speedster
Lachie Pollock, while Lachie Haberfield,
Ethan Ward and Michael Morena
suddenly became invincible with
their attack on the ball, great run
and swift ball movement.
The Bloods kicked away in the second
half and the results was never
in doubt as they stormed to an impressive
24 point victory in one of
their most united, four quarter efforts
to date.
