Foundation Directors serve voluntarily and without remuneration. Directors are appointed by the
Governor In Council. During the year 9 meetings of the Sunshine Coast Health Foundation were held.
To mark our tenth anniversary in July 2008 the
Sunshine Coast Health Foundation committed
to a $1million spend on the needs of the
District.
To celebrate this momentous commitment we held a
lunch for 200 supporters where we reflected on our
work with the community over ten years.
Foundation Patron Rob Brough again gave graciously
of his time to host the event which showcased the
$7million difference made to local health services during
that time.
In the year to follow we spent $381,445 on the
provision and upgrade of equipment, $231,344 on
service support, $49,633 on local research projects and
$89,059 on staff education. The education component
includes $39,120 committed to funding the clinical
component of the Diploma of Nursing Collaborative
Program, “growing our own” assistant nurses to
Enrolled Nurse qualifications.
An additional $213,000 was spent on equipment in July
2009 and will be reflected in the 2009/10 financial year.
Another major milestone this year was our work
with the Reed Charity Foundation on Reed Charity
House beside Nambour Hospital. The impressive
accommodation facility was officially handed over to the
Sunshine Coast Health Foundation on the 21st February
and hosted the first guests on the 6th April.
The Health Foundation is extremely grateful to the
Reed Charity Foundation, the Reed family and the many
contractors and suppliers who donated goods and
services to the $2million building project.
We also thank the Australian Red Cross and their many
volunteers for managing the building for the next four
years.
We’re very grateful for the continued support of local
Rotary Clubs, particularly the Rotary Club of Nambour
for raising $59,424 to furnish the building. The
support of individuals and local business this year raised
$172,273 to prepare the building for guests. $40,000
of this was from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council to
build a ramp to the hospital campus.
Butler McDermott Lawyers donated many hours
to negotiating the management contract with the
Australian Red Cross and finalising building matters.
Chairman’s Report
4 5
Our sincere thanks go to Peter Boyce and Alan Clark for
their generosity and hard work.
Other valued members of our support team include car
park managers Metro Parking and Thornthwaite CT for
providing pro-bono accounting support again this year.
This year marked the end of an alliance parternership
with Heritage Building Society that since June 2002 has
raised $160,500 for local health services. We sincerely
thank Heritage Building Society for their support over
the past seven years.
We look ahead to our new alliance with Westpac who
will also offer local health staff an exclusive banking
arrangement, install an ATM in Nambour and Caloundra
hospitals and work with the Health Foundation on a
mutually beneficial alliance to support Sunshine Coast
families.
One of our most valuable resources is the goodwill
and support of local health staff. They are our greatest
ambassadors being on the frontline of health care
identifying needs and seeing first hand the difference
made by community support. Many nurses and doctors
again this year represented our foundation at fundraising
events and tours of the hospital, speaking on the
benefits of community support to patients of their areas.
I thank them all for their help on top of an already very
full workload. Particular thanks goes to Dr Tom Hurley,
David Johnson, Leanne Stone and Ruth Melville.
Our organisation is nothing without our volunteers.
Volunteers comprise the board of directors and
the impressive committees at work on events like
the Health Foundation Row For Cancer, the Health
Foundation Spring Carnival Gala and the exclusive 300
Club Melbourne Cup Charity Luncheon. Each year
more business and community leaders put up their hand
to act as ambassadors for our organisation.
I am very proud of the Health Foundation’s
achievements over the past eleven years thanks to my
fellow board members, the hard working team of Lisa
Rowe, Lisa Robbie and Julie Oliver and the exceptional
Coast community that continues to generously support
our work.
Thank you,
Mike Kelly
Chairman
Board Sub-Committee Reports
In 2008 the University of the Sunshine Coast
produced a research report on the Sunshine Coast
Health Foundation (SCHF), in order to gauge the
level of awareness of the Foundation’s brand in the
community.
Fundamental elements of the research included;
establishing the distinct characteristics of the
organisation’s primary target markets, determining
the correct and most effective qualities of the
message to be communicated to consumers and
identification of appropriate avenues for promotion
of the message.
Questionnaires and a focus group were used to
gather data from two separate samples to ensure
set research objectives were met. Community
members across the Sunshine Coast were
surveyed in order to determine the level of
awareness of the SCHF across the region and gain
insight into elements they believed had the greatest
impact on increasing awareness levels.
Focus group attendees provided thoughts
on prevalent attitudes regarding consumer’s
propensity to donate and opportunities the
Foundation could capitalise on in order to
strengthen their brand and proliferate donations.
Statistical analyses were carried out on the collated
data; the following was concluded:
• 78.4% of local Sunshine Coast residents do
not recognise the Sunshine Coast Health
Foundation brand
78% of respondents recognised
at least one SCHF event
such as the annual Health
Foundation Row for Cancer
Marketing Committee
• It was determined that SCHF events have
a relatively high level of recognition on the
Sunshine Coast, with 78% of respondent’s
recognising at least one event
• The majority of respondents deemed the
SCHF brand name to be too long, however
30% of consumers believed the SCHF
slogan ‘Let’s Make it Better’ was ‘somewhat
appealing’
• It was found that television, radio advertising
and news stories, fundraising events and
television appeals were the mediums that
contributed the most to increasing brand
awareness of a charity
• The television commercial implemented by the
Foundation in order to build awareness did not
effectively reach its target audience
• The appropriate target market for the SCHF to
concentrate on reaching is the 55+ age group
This year saw a change in the way we look at the
Health Foundation as a whole. The marketing
committee focused on re branding the Health
Foundation and benchmarking against other highly
successful charities.
The re branding structure is currently underway
and we should be launching within the next six
months. We are working closely with Harris and
Harris to achieve this.
Finance & Governance Committee Report
With the Health Foundation’s current lease on the
Nambour Hospital carpark ending in December
2010 options for alternative revenue streams were
a focus of this sub-committee early in the year.
Options to be further investigated include possibly
tendering for the hospital television contract up for
renewal in September 2010.
Further ahead are avenues for support in the new
Sunshine Coast University Hospital now scheduled
for completion in 2016.
Another focus has been on expanding our
organisation’s corporate alliance base.
The committee endorsed Westpac’s proposal
for a three year alliance agreement based on the
following:
Westpac demonstrated a keen interest in the
Foundation’s business being the only bank other
than current alliance partner Heritage Building
Society that met the initial deadline, one week
prior to the rest.
Research Committee Report
$49,633 for local research projects was approved
by the Health Foundation this year from the
$150,000 committed to the following areas:
1. Pilot Studies - $5,000.00 per grant, 3 grants
available
2. Implementation Studies - $5,000.00 per grant, 2
grants available.
3. Randomised Control Trials or Well Designed
Qualitative Studies – total of $45,000.00, 3 grants
available (eg in amounts of $10,000.00, $15,000.00
or $20,000.00)
4. Dissemination Studies – total of $60,000.00, 1
grant available ($30,000.00 per year for a period of
two (2) years)
A research committee was devised made up of
representatives from the Sunshine Coast Health
Foundation, Sunshine Coast & Wide Bay Health
Service and academic representatives from the
Tertiary partners. The Research Committee
convenes and assesses the applications against
the criteria for each category and the availability
of grant funds. When all assessments are
completed the Research Committee will forward
to the Sunshine Coast Health Foundation the
recommended research projects to be funded.
Vitally important to the success of future alliances
is the acquisition of a more suitable database,
approved by the committee in March 2009.
At the end of the financial year a number of
Works In Progress include the establishment of
a sinking fund for Reed Charity House and the
implementation of an internal audit programme.
Projects funded this year included $19,968
towards investigating the social factors that will
help prevent women from going back to smoking
after pregnancy, $19,629 for an evaluation
of the Newborn and Family Drop In Service,
$5,000 towards a multi-component intervention
supporting caregivers of persons with dementia,
and $5,036 on a study to determine the research
priorities in the SCWBD Mental Health Service.
In four rounds the Project Committee oversaw
the spend of $1million on the needs of the Health
District through it’s new funding application
process.
The committee initially allocated $600,000 to
equipment purchases and upgrades, $150,000
to service support, $150,000 to research and
$100,000 to staff training.
The board’s Forward Focus for the year was on
Smoking, Nutrition, Alcohol and Physical Activity
which meant the board looked favourably on
funding initiatives that worked on keeping people
out of hospital through healthy living.
Essential to the success of the process is the
generation of publicity surrounding the equipment
bought and services enhanced by the funding.
Through reports provided by areas receiving
funding the marketing committee are able to
generate good news stories that promote the
benefits of initiatives such as Workplace Giving,
alliance partnerships and sponsorship of events.
Project Committee Report
Work continues with a range of Non Government
Organisations and mental health workers and
stakeholders on establishing a Mental Health and
Wellbeing Centre.
Modelled on the Sunshine Coast’s Bloomhill
Cancer Support Centre the facility will act as a
portal to all mental health services on the Sunshine
Coast, offering an accessible and more efficient
avenue for support to those experiencing mental
illness.
The Health Foundation will consider the level of
capital commitment to the project in the coming
months.
The Project Committee looks forward to a new
Forward Focus for 2010, Health Ageing and to
distributing a further $1 million into the regional
health community.
