A Perfectly Timed White Lie
Larry was supposed to bake a cake for the Maugus Club Martial Arts fund raising bake sale but forgot to
do it until the last minute. The cake was important to Larry because he wanted so badly to make a good
impression with the Head Instructor. So, being as inventive off court as on, he looked around the house for
a way to fashion a quick substitute.
Larry found it in the bathroom—a roll of toilet paper. He plunked it into a dish and covered it with icing. He
even placed a badminton bird on top, and a squash ball on top of that and iced them them in different colors,
for a beautiful sphere-on-cone-on-cylinder effect, symbolizing the deep, intertwined symmetries inherent in
Tai Chi movements.
Before he left the house to drop the cake off at the Club and head for work, Larry woke his daughter, gave
her some money, and instructed her to be at the bake sale the moment it opened to buy the cake and bring
it home. But when Larry’s daughter arrived at the sale, she found the beautiful cake had already been sold.
When Larry heard the news, he was horrified—everyone would know!
