MAXX 900
Belt merger
A BRAND NEW WAY TO MERGE HAY
MERGE MAXX 900
,
A BELT MERGER CAN HELP YOU IF…
...You Have High Value Forage Crops:
The nutritional value of crops such as alfalfa is in the leaf.
Therefore, it is critical that the harvesting operation is gentle
enough that the leaves are not damaged or left in the field.
The pickups of a belt merger gently gather the crop and transfer
it to the belt keeping the leaves and stems intact.
2
...You Want to Increase Efficiency and Output:
Because the KUHN MERGE MAXX 900 can deliver a windrow to either the left, right or center, large quantities of crop can be
put into a single windrow. The forage harvesting machinery is then working at a higher capacity, and with fewer windrows on
the field, less time is wasted on headland turns and less ground is compacted by forage wagons.
www.kuhn.com
...You want to Improve Silage Quality:
By preventing soil from being collected in the windrow, the risk of introducing harmful bacteria to the silage is greatly reduced.
High levels of bacterial activity from some species during the ensiling process results in silage that is unpalatable and that will
not keep beyond a few months.
3
...You Work on Rocky Land:
Rocks in the windrow will be collected by harvesting
machinery and increase the wear on their components.
The pickups of a belt merger greatly
reduce the number of rocks in the windrow.
MERGE MAXX 900
WINDROW FORMATION
An uneven windrow prevents the forage harvester from travelling at a constant speed. As it reaches a dense
area, the operator must slow down, whereas in lighter areas the operator speeds up to keep the drum full.
Constantly changing forward speed results in a lower average speed than if a constant speed is maintained.
It also presents a greater challenge for the truck or trailer driver, who is trying to match the harvester speed
to collect all the crop.
4
A well-formed windrow does not
contain knots or ropes of crop and
is of even density along its length.
The poorly made windrow from a
competitive machine looks lumpy
and uneven. A forage harvester
will not be able to follow this windrow
at a constant speed!
www.kuhn.com
To ensure a windrow of even
density and to prevent ropes of
crop from being formed, the
MERGE MAXX 900 features a
patented crop guiding system.
The windguard guides the crop
from the pickup onto the belt. This
ensures that material is delivered
onto the belt in line with where it
was collected from the field and
is not blown along the length of
the machine, or “bulldozed“ and
rolled by the pickups.
Effects of an uneven windrow
on the forage harvester:
• Increased wear on the feed roll system
• Uneven chop length
• False tripping of the metal detection system

Only the KUHN patented Windguard System
can ensure an even windrow in all conditions

TOP FEATURES AND BENEFITS
A
Tie Rod-Controlled,
Rear-Wheel Steering:
The rear wheels are connected to the pivoting headstock with a tie rod
system. This causes the machine to accurately follow the tractor, making it
extremely maneuverable in field corners and tight gateways, and increases
the stability when working on slopes.

Skid Shoes:
The pickup heads are each supported on
two massive skid shoes giving the
Merge Maxx 900 a big footprint on
the ground and ensuring that its weight
is spread over a large area. This
minimizes any risk of damaging the field
surface in soft conditions and, in hard
conditions, ensures that the shock load
on the machine is reduced as much as
possible. The skid shoes are bevelled on
all sides to make sure that no matter
which direction the machine is turning,
there is never a sharp edge to dig into
the field.

D
Self Contained Hydraulic Drive:
Belts and pickups are driven using the on-board hydraulic pumps
with hydraulic oil from a 53 gal (200 l) reservoir. This large
capacity ensures that cool oil is always being circulated through the
system while the massive reservoir surface area and specifically
designed system provide excellent cooling in even the hottest
conditions without the need for a radiator.

C
Windrow Guards:
The patented KUHN Windguard System ensures that crop
is collected from the pickup, guided rearwards and placed
on the belt in a consistent manner. As long as crop flow
onto the belt is consistent, the flow of crop off the belt will
be consistent and will result in a uniform windrow.

Ultimate Control:
Folding and unfolding, selection of delivery mode and
control of pickup working height are all carried out
from the comfort of the tractor cab using the onboard
T15M control box. The onboard computer also
monitors the state of the electronic system and the oil
pressure to immediately alert you to any problems.

When working in very heavy crop, attempting to form a single windrow containing 30' (9m) of material can result in
an irregular windrow. In these circumstances the Merge Maxx 900 can be set up to create two windrows using all
three belts. The side belts will both rotate to the outside and the direction of the center belt is selected to allow 2/3 of
the crop to be placed in one windrow and 1/3 in the other.

Sometimes it is useful to be able to move swaths or windrows around the field, either to invert them and promote additional
drying or to gather more grass together for the forage harvesting machinery. Using the Merge Maxx 900, the central unit
can be lifted out of work and the side belts rotated outwards (6) or to the left or right (7 & 8) to provide maximum
versatility and allow crop to be placed exactly where it is needed to maximise the efficiency of the harvesting operation.
With 8 different delivery modes, only the KUHN
MERGE MAXX 900 can provide such versatility

TESTIMONIALS
But why take our word for it?
Here’s what some of our customers say
Punto Verde at Migliaro, Italy, is an organic farm covering 7500 acres, of which alfalfa and
grass is grown on 6200 acres.
“For large scale operations such as ours, it is of paramount importance that we achieve high work rates. The MERGE MAXX
900 allows us to harvest the alfalfa constantly throughout the day without compromising its quality and therefore allowing us to
efficiently organize our work load.
The MERGE MAXX 900 makes fluffy swaths which allow a good passage of air to facilitate drying. Additionally with the MERGE
MAXX 900 we can easily turn over the swaths following rain while still preserving the quality of the crop as much as possible.
Due to the large working width and increased forward speeds, the MERGE MAXX 900 allows us to reduce our operating and
production costs in comparison to a rotary rake.”
Punto Verde, Migliaro, Italy
Witt Farms in Monticello, Wisconsin, operated the Merge Maxx 900 for the first time in 2010,
selling their previous 30' (9 m) mergers and buying two KUHN Merge Maxx 900s instead.
They have seen forage harvester output increase by 14% in the first year. Owner Mike Witt
explains:
“The first thing we noticed about the merge Maxx 900 was the significant improvement in the uniformity of the windrow.
A uniform windrow allows the forage harvester to operate with both a faster and steadier ground speed (fewer speed changes).
From watching the machine work, I have seen that this is primarily due to the windguard. Our records show that this year,
forage harvester output has increased some 14% and I attribute this directly to the increased evenness of the windrow. Our
records also show that first-cut crop yield has increased from 4.1 tons/acre in 2009 to 4.4 tons/acre in 2010 which makes it
especially pleasing that we have seen an increase in forage harvester forward speed.”
