Foreword
Welcome to Britain’s Hot Talent 2010/2011: both a collation and a celebration of UK
venture capital. The inaugural edition of this handbook last year highlighted some 100
companies across eight sectors. This year almost 150 venture capital-backed portfolio
companies are included ranging across ten distinct areas of economic activity. This
expansion is a tribute to the diversity and dynamism of venture capital innovation in this
country despite what have been very challenging conditions in the past two years. This
edition also includes additional statistical information about the industry as a whole and
outlines the perhaps surprising geographical spread represented by these companies.
Although venture capital in Britain, as elsewhere, has its clusters, it can be found in
virtually every corner of the United Kingdom.
Almost everyone agrees that the British economy of the future has to be different
to that of the recent past. It will require restructuring to become less dependent on
a hitherto dominant financial services sector and more focused on the industries of
the future, many of which will be located in the high-tech, clean-tech and green-tech
arenas. There can be no coherent strategy for such an economic shift which does not
place venture capital at the heart of that endeavour. This handbook shows what can be
done.
The world of venture capital is ultimately about the power of new ideas. Ideas, however,
require investment if they are to realise their potential. As this document illustrates
there are already numerous examples of initially small ideas which have subsequently,
courtesy of venture capital, become very large, successful and socially valuable
companies. Britain needs more of this sort of innovation. The British Venture Capital
Association (BVCA) and its Venture Capital committee exist to enhance it.
This handbook will also, we hope, have practical applications for the reader. It should
be the source of personally useful information as well as professionally interesting data.
Thomas Edison declared that: “I find out what the world needs, then I proceed to
invent”. It is in the same spirit that we commend Britain’s Hot Talent 2010/2011 to you.
ACAL Energy Limited
Nominated by Enterprise Ventures
ACAL Energy Ltd is a developer of fuel cell systems, modules and consumable
chemicals for a range of uses including stationary, residential and automotive
applications requiring larger than 1 kW of power.
ACAL Energy was founded in August 2004 to research and optimise Dr Andrew
Creeth’s invention for addressing the inherent technical limitations of the cathode
side of membrane based fuel cells. Fuel cells are electrochemical systems that
convert chemical energy to electrical power directly.
The company’s innovative designs will help deliver substantial cost savings in fuel
cell systems and performance improvements in Proton Exchange Membrane that
will accelerate the adoption of PEM Fuel Cell technologies in key markets.
Enterprise Ventures’ RisingStars growth Fund initially invested in September 2004
and has since increased its investment in the company, against a set of investment
milestones. The company recently raised Series A funding and in recent trials has
achieved industry-acknowledged peak power performance levels, and overall
system demonstrations that evidence the credibility of the low cost fuel cells
system potential. Dr Creeth has been working in related fields for more than 20
years and has a strong inventive record with over 20 patents to his name.
AeroThermal Group Limited
Nominated by Bridges Ventures
The AeroThermal group Ltd is a Dorset-based developer of an innovative autoclave-based
steam treatment technology for waste. The team is focused on deploying its knowledge
in autoclave design in the waste treatment sector through its proprietary Advanced
Anaerobic Digestion (AAD) system.
AeroThermal’s AAD system has significant operational and financial benefits over
conventional AD systems. AAD provides significantly increased biogas yields from waste
otherwise destined for landfills. AeroThermal’s AAD system is underpinned by a proprietary
autoclave (like a large pressure cooker) in which high-pressure steam mixes with the
waste feedstock and breaks down the cell structure of the organic fraction of the mixed
waste, thereby increasing the proportion of waste available for anaerobic digestion. This
pre-treatment step results in a homogenised waste stream which undergoes anaerobic
digestion to produce a methane-rich biogas which is then harnessed to generate green
electricity. Waste heat is utilised within the system and the remaining recyclable material is
sterilised and cleaned, enhancing its appeal to the recycling market.
Processing municipal solid waste in AeroThermal’s AAD has significant benefits over
existing AD systems. Traditionally, conventional AD systems are only suitable for treating
food and green wastes which require a separate collection system. AeroThermal’s AAD
system widens the applicability of AD to numerous ‘problem’ waste streams by eliminating
the need for household separation of mixed waste and kitchen waste, thus reducing
pressure on residents and expense for local authorities. In addition, the enhanced biogas
yield of the AAD system improves profitability by increasing the revenue of such a plant.
Marine Current Turbines Ltd
Nominated by CT Investment Partners LLP
Marine Current Turbines Ltd is the first mover in the field of tidal and marine current
turbines. This entirely new technology provides a means to generate electricity
from the huge and sustainable energy resource of flowing currents in the seas and
oceans. The basic principle may seem fairly obvious, namely to install something
rather like a windmill under water, but the practical difficulties of doing this at
sea are formidable. To this end Marine Current Turbines has an unparalleled track
record of developing and scaling up this novel technology, the key “milestones” and
achievements being as follows:- 1. installation of world’s first tidal turbine, a 15kW
“Proof of Concept” system on Loch Linnhe, Scotland in 2004-5 (a project inherited
from the former parent company) 2. installation of world’s first offshore and first
large scale tidal turbine, the 300kW Seaflow system installed 3km nE of Lynmouth,
Devon, England in May 2003 3. installation of world’s first commercial scale tidal
turbine, the 1200kW Seagen system, in Strangford narrows, northern Ireland
in April 2008, which by now has delivered over 2000MWh into the UK national
grid. The company is now working on the world’s first commercial scale project,
a planned array of Seagen type turbines. This progress has been achieved with a
certain amount of government support, initially from the EC but mainly from the
UK government (DECC), however most of the risk and some 75% of the costs have
been borne by VC funds, corporate partners and some private shareholders..
Quantasol
Nominated by Imperial Innovations
Quantasol is developing Concentrated Photovoltaic (CPV) solar cells. CPV solar
power systems can deliver more power per acre and use land more efficiently and
effectively than any other solar technology. QuantaSol’s CPV solar cells enable
system manufacturers to generate more power than ever before from power
installations, delivering cheaper electricity.
QuantaSol is combining the highly reliable technology of multi-junction solar cells,
with the similarly well proven Quantum Well technology from the Telecom industry.
This powerful combination creates third-generation solar energy performance in a
cost effective and highly reliable device.
Quantasol’s technology is based on triple junction solar cells, which split the solar
spectrum into three, allowing each sub-cell to convert the band of the spectrum
to which it is sensitive at the greatest efficiency. Quantasol’s technology builds on
this through the inclusion of quantum wells, which are used to ‘tune’ the sub-cells
to absorb and convert more of the available light, leading to increases in efficiency.
QuantaSol world leading devices are now moving towards volume availability with
average efficiencies exceeding 40%
Quantasol was founded by Imperial Innovations in 2007 to commercialise
technology developed by Professor Keith Barnham at Imperial College London in
Notonthehighstreet.com
Nominated by SPARK Ventures
notonthehighstreet.com is an unique online marketplace that helps small
businesses, whose products are not stocked by big retailers on the high street, reach
a far wider audience than they would usually encounter.
notonthehighstreet.com was established in 2006 by two former small business
owners to fill a gap in the internet shopping market. The founders wanted to create
an umbrella website for thousands of small businesses to sell their high quality,
creative, often personalised products to consumers who are searching to buy
something more creative, original or personalised than usual high-street wares.
The website allows customers to browse over 35,000 products from around 2,000
small businesses, add those they wish to buy to one shopping basket and pay for
these purchases in one simple transaction. Each seller then gets in touch with
customers to confirm dispatch and delivery. The process is simple for customers
and ensures global exposure for small businesses traditionally restricted by
geography.
notonthehighstreet.com raised its first outside money in 2007 from SPARK
Ventures and then more from SPARK and other value added investors. Its sales
have risen by well over 100% a year to over £6m in 2009. In August 2010 the
company sold a stake to Index Ventures and greylock Ventures at a valuation of
about 20 times SPARK’s original investment.
Nomad Payments Limited
Nominated by SPARK Ventures
The company, originally called nomad Software Limited, started as a developer
and supplier of banking payment systems based on traditional magnetic cards
and newer technology such as smart cards. Its product CORTEX commanded a
significant customer base, primarily in Central and Eastern Europe and the Middle
East, and enjoyed a market leadership position in Poland and the Baltic States.
Later, the company repositioned its business, with the benefit of strategic input
from the then Quester investment manager responsible (now SPARK Ventures),
to build on a technical advantage that it had developed in the processing of
transactions for UK debit card and prepaid credit card issuers. The company is now
the leading processor in Europe for pre-paid cards.
It was nomad’s development of a leading position in this area that attracted the
interest of a number of potential acquirers. A trade sale to the U.S. banking and
payments technology company Metavante Technologies, Inc. was successfully
completed in January 2008. The company now trades under the name Metavante
Technologies Limited.
The company was originally backed by the Quester (now SPARK Ventures) funds in
2000 and supported in a series of follow-on rounds in 2001, 2004, 2006 and 2007.
OB 10
Nominated by FF&P Private Equity Limited
OB10’s major focus is to route invoices electronically, taking data from any supplier, in
their preferred format, from whatever their accounting system, and delivering it to any
buyer in their chosen format, whatever their accounting system, completely removing
the need for paper documents or manual processing. This is achieved without the
need for additional software or hardware at either the buyer or supplier’s end, ensuring
maximum participation and minimum change management. In effect, OB10 delivers
the invoice from the supplier’s billing system in to the buyer’s payables system, with
no paper or human intervention. The system processes transactions (not files), has a
hierarchy of rules for checking data compliance at country, buyer and supplier levels,
features a range of alerts and notifications, and creates images of the invoice which can
be digitally signed where country-specific tax legislation requires it eg germany. The
service provides legal compliance in multiple jurisdictions for both domestic and crossborder
transactions in respect of VAT, sales and other taxes, and where appropriate with
other local commercial laws.
Over the most recent 2-3 years, additional services have been added including a range
of Purchase Order services, an Invoice Status Check, which enables a supplier to see
at what stage in the buyer’s payment cycle their invoice resides, plus an Invoice Data
Capture Service which guarantees to a large buyer that they will receive 100% of their
invoices via OB10. The business has grown organically throughout its ten year existence,
and now, having proven its economic model, with a current sales footprint in UK, US,
germany and netherlands, cash breakeven achieved and full profitability imminent,
accelerated expansion through M&A (to increase geographic reach and further expand
an alarm signal from commercial premises via its proprietary devices and signalling
network to an Alarm Receiving Centre (“ARC”), which in turn is responsible for
alerting the authorities and/or key holders where appropriate. CSL’s devices are
“dual path” which meant that they provide signalling to the ARCs via a traditional
telephone line as well as a wireless (gPRS / gSM) network. This dual path
technology, which was invented by CSL, provides far greater security and has led
to CSL’s products being approved and specified by every commercial property
insurer in the UK. CSL generates its revenues by charging ARCs a connection fee
for its devices in addition to annual airtime that is required to monitor, transmit and
receive its data signals. In the last 3 years, CSL has doubled its connections base to
circa 80,000 and is now the UK’s leading supplier of secure signalling intruder alarm
devices for commercial premises.
Durham Mag-Lev Ltd
Nominated by northstar Ventures
Durham Mag-Lev Ltd develops technology to improve aerodynamic testing of
F1 cars. Mag-Lev uses a magnetic levitation system based on high temperature
superconductors in wind tunnel tests rather than physical struts to produce data
which is considerably more accurate due to there being no artificial supports to
disrupt the air flow around the vehicle.
The technology, as well as being used in F1, will also have a use in the road car
sector as aerodynamics become increasingly important due to high oil prices and
concerns over environmental impact. There are no other commercially available
products on the market which utilise the same system as Durham Mag-Lev. The
TestPlant
Nominated by Seraphim Capital
Testplant has developed some unique software that automates the process
for testing other software products. Software testing entails running a series
of diagnostic tests on a new piece of software. These tests are designed to try
and help identify any defects (commonly referred to as ‘bugs’) that might have
erroneously been created during the process of building a new piece of software.
given that software bugs cost the US economy alone up to $60 billion annually,
finding more effective means of testing software is an imperative for the $200
billion global software industry.
By automating important elements of the testing process, Testplant’s technology
provides a solution to some of these issues. Testplant does this by mimicking the
actions of an end user, enabling it to test software through the end user interface.
This is fundamentally different from most forms of software testing, which rely
upon testing the software’s underlying code. To date, only a small proportion
(c.20%) of all software testing is automated. The remainder (c.80%) has to be
tested manually - a slow, laborious and expensive process. Because Testplant tests
software through the user interface, it essentially replicates the actions of someone
doing manual tests. Consequently, for the first time, highly manual elements of the
software testing process can now be automated, reducing the time taken to test
new software products but up to 80%.
PolyTherics is a biotechnology company that applies precision chemistry to
develop protein and peptide-based drugs. Protein and peptide-based drugs are
injected, and stay in the body only a short time, reducing the efficacy of the drugs
and increasing the frequency with which they must be administered. PolyTherics’
technology can extend the duration of action of these classes of drugs, conferring
benefits in terms of increased efficacy and reduced frequency of injections,
reducing the cost of treatment and improving patient compliance. PolyTherics
has developed and patented three innovative approaches to PEglyation, known as
TheraPEg HiPEg and CyPEg. PEgylation is the process by which poly (ethylene
glycol) is attached to any therapeutic peptide or protein to slow its elimination
from the body. PEgylation is an established method for improving medicines,
and nine PEgylated products are already approved for use in either the US and/
or the EU. PolyTherics’ methods of PEgylation add PEg to a specific site on
proteins and peptides producing a more homogeneous product than traditional
PEgylation technologies. The market for therapeutic proteins is expected to grow
to $160bn by 2013. Polytherics works in partnership with biopharmaceutical
Fotech Solutions Ltd.
Nominated by SEP
Fotech Solutions Limited develops monitoring and surveillance solutions for oil and
gas wells and pipelines. They have created a class leading fibre optic acoustic sensor
product, Helios, which detects sounds along the length of a fibre optic cable at
distances of up to 50km.
The high quality data received by Helios shows leaks, fluid movement in and out
of the reservoir, and monitors the safe completion of reservoir activities such as
perforating and fracturing. In the security market, the system’s ability to rapidly
identify the locations of sounds without the need for expensive electronic
components in the field gives it significant advantages over incumbent solutions in
performance, safety, cost and maintenance.
The global market for oilfield sensor systems is well established and growing. As it
continues to develop, there is a growing move to enhance the quantity and quality
of data gathered; all part of a broader trend towards ‘the digital oilfield’. There is also
growing oilfield industry interest in improved asset monitoring and management,
particularly as a result of increasingly ageing assets. The Deepwater Horizon accident
Nexeon
Nominated by Imperial Innovations
nexeon is developing novel silicon anode technology for lithium-ion batteries.
nexeon’s technology is built upon pioneering materials science research at Imperial
College London and the company has made substantial progress over the past
three years.
The energy capacity of current lithium-ion batteries is limited by the use of carbon
anodes. As a result of the increasing demands on energy storage in consumer
electronic and electric vehicle applications, alternative anode materials have been
sought. nexeon’s silicon anode materials have a much higher capacity for lithium
than carbon and as a result have a theoretical limit of almost ten times the energy
capacity per gram.
nexeon boasts a fully operational pilot plant capable of producing its unique
materials at kilogram scale, anode coating facilities, and the ability to fabricate
prototype pouch and cylindrical cells incorporating its materials.
nexeon has an extremely strong IP base which has continued to grow since its
formation. nexeon now has a portfolio consisting of 14 patent families, with more
in preparation.
The potential market for lithium-ion batteries is estimated at $35 billion by 2018.
Novel Polymers
Nominated by Environmental
Technologies Fund
novel Polymers (nPS) was founded in november 2003 in order to exploit polymer
technology invented and developed by UK government research laboratories.
Having established an exclusive licence to the technology, nPS has been working to
apply it to specific applications across many industries.
Initially, the company targeted applications such as adhesion promotion coatings,
electrochemical membranes and solid electrolytes. nPS has since developed its
technology for many other applications. The company works in partnership with
industrial and product companies to develop products and services for new and
existing markets.
Partnerships now exist between nPS and large industrial companies active in many
areas, including paper additives, paint, flooring, automotive, building materials and
carbon industries.
In a very short period of time, the business has gone from being a small research &
development company to a cutting-edge product company with a large number of
applicable markets.
Pyreos
Nominated by Seraphim Capital
Infrared sensors form the basis of several billion dollars markets including motion detectors
used for energy conservation, building automation and security alarms, infrared
cameras that can ‘see in the dark’, gas detectors which are used to detect the presence
of potentially harmful gases such as carbon monoxide, and spectroscopy which
uses infrared sensors to determine the chemical / molecular composition of samples
for - amongst others - the pharmaceuticals, food and beverage and petrochemical
industries. The materials and manufacturing techniques currently used to make infrared
sensors mean there are inherent limitations – both in terms of cost and performance –
that have held back the industry over the past 25 years.
Pyreos’ patented thin film technology addresses these issues by, for the first time, bringing
the benefits of low cost semiconductor manufacturing techniques to the infrared
sensor industry. This enables Pyreos to make sensors at a fraction of the size and cost
than has historically been possible whilst also offering improved performance, functionality
and reliability. By making infrared sensors at 1/100th of the cost and as little as
1/200th of the size of existing sensors, Pyreos’ technology has the potential to disrupt
the industry, creating a paradigmatic shift in the industry’s cost model whilst also opening
up entirely new applications. In this sense, the benefits of Pyreos’ technology for
infrared sensors are comparable to the development of integrated circuits which drove
the electronics / microchip revolution 40 years ago. Pyreos has already established a
presence in markets around the world through leading distributors. The Company has
already signed several multi-million dollar long term customer supply agreements, working
with many of the leading industry players in Europe, America and Asia.
Glysure
Nominated by Amadeus Capital Partners
Founded in 2006, glysure is developing a continuous blood glucose sensor for
patients in intensive care with the goal of reducing patient mortality.
In 2001, work on “tight glycemic control” (“TgC”) established a new standard in
post-surgical care by showing that managing blood glucose levels within tight
normal ranges yielded clear improvements in patient outcomes (including a
46% reduction in incidence of sepsis, a 41 % reduction in renal failure and a 34%
reduction in in-patient mortality).
Maintaining glucose levels within the target range is difficult using current
technologies which require frequent measurements to guard against hypoglycemia
and the risk of adverse outcomes, including death. given the practical limitations
of resource constraints, nursing workloads and current technologies, hospitals have
struggled with the development and implementation of safe and effective TgC
protocols.
glySure is developing a continuous in vivo glucose monitoring system using an
intravascular, optical florescence based sensor to meet the worldwide demand
for implementation of TgC/IIT. The company has demonstrated highly accurate
sensors and prototype systems in vitro and in vivo and is now preparing for clinical
Nominated by SEP
ip.access designs and sells miniature indoor mobile phone stations which are
deployed inside offices (picocells) and homes (femtocells). These are typically
