You Are Here
Daniel Cockburn, 2010, Canada, 78 min, PG13 (Some Coarse Language)
An archivist tries to puzzle out the meaning of her self-created library of found documents. A crowd
called “Alan” tries to figure out the meaning of an inexplicable door. Pedestrians move around an
urban landscape, taking orders from a command centre that controls their movements. A man
locked in a room answers questions in Chinese without comprehending the language. The multiple
narrative threads are structured in a fractal way, each story possessing its own logic that dominates
the way they are combined together. Weaving in and out of one another in a contrapuntal rhythm,
they gradually reveal important shared symbols and events, building toward an understated payoff.
Daniel Cockburn is a Canadian video artist, director and writer whose work combines abstract
investigation with unusual narrative devices, and explore the borders between video art, film essays,
and cinematic fictions.
