4 Essential Ground Rules & 1 CAUTION
Don’t forget these vital elements of a successful When=Then
When-Then Ground Rules
1. The privilege must be something the child truly
_______________________ to motive him to take action.
2. Say the When-Then in your ____________ and
emphasize the “When” and the “Then”.
3. After saying the When-Then, you MUST walk away and
disengage! It sends the message that:
• I’m not going to argue or negotiate about this.
• I have complete faith you’ll get it done.
Walking away also allows your child to _______________
and still do what you asked.
4. Don’t give in!
It’s NOT “IF-THEN”
IF-Then…
• Implies the child has a choice.
• Feels like a bribe.
WHEN-Then conveys full confidence she’ll do what you
asked.
