SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF

LAND AND ENVIRONMENT (SMOLE II)

Sustainable Management of Land and

Environment in Zanzibar (SMOLE) is a

joint technical cooperation project between

Government of Finland and the Revolutionary

Government of Zanzibar. NIRAS Finland Ltd

is the lead consultant.

The Project is being implemented by the

Departments of Lands and Registration,

Department of Urban and Rural Planning

and Department of Surveys and Mapping

under the Ministry of Land, Housing, Water

and Energy.

Other institutions include Department of

Forestry and Non-renewable Natural

Resources under the Ministry of Agriculture

and Natural Resources and Department of

Environment department under the Office of

the First Vice President,

The second phase of project started on

January 1st, 2010 and will end in December

2013.

SMOLE Objectives

The overall objective of SMOLE II is to

reduce absolute poverty in the society

through environmentally sound land management

and socio-economic development.

The specific objective is to ensure that

sustainable land and environmental

management practices are in use to achieve

sustainable development.

The project aims at promoting sustainable

land use by supporting improved land

management practices and improves the

efficiency of the Government administration

in handling land and environmental management,

with the ultimate goal of contributing to

poverty reduction.

SMOLE Components

The two main components of the project are:

Support to Land Management and

Administration and Strengthening

Environmental Management and Renewable

Natural Resources Management. The project

provides technical assistance and initial investment

support for ensuring that sustainable land

and environmental management practices are in

use in Zanzibar.

Main Activities

SMOLE II activities are implemented both in

Unguja and Pemba.

The main activities being implemented are:

1. Public awareness for land and environmen

tal management.

2. Land adjudication and development of land

registration system

3. Development of Zanzibar Land Information

System (ZALIS)

4. Capacity building of Institutions and Staffs

in the departments.

5. Support the updating of the National Land

Use Plan

6. Piloting Natural Resources and Commu

nity Forest Management

7. Support on the preparation of Climate Change

and other sectoral strategies
