Welcome to the 2013 Spring/Summer season. As always, our Recreation staff has been working hard to provide 

programs and events for all to enjoy. Some upcoming community events are: the 24th Annual Community Day, 30th 

Annual Daisy Breakfast, 11th Annual Fine Arts Festival, Memorial Day Observance, Relay for Life event (American 

Cancer Society), Summer Concerts, and Splash Bashes. Thanks to our Recreation staff for their hard work this season 

to bring these programs to you. So, please take this opportunity to review what’s going on in East Brunswick and sign

SPECIAL EVENTS 

24th Annual East Brunswick Community Day 

Sunday - April 7 - 12:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. – East Brunswick Community Arts Center 

Learn more about the community you live in...become involved in local volunteer groups...learn about 

programs available to you and your family. Nonprofit, volunteer groups that benefit Township residents will 

be on hand to recruit members, distribute literature, and demonstrate their talents. FREE admission. 

The Ralph Lamo Memorial Breakfast

30th Annual Daisy Fundraiser - It’s reunion time again! Enjoy the best breakfast in town while you support

Arbor Day Celebration

The Township’s annual Arbor Day Celebration will be held the last week in April. The Township will 

receive its 35th Tree City U.S.A. recognition from the State Forestry Service and the National Arbor Day

Memorial Day Ceremony 

Sunday - May 26 - 1:00 p.m. – E.B. Veterans Monument 

East Brunswick will conduct its annual Memorial Day Observance honoring military veterans from all 

wars and conflicts beginning at 1:00 p.m. with a flag raising and wreath ceremony, and honor guard salute. 

Come out and show your support of our veterans. Music by the E.B.H.S. Brass Choir. Event held outdoors 

rain or shine! 

Relay for Life 

Saturday - June 1 - 12 noon – midnight – Heavenly Farms 

Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back! How far will you go to make a difference in the fight against cancer? 

No matter who you are, there’s a place for you at Relay . . . a fun and unique way for people to raise money 

for the battle against cancer. Teams of families and friends participate in various activities and enjoy a 

perfect combination of exercise, entertainment, and inspiration! To learn how you can start or join a team,

11th Annual Fine Arts Festival & Farmer's Market 

Saturday – June 8 – 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (rain date - June 9) – E.B. Municipal Complex 

East Brunswick’s Annual Fine Arts Festival is an outdoor juried show of fine art and handmade crafts. 

This day long family event is planned to provide artists with a venue to exhibit their work, demonstrate their 

talents, and offer original art and craft items for sale. For more info, see page 19 or call East Brunswick 

Recreation & Parks at 732-390-6797. Added to the day’s event will be a Farmer’s Market in the Municipal 

Court Yard, hosted by the Friends of the EB Environmental Commission. 

Flag Day – Flag Retirement Ceremony 

Friday – June 14 – 7:00 p.m. (rain date - June 15 at noon) – Courtyard at the Municipal Center 

As a tribute to the American Flag and our Veterans, East Brunswick Girl Scouts, Sophia Moccio and 

Karalyn Hoover will conduct a flag retirement ceremony on Flag Day as their Silver Project. Unserviceable 

flags collected will be properly disposed of with a brief ceremony. Please join them as they honor and pay 

tribute to our Flag. 

Note: A Flag Drop is available at the Recycling Center and another will be available at the Municipal 

Complex this Spring.

Philosophy 

For over 50 years, the Township of East Brunswick has been 

providing children with a positive, stimulating and happy summer 

day camp experience where they create wonderful memories and 

lasting friendships. We are focused on making summer a fun-filled 

experience for your child to cherish for a lifetime! 

The Department of Recreation's Summer Day Camp is a co-ed camp 

serving children in grades Kindergarten – 9. The camp provides a 

variety of experiences that support social and physical growth in 

a positive environment in which children have the opportunity to 

explore, play, learn from adult role models, develop self confidence, 

use their imagination, and develop new friendships. The program 

stimulates exploration and adventure through individual and group 

activities while developing insight into cooperation and decision 

making. Amazing trips, sports, arts & crafts, swimming, games and 

creative activities promote an exhilarating summer for each camper. 

Our camp is where camper’s personal, emotional, and physical 

needs are nurtured by staff that has a great love of children. This 

camp will give you the peace of mind that your child is in a caring 

environment this summer. 

Our camp is accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA) 

which recognizes camps for providing quality programming with the 

health and safety of campers and staff in the forefront. Standards 

established by ACA provide guidelines for policies, procedures, and 

practices, as well as education and evaluation to ensure the ongoing 

challenging and nurturing aspects of the program.

Our Funshine Friends program is back by popular demand! The transition to Kindergarten can be a huge change for 

some children and we are here to help prepare your child for that leap into Kindergarten. Your child will learn and 

grow by sharing and exploring new experiences. They will play games, become an artist, go on field trips and much 

more. Campers will learn to share with one another and accept new responsibilities and values, all while having fun.

Super Stars was created for boys and girls entering 4th and 5th grades. Programming for this age group is designed to 

meet the needs of seasoned campers. The Department of Recreation and Parks has recognized the need to provide 

older participants with a wider range of activities and excursions as they progress through our camp program. We 

provide a balanced, structured, and safe summer for all campers. More challenging sports, game room, and arts & 

crafts will offer opportunities to try new, individual, as well as, group orientated activities for ages 9 - 11. Campers will 

be able to show their creativity, practice cooperation, gain self-confidence, make new friends, and most of all...have 

the best summer of their life! Super Stars is a fun way for your child to spend an enjoyable summer; they will look 

forward to camp everyday!

hit the road in search of new adventures. We create a fun atmosphere where your

wonderful memories and lasting friendships. Camp emphasizes personal growth, 

builds self-esteem, and positive team building skills. This camp program provides 

girls and boys with an amazing camp experience! Our dedicated staff is focused on 

making summer a fun filled experience for your child to cherish for a lifetime. This proven, very popular summer activity 

offers time for young people to socialize with old and new friends, travel to great places, and work with a dynamic staff 

that has a genuine interest in being with them. Campers will have the opportunity to learn from adult role models who 

truly care about them. This camp will give you the peace of mind that your child is in a safe and caring environment. 

CHILDREN’S SUMMER THEATER

This program is designed for those children genuinely interested in performing on stage. Other limited activities are 

included to keep children busy when they are not involved in the scene aspects of theater. Depending on their role, they 

will be working with either the Director, the choreographer, music director, or one of the stage managers. One week 

your child may be a villager, the next week a butterfly, and then possibly a featured role. The productions are written 

to provide as many featured roles as possible; however, the program cannot guarantee the ‘lead’ role to every child. 

The Apprentice-in-Training (AIT) program is an opportunity for teens to learn the inner, day-to-day workings involved 

in theater performances. They will also have an opportunity to perform in all productions. Those teens interested in the 

more technical aspect of theater will be able to work on that portion of the production as well.

An Interactive Journey

Food Funtastics 

Have fun in the kitchen, measuring, cutting, and baking 

your own delicious treats. Children learn kitchen safety and 

hygiene while preparing a snack of their very own. Each 

class will try to provide healthy snack options, as well as 

preparing a healthy lunch item. Please bring Tupperware 

to each class to bring home creations. A cookbook will 

be given at the end of the season, which will include all 

recipes made in class.

for East Brunswick Recreation for 

28 years. Bella also taught at the 

YMHA in Highland Park for 22 

years and at her own gymnastics 

school in Brooklyn for six years. 

Absolutely no registrations for this program will be accepted before the 

March 23 tryouts have been held. Registration payment for all qualified participants 

will be accepted at the tryouts; however, payment must be received by the 

Recreation Office no later than April 5 to ensure enrollment in class. Registrations 

and checks received prior to the March 23 tryout date will be returned.

Art Adventures 

Enthusiastic young artists are invited to bring their imaginations and explore 

composition, color, and design while experimenting with a variety of materials 

such as cray-pas, watercolor, collage, paper weaving, and more. As students

East Brunswick Alliance for the 

Prevention of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse 

Established by Township ordinance in 1990, the Alliance is a 15-member 

committee appointed by the Mayor and Township Council committed to a 

community-wide substance abuse prevention effort. With the aid of State 

grant funds, Alliance members plan and implement community prevention and 

educational programs, including healthy recreational activities. 

Project Medicine Drop 

In an effort to help keep excess medications from falling into the hands of 

those who might abuse them, or sell them for abuse, the E.B. Police Dept. in a 

cooperative effort with the N.J. Attorney General’s Office and Div. of Consumer 

Affairs have teamed up for Project Medicine Drop. The Police Dept. has 

installed a lockable metal “prescription drug drop box”, resembling a mailbox, 

in the hallway outside the police department’s front desk. Members of the 

public are invited to dispose of their unused and expired medications.

Fitness Programs 

All fitness programs are open to both men and women. Having a 

partner or friend to work out with is a great incentive for starting 

and maintaining a regular exercise program. Our instructor has a 

style of teaching that is very energetic and motivating, offering a 

great workout in a fun, healthy environment. 

Mat Pilates and Yoga are 16-session programs, Zumba with 

Toning, is a 24-session program, and Intermediate Yoga is an 

8-session program. 

A 16-session program consists of any combination of two (2) 

days per week or a total of 16 sessions within the duration of the 

program. The 8- and 24-session programs consist of attending 

every session for the duration of the program.

Daisy Recreation Program* 

For children and young people with special needs 

A fun and exciting camp designed for children and young adults with special 

needs. A real day camp experience with the addition of extra staff makes the 

perfect blend of fun and structure. 

Join us as we enjoy Crystal Springs slides, lazy river and pools and new for 

this year, one 1/2 hour instructional swim lesson each week! 

In addition, our days are filled with sports, Kinect, games, Zumba, yoga, 

art, outdoor exploration, field day, silly picture day, ice cream sundae parties, 

theatre and more. 

Several trips which may include Camden Aquarium, Liberty Science Center, 

Puppet Theatre, Jumping Jungle, bowling and more are another part of the 

overall camp experience. 

Our enthusiastic staff is under the supervision and direction of experienced 

teachers and professionals in the field. 

PLEASE NOTE - If your child is registered with the Division of Developmental 

Disabilities (DDD) and you wish to have your child funded in part by DDD, 

program registration materials and the required deposit MUST be received at 

the Department of Recreation no later than five days prior to the “cut off” 

date determined by DDD. Your child’s Case Manager should be contacted 

in early January as they can tell you what the DDD “cut off” date is for this 

year. We must first confirm with you that we are able to provide for your child 

and will accept them into the program before DDD will consider providing 

financial assistance. This financial assistance, if available, is reimbursement 

of fees that you will have sent in to register your child. Any arrangement for 

possible fee reimbursement by DDD is between parents and DDD. Parents 

using the Payment Plan Option must send the first third of the fee in with the 

registration materials and then send in the remaining payments as directed. 

Complete registration fees must be received no later than the Thursday 

before the program starts. 

*You must be a current member of The Daisy Association for your 

child or young adult to participate in the Daisy Recreation 

Program, the Tuesday Evening Bowling Program, the Thursdays 

at Daisy Program and the Movement and More Program. 

Membership in The Daisy Association is $25 per year, payable to

A full or partial scholarship, based on financial need, may be available 

for Special Needs Programs. Please contact the Department of Recreation

Team Evaluation and IEP Conference Report. This information is essential to 

plan your child’s participation in our program. If you do not have a clear copy 

of these papers, please request that your child’s school send them to you.

A six week Saturday morning program for children 3 – 6 with special needs, 

encouraging movement and more. This 2 hour program will include structured 

movement, obstacle courses, relays, ball skills, and games as well as art and

An emphasis will be put on social interaction, cooperative and collaborative 

play skills while providing a fun and energetic environment. A wonderful way to 

start your weekend. Requirement: Children need to have some sitting skills. 

Sport Skills – Coming Soon 

Fall Soccer, Winter Basketball 

Seasonal sport skills will be emphasized to help improve your child’s ability 

to play in a team setting. 

Great for children involved in Buddy Ball, those working to possibly join a 

Rec team in the future, as well as those just looking to improve their skills for 

the fun of it. Teamwork, sport skills, as well as social skills will be emphasized.

Friday Nite Live for People with Special Needs 

Friday Nite Live is a recreational, social, and educational program for people 

with special needs. For 22 years, this program has afforded persons who are 

less able to independently travel, the opportunity to participate in a variety of 

community and statewide recreational activities. Our staff provides assistance 

to participants, allowing them to function in an independent and safe manner. 

Spring: Our seven week program will include Bingo, a spring fling dance, movie 

night, Wii night, bowling, and karaoke. 

Summer: A seven week program of fun including Bingo, bowling, a mystery play, 

karaoke, summer jam dance, and EBYACP musical production. 

Previous participants will receive a registration packet in the mail. New

The East Brunswick Historical Society is dedicated to collecting, preserving 

and presenting the social, cultural, and political history of East Brunswick, 

as well as highlighting state and national topics that have had an impact on 

our community. This is in addition to our continuing effort to help preserve 

historically significant buildings and sites that further enrich the history of East 

Brunswick. 

During the forthcoming year, 2013, the Historical Society will concentrate 

on The Power of Creativity as it generates inventions in New Jersey. 

These inventions permeated all aspects of our lives. The exhibits will 

include inventions that made our lives more enjoyable, affordable, 

convenient, safer, and healthier. The Society will feature several programs

TAKE THE PLUNGE THIS SUMMER! 

The 2013 summer season at Crystal Springs Family Aquatic Center will 

begin on Memorial Day weekend and operate on weekends only through 

June 23. Crystal Springs will open seven days a week tentatively on June 24. 

If the public school schedule results in a later closing, Crystal Springs will open 

the following day. 

Crystal Springs is an accessible facility for all patrons to enjoy. The barrierfree 

access meets all regulations as required by the Americans with Disabilities 

Act. The state-of-the-art facility includes seven water amenities: Recreational 

Pool, Lap Pool, Splash Pool, Kiddie Pool, Activity Pool, Lazy River, and Water 

Slides. All patrons taller than 48 inches can enjoy the entire park with the 

exception of the Kiddie Pool. 

We offer our guests a limited number of deck chairs (you may also bring your 

own chairs), life vests, tubes for the Lazy River (no personal flotation devices), 

and picnic areas with tables and grills free of charge. Lockers are available for 

daily rental. The Water’s Edge food concession is also available for snacks and 

lunch fares. Crystal Springs is a smoke-free, alcohol-free, and glass-free facility! 

SEASONAL MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS - Seasonal members will enjoy:

RENTAL AREA – This year we will be offering a rental area at Crystal Springs 

directly adjacent to the Lazy River! Rentals are for the entire day only and 

include a shade structure, picnic tables, charcoal grill and use of a cooler with 

ice. The Member and East Brunswick Resident rate is $200 and includes 5 

FREE daily entrants to the park; Nonresident rate is $500 and includes 10 

FREE daily entrants to the park to be used the day of rental. Anyone else 

in your group entering the park will pay $10 weekday and $13 weekend. A 

minimum group of 20 is required for weekend rental; no minimum for weekday 

rental. Reservation and payment for the Rental Area must be done at least 24 

hours prior to your reservation date; depending on availability. Dates will not 

be held, reservation is only locked when payment is made. 

MILITARY DISCOUNT – All current military, veterans, and their immediate 

family members residing in the same household will receive 50% off all Seasonal 

Memberships upon displaying a valid Military ID. For daily visits, individuals 

displaying a valid Military ID will be given FREE admission to the park. Online 

registration for Military Discounted Memberships are not available at this time.

Sandpiper Swim Team 

Crystal Springs Family Aquatic Center sponsors and hosts the Sandpiper 

Swim Team. The team practices and competes at Crystal Springs and other 

swim clubs in Middlesex, Somerset, and Union counties from mid-June through 

July 31. Swimmers 18 years old and under are welcome. Registrants must 

meet the age requirement as of June 30, 2013. 

The team will be limited to 85 swimmers comprised of five age groups. 

Mandatory team tryouts are held in May. All prospective team members are 

required to have a seasonal membership at Crystal Springs prior to registering. 

Please note: All swimmers age 8 years and under must be able to swim the 

length of the pool (25 yards) continuously and unassisted. It is recommended 

that “8 and unders” have a familiarity with the four competitive strokes: free, 

back, breast, and butterfly. Swimmers 9 years and older must be able to swim 

two lengths of the pool unassisted and be able to demonstrate knowledge of 

the four competitive strokes. United States Swimming rules and regulations are 

used for the summer swim season. 

The competitive swim season is only five weeks long. All swimmers are 

expected to participate in all ten meets and must practice at least three times 

a week to participate in the next meet. Practices are held Monday, Tuesday, 

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in the early morning (8:00-10:00 a.m.) and 

late afternoon (5:30-7:00 p.m.). Meets are held on Saturday mornings and 

Wednesday evenings. Team suits and caps are available at an additional 

cost. All swim meets are administered by the Sandpiper Parents’ Association. 

Parents are required to attend a pre-season meeting to sign up to work a 

minimum of four meets during the season. Job assignments include meet 

officials, timers, and/or recorders. After the competitive swim season has 

ended, all team members under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an 

adult when entering Crystal Springs.

PARK AND BALL FIELD RESERVATION 

East Brunswick Township’s parks, picnic facilities, and ball fields are available by reservation. It is best to reserve a 

park/ball field; if you do not and someone arrives with a permit/reservation, our Park Rangers will ask you to leave. 

Reservations can be made after February 11 for the 2013 spring/summer season. 

BALL FIELDS - Many of East Brunswick’s ball fields are used for league play from September to June; however, when 

the fields are available permits are issued for use to the public. Similarly, the East Brunswick Board of Education’s ball 

fields are scheduled for club, league, and recreation programs; limited public usage is available by permit or on a first 

come, first served basis. 

PARK/PICNIC FACILITIES – East Brunswick has 17 developed parks. Eight (8) of these parks have picnic facilities 

and two (2) are equipped with tables and grills: Bicentennial and Welsh. Permits are issued for the use of these parks 

to groups limited to forty (40) people. Crystal Springs Family Aquatic Center also has picnic facilities available on a first 

come, first served basis during the operating season. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all parks. 

Welsh Park is located at 36 Gordon Street is 

a 26 acre park. Surrounded by several large 

neighborhoods, it is East Brunswick’s oldest park. 

Its amenities include a little league field for youth 

baseball, basketball court, playground, tot lot, 

picnic area with tables and grills and parking. It 

also has some great natural hiking trails as well as 

paved walking paths.

1. PROOF OF RESIDENCY 

Proof of residency is required every time you register 

for a recreation program and must be submitted with 

registration. The following means of verification will be 

accepted: 

• Valid driver’s license 

• Current utility bill in registrant’s name 

• Mortgage payment or apartment lease 

2. RESIDENT AND NONRESIDENT 

Programs are open to East Brunswick residents 

and eligible* residents on a first priority basis and 

nonresidents on a secondary basis. Nonresidents may 

register only after the program’s registration deadline date 

has passed; based on availability. 

Resident - A participant who lives within East Brunswick 

shall pay the resident fee. 

*Eligible Resident - Applies to sports programs only on 

p. 27. 

A participant who: 

•Owns property or a business in East Brunswick. 

• Works for a corporation, company, or business in East 

Brunswick. 

Eligible residents shall pay the nonresident fee. 

Nonresident - A participant who lives outside of East 

Brunswick shall pay the nonresident fee. 

3. LEGAL GUARDIANSHIP 

The Township reserves the right to require additional 

means of proof for any or all registrants when deemed 

necessary. 

4. AGE REQUIREMENTS - 17 YEARS & UNDER 

Participants must be the required age or grade level 

as specified in program descriptions. When registering 

your child for the first time for any program, kindly 

submit a COPY of child’s birth certificate or other legal 

documentation verifying age. 

5. WAIT LISTS 

If the program you register for is full, your name will be placed 

on a Wait List and your check returned to you. Wait Lists are 

a source of contact. You will be contacted ONLY if a space 

becomes available and be given a day by which to pay the 

fee and complete the registration process. If payment is not 

received by the requested date, the opening will be offered 

to the next person on the Wait List.

6. LATE FEES 

Any registration received on or after the start date of a 

program will be assessed a $15 ($25 for Sports Programs 

on p. 27) late fee in addition to the registration fee. 

7. REFUNDS - The Director reserves the right to 

finalize and make all decisions regarding refunds. 

• Refunds WILL be issued if a program is canceled. 

• Any other requests will be considered if a Refund 

Application Form is submitted five (5) business days 

before a program begins AND only if the request 

does not drop the program enrollment below the 

required minimum. 

• A $15 administrative fee ($25 for sports programs on 

p. 27.) will be assessed for each refund granted. 

• All refunds will be issued by Township check and paid 

according to the Finance Department’s bill-paying 

schedule. 

8. CONDUCT AND PARTICIPANT OBLIGATION 

Rules governing the participants in a program have 

been established. Participants who fail to observe the 

rules may be subject to expulsion. A child should never 

be left alone at an activity or program site before the 

person in authority arrives to accept responsibility for 

that participant. It is the obligation of the parent/guardian 

to be keenly aware of the programs’ schedule and times. 

9. PROGRAM CANCELLATION 

If a program is canceled due to insufficient registration, 

participants will be contacted prior to the start of the 

program. If a program is canceled due to inclement 

weather/emergency situations, participants can/will learn 

of a cancellation in one or more of the following ways: 

• A direct phone call to the participants’ home. 

• A message posted on EBTV-3 and online at: 

www.eastbrunswick.org.

Insurance Information 

There is no medical insurance coverage included

Contact Form which must be completed and brought the day of the trip. If you would like to be 

seated with other people, please let us know at the time of registration so we can, whenever 

possible, groups tickets together. 

REMINDER - Our registration procedure requires one registration form per household. 

Every person you register on one form MUST reside in the same household. Please use an 

additional form if you are registering persons who reside at a different household. 

SUMMER DAY CAMPS 

Registration, payment procedure, and policies for summer day camp programs differ from
