Message from Patrick M. Rose, Aquatic Biologist

Executive Director, Save the Manatee ® Club

The manatee’s story is a heart-breaking one. Although manatees have been peacefully swimming in Florida’s waters for over a million years, human activities have put

them at a high risk of extinction. Many manatee deaths are human-related and most of these are from collisions with boats. This is tragic, as many if not most humanrelated

manatee deaths are utterly senseless and can be prevented. Further, the vast majority of living manatees bear scars from boat hits. These injuries can be

horrendous and affect the manatee’s ability to swim, mate, and birth their young.

Loss of habitat to coastal development is mainly responsible for the many threats to the manatee population. Threats include: loss of their winter warm-water habitat;

destruction of seagrass beds from pollution and accidental propeller scarring; withdrawals from surface waters, such as rivers and streams, for public water supply;

and climate change. Other threats include the reduction or elimination of funding for crucial state and federal protection programs. Low boater compliance in many

parts of Florida and a lack of on-water law enforcement offi cers contribute to the high number of manatee injuries and deaths from boat hits.

Perhaps the greatest threat of all is human indifference to their struggle for survival.

Despite heroic efforts to recover the manatee population, the harsh reality is that the most recent biological assessment of future risks predicts we could lose over 50% of the

population in the next 45 years. Thankfully, there is much we can do to safeguard Florida’s docile and defenseless manatees, like obeying posted speed zones and properly

disposing of our trash when boating. Manatees are cherished by so many, and for that we remain hopeful and optimistic.

Please join our life-saving efforts now so future generations can continue to enjoy the unique and magnifi cent manatee. Thank you so much for your support!

Save the Manatee ® Club is an award-winning, national nonprofi t 501(c)(3) organization that was founded in 1981 by Jimmy Buffett, world-renowned singer/songwriter,

and former Governor of Florida and U.S. Senator Bob Graham, to protect manatees and their aquatic habitat for future generations. Since that time, the Club has

successfully pushed for many protections that have aided manatees, including the implementation of over 333,000 acres of manatee-protected water bodies throughout

Florida. The Club’s long-term objective is the recovery of the species as defi ned by the federal Endangered Species Act of 1973. In order to accomplish this, the Club

raises public awareness; sponsors research, rescue, rehabilitation, and release efforts; supports land acquisition; promotes aquatic habitat protection;

works for improved protection measures; and supports conservation efforts in other countries.

Please visit our website: www.savethemanatee.org to fi nd out more about endangered manatees and what actions you can take to help; to make a donation; and to adopt a

manatee; or call us at 1-800-432-JOIN (5646). If you are a federal employee and participate in the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), please consider designating

Save the Manatee ® Club to be the recipient of your contributions. The Club’s CFC campaign number is 20422. Please also look for us in various state

and municipal campaigns as well.
