B UP EAT President’s Message News and views from the UWPIAA President Stuart Shepherd (78E) UWPIAA Board of Governors in just a few short months it will be time to travel to Tucson, Arizona, for “Coming Home – Reunion 2004.” Not only will we be celebrating with the reunioning casts, but we also hope that anyone who ever worked for UWP — in the office or on the road — will also join the celebration. All of the familiar faces that made staging in Tucson a real highlight of the UWP experience will be there to join the festivities. This will be a reunion you won’t want to miss! Alumni support this past year has been overwhelming and I am forever grateful for your generosity. Alumni contributed US $15,500 to the UWPIAA. These funds enable the Association to produce UpBeat and maintain the UWPIAA web site and Online Community — two very important benefits to all alumni! To encourage all alumni to help support their Association, Donna Reed (76A) has worked tirelessly on a new membership program. We look forward to sharing her work with you in the hope that all alumni will join together to ensure the UWPIAA is financially stable and its services are available to all alumni. (See “We Are Many, We Are One” on page 3 for more information on the new membership program.) I’m sure their bosses think they are incredible producers at their workstations each day, when in reality they are e-mailing alumni all over the world as they conduct the work of the UWPIAA. It’s not only a great place to find lost UWP friends, but also an ideal way to be sure that UpBeat is sent to your correct address. This directory is the only existing directory of UWP alumni, but we need your help to make it more accurate. B UP EAT B UP EAT UpBeat is published quarterly by the Up with People International Alumni Association. Editorial Guidelines UpBeat welcomes your articles, photos and story ideas on the huge array of subjects that affect alumni around the world. Please be aware, however, that we have a limited amount of space available in each issue of UpBeat. For this reason, we often cut, revise or reformat original material to make it fit the space available. We offer the following editorial hints and guidelines: • Focus, focus, focus. Make sure that every sentence of your article is relevant to the topic at hand. • Be concise. Say what you want to say in the fewest possible words. Try to avoid long introductory phrases and clichés which can bog down your text. • Make your article title specific to the story. UpBeat may change it, but if your original title clearly points to the content of your article, it will be a lot easier for us to track during the editing process. • The length of the article should be: for short articles on events or programs: 250-500 words (5-6 paragraphs of 2-3 sentences each); for long articles, profiles, human interest stories: 400-1,000 words (3/4 page to 2 pages single spaced with one-inch margins). Getting your article to us ... All articles and story ideas should be sent to Cheryl Alspach (95A), UpBeat Coordinator. Whenever possible, we ask that you e-mail your article or idea. Make it part of your e-mail message, since not all software is easily converted from one format to another. If you are not on-line, you can mail your article to Cheryl, or call her with your idea. Currently, these tools are the main link between alumni all over the globe. While volunteers produce UpBeat and update the web sites, there are still costs of US$36,000 per year to print and mail UpBeat and $21,500 per year to host the web sites. To ensure we continue to stay in touch and produce high-quality reunions yearly, we find it necessary to increase our revenue and establish a base operating fund. There are currently 19,000+ alumni throughout the globe, and we need everyone’s support! Therefore, the UWPIAA is launching its first major membership campaign. We will request your membership donations on an annual basis, based on the UWPIAA’s fiscal year beginning July 1 and ending June 30. The membership program will evolve as the UWPIAA evolves, although we intend to continue to use UpBeat and our web sites as our main communication vehicles. Please take the time to reflect on the memories you have, the experiences you’ve shared and the future you create as a result of your participation in UWP. For the sacrifice equal to the price of a pizza, you can help sustain the UWPIAA. Below are the various levels of giving suggested, and the great benefits of participating. Whether you are an attorney in Maine or a headhunter in Canada, an IT specialist in Tokyo or an actor in NYC, alumni live and work everywhere. WE are our greatest resource! $25.00 Continued UpBeat and web access as well as recognition in UpBeat and online.* $100.00 UpBeat and web access, plus a business advertisement for one issue of UpBeat and three months on the UWPIAA website.** You will also receive an autographed copy of the Colwells’ and Herb Allen’s new CD. $250.00 UpBeat and web access, plus a business advertisement for two issues of UpBeat and six months on the UWPIAA website.** You will also receive autographed copies of the Colwells’ and Herb Allen’s CD and video. $500.00 UpBeat and web access, plus a business advertisement for three issues of UpBeat and nine months on the UWPIAA website.** You will also receive autographed copies of the Colwells’ and Herb Allen’s CD and video, AND 10% off reunion registration during contribution year. You must contribute before your reunion in your reunion year in order to receive this discount. $1000.00 UpBeat and web access, plus a business advertisement for a full year in UpBeat (four issues) and 12 months on the UWPIAA web site.** You will also receive autographed copies of the Colwells’ and Herb “Bob, the Bobcat” Allen’s CD and video and 25% off reunion registration during contribution year. You must contribute before your reunion in your reunion year in order to receive this discount. Plus, a specially designed copy of UWP music, autographed by the Colwells, Blanton Belk and Lynne Morris. You can donate online at www.uwpiaa.org/donate.html, or check your June issue of UpBeat for your membership donation envelope. If you are unable to participate in the campaign in fiscal year 2004, you will still continue to receive UpBeat and have access to the web sites. Perhaps you are financially unable to donate in 2004, but in 2005 it will be a simple task.
