2003 Parade Information
PLAN FOR THE BEST!
HOTEL
The 2003 Porsche Parade will use as its
home the beautiful Saddlebrook Resort, located
approximately 20 miles north of the city of
Tampa Florida. Saddlebrook is well known by
golf and tennis aficionados, as it boost an Arnold
Palmer designed golf course and a world
famous tennis academy. Saddlebrook is large
enough to accommodate not only all attendees
housing requirements but has spacious enough
grounds to host almost all Parade events, a one
stop shopping sort of environment. The options
for hotel accommodations include a single room,
one or two bedroom suite and even a few threebedroom
suites. The resort has lovely grounds,
which lend themselves to walking short distances
either for recreation or to go from one
event to the next. The food service and restaurant
dinning at the resort has received the
Golden Platter Award for several years, making
the need for food a great opportunity to try some
quality cuisine. All banquets will be held on
property in the Grand Pavilion room.
Look forward to a resort experience that will
have you thinking of coming back in future years
to relive the pleasures of the Florida Parade!
Rich & Diane Tillotson
SECURITY
Security at Parade 2003 will be the least
thing you must think about. Your precious jewels
of cars will be perfectly safe, as well as any personal
items.
Parade 2003 is being held inside the
grounds of an exclusive resort and community.
PCA
Updates & Information
Entry to the area is controlled via a gate and a
guard employed by Saddlebrook resort where
the event is being held. The resort has a very
extensive and well trained security staff, which
are on duty 24 hours per day. In addition to
these normal and excellent security procedures,
a uniformed police officer with a marked patrol
car will be on duty every night of the Parade
from 7PM in the evening until 7AM the following
morning.
Security will be the best ever provided!
Please don't forget to bring along personal identification
and your PCA membership card.
Bob & Ruth Stia
PARKING
Saddlebrook Resort is a walking village;
therefore, the parking will be dispersed to several
lots throughout the resort. All parking will be
assigned upon arrival at the resort. A shuttle
service will be provided to take you from your
designated parking area to the hotel registration
area. 24-hour shuttle service will be available to
all parking areas.
Since the parking lots are dispersed, the
Concours Prep parking area will not be located
near the trailer parking. Shuttle service will be
provided between the two lots.
Accommodations will be made for those who
wish to prep their car at their trailer.
Concours preparation areas will be in two
lots with easier access to guest accommodations.
Entrants in the Concours will be limited to
one and one half parking places in the prep lots.
After the Concours on Monday, the prep lots will
be opened to all Porsches, not just Concours
entrants.
Be sure to mail your parade application
on Tuesday, January 14, 2003.
January 11th Snowmobile
Tour & Dinner
Winter Need
For Speed!
Mark your calendar for Saturday,
January 11th, 2003 for our Winter
Need For Speed event. We know
many of you Porsche pushers have a
need for speed that just doesn't go
away when the snow starts to fall.
This year, we have organized a
Snowmobile Tour in the beautiful
Rocky Mountains.
Whether you have ridden a snowmobile
before, or never have, you'll
have a great time. The tour will take
us high in the mountains, with some
great photo opportunities, and lots of
fun. The tour will begin in the Copper
Mountain area (within a 2-hour drive
for most of our members).
The tour is fabulous (we have
done several in the past), and will
include the following:
• Roughly a
2-hour, highly
scenic afternoon
tour
• A full safety
briefing, and
instruction on
the operation of
the snowmobiles
• Our own guide who will take us on
groomed mountain trails, well above
12000 feet!
• First-timers as well as experienced
riders will be accommodated
• Choose either one person or two
person snowmobiles
• All snowmobiles are new, top quality
machines
• If you don't bring your own, complimentary
snowsuits, snow boots, and
helmets are provided
• Dinner following the tour
Approximate cost will be $75 for
each driver, and $35 for each passenger
for the tour. Dinner costs will likely
run about $30 each, and will be at
a terrific restaurant in Summit County.
Please RSVP to Chris Lennon
(cjlennon@adelphia.net) if you'd like
to join us. We need to get a head
count ASAP for planning purposes,
so don't delay!
I'm writing this column in
early October, right after the
Fall Tour. I must say it completely
cowed me! And my
insurance company was
laughing so hard they could
barely process the claim.
Jim McDonald, President
Barry and Kathy Walsh
organized an outstanding
event, with spectacular roads, a great destination,
excellent food, great value, and lots of fun for all.
The tour sold out, with strong attendance from
both AMR and our friends from RMR. Everyone
had a great time (except maybe the cow, which
was clearly deranged). Congratulation, Barry and
Kathy, on a great job, and thanks for all the hard
work.
I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank
everyone who chaired or helped run an event this
past year. We are a club of volunteers, and this
volunteer effort is what makes our club successful.
Having been a member of several other PCA
regions over the year, I can honestly say that I
have never seen such a spirit of camaraderie or
helpfulness anywhere else. The spirit in this club
Zone 9 Announcements:
is shown by a simple example: we already have
volunteers to host future fall tours for the next
three years or more. We put on events that much
larger clubs never consider, and we run them successfully.
And have fun doing it. So, thank you to
my board members, thank you to my committee
chairs, thank you to my event chairs, thank you to
my event workers, and
thank you to all the AMR
event participants for
making this region a
friendly, fun place to be
around Porsches and
Porsche People. It's your
success, and your praise
is well earned.
The Fall Tour was AMR's last major driving
event for the year, so it's time to start getting the
cars ready for winter. But that doesn't mean the
club will stop. We still have our monthly membership
meetings, not to mention the upcoming
Christmas party. Be sure to come out for them.
It's your opportunity to make me the butt of some
more cow jokes. Udderly inconceivable.
h a p p y d r i v i n g JIM MCDONALD, PRESIDENT
We continue to be the only region in Zone 9 that posts positive growth. Congratulations!
&
I am happy to announce that Hank Godfredson is now on the National Club
Race Advisory Committee for 2003. He will be a great asset to the Committee.
Our meeting this year is in Chicago Novmber 16/17. Members of the committeeare:
John Crosby, Kathy Fricke, Steve Rashbaum, Chris Inglot, Ron Mistak, Susan Shire,
Bob Sandau and HankGodfredson. If you have any questions for the Club Racing
Committee, please do not hesitate to contact any member.
911 Heater/Blower Repair
Membership
As the temperature drops this winter and we remember
that 911s do actually have heaters (well, warmers
at least), I thought I would outline the operation and
basic repair procedure for air cooled 911s.
The first series of heaters we will discuss is 65-
68 911s. These are the simplest of all the systems.
When you pull the single red lever between the seats,
a cable is pulled and two heater valves under the car
are opened. This allows heated engine air into the
cabin. To direct warm air to your feet, open the slide
valves at the inside of the door threshold. To direct air
to the windshield, turn the black lever on the dash
(looks like a little window crank). The biggest problem
with this system is that most people don't know what
the defroster lever is for and it never gets used. The
lack of use gums up the cable and makes operation
difficult, if not impossible.
If you have no heat at all, check the engine
heater hoses. There are two one either side of the
main engine fan. They blow air into the heat exchangers.
After the air is heated, it exits the heat exchanger
via another hose to the heater valve on the bottom of
the car. If any of these hoses are loose, broken or
detached, heater operation is greatly diminished.
The second series of heaters is 69-74 911s. This
second series of heating is the same as the first, with
the exception of the air control in the passenger
cabin. Once the heater valve levers are pulled
(between the seats), all air direction and temperature
mixing is controlled by the three levers on the dash.
The bottom lever (red) directs the hot air up for
defrosting or down for foot warming. The top lever
controls the volume of fresh air entering the car (the
farther to the right the more fresh air). The middle
lever controls the direction of the fresh air, up or
down, just as with the lower red lever.
When problems occur with this system and all
engine heat connections are correct, it is best to
check that all the hoses and cables in the trunk are
operating properly. All the heater/fresh air controls are
located behind the dash inside the trunk. Remove the
large cardboard panel and have someone operate the
heater/fresh air system. If there are any hose or cable
malfunctions, it should be easy to see. The most
common failure will be a hose or cable that has
popped off. A quick repair here should get you
warmed up in no time.
The third series of heaters is 75-83 911s. This
version of heater is very similar to the version II
heater except that in this version, an electric blower
motor was added to the upper left side of the engine.
This blower was added to increase the volume of
warm air entering the car at low engine speeds, such
as idling in traffic. This greatly improved the operation
of the defroster system from the earlier cars. High
speed operation, such as on the freeway, was not
noticeably affected.
The first model to have an electric booster fan
was the 1975 911. In this model the fan stayed on
anytime the engine was on. While this made it easier
to wire the new fan, it did not make for long fan motor
life. These fan motors often fail due to their continuous
run time. In 1976 Porsche figured out that a
switching system would be needed to prolong fan life.
To accomplish this, a relay was added to the rear
engine relay board. To activate the relay, a micro
switch was installed at the heater levers between the
seats. The micro switch provides a ground signal to
the relay when the levers are raised. The activated
relay provides the power to the blower motor. The
motor gets its ground from the engine wiring harness.
This system was used until the 1983 model year.
If this system fails, first go to the electrical plug at
the blower motor and test for voltage with the red
levers raised. If voltage is present, repair or replace
the blower motor. If there is no voltage present, check
the 30a fuse at the relay board. If the fuse is ok,
remove the relay and verify that the voltage is reaching
the relay plug at terminal #30. If it is present,
bridge terminals #30 and #87 and the fan should
Fall Tour 2002
Alpine Mountain’s Annual Fall Tour
The tour destination was at beautiful
Lake City at the Quiet Moose Lodge.
The lodge was rustic and set on a
hillside with a fabulous view of the snowcovered
peaks and the hillsides, which
were aflame with fall colors. We had 36
cars start and 35 were there at the end.
One car had mechanical problems that
prevented it from completing the tour
they got back to their home late
Saturday and I am told all is well. The
tour was broken into 3 legs. The first leg
started at Baggadies Cafe with a full
breakfast and proceeded through southpark
to Salida. We made this the TSD
portion. The second leg was on a road
that had rock formations, trees a canyon and
almost no cars to get in the way - a true Porsche
road. The third leg was on a road that had fall
colors on both sides of the road that twisted and
turned through the mountains to Lake City. Now I
am sure that there will be some vicious rumors
flying around about one of the cars that had an
encounter with a member of the bovine clan. I am
told that this was a MOOOving experience for
them. The official story is that the animal with udder
stupidity attacked the Boxster. And as you all know
German engineering prevailed the car had only
minor scratches. Dinner and Breakfast on Sunday
was at the Quiet Moose and Chef Jesse was in
rare form. With the spread that was put out it was
hard for anyone to leave hungry. The merriment at
the bar went on until the wee hours of the morning.
Cathy and I want to thank all of you who came
on this tour and made it a great success. I want to
also thank the following:
Baggadies Cafe, Pat & Melissa at the start,
Leonard at check point #2, Marsha - Chef Jesse
and the staff of the Quiet Moose Lodge, Dave &
Karen at the Matterhorn Lodge
We also want to give a very special thank you
to Bud & Brenda McQuay for their help planning
working checkpoint #1 and the great salsa.
We hope that all of you had as much fun as we
did hosting this tour. We would appreciate the opportunity
to get any copies of tour pictures that you took.
I swear the cow was singing "Climb
Every Boxster.” And all I can say is, it
was a very ‘moo-ving’ experience. Here
Ron Maxwell and I were on the Fall
Tour. The Blind Leading the Blind.
Ron, driving, couldn't see due to eye
surgery, and I, navigating, missed every
sign we passed. Not to mention the T-
S-D checkpoint. Here we were driving
through Salida, both of us fixedly staring
to the left to find the 'Feed Store.’ Which
didn’t exist. Meanwhile, on
the right side of the road,
Bud and Brenda McQuay
are frantically waving as
we blithely sail past.
Finally, about 4 miles past
Salida on the road to
Canyon City, we decide
that maybe, just maybe,
we might have missed the
checkpoint. What to do?
Continue in the hopes that the checkpoint
is still ahead, or turn around and
head back to Salida? Of course, the
spirit of cooperation and consensus
reigned within the car. When the knives
were all thrown and the fisticuffs ended,
we decided to turn around. And finally
found the checkpoint. Big sign.
Orange. With checkered flags standing
in a traffic cone. So see, it was all the
rallymaster's fault - he made the checkpoint
too obscure. And (obviously!) on
the wrong side of the road. Hmpff.
So, we eat lunch and take off on
the next leg. Now it's just a nice drive
while we respond to some drivel - er,
questions, the rallymaster has assigned.
We're coasting, enjoying the weather
and the road. For awhile we're in a caravan
with four other Fall Tour porsches.
We drive through Saguache (pronounce
that correctly and you get a door prize:
a cow patty) and pick up route 114. The
road is almost empty and fun to drive.
I'm driving and cruising along about a
mile behind Walt and Kathy Fricke,
when I see them brake suddenly. Cows
are being driven down both shoulders of
the road, and some cross the road in
front of them. So, I slow way down and
approach. Just as I get to the herd
(which is still off the road but on both
shoulders), one heifer decides to cross
the road with her calf. Why does the
cow cross the road? To get to the hood
of the Boxster. I stop. Cow doesn't.
Calf bawls. Cow takes short cut across
hood. I bawl. Cow runs off, calf in tow.
I look at dented fender and decide the
car can still be moo-ved. I look at the
cow and have visions of beefsteak and
8
new cowhide seats. Cow decides to run off further.
Smart cow.
No help from the cowhand, so Ron and I return
to Saguache to the Sheriff's office. It's visiting day for
the jail, and things are hectic. The one officer on duty
is responding to another call. So Ron and I wait.
Finally, a deputy comes in to work early and helps (I
wish to commend Deputy Archuleta and the
Saguache Sheriff's department for their help. They
were courteous, professional and helpful throughout
my involvement with them). I get the paperwork to
file the report, and Ron and I take off to try to catch
up to the tour. It's too late to make the checkpoint, so
we have to decide whether to open the envelope or
not. Open the envelope? How can we? That's
defeat! Real Rallyists never open the envelope! And
it's obvious from the map that we're going to wind up
in Crested Butte. We'll just go there and look for the
We are Unbloodied,
but Cowed!
Porsches! Stroll in like nothing happened.
Luckily, we get cold feet in Gunnison. We
decide to open the envelope, and Lo! And Behold!
The destination is Lake City. Oops. So on we go,
and finally arrive around 7:30. Everyone's been wondering
what's going on, and rumors are rampant: "The
Boxster was totaled!” "There's dead cow all over the
highway!” "The cowhand attacked them!” And Barry
Walsh: “They’ve got the check to pay for this thing!
What do I do?” But we arrive in one piece. The
drinks start flowing, and then the cow jokes. A lot of
bull gets thrown around; clearly this is going to be
milked for all it's worth. Dinner is served - prime rib -
and I'm dreaming about where it could have come
from. Then awards, and by unanimous agreement,
Ron and I win the ‘Spin Out Trophy.’ To the tune of
more cow jokes. In the end, all we can say is “We
are unbloodied, but cowed.”
Past Event Recap:
968 Tour. Seven cars participated for
the dinner Saturday night, and 4 cars
participated in the drive on Sunday.
This included a car from Road
Runner Region and a car from
Missouri. All participants thoroughly
enjoyed the event. Chris Lennon
plans to host it again next year.
PPIR. Approximately 52 drivers participated
on both Saturday and
Sunday, although both days had oneday
attendees. 17 cars stayed for
timing Sunday. The event currently
has one bill outstanding for the Fire
Truck. Participants provided very
positive feedback about the event,
expressing a desire to return in future
years.
Fall Tour. This was an udderly
delightful event and involved no mooving
violations. The tour sold out (no
bull), and even when the weather
turned wet overnight, it couldn’t cow
the spirits of the participants.
Everyone partied late, and the
Beefeaters definitely flowed. Event
Chair Barry Walsh reported that the
event ran in the black [angus]. All
involved felt that they received great
value for the cost of the event. The
board suggested President Jim
McDonald purchase a cowcatcher for
his Boxster.
10
Upcoming Events:
Holiday party. This is still planned for the
Warehouse. We will do gifts for charity again
rather than a gift exchange. Chair Doreen Burr is
considering what entertainment to have at
the party.
Committee Reports:
Nominating Committee. The ballot was printed
and included in the latest (Oct) issue of Mountain
Passages. We are now waiting for the membership
to mail in their votes.
Treasurer’s report. The club treasury is in good
shape and larger than this time last year. Deposits
are outstanding for the Christmas Party and next
year's fall tour. The report was approved.
Membership. The club has now grown to 190
members and continues to grow.
Chief Instructor. Pat DiGiovanni has agreed to be
the Chief Instructor for 2003. Jerry Cowan will fill
in for the times Pat is unable to attend events.
Advertising. Classic Car Condos has been billed
for advertising for the Sep-Dec 2002 timeframe.
Equipment. The beer left over from DE events this
year needs to be removed from the trailer before it
freezes. The board decided to donate it to the
upcoming Joint Board Meeting.
CMC. The motorsports council is unhappy with the
lack of track improvements at Pueblo under the
current management. They are going to push the
manager to start making improvements (grandstands,
bathrooms, repaving, etc.). If necessary,
they will go to the Pueblo City Council and ask for
a management change.
Pueblo. We need to obtain a block of rooms for the
dates of next year’s track event there. This is
State Fair month, so we need to book early to
ensure availability.
PPIR. The board discussed the future of the PPIR
track event. This event has been drawing
decreasing participation over the past two years,
and we are risking high financial loss while not
making any money on the event. Further, it was
very difficult to get volunteers to help work the
event this year - those who did had two to three
jobs each. The current chair has expressed unwillingness
to chair the event again next year. A suggestion
was made to consider running the event as
a joint event with RMR, and possibly to invite
another car club (i.e. BMW club) to participate.
One person suggested holding a one-day event
rather than a two-day event. Another suggestion
was to not run timing at the event so there is more
track time offered for the entrant's fee. A motion
was made that we discuss with RMR at the Joint
Board Meeting that if a suitable date is available,
we run a joint RMR-AMR event
next year, splitting the work
responsibilities, costs, and revenues.
The motion
was passed.
968 Get-together
This event, which focused on, but
was not exclusive to the Porsche
968 model, was a great success.
For those who might not be
familiar with the 968, it was the last
(and we think the best) in the
Chris Lennon 924/944/968 front engine watercooled
series. It was only built from
1992-1995, with just 2,417 coupes and 2,244 cabriolets
being imported to the US/Canada. Needless to
say, you don't see many of these on the roads.
We were thrilled to host seven 968s from
Colorado and New Mexico. Thanks to Allan and Alice
Worrell, Bob Blackwell, Rob Shilling, John Ellis, George
Peabody, and Roger Sass for keeping our silver
cabriolet company with their beautiful cars.
The event began with a BBQ on Saturday night.
This proved to be a great chance to
meet with fellow Porsche lovers
(yes - we did have some non-
968ers, too). We all learned a lot
about the 968 from each other. Bob
Blackwell even allowed test drives
of his silver 1993 coupe with different
settings on his Koni Yellow
adjustable shocks.
On display were original dealer
brochures as well as reviews of the
968 when it was first released in
late 1991.
The evening wrapped up with
some virtual Porsche test driving via Need For
Speed: Porsche unleashed. Fortunately, none of us
abuse our real cars the way we did the 1999 996 we
tossed around the streets of Monte Carlo on the
computer!
Sunday was a driving tour of beautiful Southern
Colorado. The drive took us through the United
States Air Force Academy grounds, Garden of the
Gods, Manitou Springs, then up to Cripple Creek (fun
except for the inevitable RV 2/3 the way up the pass),
then down some terrific (and little traveled) Porsche
roads to Canon City, and back to Colorado Springs.
Along the way, we actually had to come to a stop
three times for 'wildlife' on the road - two small herds
of cattle, and three elk.
Our lunch stop in Cripple Creek held a couple of
surprises. Arrangements had been made to park our
Porsches along Bennett Avenue along with the classic
cars of the Cruise Above The Clouds car show.
We tried to show those classic car owners that there
are indeed cars (great ones) built outside of Detroit.
All agreed that it was a lot of fun and somewhat
educational getting this special interest group together.
Finally, the award for dedication to the event must
go to John Ellis. John drove his white coupe over
750 miles from Springfield, MO to the event to participate,
then had to drive an additional 150 miles or so
to his home in Avon, CO following the Sunday driving
tour. John proves these cars are for driving!
The Tech Quiz answer is C.
operate. If it works, check the ground circuit from the
relay to the micro switch. Connect a test light to fuse
#2 and relay plug pin #85. The test light should light
up with the levers in the up position. If it does not, the
micro switch may need cleaning and/or replacement.
The fourth series of heaters spans from 84-89. In
1984, the earlier relay system was replaced by a control
unit system. The control unit determines fan motor
speed by inputs such as engine and vehicle speed as
well as inside cabin temperature. Diagnostics for this
system are more complex and, other than checking
for blown fuses, should be left to a professional.
Another boost to cabin heated air was made in
1984 with the installation of booster foot well blowers.
Below the dash, on the far left and right sides, reside
two small blower motors. These motors, in essence,
supercharge the heated air in the cabin to provide an
even more powerful blast of air to the defroster and
foot well vents. These blowers are activated when the
switch above the hand brake is turned on. When
these blowers fail, it is usually due to lack of use. If
the motors are not used, the bushings in the motor
bind up causing an excessive load which will blow the
fuses. The fuses are located on the outside of the foot
well blower motors. If the motor does not work after
voltage is restored, the motors will need repair or
replacement.
The fifth and final series of heaters we will discuss
is for 90-97 911s. This final series of heating
systems is completely different from the earlier ones.
The heat from the engine is controlled by a set of
back pressure valves. Their operation is quite simple.
If a heater flap is closed in the car, all engine heat
dumps out to the ground. However, if a hose inside
the car falls off, the cabin will be filled with a full blast
of heat. This is the usual problem with this late heating
system: too much heat as opposed to not enough
like in the earlier systems. As with the earlier systems,
it is best to check all the hose connections, as
well as all the fuses for the climate control system.
After that, the checks are best left to a Porsche technician
who is familiar with all the complex workings of
the system.
As you can see from this article, many of the
problems with Porsche heater systems are with the
blowers themselves. While replacement of these
items is quite expensive, there are electrical motor
rebuilders who may be able to repair them for less
than half of the replacement cost. Give them a try.
You just may get a warm cozy feeling from it.
