ACCESSING LIBRARY DATABASES FROM HOME

USING ATHENS

1. WHAT IS ATHENS?

Athens is an online service the Library purchases to give users one username and password for

off-campus access most of our electronic resources. It allows you to access our databases and

journals on any computer with internet access. Access is limited to current Whitireia staff and

students. Why the name Athens? Think Athens and think knowledge—Athens the city is the cradle of

one of the world’s greatest civilizations. The name Athens comes from the goddess Athena, the

goddess of wisdom and knowledge. If you would like to use Athens read on!

3. HOW DO I GET STARTED?

After you have successfully enrolled at Whitireia, and your course has started, then you can register

for Athens. Once you are registered, you have access to Athens until the finishing date of your

course. You must register for each year of your study or work at Whitireia.

On Campus Courses

First, log on to a computer on any of our Whitireia campuses,

then complete the online self-registration form

You will need: an email account; your Whitireia ID

number; and the finishing date of your course (printed

on student ID card). After registration, login details

will be automatically emailed.

Off-Campus Courses

Students doing distance courses: faculty staff members are responsible for liaising with the library

to organise Athens registration for their classes. When registration is completed, Athens login details

will be sent to students directly via email.

4. LOGGING IN TO ATHENS

Once I’ve registered, where do I go to log in?

There are 2 ways to log in to Athens:

LIBRARY

Go to MyAthens login page

1. MyAthens or web site: http://www.athensams.net/myathens

2. Enter your Athens username and password

OR

Go to Database

‣ Links to databases are on the library website. Click on the database name. When prompted enter your

Athens login.

‣ Athens can be recognised by its logo on the database page or a link on the page labelled Athens.

For example, click Athens:

Your Athens Username

• What is my Athens username?

Your Athens username is unique to you and for your individual use only. Once registered,

your username will be wcp followed by first initial, last name, 001 e.g. wcpflastname001

• What should I do if I forget my Athens username?

First, try the above “formula” for your username. Second, if you still need help, contact

library staff.

Your Athens Password

• What should I do if I forget my Athens password?

First, if you know your username and email, try resetting your password using this link:

Second, if you still need help contact library staff.

• How do I change my Athens password once my account is set up?

Log into MyAthens, click on the tab “My Account”

and Change Password.

What resources are not part of Athens?

Some individual e-journals and NZ databases. To find out more you can login to MyAthens, and click

on the Home tab.

How do I login to Proquest from home?

Answer:

Step 1 Go to the library website.

For example: Type in the web address: www.whitireia.ac.nz > Click on Library

Step 2 Scroll down the page, and click on the link: Athens: Off-Campus Access

Hint: Add this page to your Favourites

Step 3 On the Athens page look for the heading: “Once I have signed up, where do I go to log in?”

Click on the link to MyAthens
