A Message<br />
f ro m t he Dean<br />
Dear Alumni and Friends:<br />
Eight months ago, as I assumed the role<br />
<strong>of</strong> dean <strong>of</strong> the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong>,<br />
I was just coming to learn about the<br />
“<strong>Auburn</strong> Family,” being “All In,” and how<br />
great it is to be an <strong>Auburn</strong> Tiger. I’ve been<br />
impressed with the loyalty <strong>of</strong> our students,<br />
faculty, staff, alumni and friends — not just<br />
in the context <strong>of</strong> a national championship<br />
or, most recently, in the efforts to save the<br />
Toomer’s Oaks.<br />
I’ve been equally impressed by the passion<br />
<strong>of</strong> our students, not just in their classroom<br />
responsibilities, but in their commitment and outreach to the community and<br />
the region. As you’ll read, our <strong>Auburn</strong>Voices advocacy program is a success in<br />
serving the educational needs in our surrounding communities through our<br />
students’ investment <strong>of</strong> time, enthusiasm and personal resources. That is just<br />
one <strong>of</strong> the many examples <strong>of</strong> how our students are striving to better the world<br />
around them.<br />
Our faculty and staff are to be equally commended. Building on campus<br />
successes, they are reaching beyond the university’s boundaries to create learning<br />
opportunities for our students. Whether on campus, in the state or around<br />
the world, our faculty and staff are ambassadors on behalf <strong>of</strong> our university and<br />
carry with them our college’s mission <strong>of</strong> building better futures for all.<br />
As you read this issue <strong>of</strong> Keystone, I encourage you to see your role in our<br />
success. We have alumni representing education through all walks <strong>of</strong> life: as<br />
Alabama’s teacher <strong>of</strong> the year, in various levels <strong>of</strong> Alabama’s state government,<br />
as the new head football coach <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Florida and as the top commander<br />
<strong>of</strong> our armed forces in Iraq. Amid those stories, there are dozens <strong>of</strong><br />
alumni who are putting their <strong>Auburn</strong> education into action by making significant<br />
contributions through their chosen pr<strong>of</strong>essions.<br />
That, to me, is what being a member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Auburn</strong> Family — and being “All<br />
In” — is all about. It’s expressed most clearly when each <strong>of</strong> us is engaged with<br />
those around us and contributes to making our world a better place through the<br />
transformative power <strong>of</strong> education. And it’s evident that our graduates do this<br />
in a manner that brings great esteem to our university.<br />
So, thank you for being “All In” and for the opportunity to be part <strong>of</strong> the<br />
“family.” It is truly great to be an <strong>Auburn</strong> Tiger!<br />

Where we stand<br />
U.S.News & World Report holds<br />
college in high regard<br />
The <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> maintained its status<br />
as one <strong>of</strong> “America’s Best Graduate Schools’’ in<br />
U.S.News & World Report’s 2012 survey, released<br />
in March 2011.<br />
<strong>Auburn</strong> occupied the No. 71 ranking, placing<br />
it among the top 25 percent <strong>of</strong> schools surveyed<br />
for the fifth consecutive year. The college also<br />
holds the top national ranking among schools <strong>of</strong><br />
education in Alabama, public or private.<br />
The college’s rehabilitation counseling program<br />
retained the No. 17 ranking in the Health<br />
Disciplines category.<br />
U.S.News & World Report determines its<br />
rankings based on a formula that includes data on<br />
admissions, graduation rates and research activity,<br />
which it combines with feedback from reputational<br />
surveys completed by academic experts.<br />
The magazine polls deans, program directors and<br />
senior faculty to assess the academic quality <strong>of</strong><br />
programs.<br />
Kinesiology improves NAK<br />
standing in NAK<br />
The Department <strong>of</strong> Kinesiology moved up six<br />
spots in the National Academy <strong>of</strong> Kinesiology’s<br />
(NAK) most recent ranking <strong>of</strong> doctoral programs<br />
nationwide.<br />
<strong>Auburn</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s department moved up<br />
to No. 22 in the newest rankings, which reflect<br />
a survey period between 2005 and 2009. The<br />
department previously held the No. 28 ranking.<br />
The NAK promotes the study and educational<br />
applications <strong>of</strong> the art and science <strong>of</strong> physical<br />
activity and human movement.<br />
Program receives<br />
re- accreditation<br />
The Counseling Psychology doctoral program<br />
in the Department <strong>of</strong> Special <strong>Education</strong>,<br />
Rehabilitation and Counseling recently earned<br />
re-accreditation from the American Psychological<br />
Association (APA). The APA is the largest<br />
worldwide association <strong>of</strong> psychologists with more<br />
than 150,000 members.<br />
