workshop, undergoing, a background check updated in even-numbered

Parish Picnic
The St. Vincent DePaul Parish
Picnic will be held on Friday,
August 2nd, Saturday, August
3rd, and Sunday, August 4th.
We are counting on the support
of ALL PARISHIONERS to make
this large parish event a success.
If you have not worked at
the picnic before please volunteer
in helping at least 2 to 3
hours. Doing this will make it
easier for all and in turn enable
us to do a better job for our visitors.

ST. VINCENT JR HIGH VOLLEYBALL
CAMP
There will be a volleyball camp for all girls going into grades 5-8 for
the 2013-2014 school year. It will be held July 22-25 in the newly airconditioned
SVHS gym. 5th and 6th grade girls will meet from
8:00—10:00 am and 7th and 8th grade girls will meet from 10:00
am—12:00 noon. Cost per girl is $30 and may be turned in on the
first day of camp. No pre-registration. Bring a water bottle and be
ready to have fun!!!

SEMINARY PICNIC ENTERTAIMENT
There will be no big rides at the seminary picnic this year instead
the following entertainment will be featured: zip lining,
climbing wall, moon bounce, obstacle course, caterpillar, and other items.
Ticket cost is $1.00/ticket. Most events will require one or two tickets and
one event will take three tickets. Tickets will go on sale after Masses, except
the 7:00 am Mass, on July 20/21 and July 27/28. Tickets will also be available
in the Parish Center office Monday thru Friday, 7:30 a.m.—4:00 p.m.

Drama Camp 2013
Creating a Scene will be held from
July 29-August 2 from 9:00 am —
12:00 pm in the Hospitality Room
in the DePaul Building.
Youth entering grades 3-9 for the
2013-14 school year are welcome
to attend the camp. Activities will
include acting games, singing and
dancing character development,
rehearsing a scene, and performing.
All registered campers will receive
a camp t-shirt!! Cost for the camp
is $50.

ADULT FAITH FORMATION AND RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
RCIA
Inquiry sessions will be held on Wednesday, July 17 at 7:00 pm and on Tuesday,
Aug. 6 at 7:00 pm in the Seton Room. These are for those who have
signed up for RCIA or for anyone who is thinking about joining the church. It is
necessary to attend only one time. RCIA begins September 4th.
ADULT RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
THE INCARNATION: KEEPING GOD IN THE FLESH by Fr. Ron Rolheiser
OMI will be offered on Mon. July 15 at 1:00 and repeated at 7:00 in the
Seton Room. Part II will be offered on Mon. July 22 at 1:00 and repeated
at 7:00 pm. These will be offered in the Seton Room.

BIBLE STUDY
Fr. Steve will conduct a Bible Study this coming Fall and would like to know your
interests. One possibility is FINDING CHRIST IN YOUR MARRIAGE. Please

LIFE IN THE SPIRIT SEMINAR
The Life in the Spirit Seminars are designed as an introduction to a life lived in
the power of the Holy Spirit. They provide an opportunity for people to find out
more about that life, and to be helped in taking the first steps of a new relationship
with the Lord. For those who are not Christians at all, they can serve as an
introduction to Christianity and a time to make a first commitment to Jesus
Christ. For those who are already Christians, they offer help in finding a fuller
release of the Holy Spirit to live a deeper Christian life.
Sessions are 1 1/2 hours long.
They are also free.
A Guided Scripture Silent Retreat is
scheduled for Friday, August 9 at 7:00
pm to Sunday, August 11, at 3:00 pm
at the Sanguis Christi Spirituality Center,
3401 Arsenal Street, St. Louis,
MO 63118. A directed retreat is a
one-on-one experience. A director
meets with the retreatant each day
to reflect on the interior movements
of the retreatant's prayer and to discern
with the retreatant the presence
of the Spirit. A guided retreat
includes considerable private prayer
time, silence and solitude. The retreat
directors are Sr. Ginny
Jaskiewicz, CPPS and Sr. Carol Orf,
CPPS. The cost is $90.00. Meals are
taken in silence. Bring a Bible. This
retreat is open to women of all
ages. The deadline for registration is
Friday, August 2, 2013. For more

INDULGENCES
"Every sin has consequences. It
disrupts our communion with God
and the church, weakens our ability
to resist temptation, and hurts others.
The necessity of healing these
consequences, once the sin itself has
been forgiven, is called temporal punishment.
Prayer, fasting, almsgiving,
and other works of charity can take
away entirely or diminish this temporal
punishment. Because of the fullness
of redemption obtained for us
by Christ, the Church attaches to certain
prayers and actions an indulgence
or pardon, that is, the full or
partial remission of temporal punishment
of the consequences of sin
when an individual uses such a
prayer or engages in such an action."

faithful a plenary indulgence throughout
the Year of Faith (Oct. 11, 2012

indulgence for the temporal punishment
of sins, imparted by the
mercy of God and applicable also to
the souls of deceased faithful, may
be obtained by all faithful who, truly
penitent, take Sacramental Confession
and the Eucharist and pray
in accordance with the intentions of

MINISTRY OF PRAISE
This is an invitation to join the Ministry of Praise. It was launched in
August 1986 and has 508 members.
There are no meetings or dues. Members are commissioned at a
brief ceremony after the 8:00 am Mass on a Saturday.
Members pledge simply to offer their prayers, works and sacrifices
for the good of the Parish and Church.
Membership is open to any adult in the Parish.

The Ladies of Charity food pantry served 328 families
consisting of 794 people in June. Nineteen
(19) new families signed up for food. Thanks to all
the generous people who contributed to the
food pantry in any way. Continue to remember us when you go
shopping as we can use shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, pasta
sauce and tuna.
There are baskets located at the four entrances of church for your
donations. The Poor Box, located in the back of church by the east
door, helps us stock our shelves.

who would be willing
to drive to South St. Louis
County area to pick up Panara
Bread sweet rolls and bread on
Friday evenings. It would be
best to have a mini-van or larger
vehicle since they give us
quite a bit of bakery
items. The Ladies distribute
this bread, etc., to the poor
when they come to get their
bags of groceries. The wonderful
family that has been doing
this for us for years can no
longer help us. Please call

Box tops, Best Choice UPC labels,

FOCUS ON THE WORD
15th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Lawyers don't always fare so well in popular culture. Even the television
shows that exalt some aspects of the legal profession (like Law & Order or The
Good Wife) also have some lawyers that are less than noble in both their personal
and professional lives. Even in Shakespeare's time this ambivalence toward
lawyers was evident in Henry VI, Part 2 when Dick the butcher, one of the rebels,
proposes to kill all the lawyers since by their arguments they can have a man
condemned as easily as freed. Still, every day people turn to lawyers seeking
their help with a host of problems. The love-hate relationship continues.
In the Gospel this weekend, the scholar of the law is looking for the way
to life. His question is sincere. He is trying to understand what is required of him.
He can quote the law, indeed, probably even lives by it. But the question of who
is a neighbor is one of legal precision. The interpretation of the Mosaic law
based the fact of one being a neighbor on a covenantal relationship. Those
who worshipped the one God were considered as one's neighbor. In the time of
Jesus this narrow interpretation was being reconsidered. Some religious scholars
suggested that a more universal application was needed, while others held to
the tradition that Samaritans, foreigners, and those outside the law were not
neighbors under the law. Jesus makes his position clear, although by coming at
it from the other direction. It is the Samaritan who shows himself to be a
neighbor.
Maybe that is where the argument lies for us today. We cannot define
with legal precision who is going to be a neighbor to us. All we can do is decide
to be neighborly toward others, that is, to show them the very love with which
we love ourselves. And then rely on God's mercy that someone will be there for
us as a neighbor in our time of need.
