Pacific. She was in action in <strong>Jan</strong>uary 1942 in<br />

Fiji waters against a Japanese submarine,<br />

which submerged after a brief exchange <strong>of</strong><br />

fire.<br />

Arabis <strong>and</strong> Arbutus<br />

The corvcucs ARABIS <strong>and</strong> ARBUTUS<br />

were additions to the Royal New Zeal<strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>Navy</strong> during 1944. The former joined the<br />

-Mh Mincswecping Flotilla at the beginning<br />

<strong>of</strong> 1945, <strong>and</strong> ARBUTUS served with the<br />

British Pacific Fleet during the final stages<br />

<strong>of</strong> the war.<br />

Minesweepers<br />

During 1940-41, a number <strong>of</strong> coastal<br />

ships <strong>and</strong> fishing trawlers had been fitted out<br />

as minesweepers. Several <strong>of</strong> them, operating<br />

as the 25th Mincswecping Flotilla, were<br />

employed in Junc-Scplcmbcr 1941 in<br />

sweeping a considerable minefield that had<br />

been laid in June 1940 by a German raider in<br />

the eastern <strong>and</strong> northern approaches to<br />

Auckl<strong>and</strong>. Up to 16 September 1941 the<br />

flotilla accounted for 130 mines. HMNZS<br />

PUR1RI was sunk through hitting a mine,<br />

with the loss <strong>of</strong> her <strong>of</strong>ficer <strong>and</strong> four ratings.<br />

During 1942 the anti-submarine <strong>and</strong><br />

mincswecping forces <strong>of</strong> the Royal New<br />

Zeal<strong>and</strong> <strong>Navy</strong> were strengthened by the<br />

arrival <strong>of</strong> seven new vessels from Great<br />

Britain.<br />

During the night <strong>of</strong> 29-30 <strong>Jan</strong>uary 1943<br />

HMNZ Ships KIWI <strong>and</strong> MOA. two antisubmarine<br />

vessels <strong>of</strong> the 25lh Mincswecping<br />

Flotilla then serving in the Solomon Isl<strong>and</strong><br />

area, fought a gallant <strong>and</strong> successful action<br />

against the large <strong>and</strong> powerfully armed<br />

Japanese submarine. I-1. Forced to surface<br />

after being depth charged, the submarine<br />

was engaged by gunfire from the two small<br />

ships. A fierce action lasted more than one<br />

hour <strong>and</strong> KIWI thrice rammed the<br />

submarine, which finally struck a reef <strong>and</strong><br />

was wrecked. One Japanese survivor was<br />

picked up HMNZS MOA was sunk at<br />

Tulagi. Solomon Isl<strong>and</strong>s by enemy air attack<br />

on 7 <strong>Apr</strong>il 1943. five ratings being killed<br />

<strong>and</strong> 15 injured. In August 1943 HMNZS<br />

III took part, with aircraft, in the sinking <strong>of</strong><br />

another large Japanese submarine, the 1-17,<br />

from which six survivors were picked up.<br />

En addition to the 25th Mincswecping<br />

Flotilla. 12 motor launches constructed in<br />

New Zeal<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> commissioned in 1942-43<br />

operated in New Zeal<strong>and</strong> waters, <strong>and</strong> from<br />

early 1944 in the Solomon Isl<strong>and</strong>s area<br />

where they carried out anti-submarine patrol<br />

<strong>and</strong> escort duties. Sixteen harbour defence<br />

motor launches, commissioned during 1943-<br />

44, did duty principally at Auckl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

Wellington, one being detached for service<br />

in the Fiji Group. Eleven anti-submarine<br />

mincswecping trawlers were constructed in<br />

New Zeal<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> commissioned during<br />

1942-44.<br />
