Respect is a Community Responsibility

A few weeks ago some students brought to our attention a website where high school students can post anonymous

messages about members of their school community. While the intent of the site is positive, some Upper School students

posted unkind or disrespectful comments about peers and some teachers. At an assembly I spoke to 9 th to 11 th grade

students sharing with them my concerns and the concerns of students and teachers who were victims of cyber bullying. I

implored our community to visit the site and flag inappropriate posts (thereby removing them) and challenge anyone who

made a disrespectful posting. I also asked those who made disrespectful posts to come forward and accept responsibility.

I am very pleased to share that six students came forward and that numerous posts were flagged inappropriate by students

and removed. While consequences were assigned, I applaud those who came forward. We can all make mistakes and it is

a sign of strong character when we accept responsibility and learn from our mistakes. Sometimes people think there is

little that can be done about cyber bullying. I don’t feel this way and I hope that the actions taken by peers and the school

by saying no to disrespect demonstrates that respect matters at CA and that it can be addressed and preserved by anyone

in the community.

.Special Trimester-3 Events

T3 is packed with great activities and I encourage the community to review the events listed below, our website and the

portal calendar for updates. May is especially busy as students take AP exams, compete in playoffs and prepare for

graduation. This means that students need to keep up with their work in April, because May will offer very little time to

catch up.

Special Event Details

Below are details on some upcoming special events that may require careful planning. Full details of events coordinated

by CA employees and students are often emailed and/or posted on the web. In particular, I encourage students and

parents to review May 23-25. Depending on the grade level and student, some events will require advanced planning by

students and parents.

Advanced Placement Exams (May 7-18)

AP exam information has been distributed to all students taking the exams. For some students, AP exams may conflict

with athletic events. Students will need to read all communications very carefully, checking details and planning their

time wisely. If AP conflicts arise, students must immediately get in touch with Darshana Wani and their coach. If

students miss an AP exam due to illness or an approved conflict, AP make-up exams are scheduled on either May 23, 24

or 25.

I hope this letter will help you plan what’s ahead. I don’t anticipate that any of these events or dates will change

(certainly major ones won’t!), but if anything does change or is added, I will let you know. It is also a good idea to check

monthly newsletters and the senior web page for updates during the school year. If you have any questions, I would be

glad to answer them. You may also contact senior grade leaders Ms Bonsey and Ms. Maloy.

I hope you have a wonderful spring trimester. I look forward to seeing you at school events.

Regards,

Mitch McGuigan

Head of Upper School
