Welcome to Prague and we hope our beautiful city offers
you something new and interesting to discover. As always,
we’ve put together some of the best of the best happening
in February and March. Our events section begins on
P.8 and whether you like art, opera or roller coasters,
something should be there for you. Want to explore more
Czech beer? Check out this issue’s Pocket Watch in which
we introduce you to some craft beers and where to find
them. And don’t forget Valentine’s Day. Whether you made
romantic Prague a destination for the love holiday; or you
are just looking for an amorous meal during your visit; have
a look at our recommendations on P. 36
In February, some of our best athletes will be out of town;
visiting Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympics. The
Czech’s best hopes for a medal come in the form of our
hockey team. A couple others; Martina Sáblíková (speed
skating) and Lukáš Bauer (cross-country skiing) are also
expected to do quite well in Vancouver.
The Czech Republic doesn’t have the most green of
status among other EU members. Seems our pollution
comes mainly from our love of cars, however a planned
modernization of a north Bohemia coal plant has upset
the citizens of Micronesia. The Pacific island country
in desperate danger of disappearing due to rising sea
levels officially asked the Czech government not to
approve the planned work. They said the coal plant
produces 40 times more carbon dioxide than their entire
country. The Czech government said they would take
Micronesia’s protest under consideration.
Now get out into the fresh spring air; and enjoy your
stay!
Prague at night is beautiful indeed,
and no where can that beauty and
peace be experienced more than
near Prague Castle at Hradčanské
náměstí. Surrounding this square
is also Schwarzenberský palác and
Salmovský palác and at the end, the
towering spires of St. Vitus.
A word from our Mayor
Welcome to the city
that will amaze you with
its peerless genius loci,
fascinating architecture,
abundant cultural and social
life and its unparalleled
atmosphere. These are
not any pompous words
of a pretentious mayor but
evaluations of the visitors who have seen Prague
before you. Thanks to this fact our metropolis belongs
among the most visited ones in Europe.
Enjoy your stay in a historic jewel hidden in the heart
of Europe and at the same time in a modern and
dynamically developing city. I am convinced that you
will appreciate this unique symbiosis just like all your
predecessors.
Welcome to Prague!
FOREWORD
“Solid, reliable information on everything from
where to book a reasonable B&B to how best
to spend 72 hours in a city.”
“In Your Pocket: a cheeky, well-written series
of guidebooks.”
“Most of the traditional guidebook companies
now have decent websites, with plenty of advice
and information either freely available or
downloadable for a fee, but inyourpocket.com
is also well worth a browse. Concentrating on
both well-known and more offbeat European
destinations, its free downloadable city and
country guides are compiled by locals and
regularly updated.”
“The secret of the In Your Pocket guides is
that, unlike many expensive travel guides,
they are written by native English speakers
living in the city they are writing about. That
can lend itself to frank, matter-of-fact advice
about your destination rather than jaded
impressions from world-weary professional
travel writers.”
“With so many European cities now within
easy range of a low-cost airline flight, this website
is a (literally) priceless first stop before
your holiday. The guides are free to download
and print off as pdfs and have information
on where to eat and stay and what to see on
European city breaks.”
“In Your Pocket guides are each written by an
English language writer who lives locally. All
information is also available on the publisher’s
website.”
“The In Your Pocket series of guide booklets
have turned out to be highly useful in avoiding
tourist traps and other travel hazards. A mix
of Lonely Planet and Time Out, they have
become a European publishing phenomenon.”
