SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY at NEW ORLEANS Annual Report 2009-2010
Greetings,
Southern University at New Orleans is pleased to present its 2009-10
Annual Report. We are proud of the numerous accomplishments of
our students, faculty, staff and alumni.
This report highlights many areas, including our efforts to prepare
for reaccreditation in March 2011 by the Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools-Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). We
are also making great strides towards garnering accreditation from
the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business
(AACSB) International, and reaccreditation from the Council on
Social Work Education (CSWE).
Student life greatly improved last year with the opening of our Student
& Faculty Housing Facility. While significant progress was
made on completing our new Information Technology Center,
ground was broken for the College of Business & Public Administration
Building.
U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and New Orleans
own Lisa Jackson, President Barack Obama’s EPA Administrator,
were just two of several notable visitors who came to our
campus, and our alumni continue to make us proud in a variety of
fields.
Thanks again for your continued support of SUNO. I appreciate
your efforts in making 2009-10 another successful year.
Warmest Regards,
Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) primarily serves the educational and cultural needs of the Greater
New Orleans metropolitan area. SUNO creates and maintains an environment conducive to learning and growth,
promotes the upward mobility of students by preparing them to enter into new as well as traditional careers, and
equips them to function optimally in the mainstream of American society.
The university provides a sound education tailored to special needs of students coming to an open admissions
institution and prepares them for full participation in a complex and changing society. It offers a liberal education
directed toward the achievement of higher literacy and broad intellectual development, which in turn serve
as a foundation for training in one of the professions. SUNO provides instruction for working adults of the area
who seek to continue their education in the evening or on weekends.
SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY at NEW ORLEANS Annual Report 2009-2010
University named to the 2009 President‟s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll
Southern University at New Orleans received the news on May 26, 2010 that it was named to the 2009
President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and
Community Service for service to the local communities. The Corporation for National and Community
Service, which administers the annual Honor Roll award, recognized more than 700 colleges and universities
for their impact on issues from poverty and homelessness to environmental justice.
Napolitano surprises SUNO community
U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano visited SUNO on August 17, 2009 during the University Professional
Conference as a follow-up to her March, 2009 visit to New Orleans. During the visit Napolitano made a surprise announcement
that SUNO would receive more than $32 million in funding for the rebuilding
of four buildings on the Park Campus—Brown Hall (Old Science), New
Science, Multipurpose and Clark Hall (Education). In total, more than $92
million in FEMA public assistance has been obligated for SUNO. Napolitano
was joined by Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator
Craig Fugate and Federal Coordinator for Gulf Coast Rebuilding Janet
Woodka to discuss Gulf Coast rebuilding efforts with federal, state and local
partners and make a public assistance announcement.
National Science Foundation commits $1.75 million to SUNO
In September of 2009, SUNO received $1.75 million from the National Science
Foundation (NSF) for the next five years for its Enhancement, Enrichment
and Excellence in Mathematics and Science (E 3 MaS) grant. Key to the
University’s receiving the grant were Senator Mary Landrieu, Jefferson Parish
Public School System Superintendent Dr. Diane Roussel, and Superintendent
Darryl Kilbert of New Orleans Public Schools, who each submitted
letters to the NSF in support of SUNO’s proposal. The funding has allowed
SUNO to increase scholarship offerings for incoming freshmen, and it enhances
the University’s math and science summer enrichment program. The leadership team for the grant consisted of Dr. Joe
Omojola, Dr. Murty Kambhampati and Dr. Carl P. Johnson, all of the Department of Natural Sciences in the College of Arts &
Sciences.
SUNO receives more than $1 million in technology resources
In May of 2010, the University expanded its technology resources through web-based upgrades worth more than $1 million
with CampusEAI Consortium. The expansion allows SUNO to expand its intranet capabilities through myCampus software,
which creates a campus portal and web content management system for higher education institutions. SUNO will be able to
offer students a portal to serve as a one-stop shop for their virtual needs. The CampusEAI Consortium myCampus Portal
Grants are designed to cover the costs of software, hardware and services associated with the implementation of a myCampus
Portal solution, an intranet portal that integrates with online learning, administrative computing and student services systems.
The service offerings include hardware, software, project management, installation
and training costs in the form of a grant.
Big year for the College of Business & Public Administration
In March of 2010, the University community broke ground for the College of
Business & Public Administration building on the Lake Campus. Earlier that
month, the student team of Erica Bilbo and Tonia Simmons-Doakes placed first
in the 2010 Morehouse Business Plan Competition on the University’s first trip
to the competition. The Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team from the University
won Rookie of the Year honors at the 2010 national competition. This
SIFE and the Morehouse teams were moderated by Dr. Louis Mancuso.
Volleyball debuts
The Department of Athletics added volleyball to SUNO’s athletics line-up in
August of 2009. Led by rookie head coach, Wendy Magee, the team made its
first serve on August 29th against Judson College in Marion, Alabama with the
team’s first home game against Spring Hill College on September 4th and the
first win against Judson in The Castle on October 17th in a 3-0 shutout.
ACCREDITATION
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools-Commission
on Colleges (SACSCOC)
The following significant achievements were made in support
of the preparations for SACSCOC on-site visit in March 2011:
All outstanding faculty transcripts were received. Foreign
transcripts for twenty-four faculty were submitted to
World Education Services for evaluation and American
equivalent determination. The University expects to receive
feedback on all cases before the submission of the
Compliance Certification report.
The reports submitted by the Compliance Certification
Subcommittees which had been stored in the Xitracs electronic
reporting software were transferred into the relevant
components of the software and made available to
two consultants to review. The Consultants were Dr.
Ruth Salter, Assistant Vice President for Institutional
Research and Effectiveness at Albany State University,
and E. Dean Montgomery, Executive Vice President and
Chief Academic Officer at Bethune-Cookman University.
In March, 2010 the consultants were invited to campus to discuss
the reports and provide necessary assistance. Following
the visit, the Compliance Certification Subcommittees were restructured.
The re-structured subcommittee updated the report,
ensuring appropriate evidence was provided for each standard.
A mock visit was scheduled from August 1st to 4th to bring
back Dr. Salter to review the updated report. A similar visit
would be scheduled for E. Dean Montgomery whose specialty
is Financial Resources and Facilities.
After a campus-wide process which involved all SUNO stakeholders,
a topic was selected for the Quality Enhancement
Plan (QEP). It is “E-Focused! Enhancing Student Learning
in Online Courses by Improving Institutional Readiness‖. The
QEP Subcommittee was also re-structured to provide a team to
address:
E-Learning and Research,
Publicity and Marketing,
Institutional Capacity (Budget),
Student Online Proficiency Development, and
Faculty Online Proficiency Development Assessment.
The subcommittees continue to work on their topics and submit
formal reports to be collated into a final QEP report.
An SACSCOC-scheduled advisory visit took place from July
12th to 14th. Dr. Rudolph Jackson, Vice President, and
SUNO’s Accreditation Liaison officer at SACSCOC, visited
campus to appraise the status of the two major reports due to
SACSCOC, i.e. the Compliance Certification Report and the
QEP report. Selected Compliance reports were reviewed and
suggestions for improvement made. The QEP Task Force was
assisted in critically working out what students learning outcomes
will be as a result of the QEP. This is critical to the
success of the QEP.
Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business
ACADEMIC PROGRAMS
Health Information Management Systems
After a tedious three-year search, a Program Director was
successfully hired for the B.S. Health Information Management
Systems (HIMS) in March, 2010. The program director
must be certified as a Registered Health Information
Administrator. As a result, Mrs. Andrea Johnson-Mignott
MBA, RHIA, CPC, joined SUNO in March 2010. The Louisiana
Board of Regents has subsequently approved the implementation
of the HIMS program. The program is mandated
to seek accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation
for Health Informatics and Information Management
Education. Enrollment into the program starts formally
in Fall 2010.
the year in view. The two programs were removed from
conditionally approved to full approval category as a result
of satisfactory annual reports that have been submitted by
SUNO. Dr. Pamela Wanga and Dr. Sara Hollis, the respective
directors of the programs, spearheaded the effort.
Certification-Only Program
SUNO’s Certification-Only Programs in Early Childhood
ENROLLMENT
The Fall 2009 enrollment showed another increase from the
Fall 2008 enrollment. The enrollment rose from 3,104 to
3,141 with 3,130 students attending classes in Spring 2010.
SUNO’s recruitment team attended several college and career
fairs, visited numerous high schools across the state, hosted
high schools on campus, and sent out bulk mailings. The
staff also organized and executed phone banks to personally
reach out to returning and prospective students.
The recruitment team took an aggressive approach to promoting
registration periods. Signs and applications for admission
were placed in area businesses as well as mailed to churches.
The team also made numerous home visits to current and
prospective students to remind them of upcoming registrations.
To diversify recruitment efforts, the Division of Student Affairs
and Enrollment Services increased advertising and
hosted special events. The University continued advertising
on television, radio and print media to promote registration,
and the first African American Male Summit took place on
campus. Three hundred and thirty-four African American
Males from the grades 10 to 12 attended the summit.
Some of the summit speakers included: Orleans Parish Sheriff
Marlin Gusman; Orleans Juvenile Court Judge and University
alumna Tammy Stewart; business owner, Robert
Packnet; and former New Orleans Police Department Superintendent
and SUNO alumnus Warren Riley. Dr. Frederick
Humphries, former president of Florida A & M University
and Tennessee State University, also participated in the summit
as well as Dr. Calvin Mackie, author and motivational
speaker. SUNO staffers and alumni, Atty. Wesley Bishop
young men in attendance.
The annual Counselor’s Luncheon has become a key part of
the University’s recruitment efforts. For the third consecutive
year, SUNO hosted a luncheon for high school guidance
counselors. Each the attendance at the luncheon has grown,
exceeding the 2009 total of eighty counselors.
RETENTION
The recruitment team implemented several strategies to retain
the students.
1. Guest speakers from the community visited campus.
2. The retention team conducted seminars for students on
probation and suspension, held one-on-one meetings
with students to assign peer mentors and to have them
sign performance contracts.
3. The retention staff received a list of excessive absentees
from faculty members every Friday. The team then
contacted those students with excessive absentees via
telephone, home visits or mail.
4. Staff members addressed students in the freshmen assembly
classes and the college survival skills classes
with topics on time management, financial management,
academic success strategies, and balancing academics
and social life.
The recruitment and retention teams also visited classrooms
near the end of each semester and encouraged students to be
pre-advised to avoid the long lines.
EARLY START PROGRAM
During the 2009–2010 school year 90 high school students
were enrolled in the Early Start Program. Some of the students
came to SUNO for classes and other high schools opted
to have Early Start classes held on their respective campuses.
RESIDENTIAL LIFE
In January, 2010 SUNO became a residential campus with
the opening of Student & Faculty Housing. Residents enjoy
the option of having one, two and four fully furnished bedroom
apartments to choose from. The units also include full
kitchens plus washers and dryers in each unit. Some of the
apartments even have a view of Lake Pontchartrain. Upon
completion, the University will be able to offer nearly 700
beds.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES
Student life got a significant boost, particularly with the recovery
of the activities quad in front of the Knight Dining
Hall, which once again gained full operation, and the addition
of several elements to student life. SUNO’s Homecoming
Week once came to life with the Coronation rediscovering its
home in The Castle and the return of the Homecoming Parade.
NOTABLE KNIGHTS
Tiffany Magee (B‟97) has taken the role of State Director of Miss Black Louisiana USA, the first to fill the post. Two women
have been crowned Miss Black Louisiana USA under Magee’s direction, and she is in the process of organizing the 2010 pageant.
Arlanda J. Williams (B'03, M'06) made history when she became the first woman to serve as chair of
the Terrebonne Parish Council. Williams is also the youngest person ever elected president of the Louisiana
Police Jury Association's Black Caucus.
Williams
Warren Riley B‟98, M‟00 and Marlon Defillo B‟92, M‟00
In one of the most pivotal and difficult times of New Orleans’ history, the two SUNO graduates served
the New Orleans community to hold the New Orleans Police Department together post-Katrina. Riley
stepped down after serving NOPD and the public honorably as Superintendent. Defillo, the Deputy Superintendent,
was put in charge of the newly formed Field Operations Bureau.
Chris Boudy (B„08), a self-described geek, became one of the city’s most recognized young professionals
in the technology sector. He co-founded NewOrleansTech.net, a web site which offers technology
news, and he co-hosts a technology segment on LaunchPadTV.
PARK CAMPUS
The recovery of 6400 Press Drive continued in a beautiful fashion . . . literally.
The Park Campus underwent a significant facelift during the 2009-
2010 academic year. The buildings were transformed from a mixed bag of
colors to a uniform light brown after being pressure washed.
The Multipurpose Building gets a facelift with the
addition of an outdoor building directory and new
plant life. Photo by Eddie Francis
Trees and shrubberies also adorn the campus after a beautification project
called the Clean Campus Project took place. Blue and gold outdoor directories
were also added outside of each building along with campus ―street
signs‖. As FY2009-2010 came to a close, a project to replace pipes and
repave walkways began, as well.
LAKE CAMPUS
Growth continued on the Lake Campus as a new address was added to the
SUNO directory of properties. Student & Faculty Housing provided a
new University address of 7000 Press Drive when the facility opened
Spring 2010. As a part of the Clean Campus Project, a green play area
was added in front of the residential facility.
Construction continued at 6801 Press Drive, however. As the Information
Technology Center continued to take shape, construction began on the
College of Business & Public Administration building.
The “building boom” took flight on the Lake Campus with the groundbreaking for the Information
Technology Center (upper left) in July of 2009 and the ribbon cutting for the Student & Faculty
Housing complex (left) in February of 2010. ITC photo by Ray Bonnee and ribbon cutting photo by
FUNDRAISING
A major fundraising effort which continued to contribute to facility development
was for the Student Life Center, which has collected more than
$50,000. Southern University at New Orleans also celebrated the 50 th
Anniversary of its opening on Friday, September 18, 2009 at the Hilton Riverside with performances by Stephanie
Jordan and BRW at BASH IV. The event was co-chaired by University alumni Garland and Yvonne Green and
Keith McKendall. The BASH started in 2004 as a signature fundraising event named for SUNO’s Chancellor
Emeritus and first Chancellor, Dr. Emmett W. Bashful, who was the event’s first honoree. In 2005 the event honored
the University’s first dean of its highly regarded School of Social Work, Millie McClelland Charles.
