Why I’m so proud
of my first design
By lee Westwood.
Close House is a perfect
members’ course that is capable
of staging a major tournament in
years to come. For a brand-new
course it is in great condition.
The greens are of a very high
quality and I always look
forward to going back and
playing it again, as I usually do
when I am back in england.
on the front nine the 6th is a
great hole, a downhill drive that
looks tight but has more fairway
over the wall than there looks.
Then it’s a nice downhill second
with out of bounds on the left
and a deep bunker front right.
on the back nine, there is a
great run in the middle. The 12th
is a lovely slightly uphill par 3 to
a sloping green and is followed
by a long par 4 with incredible
views from its wide fairway.
There are lots of bunkers to
avoid of the tee and a stream to
the right of what is a large green.
another good short hole
follows at the 14th, with this one
located in the trees. It’s the
shortest hole on the Colt but you
must find the course’s smallest
green and also clear a stream.
after a short but dangerous
uphill par-4 15th, comes the dogleg
left 16th that plays through a
corridor of trees. You need to
get past the corner to have a
shot to the green then hit over
the cross-bunkers and try to use
the slopes left of the green to
run the ball in. a very good hole.
