Saad-Assaf Nurseries are specialist growers of bulbs whose main focus is on virus-free, true-to-type stocks of

Amaryllis Hippeastrum and Canna Indica. Saad-Assaf is located in Kibbutz Saad in the south of Israel, not far

from the Mediterranean Coast. The company is the largest Canna and Amaryllis grower in Israel and one of

the largest in the world.

Saad-Assaf’s specialty is superior bulb quality. The climatic conditions in their region, combined with the

unique virus-cleaning method and the isolation of the Canna fields, enable them to produce the best Cannas

in the world. Their breeding program began in 2003 as part of a research project in Cannas. Some of the

seedlings harvested were found to be interesting

with dwarf habits and beautiful colors. The

targets of their breeding became: compact

plants, quick growth, self cleaning of wilting

flowers, and special colors of flowers and varied

leaf color.

The best of their breeding efforts can be

seen in their new introduction, Canna

‘Chocolate Sunrise’.

Key Features

• Warm sunshine yellow blooms.

• Tight clumping habit 48” x 36”.

• Great long season of interest.

• Liners are produced from virusfree

TC.

• USDA Zone 7b. (5°F or -14°C).

The award-winning collection of Royal Hawaiian ® Colocasias comes from internationally acclaimed

breeder John Cho, PhD, Plant Pathologist at the University of Hawaii. Dr. Cho brought the best ornamental

characteristics from the taro plants he bred for food production – including disease resistance, tidy

clumping habit and quick production time – to this new

series and has achieved outstanding success.

This series features varieties unlike any available in today’s

market. The Royal Hawaiian ® Colocasias have been bred to

be sturdy garden performers and container specimens. Each

is disease resistant with fabulous foliage and stem interest,

and with their tidy clumping habit would be a welcome

addition in any garden or landscape.

Dr. Cho’s latest introduction, Colocasia ‘Black Coral’ is an

outstanding addition to the series with its deep black glossy

foliage with electric blue veins.

Key Features

• Elegant glossy dark foliage with

electric blue veins.

• Medium height 48” x 36” at

maturity.

• Great impulse plants with a

long seasonal interest.

• Zone 7b. (5°F or -14°C).

Dr. Keith Hammett is New Zealand’s leading professional breeder of ornamental plants. He originally

studied botany at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom and followed with a PhD in plant

pathology. Despite a scientific background and long research history Keith sees the creation of ornamental

plants as an art form comparable to other areas of aesthetic activity.

Dr. Hammett’s Dahlias have won top awards at the Royal Horticultural Society’s trials and were featured in

the Chelsea Flower show. His Dahlias are renowned for their bright vibrant flowers with dark central discs,

and very dark bronze to black foliage and represent a change in breeding direction for Dahlias resulting

from breeding with species of Dahlia not previously used. Dr. Hammett was, in March, awarded the

Reginald Cory Cup by the RHS for his pioneering

work with Dahlias. This is the first time in three

quarters of a century that this award has come

to New Zealand.

This year, PlantHaven is proud to introduce

Dahlia ‘Mystic Wonder’, the newest addition

to his award-winning “Mystic” Series.

Key Features

• Unique velvet textured blooms,

rich blood red in color.

• Glossy mahogany-black foliage,

It was the scent of Daphne odora that first captured the attention of Robin White as a young nurseryman.

He was hooked for life and spent the ensuring years perfecting the art of growing Daphnes, amassing a

wealth of knowledge about the genus along the way and becoming an author on the subject. The cross

which produced Daphne ‘Eternal Fragrance’ was made in 1995 at Blackthorn Nursery in Hampshire,

England. Since the launch in the UK in 2005, the demand for Daphne ‘Eternal Fragrance’ has exceeded

supply. Garden centers and gardeners value the long flowering period and intense fragrance of the

blossom. In Australia the launch in 2010 proved a sell out.

Daphne ‘Eternal Fragrance’ forms a neat round open-branched semi-evergreen shrub with dark-green,

semi-glossy leaves, and intensely fragrant white flowers. When night temperatures become cool the flowers

blush pink-purple. ‘Eternal Fragrance’ exhibits an ability to bear

flowers on its new summer growth, unusual for the species.

Ease of propagation and production by nurserymen, and cultivation

by gardeners, together with good habit and production of fragrant

flowers for 6 to 8 months of the year qualify this plant as among the

best of the Daphne hybrids.

Key Features

• Intensely scented blooms

with unique re-blooming

characteristics.

• Bears flowers on new wood.

• Excellent tight, rounded,

compact habit 2’ x 2’ in 4 years.

• Year round marketing

opportunities.

• USDA Zone 5. (-20°F or -28°C).

Evolving from a gardener to a world-renowned breeder, David Tristram has gained the respect of the

industry. “What prompted me to start breeding was a sense of curiosity” says Tristram, owner of Walberton

Nursery in England. Breeding and introducing new plants to the industry plays a large role at Walberton.

David has been extremely busy over the last 50 years with his breeders paint brush creating some super

world class garden plants. David’s goal is to combine everything that is

important in a great new plant — form, vigor, health and producibility.

PlantHaven has been honored to represent many distinguished

successes of the Walberton group which include Spiraea Magic Carpet,

Coreopsis Flying Saucers, Lavender Silver Edge, Scabiosa Butterfly Blue,

Scabiosa Pink Mist, Erysimum Fragrant Sunshine, Cytisus Amber Elf,

Crocosmia Walberton Yellow, Crocosmia Bright Eyes, Crocosmia Miss

Scarlet, Digitalis Gold Crest, Gaura Pink Fountain, Gaura Snow Fountain,

Hellebore Ivory Prince, Hellebore Rosemary, Lysimachia Golden

Alexander, and Euphorbia Rudolph to name but a few!

This year PlantHaven is delighted to introduce David’s newest variety,

Erysimum ‘Fragrant Star’.

The partnership of Richard Read and Keith Lintott formed Realflor in 2007 to specialize in creating

an intensive breeding program to introduce new varieties in character and color of a selected range of

herbaceous perennial plants for the world market. Realflor nursery is situated near Chichester in Southern

England and benefits from some of the best climate conditions in the U.K.

Richard Read helped develop one of the largest U.K. chrysanthemum cuttings production companies in the

Canary Islands for export to Europe. He managed a very successful retail garden center operation in the U.K.

for over 25 years, where he bred Gaillardia Fanfare, one of the most successful gaillardias sold on the world

market. Keith Lintott has spent over 40 years in horticulture

specializing in plant health, selection, and breeding. For over

30 years he worked for one of the largest chrysanthemum

companies in Europe.

The combination of Keith’s breeding experience and

Richards’s retail and selection expertise will no doubt result in

the introduction of many outstanding varieties in the future,

which for the coming year will include Gaillardia ‘Fanfare

Blaze’, the first of a new and exciting range of Gaillardias.

While a student at University of North Carolina, Philip Dark met the late J.C. Raulston, of the J.C. Raulston

Arboretum, who, along Dr. Michael Dirr of the University of Georgia inspired his breeding efforts.

Originally a landscaper, Philip began breeding hybrids after attending a seminar on propagation. His

objective was a Gardenia that was cold hardy with large double blooms. After 10 years of crossbreeding

he created Gardenia ‘Crown Jewel’, a highly fragrant, white dwarf that blooms twice a year, survives

cold winters and flowers prolifically. ‘Crown Jewel’ combines two breeds, the Kleim’s Hardy and the Chuck

Hayes, and marries their best features. The plant has

the Kleim’s Hardy’s dwarf size and prolific flowering,

and the cold hardiness and double-bloom of the

Chuck Hayes.

Philip is the owner of Oakmont Nursery and is

currently working on new hybrids and assessing their

commercial viability. His current breeding work is

focused on creating distinctive cold hardy gardenias

with double blooms and disease and insect resistance.

Key Features

• A whole zone hardier than

traditional Gardenia augusta

hybrids.

• Heavy blooming. With fabulous

fragrant pure white double

blooms.

• Compact spreading habit. Only

Breeder Steve Eggleton is the General Manager, Plant Growers Australia Pty Ltd., an industry accredited,

innovative wholesale nursery near Melbourne, Australia. PGA is well known for its regular introduction of new

and interesting varieties and has allowed Steve to follow his passion for breeding ornamental plants. His team

has a combined wealth of diverse horticultural experience and ideas to draw upon for breeding projects.

Breeding efforts encompass a diverse portfolio of genetics looking for opportunities to introduce both new

and exciting plants and/or improve on existing varieties to the horticultural market place. They now have

many successful, internationally introduced varieties and look to focus on continued quality introductions in

the future. Varieties like the Lavender Ruffles

and Gaura Passionate series have since

been exported to the world and now have

international success.

Steve’s new introduction, Gaura ‘Passionate

Rainbow Petite’ is a stunning selection

with a tight, compact mounding habit,

exceptionally long flowering period, and great

garden performance.

Ryoji Irie became interested in biology at the age of 13 in Kyoto, Japan. Kyoto flourished in art, culture, and

music attracting many international students. Growing up in this special energetic place was a great influence

and inspired his interests in music, painting, and cinema. His grandmother, a textile fabric artist, also inspired

his creativity and he became fascinated with the floral patterns she created in her textile designs. In school

he saw Poinsettia in the greenhouse and was captured by the beautiful red color thinking of Poinsettia as

the Queen of Red. In springtime when Hydrangeas bloomed he thought them the Kings of Blue.

Ryoji attended university in Kyushu to learn both biotechnology and

breeding, and studied plant evolution. Along with his professor, he

researched tissue culture mediums and became instrumental in the

creation of new breeding technologies.

Ryoji has partnered with one of Europe’s premier Hydrangea

growers for the commercial evaluation of his hybrids. Final selections

are propagated in Europe prior to distribution for further trails

around the world.

His creative spirit and vision will continue to celebrate this species.

Pieris ‘Katsura’ was an accidental discovery, on a wooded hillside near a Shinto Temple in Japan as a

sport of the parent plant Pieris japonica. The discoverer, Yoshimichi Hiroshe, was a collector of plants and

author of numerous books on the subject of variegated plants. He observed the unique qualities of ‘Katsura’

and selected it for its continuous new growth through spring and summer, large glossy leaves that are

wine-red in color before turning green with age, and rose-colored flowers.

In late spring, blooms cascade over green foliage, and new growth afterwards comes in glossy red again.

The elegant flowers, born on rose-colored racemes are lilac-white with a lilac skirt. The habit of this broad

upright bush is compact and reaches 4’ to 5’ high in 10 years.

Pieris ‘Katsura’ thrives in well drained, humus rich, lime free

soil similar to its native mountain forest habitat in sun or light

shade. ‘Katsura’ makes a stunning addition to a Japanese

themed garden.

Pieris ‘Katsura’ was awarded a Gold Medal at Plantarium

2003 and was awarded an Award of Golden Merit by the

Dutch Royal Horticultural Society.
