From the Director:
Where did that summer holiday go? It
seems as though we were just waving
good-bye to the buses pulling out on the
last day of school in June, and here we
are back into school routines in August.
And what a spectacular way we experienced
to celebrate the end of the first
week of school! Congratulations to the
Parent Association! Their 1st Annual
Back to School BBQ was a huge, huge
success! The hundreds of people who
attended can testify what a great kickoff
it was to the school year. Thank you
one and all!
Those of us who worked at school during
the summer, though, know exactly
how much of our time was used. . .in
giving tours of the school to many of our
new families. We have experienced a
tremendous increase in the number of
families choosing ISS as their school
community home in Stavanger. We have
many new NATO families and new oil
company families. The delightful result
is that we are transitioning in over one
hundred new students to ISS!
So welcome, welcome, welcome to both
new families and returning families. We
thank you for entrusting your children
with us here at school. Once again we
have been impressed by the students’
quick willingness to slip back into purposeful
routines here at school. I
believe the students love being on holiday,
but also love the opportunity to
“come back to work” here at school.
Ten minutes into the first class on the
first day, all seemed to be back to normal.
Thank you for sending them to us
with such a willing attitude to learn.
And let me direct a special message to
all the new families who have chosen
ISS. Let us help you in any way to make
the transition as smooth as possible to
the school. Don’t be shy about asking
questions—we are here to help make
your transition as smooth as possible.
We also welcome our wonderful group
of new employees who have quickly
immersed themselves into the life of the
school. You will have an opportunity to
meet our new employees as the days
pass by and I believe you will be very
impressed by them and their abilities to
teach your children.
I would also like to send out a special
thanks to our wonderful Pa r e n t
Association. What an ambitious and
marvelous calendar of events they have
drawn up for the year! Starting out with
the Whole School BBQ and the many
other activities designed to benefit our
school community, they are a ve ry
industrious group. It was my privilege
to attend the first PA Board meeting of
the year and I marvel at what they have
planned. They hope to have many people
volunteering to help throughout the
year, so bring a smile and join in!
High School/Middle School New s
Message from the principal
Welcome to all ISS families! We have
had a great start to the school year and
the students and teachers have been getting
to know each other and the work
has begun. It was good to open the doors
and have our hallways filled with students
again. Both middle and high
school students have entered the school
each day knowing that they are here to
learn and make some lasting friendships.
This year we welcomed 40 new
students to middle and high school and
our returning students have done a wonderful
job of making them welcome.
Thank you to everyone.
learned about the different ways they
l e a rn and how to strengthen their
approaches to their work by using strategies
that suit them best. Having this
information will allow students to determine
how they might best approach project
work, or prepare for a test – a valuable
tool for success!
Our first week was marked by two very
successful events; many thanks to the
Parent Association for their back to
school BBQ for the whole school, foll
owed by the high school Student
Council “Mexcellent” dance attended
by 88 students, and yes, they did dance
round their hats!!!
High School news
Our first high school assembly welcomed
everyone, but in particular, those
new to the school, students and teachers
alike. During our assembly students
were able to hear about a number of
ex t r a c u rricular activities that will be
available to them during the course of
the year and it was revealed that this
year’s high school play will be “Return
to the Forbidden Planet”. Auditions are
in their final stages as I write this and
the cast list will be known before the
end of this week.
The first day continued with students
meeting in grade-level advisory groups
to discuss the school year, expectations
and to take an inventory of their learning
styles. From this inventory students
Stu Co elections this week and next will
determine who will join President Mike
Taylor and Vice-President Greg
Matthews on the Council. The students
and teachers appreciate the work and
contribution that Stu Co makes to the
high school and we all look forward to
an exciting year of dances, activities and
fun. Full details of the new Student
Council will appear in the nex t
All classes take place at the same time
so there is a great deal of flexibility for
movement within classes.
Also for the first time this year, all middle
school students will learn French or
Spanish (last year the native Norwegian
students could not do this). The classes
have been organized by level of competency
rather than by grade. This means
that there may be students of mixed
grade levels, but similar ability.
In homeroom, the main focus has been
on the 'settling in' process. All students
have been issued with an agenda (for
organizational purposes) and they all
have an individual locker (for book,
binders etc.) and they share another
locker (for other items e.g. a PE bag).
All students should now have a lock
(either combination of key) on their
locker.
All students are advised to keep their
agenda up to date and organized. They
are encouraged to write in all assignments
(and the due date). In addition,
they will receive important dates and
events to put in their agendas. I would
encourage you to take a regular look at
your son/daughter's agenda. The ISS
agenda should not be used as a personal
journal.
We will also have 'surprise' locker
check days....just to make sure that no
undesirable items are lost in the back
somewhere!
Our homeroom theme this month is, not
s u rp r i s i n g ly, entitled ‘ O rga n i z a t i o n
and Time Management’ and students
will be invo l ved in discussions and
activities related to this theme. In addition,
we will also focus on note-taking
skills and study skills.
MS Student Council – 2005/2006
Middle school students in grades 7 and 8
h ave been encouraged to campaign for a
position on the exe c u t ive committee of the
middle school student council. There are
four positions ava i l a ble: P re s i d e n t, Vi c e
P re s i d e n t, S e c retary a n d Tre a s u re r.
Student council (StuCo) is responsible for
o rganizing many of the middle school
events throughout the ye a r. Students wh o
wish to be part of the exe c u t ive committee
will be campaigning all next week and
their campaign will culminate in indiv i d u a l
speeches (date still to be decided). All MS
students will then cast their vote. In addition
to the four exe c u t ive committee members,
there will be nine homeroom re p re-
MIDDLE SCHOOL HOUSES
The MS students have already started
the progress of suggesting new house
names for the year. The middle school
has three houses and each house is made
up of an equal number of students from
grades 6, 7 and 8, which encourages
cross- grade level communication and
interaction. During each quarter, students
will have the opportunity to participate
in a variety of activities, community
and service projects in order to
gain house points. The first opportunities
for MS students to earn house points
will be in a ‘Capture the Flag’ competition
during school and at the Beach
Clean up which will take place on
S a t u rd ay, September 17th at Sola
beach from 10:00 until 11:30 (more
details to follow).
MS BBQ
As you read this first edition of the
Informer, your son or daughter is probably
enjoying themselves at the first middle
school event of the year….the MS
‘ Welcome Back to School BBQ’.
Many thanks to our new middle liaison,
Julia Palmer for her organization of this
event. The MS is a busy place and we
have many activities and events planned
for the year. I will keep you informed!
MS Open House
The next event for your calendar will be
the middle school Open House which
will take place on Wednesday, August
31st starting at 6:30pm. The primary
school Open House will be on
September 6th and the high school
Open House is on September 7th.
This is an important opportunity for you
to meet your son/daughter’s teachers and
to hear an outline of the courses, assignments
and expectations for your child
during the school year.
School Photographs
The school photographer will be here
the week beginning September 5th. All
middle school students will have an
individual picture, a homeroom picture
and a grade picture taken. Details
on which days your son/daughter will
have their picture taken will be sent
home soon. (See table on page 15).
It is such a privilege to walk through the
halls and visit classrooms. Your children
have their days dedicated to learning.
Please give them credit for the fine job
they are doing, focusing on their tasks
and working well together. The teachers
have worked to create safe and secure
learning environments. Within hours, a
group of children becomes a class, a
group dedicated to learning and working
together. Transition from the crowded
feeling of parents and children separating
on the first day of classes to engaging
in an effective learning group is an
important part of every school year.
Credit for this transition lies in teaching
skills that make most of us marvel—
How do they do that? Credit also goes to
a culture of interest in learning from
home, from parents and children. This
culture of learning seeps into the foundation
for motivation. Similar to
researchers such as Collins (1991) have
found about workers, I’ve noticed that
children interested in learning don’t
really need motivation to learn. They
need to stay around people that let them
go about the tasks of learning. Their
only real distraction is anyone uninterested
in learning. Thanks for being part
of building this culture of learning at
ISS.
To give you an understanding of the way
things work and the basics of the curriculum
at ISS, an Open House for parents
is schedule starting at 18:30 in the
L ovelace Theater at ISS. At 18:30,
teachers of specialist areas that all children
see will give short presentations. At
19:30, class teachers, or homeroom
teachers, will offer information sessions
particular to children within each grade
level. Teachers will give you information
that helps tie up loose ends and
makes learning more effective for your
children. To help ensure you have an
opportunity to visit the class of each of
your children, the sessions are repeated
at 20:00. Parents of students in Grade 5
will get additional information about
band at 19:55 or 20:00 in one of the fifth
grade homerooms. Open House for parents
of students in Pre-School and Pre-K
will be from 18:00 to 18:30 in the Pre-
School Room, 15.
Because we realize that sometimes it has
been complicated to find childcare so
parents can attend Open House, I would
like to relieve that anxiety for you. If it
helps your situation to bring your children
along, please do so. We will
arrange care for them while you attend
Open House information sessions
b e t ween 18:30 and 20:30. You may
bring your children to the cafeteria
between 18:30 and 20:30. Please do not
bring your children to the classrooms on
this evening as we would like to convey
information to parents in the most effective
manner possible.
School photographs will be taken during
dates and times for each class are listed
appreciate your help and interest.
I encourage you to attend the Parent
Association Leisure Fair of activities at
17:30, August 30, in the ISS cafeteria.
Getting your children involved in a reas
o n a ble amount of local activ i t i e s
(scouting, a local sports club, music
lessons, crafts, a special interest group
or a school-based activity) helps your
children develop habits that make them
healthy life-long learners. During the
next weeks, we will be canvassing your
children to consider need for additional
activities offered by ISS teachers.
The summer still has some long
IFG – SWEC – YEPA
International Friendship Group
At ISS there are three active student groups which are concerned with
local and global issues relating to human and animal life and the environment.
The idea for the International Friendship Group (IFG) came in 1992 from a
10 th grade student (Kirsty Kemp) who wanted to encourage school support
for deserving causes both overseas and locally. The main aim of this group is
to raise awareness of different needs and problems and then to do
something constructive about them. IFG is open to students in 9 th – 12 th
grades.
The primary school group Show We Care (SWEC), open to students in 3 rd
– 5 th grades, was formed in the spring of 2001 when ISS started the
process of becoming a Miljøfyrtårn (green) school. These children wanted
to do something to help children, families, animals and the environment.
The middle school group Youth for the Environment, People and Animals
(YEPA) was formed in September 2003. In May 2005 a group of four
students representing YEPA took part in the Young Agenda Conference in
Åsenhallen, Sola. Over 500 children aged 11 – 13 from 30 countries
worldwide came together to share their ideas and visions for a better
future. It was a very exciting and uplifting experience.
IFG, SWEC and YEPA meet weekly throughout the school year. This is
when ideas are put forward for discussion and when plans are made for
forthcoming events. The students are encouraged to think of different
kinds of events and projects which fulfill the groups’ aims. Some charities
are supported regularly; students may recommend others. An effort is
made to ensure that events and projects are based on recycling, individual
and group effort, compassion for the sick and needy, giving pleasure, helping
the community and student initiative.
These groups are happy to share with you that over Kr.104, 000 was raised
during the 2005 – 2006 school year. Be sure to read our pages in the
Informer and keep up to date with our events during the next school year.
Many exciting things are being planned!
