From the Director:
Now that the dark days have arrived, I’d
like to remind all parents to see that their
children are dressed wisely. Reflectors,
reflective vests, and a variety of other products
are available to allow your child to be
seen. Over the years, the ingenuity and
style of “safe clothing” has expanded and
students can look cool and safe at the same
time. And while you are choosing reflective
clothing for your children, please
choose some for yourselves as well. Adults
need to been seen on these dark days as
well!
In the past week, eighteen ISS employees
traveled down to the ECIS (European
Council of International Schools), conference
in Hamburg, Germany. They joined
over 2,000 other international educators
from all over the world. Special congratulations
go to Mrs. Heather Melhus, the head
of the ECIS Wellness Committee who presented
two workshop sessions on the use of
portable cardiac defibrillators in schools.
ISS has made a commitment not just to our
own students and staff here in Stavanger,
but also to spread the important word on
defibrillator training throughout the international
school community.
We also congratulate Dr. Len Duevel
who was elected vice-chair of the ECIS
Curriculum Coordinator’s committee.
While in Hamburg, I had discussions
with several professors from the University
of Bath in England, about the possibility of
setting up ISS as a center for their
Advanced Courses in Education
Programme, leading to a MA in Education.
The Bath system uses a series of modules
that can be taken in Bath during the summer,
but also at a satellite location. Similar
programmes have been in place for some
time in Brussels, Dusseldorf, Bangkok, and
other locations. A minimum of twelve students
would be required to establish
Stavanger as a location for the modules,
which would cover a four day period during
the school’s fall and spring holidays.
The classes would take place at ISS. I presume
an offering of this type may well be
of interest to some parents in our community
as well as ISS staff members, and if
you would like additional information,
please contact me. We have a number of
our staff members who have completed, or
are in process of completing degrees
through the University of Bath and the
institution has an excellent reputation.
A sad note that I shared in my address as
ECIS Board Chair at the opening session in
Hamburg, was the word that the international
school community had been touched
by the recent bombings in Istanbul. Roger
Short, the UK Consul General in Istanbul
who lost his life last week was a member of
the Board of Governors of the British
International School in Istanbul. He created
the school motto, “Knowledge Surpasses
All Limitations.” Truly a ‘hero of international
education.’
Re: Exam Stress
The High School exams period will run from Friday, 12 December to Wednesday,
17 December. Students’ anticipation of this important time of year often leads to
feelings of anxiety – or what is commonly known as exam stress. Exam stress is the
mentally or emotionally disruptive or upsetting condition that occurs in response to
the test-taking situation. This state of extreme difficulty is capable of affecting
physical health, usually characterized by increased heart rate, a rise in blood pressure,
muscular tension, irritability, and depression (Stress Management for Life).
Luckily for students, there is a lot that can be done to help cope with stressful feelings.
One good starting point in the quest to manage stress is accepting the notion
that a bit stress can be a good thing. Think about it –stress keeps your body alert,
helps you to focus, try harder, and perform at an optimum level.
Though there are various approaches to stress reduction, D. Hamilton’s A Guide
for Maximum Success and Minimum Stress nicely summaries some useful coping
strategies that may be of assistance as we enter this challenging time of the school
year.
General Exam Stress-Busting Tips:
• Believe in yourself. If you prepare for the exams properly you should do fine,
meaning that there is no need to worry excessively.
• Don't try to be perfect. It's great to succeed and reach for the stars. But keep
things in balance. If you think that "anything less than A+ means I've failed"
then you are creating mountains of unnecessary stress for yourself. Aim to do
your best but recognize that none of us can be perfect all of the time.
• Take steps to overcome problems. If you find you don't understand some of
your course material, getting stressed out won't help. Instead, take action to
address the problem directly by seeing your teacher, counselor, or seeking help
from a classmate.
• Don't keep things bottled up. Confiding in someone you trust and who will be
supportive is a great way of alleviating stress and worry.
• Keep things in perspective. The exams might seem like the most crucial thing
right now, but in the grand scheme of things they are only a small part.
Tips for the study/test preparation period:
• Leave plenty of time to study so that you don't get into a situation of having to
do last minute cramming. This approach will help to boost your confidence and
reduce any pre-exam stress as you know you have prepared well.
• Develop a timetable so that you can track and monitor your progress. Make sure
you allow time for fun and relaxation so that you avoid burning out. As soon as
you notice your mind is losing concentration, take a short break. You will then
come back to your studies refreshed.
• Experiment with several alternative study techniques so that the time spent is
more fun and your motivation is high.
• Don't drink too much coffee, tea and carbonated drinks; the caffeine will 'hype'
you and make your thinking less clear. Eat healthily and regularly; your brain
will benefit from the nutrients.
• Regular moderate exercise will boost your energy, clear your mind and reduce
any feelings of stress.
• Try out some yoga, tai chi or relaxation techniques. They will help to keep you
feeling calm and balanced, improve your concentration levels and help you to
sleep better.
Tips for the exam itself:
• Avoid panic. It's natural to feel some exam nerves prior to starting the exam, but
getting excessively nervous is counterproductive as you will not be able to
think as clearly.
• The quickest and most effective way of eliminating feelings of stress and panic
is to close your eyes and take several long, slow deep breaths. Breathing in this
way calms your whole nervous system. Simultaneously you could give yourself
some mental pep-talk by mentally repeating "I am calm and relaxed" or "I
know I will do fine".
• If your mind goes blank, don't panic! Panicking will just make it harder to recall
information. Instead, focus on slow, deep breathing for about one minute. If
you still can't remember the information then move on to another question and
return to this question later.
• After the exam don't spend endless time criticizing yourself for where you think
you went wrong. Often our own self assessment is far too harsh. Congratulate
yourself for the things you did right, learn from the bits where you know you
could have done better, and then move on.
Wishing you inner peace during exam time,
Thoughts from the Middle and
High School principal
It’s almost December and the holidays
are clearly in sight, as is a new year,
2004! It’s not uncommon for that to be a
time for making those resolutions. One
of those resolutions might be to become
a person of positive influence.
Teachers and parents know all too
well that children learn by watching, listening
and then doing. So the integrity
of the model is crucial to the learning
outcome. It follows that to have a positive
impact on the lives of others "a person
of influence has integrity with
people."
Maxwell and Dornan write, "The need
for integrity today is perhaps as great as
it has ever been. And it is absolutely
essential for anyone who desires to
become a person of influence. Integrity
is the foundation upon which many
other qualities are built, such as
respect, dignity, and trust. Integrity
commits itself to character over personal
gain, to people over things, to
service over power, to principle over
convenience, to the long view over the
immediate."
Students at ISS are encouraged to
challenge themselves in these ways
through the homeroom advisory program
in Middle School, service activities
in both Middle and High School,
and attention to respecting themselves,
each other and their environment.
Developing integrity takes time as it
requires the maturation of the concepts
of morals and ethics. Maxwell and
Dornan state,"Developing integrity is
‘an inside job’" and then go on to deal
with three common misconceptions
about integrity:
1. “Integrity is not determined by
circumstances". "…you are
responsible for your choices. Your
circumstances are as responsible for
your character as a mirror is for your
looks. What you see only reflects
what you are."
2. “Integrity is not based on credentials".
"Character comes from who
we are, not what we are."
“Credentials are transient, …turn the
focus to rights, …add value to only
one person, …look to past accomplishments,
…can only get you in
the door. Character is permanent,
…keeps the focus on responsibilities,
…adds value to many people,
…builds a legacy for the future and
gets you in the door and keeps you
there."
3. “Integrity is not to be confused
with reputation”. While reputation
might be more easily recognized in
the short term, "a good reputation
only exists because it is a reflection
of a person’s character". It really is
who you are when nobody’s looking.
These are the challenges for our students
as they grow. Choosing to do ‘the
right thing’ based on integrity will not
always be the popular choice, and certainly
not the easiest or most comfort-
able route. But the accumulation of
those decisions will build strong foundations
for a person of integrity and
influence. Integrity is not always the
easiest concept to explain and so here
are five questions Maxwell and Dornan
provide to help the reader reflect on
what’s going on ‘inside’, at the building
site of character. Take some time to
think about these and maybe discuss
them at home.
Questions to help you measure your
integrity
1. How well do I treat people from
whom I can gain nothing?
2. Am I transparent with others?
3. Do I role-play based on the
person(s) I’m with?
4. Am I the same person when I’m in
the spotlight as I am when I’m
alone?
5. Do I quickly admit wrongdoing
without being pressed to do so?
Ultimately, rising from the respect
shown to others and the high standards
maintained, the prize for those people
with integrity is the trust of others,
allowing the potential for positive influence
to increase greatly.
person of influence: how to positively
impact the lives of others John C.
HS News and Events
Looking back over the previous two
weeks there is much to report on and
much to be proud of.
The College Fair was very successful
for students and college representatives
alike. Students gathered many ‘inside
tips’ from the people who ‘build classes
for their colleges’ each year, while the
representatives met with our students
and were excited by the calibre and
overall level of interest. Lots of good
questions were asked that afternoon.
The following evening the HS ISTA
group performed their piece ’58 degrees
north’ and the audience (and the cast)
were simply blown away! A wonderful
performance of student created and
directed work was received with great
enthusiasm by the assembled ISTA
schools participating in the event.
Meanwhile the MUN group were
attending their first Iberian Model
United Nations in Lisbon. Their preparation
and performance throughout the
meeting was commended by the organizer
describing them as "outstanding--
well behaved, cooperative, excellent in
debate, and very well informed." They
have been invited to return next year and
to provide student as a debate chair,
such was the quality of their contribution.
Looking on to the coming weeks, the
end of the semester and the school
examinations are on the horizon. My
thanks to Dr. Cameron for ‘heading
them off at the pass’ with his timely
advice about managing exam stress.
Many congratulations to everyone,
teachers, parents and students, involved
in the ISTA festival. The weekend was
a tremendous success and the visiting
schools had a terrific time. Our students
were the first group to perform on
Friday evening and they certainly took
my breath away! Tumultuous applause
proved that I wasn’t just the ‘proud principal’
in my reaction to the piece.
Thanks and buckets of bouquets to Ms
Landis for her work with the students
and to her and the team of teachers and
parents that helped with the organization
of the event.
We will be welcoming back Mr
Keereman and Mrs Febvay next week,
along with the 7th and 8th grade
Spanish students, and looking forward
to hearing of their exchange experiences.
By all accounts there has been
lots of fun and learning in Barcelona
this week.
The talent of our students knows no
end, and the winter concert will be the
next opportunity for the students to
share their talents with us - a wonderful
way to get into the holiday spirit.
The "thoughts from the principal"
article this week may provide some food
for thought with your students, particularly
the ten questions that help identify
integrity. We are all aware of the need to
continue to help students develop an
understanding of ‘respect’ and the way
we treat each other and our environment.
Destructive behaviour, whether it
is a personal jibe at someone, or damaging
property, creates a negative atmosphere
and it is our responsibility as
teachers and parents to help young people
realize that they have a significant
part to play in creating a positive atmosphere
by their actions. As the saying
goes, "Middle Schooler, a work in
The Informer
Our Primary School students are
working hard, preparing for the Winter
Concert on Thursday, December 11th
at 7:00 p.m. (The students need to be at
school by 6:30 p.m.) Our kindergarten
through fifth grade students will be performing.
This is always a wonderful
event and we encourage all families to
attend.
On December 5th, our Dutch students
will present a traditional Dutch
"Sinterklaas Fest". Sinterklaas and his
helpers will be here.
The Primary School students will
travel to the Soma Farm on December
4th (K-2) and December 12th (3-5).
They will have hands-on experiences
with the animals, go caroling, meet the
Norwegian Santa Claus (Julenissen),
play in the straw, and also taste a bit of
Norway with warm rice pudding and
julegrøt.
December 9th at 8:30 is our Santa
Lucia celebration. Some of our primary
school children will be dressed in white,
carrying candles and singing the traditional
Lucia song. The procession will
visit all elementary classes and hand out
buns. An explanation of this tradition is
mentioned in the Norwegian News following
the PS School News.
Also on December 9th, "Santa Claus"
will visit the primary school students
when they will have their picture taken
with him. The Parent Association will
be donating these pictures and give them
the week.
FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS AND
PARENTS – An informational meeting
will be held Monday, December 15th at
7:00p.m. for our Fifth grade experience
at Gullingan Leirskole. This trip is
scheduled for January 19th-23rd. We
will discuss the program and activities
planned along with supply list and cost,
and of course, questions and/or concerns
you may have. This year the students
will be having a "skiing experience"
along with orienteering, nature study
and outdoor play. Should you not be
able to attend this meeting, we will be
sending home a summary of this information.
(Fourth grade will have an
information meeting later in the school
year.)
The ISS Primary School Reading
Class Challenge, Soar into Reading,
sponsored by the Parent Association
ends November 28th. An incredible
amount of reading is going on in the
Primary School. Students are anxiously
watching their grade-level soar.
Monday, December 1st is the last day
for the student to turn in their reading
sheets.
The Parent Tip for this week comes
from the National Parent Information
Network with information from an article
(The Respectful Child) written by
Elizabeth Pantly.
Webster defines "respect" as …, "to
show honor or esteem for. To treat with
deference and regard." How can we
raise respectful children?
1. Teach through actions
"Do as I say, not as I do" sounds like a
fun idea, but as a parenting tool it rarely
(if ever) works. You are your child’s
first and most important teacher. Just as
children learn to talk by listening to us
talk, they learn how to treat others by
following our lead. Watch how you
treat, not only your own children, but
other people you come in contact with
during the day. What are you teaching
your kids?
2. Teach more than just manners.
"Thank you" can be said as a polite compliment,
or can be said with sarcasm and
attitude fit for a back alley. When we
teach our children manners, we must
also discuss the not-so-obvious details –
such as using a polite tone of voice, and
using real words (such as yes instead of
"uh huh"). These are not things our children
are born knowing. We need to
teach these important facets of good
manners.
3. Provide positive and consistent discipline.
Parents with knowledge and skills to
tackle the job of raising children will
find it easier to raise respectful children.
When you have good parenting skills
you will find that discipline is an easy
task. This means reading a few good
books or taking parenting a class to help
maintain control of the parent/child relationship
in a way that fosters respect in
the family.
You may find a selection of excellent
resources in our High School Library.
Mrs. Donna Seymour will be glad to
assist you in choosing and checking out
a reference book.
4. Be firm but fair.
Letting children get away with bad
behavior only breeds more of the same.
Make sure your child knows the rules of
the family and that you discipline appropriately
when rules are broken. Firm
and fair discipline is not haphazard and
does not change depending on your
mood. It requires a consistency that
your children can count on. (They may
not like it, but they can count on it!) It
is not the severity of a consequence that
makes it effective, but the certainty of it.
When your children know exactly what
your expectations are, and that there will
be a penalty for failing to meet those
expectations, they will more likely
behave in an appropriate manner.
5. Praise good behavior.
Your praise and encouragement have a
tremendous impact on your child.
"Praise" messages are not all verbal
either. An "OK" hand signal, a wink, a
smile, a hug all speak volumes to a child
who has just done something right.
These positive messages reinforce a
child’s goodness, and encourage more
of the same positive behavior.
Sankta
Lucia
Sankta Lucia –
Lucia means light,
and Scandinavians
treasure it especially
during the darkest
months of the
year. Legend has it
Lucia was a young woman in Italy who
was martyred for her faith and love for
the poor during the 3rd Century. She is
celebrated throughout Scandinavia with
a light procession on the morning of
December 13th.
Coinciding with Santa Lucia is the
old, norse LUSSI NATT. Norwegians
used to believe the darkest night of the
year to be between the 12th and the 13th
of December. Evil spirits were about
and people stayed indoors. Baking was
to be done prior to this evening.
Today we find the Lucia tradition in
homes and schools around Norway. At
ISS, children from 2nd grade will be
dressed in white, carry candles and sing
the traditional Lucia song. The procession
will visit all primary classes and
hand out boller (buns). Due to scheduling
challenges we will celebrate Lucia
on the morning of December 9th.
Over time, St. Nicolas became the
12th and 13th centuries, Holland built
no fewer than 23 churches dedicated to
St. Nicholas, of which many are still
standing. Amsterdam adopted St.
The story of Sinterklaas
The annual celebration of Sinterklaas, or
St. Nicolas, is an event which has been
celebrated for many centuries. It is celebrated
in most Roman Catholic countries
and is mainly a celebration for
small children.
St. Nicolas lived from 271 A.D. until
December 6 in 342 (some sources say
343) in Myra in Turkey. He came from
a wealthy family, but when his parents
died because of an epidemic, he distributed
his wealth among the poor and
became a priest. Later he became the
Archbishop of Myra, and the stories of
his good deeds were told across the
Mediterranean. Desperate sailors who
called upon the Good Bishop to ease
stormy seas were heard, and prison
walls started to crumble when victims of
persecution prayed to him. St. Nicolas
saved young children from a butcher’s
knife and dropped dowries into shoes of
penniless maidens.
Now, Sinterklaas lives in Spain, all
Dutch children know that. Sinterklaas
spends most of the year in Spain recording
the behaviour of all children in a big
red book, while his helper Black Peter
stocks up presents which will be delivered
during the night between December
5 and 6.
During the first weeks of November,
Sinterklaas gets on his white horse,
Peter (Piet) swings a huge sack full of
gifts over his shoulder, and the three of
them go on board of a steamship heading
to the Netherlands. Around mid-
November they arrive in a harbour town
-a different one every year- where they
are formally greeted by the Mayor and a
delegation of citizens, and welcomed by
many children. Their parade through
town is being watched on television by
the whole country and marks the beginning
of the Sinterklaas season.
The old bishop and his mate are suddenly
everywhere at once. At night they ride
across Holland’s rooftops and
Sinterklaas listens through the chim-
FREDSLYS
What's that?
It's Norway's most extensive event
promoting world peace and it's arranged
by REDD BARNA (Save the Children)
'Redd Barna's Fredslys started up
in 1994 when that year's General
Secretary, Tor Elden, had the idea for a
'Peace Action' for children. There were
two arrangements that year, one in Oslo
and the other in 'Kardemomme By' in the
Animal Park in Kristiansand. Children
paraded with fire torches in both places
as a symbol of World Peace. When the
torches eventually went out the idea of a
continuously burning flame was born.
A large boulder with a natural hollow in
it was placed in Kardemomme By. This
is known as the Children's Peace
Monument. The flame was lit on the
1st of September 1996 and will burn
until no child is suffering the terrors of
war. Around the flame are placed smaller
stones with the names of countries
where war is still rife. When war is over
in a particular country the stone is
removed. When there are no more
stones the flame can be extinguished.'
REDD BARNA's FREDSLYS
begins every year on the 1st of
December at the Children's Peace
Monument in the Animal Park in
Kristiansand. It ends in Oslo on the
10th of December, the day the Nobel
Peace Prize is awarded. The
'Fredsfakkeltog' (torchlight procession
for peace) congregates outside the
Rådhus (town hall) in Oslo and the winner
of the Nobel Peace Prize is presented
with the last of a succession of torches
which have carried the Peace Flame
from Kristiansand.
The idea behind REDD BARNA's
Fredslys is to allow children to
express their desire for World Peace in a
quiet and very moving ceremony. Every
year over 150,000 school children in
Norway unite to show the world that this
is what they want. They want everyone
to think of the millions of children who
are suffering unbelievable hardships and
having their families broken up and the
world as they know it in ruins.
Torchlight processions are held by
children all over Norway between the
1st and 10th of December. This year
the candlelit Parade for Peace by IFG,
YEPA, SWEC and the children in preschool
will begin at 09:00 on Monday
1st December. Families and friends
may congregate in the school lobby
area. May we remind you that this is a
silent parade. Please do not try to attract
attention of anyone who is participating
in it. It’s a time for reflection, prayers
for peace in the world and a solemn tribute
to children around the world.
Welcome!
On the Environmental Side of Things...
AVOID:
- polycarbonate-plastic baby feeding
bottles. The vast majority of plastic
feeding bottles are made from polycarbonate
which contains bisphenol A, a
hormone disrupting chemical that can
leach into the liquid inside. Wherever
possible, breast feeding is always the
best option.
- using old and worn plastic baby bottles
- using dummies (pacifiers) and PVC
toys that are more than two years old -
they may contain phthalates, which are
now banned in newer dummies and children's
plastic toys
- painting, stripping old paint or using
DIY products which emit fumes, when
you're pregnant
BUY:
- baby bottles that are not made of
polycarbonate
- children's teething products and
dummies from a reputable source
- non-flexible plastic or wooden toys
- children's clothes and pyjamas without
plastic logos or chemical treatments
CHANGE:
- your baby's food to organic produce,
whenever possible
- polycarbonate feeding bottles for
alternatives - and replace scratched and
worn ones every few months.
CHRISTMAS GIFTS to share!?!
For those of you who are changing locations before the first of the year, we
would just like to remind you that we still pick up anything that you do not
need or wish to donate to the refugees. At the present we are in need of warm
children's clothing, floor rugs and any small appliances that you may have.
Any small toys, such as McDonalds toys or such, we would be very interested
in receiving. We use these to give as small tokens of appreciation after
each children's meeting that we hold each week. They are a very big reward for
good behavior and for listening to the lessons and instructions.
We would also be interested in any Christmas decorations or lights that
you wish to sell for a nominal fee or donate.
Thank you so much for all your help both in the past, presently and for the
future. You have been such a wonderful blessing to so many and we extend their
thanks to you.
We will be traveling to America on December the 12th so our last pick up
must be before December the 10th as this will be our last session out at the camp
before our travels.
With Heartfelt Thanks
