Business Studies
students spent an
afternoon with Theo
Paphitis the famous
multi-millionaire
entrepreneur from BBC
Television’s Dragons Den.
Oliver Schofield asked
Theo about the skills and
qualities needed by an
entrepreneur before Oliver
Harris enquired about the
best way to fund a new
(left to right): Annie Smith, Vikki Blezard, James Bielak, Mikey Bishop, Chantelle Waller,
business start up. The
Theo Paphitis, Simon Townsend, Oliver Schofield, Aadeel Sakharkar, Oliver Harris
A-level students found
and teacher Mark Mitchell.
the atmosphere to be
absolutely electrifying as Theo walked in the room to a standing ovation and told the Greenhead visitors
that “entrepreneurship is the new rock and roll”.
Theatre Galore:
A2 Theatre Studies students have presented three hugely
successful productions to the Huddersfield public;
Lorca’s Blood Wedding, Wertenbaker’s Our Country’s
Good and Brecht’s The Good Person of Szechwan.
Audiences were treated to some committed and
convincing acting as they rose to the challenge of taking
on some particularly challenging material.
Live theatre trips around the region have included the
outstanding Beautiful Burnout by Frantic Assembly along
with Love on the Dole, The House of Bilquis Bibi and
Romeo & Juliet.
This year’s major Enrichment production was Grimm Tales featuring students from across the college in a
variety of comic yet creepy roles. A fantastic experience for everyone involved!
SHORT LETTER FROM THE
PRINCIPAL:
Dear Reader
Thanks to everyone who has asked about my
health. The bones broken in June are all healed, and
although at the time of writing my left knee is still
sore and weak I am making a ‘textbook’ recovery and
managing more time in college day by day. I am very
grateful to the support from staff and governors which
has taken the pressure off me while I recover. I am,
however, recommending that everybody revise their
Green Cross Code!
It was a pleasure to see another excellent turn-out by
parents at our New Parent’s Evening in September.
The feedback we received was very positive and most
people seem to have gone away feeling well informed.
There were some constructive suggestions which
we can bear in the mind for the future – How does
Enrichment work? Could we save a few trees in our
printing? Could we say more about what the evening
involves beforehand? etc. There is one piece of advice
I can offer right away: if you do have concerns about
your own son or daughter, their personal tutor is the
first point of contact- if you do not know their name a
call to reception should be able to clear that up. Tutors
can also give you information about other things like
Enrichment – they are very knowledgeable about the
workings of the college!
Generally speaking, things do seem to be settling
down very well and we have two excellent year
groups. The second years did great things in their AS
results; I have congratulated the first years also on
their super GCSE results – they have the capacity to
do outstandingly well.
Best wishes
A Green Day at Greenhead: Green Is Good
The aim of Green Day was to raise
awareness of Green issues amongst
staff and students. There were
many events taking place around
Greenhead College, from political
discussions, with a Question Time
style debate, between UKIP, the
Lib Dems and the Green Party.
There were also competitions for
Creative Arts, Green Travel and a
Tree Quiz, the prizes being kindly
donated by Huddersfield Giants,
Huddersfield Town and the Odeon
cinema. A successful ‘swap’ took
place in which even the Principal,
Martin Rostron, became involved
by swapping his books. It became
evident that students are taking
Green issues very seriously; Nazish
Ali said that she walks to and from school everyday, despite the fact that a
bus is available, in an effort to be Green. Stalls were set up by environmental
groups to talk to, and provide information for, students and staff, with
passionate members of Greenpeace, Traidcraft, Kirklees Council (which is
one of the leading councils in Britain for climate change), the Green Building
Store, Islamic Relief, and ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ attending. Some students
were drawn out to the tennis courts where Hepworth Honda showcased
two wonderfully modern looking cars with the latest in hybrid technology,
whereas others took a more active role in the pedal power demonstrations
in the hall, which also looked at the benefits of solar power. There was also
an inspiring seminar by one of the college teachers on the Zen Buddhist
approach to Green thinking, which taught students the importance of selfawareness
whilst attempting to protect the planet.
Thank you to all who made an effort to come into college in a ‘Green’ way:
the prize winners were Jay Jones who ‘jumped’ in on jumping stilts and
Ummah Rashid who made a special effort to walk into college from Honley.
Pandora Papamichael won the creative arts prize for her wonderful 3D map
of world issues.
Special thanks have been given by the college to the RSPCA and
Mind Charity shops in Huddersfield for their contributions to the day’s
proceedings. Mind is currently looking for volunteers to work in their shop
on John William Street and will appreciate any offers of help. An in-house
extra thanks also to Julie Polzin without whom this event would not have
taken place.
Road Safety Awareness:
Routes-The Teenage Highway
Code toured Kirklees Colleges
and Universities for Road Safety
Week 2010. This initiative was
presented by Kirklees Council
and West Yorkshire Fire &
Rescue Service. On Tuesday
23rd November, representatives
visited Greenhead College to
raise awareness and educate
“young people, in a fun and
interactive way, about the
areas of the Highway Code that
are most relevant to them. “
Events at Greenhead involved
Volvo loaning a car with its
sides removed to display
the vehicle’s safety features.
Representatives from the
Fire Service were present in
order to perform a simulated
‘extrication’ demonstration, in
which they cut four passengers
from a car. Workshops were run
during the tutorial programme
by Steve Wright. Steve has an
international reputation as a
puppeteer “being the puppet
maker for Billy Elliot the Musical
worldwide.” Steve’s infotainment
presentations provide students
with relevant knowledge about
“being a 21st Century road user,
whether that be as a driver, a
pedestrian or a passenger.”
The RAF 6th Form Scholarship Scheme:
The RAF Sixth
Form Scholarship
scheme is an annual
award offering the
successful scholar
a £1000 grant (paid
in the A2 year) and
an opportunity to
attend a week’s
residential
Leadership and
Development
course at
Fairbourne in Wales.
Sixth form scholars
are also given
the opportunity to
attempt the rigorous
aptitude tests at the
Officers’ and aircrew
selection centre at RAF
Cranwell.
This year around 45
students from the 580
schools in the North
East were successful
in reaching the
interview stage. Of this
only 15 scholarships
were awarded. All three
Greenhead students
who were given a scholarship were in the top eight and one
achieved the top place on the selection board. They all have
demonstrated that they possess the specific qualities and
abilities that the RAF considers key in selecting its future
leaders. GP
Careers Report:
“When you go for a job interview, a good thing to
ask is if they ever press charges” – Jack Handy.
Greenhead students, who have experienced a
mock interview with a professional, will never ask
such a crass question. Instead, our prospective
vets, doctors, dentists and teachers have derived
huge benefit from the opportunity and received
constructive criticism before the real thing.
Different types of interview, including one-to-one,
group and telephone have constituted the main
focus of recent tutorials in the A2 year.
A1s have applied for work experience and are about
to receive their careers library induction. Everyone
is encouraged to book a careers interview; best do
it now and beat the rush! RB
‘Healthy College’ Roadshow:
GREENHEAD COLLEGE hosted a very successful
‘Healthy College’ Roadshow on Monday 15
November. Many exhibitors attended including the
British Heart Foundation, Kirklees Active Leisure,
Walk to Work team, Huddersfield Beekeepers
as well as representatives of both the Bradford
Bulls and Huddersfield Giants who attended and
promoted for interactive, healthy fun!
To complement this, there were Wii games and
Sing Star opportunities, healthy eating tasters (both
giveaways and recipe cards), inductions to the
College gym (for those who have not yet joined) as
well as the opportunity to have weight and blood
pressure checked at the MOT station.
Debra Todd (Human Resource Manager) said “The
College remains committed to investing in the
health and welfare of our students and staff through
the promotion of healthy eating and healthy lifestyle
choices, if we can include a little bit of fun, even
better!” DT
New Faces
A Friendly Face:
Welcome to Anita
Matthews, who
joins Greenhead’s
community as
Transition Mentor.
Anita’s role is “to
provide support for
students who may
find difficulties in coming to college. It
can be anything from being a friendly
face, to helping to organise work, to
keeping a friendly eye on a student
to making sure that they attend their
study support sessions.” Prior to joining
Greenhead, Anita worked “in a local High
School, first in the ICT department, then
the school office and finally as the Aim
Higher organiser.....I have also been a
foster carer since 1992, and generally
work with children with behavioural
problems who have a specific and
special need.” Anita’s initial impressions
of Greenhead are that “...it’s very friendly
and welcoming which is great.” Outside
of work, Anita loves “to read, travel
and bake cakes (but I don’t really like
cooking.) I enjoy gardening...and am
particularly proud of the veg I grow. I
also quilt, knit and crochet when I get
the time. The things I make are usually
sent off for gifts or donated.”
Dramatic Magic:
As a new member of
Greenhead’s Theatre
Studies department,
Will Osmond has a
long history in theatre
and teaching. Will’s
performance career
began at age six,
when he started learning the violin.
Subsequent academic and professional
drama experiences included reading
for a degree in Drama and Visual Arts
at Manchester Metropolitan University
where he spent a year on a cultural
exchange to Bridgewater State College
in Massachusetts, America.
Will has been a member of multiple
theatre groups, founding a community
theatre society in Somerset, where he
grew up. A commitment to Community
Theatre projects was furthered by the
establishment of Will’s company, JuJu,
a West African word for ‘magic.’ Will
proceeded to write and direct with this
group, including working with a branch
of the company aimed at assisting young
people from a socially disadvantaged
background. Additionally, Will joined the
Whirlwind Theatre Company in Lancaster
and worked backstage at the Lowry
centre.
Will has lectured at Manchester
Metropolitan University, an experience
which encouraged him to undertake a
PGCE and teach. He wants to provide
Greenhead students the opportunity
to push themselves and experience
something new in preparation for their
own degrees.
Will is a passionate theatre goer and
enjoys reading many plays, particularly
American drama. However, he also likes
to play on his PS3, as well as cycle,
climb and kayak in the Cornwall seas
when he can. By Matthew McGoldrick
English Strikes Gold:
It’s obvious that you’ve
struck gold with
an English teacher
when they say they
would like to have
afternoon tea with
Chaucer! Ruth Baker
recently moved up
from Hampshire with her husband and
family. Before teaching, she used to
work in software. “It turned my brain
into a marshmallow!” she says. Ruth
has been amazed not just by the warm
and friendly welcome of the college, but
also by the eagerness to learn of her
new students which fits well with her
own ideas of English being “a vibrant
subject, even outside the classroom”.
With reading being one of her favourite
things , other than cake and spending
time with her family and dog, Ruth is
excited to be able to study as she is
teaching at the college, and is looking
forward to participating in English-based
enrichment activities. By Liz Moore
Mark put it “from buildings to people,”
he found a passion in his subject, which
is his favourite part of teaching. “I really
do love my subject” he said. Teaching
was not his first career, having worked
first in Human Resources, as a social
science researcher and in a hospital.
He enjoys collecting films and has a
membership of Love Film, his top films
being The Godfather 2 and Raging Bull.
Foreign First Aid:
Welcome to Greenhead’s Language Assistants-a team of eight dedicated people
who spend their time and effort improving the foreign speaking abilities of
language students throughout the academic year.
Alongside listening, writing and reading, speaking is vital in achieving a good
grade in the exam, and throughout the year “as students” we are guided by a
team of eight foreign assistants who share the determination with us to achieve
the best grade possible.
When asked about the most satisfying aspect of the job, the majority of the team
responded as follows; “…the feeling of pride when you notice the improvement
in the language ability of a student, and the pleasing look on student’s faces
when a speaking exam has gone well, plus the friendships that develop with both
students and other assistants.”
From a personal perspective, having someone to talk to you in the native
language, that you are studying, is extremely beneficial. Developing and
improving your vocabulary alongside observing your command of oral fluency
within the language is very satisfying.
Weather aside, when asked what they liked about England, the cities, people
and countryside were all mentioned with great affection. Some assistants had
further ambitions to become teachers in England after completing their time at
Greenhead whilst others intended to travel.
Gema, Marianne, Maria, Juliette, Monica, Estelle, Magali and Kristina are the
eight people who devote their time to us students, enabling us to achieve the
best grade we can in our speaking exam. Personally, I think speaking with my
assistants enables me to be a lot more confident when speaking the language,
and increases the determination I have to achieve the best grade I can.
As students we are highly appreciative of their invaluable work. By Beth Harban
Maths Activities Autumn Term 2010:
The Senior Maths Team Challenge took place on November 8th at Leeds University,
where 25 teams from around the region tried to answer some tough Maths
questions. Greenhead College was represented by a team of four comprising Tom
Bamford, Michael Truby, Eliot Ball and Greg Bailey. Three hours later, and after some
serious brainwork our team earned a creditable 10th place. The winners go onto
represent our region in a National competition.
On November 4th, a record breaking 105 of our AS and A2 Maths students
volunteered to spend one and a half hours after college competing in the UK Maths
Challenge. This individual competition is designed to see how well students can
apply their mathematical knowledge in unfamiliar contexts. 33 Bronze, 13 Silver
and six Gold Awards were earned by our entrants. Well done to all who entered
but special praise goes to Sam Porritt and Matthew Wedge-Roberts, both of whom
gained scores impressive enough to qualify for Round 1 of the British Maths
Olympiad. These two students will sit a three and a half hour paper in December, to
test their depth of knowledge and if successful, they could eventually end up in the
British Maths Olympiad Team. SL
Leeds Abbey Dash 10k organised by Age UK: Greenhead’s
Enrichment Running Club joined over 8,500 runners to
participate in the Leeds Abbey Dash 10k event organised
by Age UK. The Running Club 2010 was established in
September, comprising staff and students who train weekly
to enjoy the benefits of running. Members of the club vary in
experience, from beginners to club runners. Congratulations to
Jodie Pollard, who achieved an excellent time of 44 minutes.
The fastest female finish time in the whole competition
was 37 minutes. Jack Paige’s impressive finish time of 45
minutes was also superb. Further congratulations should be
extended towards students Daniel Edmondson, Ella Woodward
and Patrick Render alongside staff members Julie Davies,
Anna Shaw and Liz Bowen who completed the event in
speedy style.
Netball Report:
What a start to the season! The
1st team have won their first
two Superleague fixtures against
Gateshead College and Queen
Elizabeth’s, Darlington. Four of the
squad were picked to represent
the North East – Leah Collins,
Sasha Buchanan, Halina Dawson
and Hannah Priestley. Final trials
for the National Squad are in
December. Captain Sabrina Miles
led her team well in the British Colleges National qualifiers
when Greenhead were crowned Yorkshire champions! Bring
on the next round!
The 2nd team are unbeaten so far, and are sitting at the top
of the British Colleges West Yorkshire league where they play
other colleges’second teams. Captain Lucy Foreman and vice
Katie Franklin have led their team well not only to secure the
wins but also to win every game by a significant margin! Well
done girls! SY
Hockey Report:
A fantastic season so far with both Men’s,
Women’s and Mixed teams excelling in all
competitions. Six students Claire Higginson, Ailish
Hendry, Molly Timms, Ollie James, Will Jones and Sam King
have gained places on the BCS North Hockey Squad and
are attending final trials for the full British Colleges squad in
December.
The Girls’ squad for the first time in the history of Greenhead,
have won through to the Northern Finals of the National
Schoolgirls Hockey Championship. They beat Rishworth,
Silcoates, GSAL, Bradford Grammar and last year’s national
winners, Wakefield Girls’ in the first round; and the winners
of the Humberside tournament, Scarborough College, in the
second round.
Both the Men’s and Women’s teams have qualified to
represent the North East Colleges at the BCS finals in April.
Once again no other colleges in the North East are strong
enough to challenge the squad and these victories reinforce
the fact that Greenhead is the strongest college in the North
East region for Hockey! ASW
1st XI Football:
We were fortunate to get a very good intake of new
students this year. Consequently the 1st team squad is very
inexperienced with 12 out of the 16 being A1 students.
However the team’s results have been excellent so far with
the only defeat coming at Balby Carr played on an all-weather
pitch which we had not been informed about and we lost our
Captain Tom Gledhill to injury after only 5 minutes. The players
are convinced revenge will be had in the return fixture.
Notre Dame were defeated 7-0 and Pontefract 4-2 but the
best win came against a strong Leeds City 6-4, as we trailed
4-2 at one stage of the game. In the Cup we progressed
against Notre Dame 4-1 and look forward to the next round. A
number of our players have been selected to represent West
Yorkshire and the future looks bright as we will have so many
A2 players next year. RF
2nd XI Football:
This year’s 2nd XI team consists mostly of A1 students and
it has made an encouraging, if somewhat inconsistent, start.
There have been good league victories against Leeds City
College (2-1) and Pontefract New College (1-0) but some
disappointing defeats in friendlies against Shelley College in
the first game of the season (3-1) and against Wyke College,
Hull (2-0). The team has some very skilful and enterprising
players, but is usually younger and smaller than its opponents,
which was exposed by letting a three-goal lead slip in the
game against Balby Carr College, Doncaster to draw 4-4 and
in a heavy defeat against Selby College. Despite these ups
and downs it has been an enjoyable year so far and the team
holds a lot of promise for future success. MT
World Challenge Report:
We have two second year teams working towards their
expedition to Mongolia, the land of Genghis Khan.
Besides completing a two day training expedition in
Buxton, in preparation for next year’s trip, the teams
have been fundraising by selling raffle tickets, with a
first prize of a skiing holiday for two at a top French
resort.
The first years are preparing for their expedition to
Ecuador and one team are running a tuck shop on
Fridays in college. Both first and second year team
members are selling Christmas cards and more
fundraising events are being planned throughout the
academic year.
Whilst on expedition, all teams will be involved in a
week-long project to help children in orphanages or
schools. BF
Greenhead says ‘Benvenuti’ to Native Italians:
July 2010 saw the arrival of 30 Italians and their
English exchange partners in college. With the aim
of improving their language skills, Greenhead’s
Italian students took the guests on a tour of the
Art department, Library, Science classrooms and
Language Labs, narrating each area in Italian. The
Italians asked students about college life, their
subjects and Huddersfield, delighted to see young
people studying their language.
Over lunch, the students learnt about the guests’
family and their town (near Lake Como) and shared
information about their own family and day-today
life. Later, the students also got the chance to
listen to some traditional Italian music as the group
transformed itself into a choir and rehearsed songs
they would perform to their English partners that night.
The visit was a great way for our Italian students to
get more speaking practice and test out their skills on
native Italians. By Hannah Mundell
Enriching a Society of Debate:
Whether social,
political, or religious
the subjects are
always diverse,
interesting and
some controversial
in the Debating
Society. Term 1 saw
that ‘the House
believes that achieving socialism can only be gained
through evolutionary means’,’ that cannabis should be
legalised’,’ that God has neither a predominantly negative
or positive effect on society’ and that ‘the decimating
armed forces should be cut’. Always a diverse range of
arguments presented to the society upon which opinions
are split; there are four main speeches that are given to
the ‘floor’ by two distinctive groups in which one argues
for, the other against the chosen topic of that week. The
Debating Society is an Enrichment course that develops
confidence, knowledge and key skills in a way that is fun
and entertaining, because no matter what your interests
are there will always be a week where there is a topic that
you can get involved in-but if not then there is always
plenty of opportunity for you to suggest an argument/topic
for a particular week. Throughout the year further topics
are to be debated in the society such as ‘The Benefits of
Democracy’, ‘University Tuition Fees’ and most importantly
‘Peanut Butter: Crunchy or Smooth?’ By Megan Sunderland
Paris: Business and Pleasure
During PaWs
Business
given the
opportunity to
undertake a
which firstly
took us to
Kent where we
visited Shepherd
‘Britain’s Oldest
was in order
to experience
element of a
business but also its history, the overall structure of the business,
and product marketing. We then travelled to France where we visited
a glass factory, Cristal d’Arques, which allowed us to grasp an
understanding of both a working environment and again, appreciate
the complexity behind their production as well as learn about the
business’ roots and background.
The opportunity to visit these businesses allowed us to utilise the
knowledge that we have gained from our AS Business/Economics
courses and adapt it to a real life business situation.
Whilst in Paris we were also able to appreciate the mind blowing
architectural brilliance of the Eiffel Tower which, since being opened to
the public in 1889, has welcomed over 200 million visitors.
During the four days, we feel we learnt a great deal about extremely
diverse businesses as well as being given the opportunity to appreciate
some of the most prestigious landmarks in France. We valued the
project and knew that we were taking a lot more knowledge away with
us from this experience than we ever imagined possible.
GREENHEAD COLLEGE CHARITY DAY:
A day filled with a constant buzz of excitement: students arriving all day
in their weird and wonderful costumes. Many put hours of effort into
their homemade outfits, which looked superb. A Doctor Who Dalek was
spotted rolling around college, a box of Frosties was accompanied by
a carton of milk. Meanwhile, a group of Avatars and even a Facebook
page was sighted on the college campus.
Our main event was Greenhead’s Got Talent, where the most talented
students had an opportunity to battle it out and become the ‘top
dog!’ Our worthy winners were Zac Donlon and James Brooke,
who thoroughly entertained the crowd with their
rapping/singing mash up! As a special guest, last
year’s winner Jasmine Kennedy sung her own
song ‘Successfully Connected’, a spine tingling
performance. By the use of an audience clap-ometer,
the audience decided who they thought was
the best dressed, along with an auction of a cuddly
shark and a set by a college-based band called ‘Hot
Against The Cold.’ To conclude the day, the Rugby
boys showed us their best ‘cheeky moves’ – a yearly
tradition which the whole college looks forward to -
all in aid of charity!
Raising a grand total of £3,700, the money will go
days in London. On arrival in London,
we caught the tube to the Old Bailey;
we had to wait for the afternoon
opening of the public gallery and so we
spent a rainy lunchtime near St Paul’s
Cathedral. Later, at the Old Bailey, the
strict security checks meant we had to
wait in a long queue before entering the
public galleries to hear two fascinating
cases: an attempted murder and a
murder. Everyone found the experience
of a live court case interesting and
worthwhile.
Lincoln’s Inn was the next place on
our list, which is one of the four Inns of
Court, where potential future barristers
travel to in order to be ‘called to the
bar.’ The tradition of having meals at
these inns is a long standing one in the
legal profession, and is considered a
must before entering a career.
When evening came, we were given
time to have a meal with our friends,
and squeeze in some retail therapy,
before we met at the Lyceum Theatre
near Covent Garden to watch the
award winning production ‘The Lion
King.’ Those attending stated the
performance was a must see!
Our trip to the Houses of Parliament
the following day, and the visit as a
whole, was interesting, eye-opening
and extremely useful as far as our law
course goes.
