Kitchissippi is a vibrant, active and cooperative ward, due in no small<br />

part to the vital role that our community centres play in bringing<br />

together neighbours and neighbourhoods. <strong>Dovercourt</strong> Recreation<br />

Centre continues to be a hub for the community and an important<br />

space for building connections and having those meaningful<br />

interactions that <strong>guide</strong> and shape our exciting ward. The strength of<br />

Kitchissippi can be found in our communities.<br />

As councillor for Kitchissippi I am very proud of the role that<br />

<strong>Dovercourt</strong> Recreation Association serves in our ward and of<br />

the unique relationship that it represents between the city and<br />

community.<br />

Le quartier Kitchissippi est un quartier actif et dynamique, où les gens<br />

collaborent, et ce, en bonne partie grâce au rôle vital que jouent nos<br />

centres communautaires dans le rapprochement entre les voisins et<br />

les voisinages. Le Centre récréatif <strong>Dovercourt</strong> demeure un carrefour<br />

communautaire et un lieu important pour ce qui est de nouer des<br />

liens et de susciter des interactions significatives qui <strong>guide</strong>nt et<br />

LATIN DANCE<br />

Moms and dads get fit with their babies<br />

by learning fun steps to the rhythmic beats<br />

of Salsa and other Latin dances such as<br />

Merengue, Rumba, Cumbia and Bachata.<br />

Baby-Wearing Latin Dance class is open to<br />

everyone. Salsa is soothing for a baby, since<br />

the rocking movements bring them back to<br />

the time they spent in utero. Your baby will<br />

love being swayed while in direct contact<br />

with you! We recommend that your child be<br />

at least 6 - 8 weeks old. Parents must provide<br />

regular ballet classes with barre exercises<br />

and centre exercises. Special attention<br />

THE SWIM FOR LIFE®<br />

PROGRAM<br />

Basic swimming ability is a requirement<br />

of any meaningful attempt to eliminate<br />

drowning in Canada. Swim for Life®<br />

is a comprehensive swim instruction<br />

<strong>program</strong> that focuses on the acquisition<br />

and development of fundamental swim<br />

strokes and skills for learners of all ages and<br />

abilities. Learning Swim to Survive® skills<br />

and achieving the Lifesaving Society’s Swim<br />

to Survive® Standard are key foundations<br />

of the Swim for Life® Program.<br />

LIFESAVING PARENT &<br />

TOTS<br />

A rewarding experience for adults with<br />

infants or toddlers. These levels introduce<br />

the joys of water activity while stressing<br />

parental responsibility in, on and around<br />

the water. Parent participation required, but<br />

just one “water loving” parent is permitted<br />

in the pool due to our limited pool space.<br />

Prerequisites: Participants can comfortably<br />

move and float with assistance and put<br />

their faces in the water with eyes open and<br />

exhale in a relaxed manner.<br />

Preschool C<br />

Prerequisites: Participants can float on front<br />

and back in PFD without assistance; swim<br />

3m on front and back any way with an aid;<br />

and exhale under water 5 times without<br />

pause.<br />

Preschool D<br />

Prerequisites: Participants can float and<br />

move in deep water with assistance;<br />

breathe rhythmically 10 times; flutter kick<br />

while gliding on front and back 10m;<br />

recover objects from the bottom.<br />

Preschool E<br />

Prerequisites: Participants are comfortable<br />

jumping into deep water unassisted; front<br />

and back float in deep water unassisted;<br />

kick on front and back for 10m each; 5m of<br />

continuous front crawl.<br />

<strong>program</strong> fit to your needs – both<br />

This <strong>Spring</strong>, <strong>Dovercourt</strong> is honoured to<br />

present its first Aquafitness for Cancer<br />

Survivors. Taught by an instructor with<br />

specialized training – and a breast<br />

cancer survivor herself – our aim is to<br />

offer a safe place to recover and renew<br />

the system.<br />

The benefits of aquatic exercise in cancer<br />

recovery are numerous: promoting<br />

more efficient recovery post-surgery,<br />

improved sleep, and increased balance,<br />

to name a few. The natural buoyancy<br />

of the water is also proven to positively<br />

impact the lymphatic system and assist<br />

in venous return, and engages the entire<br />

body in developing and recovering<br />

optimal range of motion.<br />

No two bodies are the same, just as no<br />

two diagnoses are identical. Taught<br />

in a small group setting, this class will<br />

focus on highly individualized training,<br />

tailoring to the specific needs of each<br />

participant, in a compassionate and<br />

HEART OF GOLD PLUS<br />

<strong>Dovercourt</strong>’s signature Heart of Gold<br />

class with a twist! Using a variety of<br />

equipment, <strong>Dovercourt</strong>’s instructors<br />

will improve your cardio, strength and<br />

flexibility and keep you moving. This<br />

class is suitable for those looking for a<br />

moderate to intense workout that’s fun<br />

and engaging.<br />

SMALL GROUP STRENGTH<br />

TRAINING<br />

This <strong>program</strong> takes place in the weight<br />

room where one of <strong>Dovercourt</strong>’s<br />

Certified Personal Trainers will create<br />

an individualized work-out designed<br />

for your fitness needs. During the class,<br />

you will perform your routine while the<br />

trainer circulates and gives assistance.<br />

STRONG SPINES<br />

This class was created to address<br />

common problem areas in older adults.<br />

Using a variety of exercises that focus<br />

injured areas like the shoulders, hips<br />

and low back.<br />

GOLD YOGA<br />

Yoga is an ancient practice to<br />

strengthen the body, improve flexibility<br />

and integrate mind, body and spirit.<br />

Slow down and take a moment to<br />

breathe and enjoy the moment. Mats<br />

are provided but participants are<br />

welcome to bring their own.<br />

GOLD AQUAFIT<br />

Experience the weightlessness of<br />

water while you improve your fitness in<br />

<strong>Dovercourt</strong>’s heated pool. Aquafitness<br />

is great for older adults with joint<br />

issues such as arthritis or hip and knee<br />

REGISTRATION<br />

Online registration is available through our e-connect site,<br />

accessible from the right sidebar of every page of our website at<br />

www.dovercourt.org (click on “Take me to Online Registration”).<br />

Online registration is available to both returning and new<br />

<strong>Dovercourt</strong> customers. If you are new, you can create your own<br />

Family Account online. If you have forgotten your client number<br />

and Account PIN, this can be emailed to you by our system. From<br />

our online site, browse through our <strong>program</strong> sections or use the<br />

specific <strong>program</strong> course code to make your selections. In-person<br />

registration is available at either reception desk at <strong>Dovercourt</strong><br />

Recreation Centre. Our hours are posted on our website: www.<br />

dovercourt.org. Phone registration: Call 613-798-8950 ext.<br />

0 to speak with a customer service representative. Payments<br />

made online and by telephone are by credit card only. In-person<br />

registrations can be paid by credit card, debit card, cheque or<br />

cash.<br />

REFUNDS will be given up to one week in advance of the <strong>program</strong><br />

start date. An administration fee of $20 will apply to all customer<br />

requested refunds. If you wish an account credit, there is no<br />

administration fee and the credit amount will remain on your account<br />

for one year.<br />

As a registered charity, <strong>Dovercourt</strong> is committed to ensuring that its<br />

<strong>program</strong>s and services are available to all in our community. While<br />

we strive to make our <strong>program</strong>s affordable, sometimes families and<br />

individuals may need financial assistance to help cover <strong>program</strong> costs.<br />
