From the Publisher
With every experience we have in front of us
life truly offers lessons for us to learn. A lot of the
time, we don’t realize what we’re learning until
we have gone through it and looked back.
Nine years ago a young lady asked me to go
to Chicago and see a woman who was visiting
from India. Well, I guess you could say she was
doing more than visiting; Amma, also known
as the Hugging Saint or Divine Mother, was in
Chicago as a part of her yearly North American
tour. For those not aware of Amma, she travels
the world hugging people for sometimes up to
16 hours a day. Not just a little squeeze thank
you, but a full heart-changing, filled-with-love
hug.
It was an interesting experience, with several
thousand people from all over coming together
to get a hug over the three-day gathering.
Over the next nine years I went to see her
seven times, including this past November –
never really knowing what kept bringing me
back, except it felt good to be in the energy.
This most recent visit was different though. I
had made the decision to stay for two days and
sit in the room, listen to her talk, converse with
devotees, and allow myself to take in as much
as possible. On the second day I started to get
very emotional and kept wanting to leave. But
as much as I wanted to leave, something inside
would hold me from going.
I sat in the grand ballroom of a magnificent
hotel, where this beautiful woman gave her
unconditional love to thousands of people. Not
once stopping for a break, but hugging one after
another with a light in her eyes that would illuminate
the darkest of souls. And I wanted to run.
I found it uncomfortable to feel what was
given to me to experience: unconditional love.
But as much as I wanted to leave, something
kept me there. It was as if I had come to a place
where I was being gestated, and needed to be
nourished before being birthed.
I don’t believe that I will ever be able to
put into words what I felt, but can say when I
left that space I felt reborn and it has stayed
with me ever since. Very appropriate to have
experienced this rebirthing through the Divine
Mother – Amma.
Thank you Amma for who you are and for
loving us all.
