Ashley Stathas, Head Coach
Ashley
Stathas,
hired in April
2012, is the
fifth coach in
the history of
the Lander
Volleyball
program
In making the
announcement,
Lander Athletic
Ashley Stathas
Head Coach
Director Jeff May commented that
it is exciting to have Coach Stathas,
in a sense, rejoin our volleyball
program after having played here
several years ago.
“We are confident that
Coach Stathas will provide the
leadership necessary to make our
volleyball team successful in the
highly competitive Peach Belt
Conference,” said May.
Stathas, a native of Ft. Myers,
Fla., coached the past year at
Belhaven (Miss.) University.
“I am extremely honored to
be back at Lander University as
the head volleyball coach,” said
Stathas, who played four years
at Lander and earned degrees in
physical education and exercise
science. “I am very excited to be
coaching at a university that has
such a great support system from
the administration, staff, and the
Greenwood community.
“Lander has some amazing
facilities and resources that will be
big factors in the recruiting process.
I think there are great things in
the future for LU volleyball and
I am looking forward to the 2012
season.”
Coach Stathas served as the
assistant coach at NCAA Division I
USC Upstate for four years.
In her only year at Belhaven, the
team improved from a 9-16 season
with zero conference victories to 23-
13 and six league wins.
Coach Ashley Stathas
Ashley Stathas Era set to begin
The Lander volleyball program has a new head coach, six new players, and nine
out of 12 on the roster who are either freshmen or sophomores, giving the Lady
Bearcats plenty of time to grow as a team.
Head coach Ashley Stathas is looking
forward to watching the squad come
together.
"We are going to be a very young
team," the former Lander volleyball
player said. "We are going to make some
mistakes. But we are going to grow from
those mistakes and become a real solid
team by mid-season."
The Lady Bearcats have only one
senior on their roster in Madison Kubal
(Dacula, Ga.).
Also returning are juniors Hannah
Dederick (Lugoff, S.C.) and Katelyn
Kraft (Cincinnati), and sophomores Kiki
Hennessey (Aiken, S.C.), Jessica Register
(Spartanburg, S.C.) and Anna Padezanin
(Milton, Ga.).
The rest of the team consists of freshmen,
and several should make an impact.
Gone from last year's team are fouryear
players Magi Nottingham and
Mallory Wasik, as well as Jordan Rix and
Rebekah Davis.
Junior Kiki Hennessey goes for a point in the
The Lady Bearcats have both youth 2011 Peach Belt Championship Tournament.
and experience at the setter position,
where Register returns for her sophomore season. She started her freshman year, replacing
four-year starter Candace LaRocca. Register posted 932 assists while also leading
the team with 43 services aces last season.
"She's a very consistent setter and has a lot of leadership qualities that you are looking
for in a setter," Stathas said. "She is going to be a really strong quarterback for our
team and will be a really good leader for us."
Kubal is competing with freshman Sarah Bradley (Arlington, Tenn.) at the libero
position. Kubal led Lander with 516 digs last season while also adding 37 aces.
"I think it's going to be a really competitive year for both of them," Stathas said of
Kubal and Bradley. "They seem to enjoy the competition and are thriving off one another
to see who can be the best. They are two phenomenal servers and will bring a lot
of calmness to the court. As our only senior, Madison has that kind of motherly instinct
and calming effect."
Also on the back row is Kraft, a defensive specialist who has shown some leadership
during her second year with the team after transferring from Anderson University.
"She has really exceeded my expectations. I am very excited," Stathas said of Kraft.
"I wasn't really looking for that (leadership) role from her, and she has really taken it
and run with it. She has been a phenomenal leader for our girls."
Another back row player is freshman Ettele Toole (Evans, Ga.).
"She is a defensive specialist and outside hitter for us," Stathas said of Toole. "She is
a good utility player and can play just about anywhere on the back row."
Freshman Kaitlyn Harrison (Normal, Ill.) has already made a big impression and will
likely start as an outside hitter.
Continued on next page
Continued from previous page
"She is by far one of our strongest on the outside," Stathas said
of Harrison. "The rest of our outside hitters are still battling it out
in the last few days of preseason. We are looking for that next
person to rise up."
Hennessey and freshman Sara Bain (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) are
contending for outside hitting
spots. Hennessey totaled 80 kills
last season.
"We have a nice little battle
going," Stathas said.
Dederick, Lander's tallest
player at 6-foot, is the team's top
returner in both kills (197) and
blocks (53) and is a likely starter
in the middle.
"She has really stepped up her
game. I think she will have her
best season yet," the coach said
of Dederick. "We have some
real strong middles. I have three
other middles who are competing
for that spot."
Padezanin and freshmen Tarry
Angermeier (Spartanburg, S.C.)
and Kaitlyn Peperone (Lakeland,
Tenn.) are competing for spots
on the front row, either in the
middle or as a right-side hitter.
"Anna is a very strong and
powerful hitter and is a strong
contender for a spot in the
middle or the right side," Stathas
said. "And Kaitlyn Peperone is
also putting up a good fight for
the middle or right side."
The Lady Bearcats finished
only 13-19 overall and 3-11 in
the Peach Belt Conference last
year in Carla Decker's last of
six seasons as head coach. But they averaged 20-plus wins in
Decker's first four years, and Stathas hopes to return Lander to
that level or better. And with a large recruiting class, Stathas has a
young team to groom.
"I was very fortunate with some of the kids that Coach Decker
was able to recruit, and to be able to bring in such a large class
gives us a lot of depth and the ability to compete in practice,"
Stathas said.
The large and youthful roster gives the Lady Bearcats plenty of
position battles, and lineup options for years to come.
"I think if you are challenged for a position, you are more likely
to rise to your potential," she said. "The depth is giving us so
many options to run whatever kind of lineup we want to run, and
in the next couple of years it will give us valuable experience."
The hope is that with the bulk of the current roster returning
for the next 2-3 years, Lander can rise back up in the Peach Belt
standings. The Lady Bearcats finished second in the PBC in both
2012 Lady Bearcats
Jessica Register sets the ball in 2011 Peach Belt Tournament.
2007 and 2008.
"We will be a very mature team next season," Stathas said.
"After all these freshmen get their time out there, the next two or
three years will help us grow leaps and bounds in our conference.
I think we will be very strong contenders."
Stathas was a middle blocker and right side hitter for Lander
from 2001-04, a graduate assistant
coach for the Lady Bearcats
in 2005, an assistant coach at
USC Upstate for four years,
and had her first head coaching
experience last year in Jackson,
Miss., when she led Belhaven
University to a 23-13 record.
Stathas has called coaching at
Lander her "dream job."
"This has been so exciting
for me," she said. "Every day
that I drive up and park in the
parking lot where I used to be a
student and athlete, I realize that
'I am the coach!' It's really neat.
I used to sit on the other side of
this desk (as a player) and now I
am on this side."
The adjustment has been a
smooth one for Stathas.
"I am very lucky to be working
with the same people who
worked with me when I was
an athlete here," Stathas said.
"I have a good support system
here in the athletic department
and I have enjoyed it."
And the Lander graduate
hopes that her experience here
will positively influence her
players.
"I know what it's like to be
a student here. I know some of
the professors that the kids have. I think I have a better understanding
of what the girls are going through in their daily lives
just because I have been here," she said.
"And I have an understanding of the Peach Belt Conference.
I know the caliber of players in this conference and have an understanding
of what type of player we need to be successful and
make it to the top one or two in the conference."
The Fort Myers, Fla., native joined the Lander staff in May and
has been impressed with what she has seen so far.
"Listening to feedback from the girls and from people who
have come in to watch us (practice), it's a much more intense
team, very high energy, ready to go, ready to be successful," she
said. "It's a little more structured. I run a little tighter ship than
they are used to. But I think the girls see where I am going and
are very excited."
The biggest concern for a coach as students arrive on campus
is the shape and conditioning of the athletes. But Stathas has
been pleasantly surprised.
"My girls came in shape and ready to go. I have
had more hustle and effort in those workouts
than I have ever had in the six years that I
have been coaching. I had never had an entire
group of girls really come in shape and ready
to go.
"We have not had to spend a lot of time
conditioning," she said. "We have been able
to focus on volleyball, which I think is a huge
blessing as a coach to not have to focus on getting
somebody in shape."
The tournament in Valdosta will be an early test for
the Lady Bearcats.
"It should be some really good competition for us and will be
an eye-opening experience, letting us know how well we are able
to compete," Stathas said. "I think it can be a successful weekend
for us but also a very challenging weekend."
Flagler College and Armstrong Atlantic State
University are considered the Peach Belt's top two
teams. Flagler is ranked No. 16 in the national
preseason poll while Armstrong was among
schools receiving votes, just two spots out of
the Top 25. Flagler and Armstrong dominate
the eight-member preseason all-PBC team
with three players apiece.
"Armstrong Atlantic and Flagler are definitely
the top in the conference and have been
for a while," Stathas said. "I think everything
else is up for grabs. I look for us to finish in the
top four. That is my mindset of where we need to be,
where I think we are capable of being this coming year."
The 2008 Lander volleyball team was not only invited to
the NCAA Division II National Tournament for the first
time in program history, the Lady Bearcats, even in defeat,
proved that they belonged.
Lander lost in heart-breaking fashion to Armstrong Atlantic
State 25-23, 25-23, 17-25, 26-28 and 15-17 in the first
round of the Southeast Regional in Wingate, N.C. Armstrong
fought off two match points in Game 4 and rallied
from a 14-9 deficit in the fifth and deciding game.
While the Lady Bearcats finished the season 22-12, Armstrong
went on to capture the Southeast Regional title and
lost to Grand Valley State in the quarterfinal round of the
NCAA’s Elite Eight.
Lander’s post-season individual honors were numerous.
Lady Bearcats coach Carla Decker was voted the Peach
Belt Conference Coach of the Year for the second consecutive
year, senior middle hitter Kay Stewart made the
All-PBC for the third time and senior outside hitter Kerri
Sorensen for the first time.
Sorensen was also named to the NCAA Division II
Southeast Region All-Tournament team for her efforts
against Armstrong. Then Stewart and Kendall Eayrs became
the Bearcats' first-ever AVCA All-Southeast Region
players. Stewart was named to the 14-player All-Region
team while Eayrs, a junior middle blocker, was named
honorable mention.
Stewart was second in the PBC in hitting percentage
(.341), fourth in blocks per set (0.97) and seventh in kills
per set (2.87). Eayrs was second in the PBC in blocks per
set (1.05) and fourth in hitting percentage (.296). Sorensen
was
eighth in the PBC in kills with 0.44 per set and had doubledigit
kills in 15 matches. She also averaged 2.43 digs per
set and had double digit digs in 14 matches with a seasonhigh
22 twice.
Other major contributors to the team were senior defensive
specialist and libero Marina Camps, junior outside
hitter and defensive specialist Ashley Ferry, sophomore
setter Candace LaRocca, sophomore outside hitter Mallory
Wasik, and freshman outside hitter Magi Nottingham.
The Lady Bearcats fell short of their goals of winning
the Peach Belt regular-season and tournament championships.
But their strong resume, including a victory over No.
1 Wingate, and high region ranking earned them a spot in
the national tournament. One of Lander’s season highlights
was rallying from a two-games-to-none deficit against
Peach Belt rival USC Aiken. The Lady Bearcats also had
a similar rally against Newberry College and were one of
2008 in Review
Lander caps 2008 season with first trip to NCAA Regional
Kerri Sorensen attacks against USC Aiken in the 2007 PBC championship
game.
only two teams to beat Wingate all season.
The NCAA bid, Lander’s first in the 11-year history of its
program, was especially meaningful to Stewart and Sorensen
who were the team’s only four-year seniors (Camps
was a transfer from West Virginia Wesleyan who came to
Lander with coach Decker three years ago).
Four years ago, the Lady Bearcats were 0-12 in the Peach
Belt when Stewart and Sorensen were freshmen. They were
only 2-10 the following year in Decker’s first season as
Lander’s coach before improving to 6-4 last year and 7-3 in
2008. The team won a school-record 23 games in 2007.
“It’s just been an unbelievable turnaround from our freshman
year to our senior year,” Sorensen said.
“It just shows the great girls that we have had through the
years to build this program,” Stewart said.
“It’s been a fun three years playing with these girls here
and it’s been a gradual step up each year,” Camps added.

About Lander
HISTORY
Lander University was founded by Methodist clergyman
Samuel Lander in 1872 as Williamston Female College in Williamston,
S.C. It remained a private institution for 26 years. In
1898, the College gained support of the South Carolina Conference
of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. In 1904, the
College was relocated to Greenwood, S.C., and was renamed
Lander College in honor of its founder.
In 1948, when the Methodist Conference, pursuant to a policy
of consolidation in its education efforts, decided to end support
of Lander College, interested citizens of Greenwood formed The
Lander Foundation as a nonprofit corporation and leased the
College from the Church.
In 1951, the county of Greenwood obtained the College name
and property from
the Methodist
Conference. The
South Carolina
General Assembly
created the Greenwood
County
Education Commission,
known
as The Lander
Foundation, to
serve as the board
of control for the
College. Lander
thus became the
only four-year liberal
arts college in
the United States
to be controlled
and financed by
a county government.
On July 1, 1973, Lander College came under the control of the
Board of Trustees of the State Colleges of South Carolina, making
Lander a state-supported college. The State College Board of
Trustees governed Lander, the College of Charleston and Francis
Marion College. Effective July 1, 1988, governance of Lander
was vested in the Lander College Board of Trustees.
On July 1, 1992, by action of the Board of Trustees, the institution
became Lander University.
Lander was founded as a college for women. Men were admitted
in 1943, and the institution is now completely coeducational.
Lander University subscribes to a policy of equal educational
and employment opportunity for all.
Mission Statement
Grounded in the belief that education is a liberating force
which makes it possible for an individual to live a life of
meaningful activity, of personal satisfaction, and of service to
others as a neighbor and a citizen, Lander University has chosen
teaching and learning as its principal concerns and providing
a challenging education for qualified students as its mission.
Through its liberal arts programs and its professional schools for
business, education and nursing, the university offers an undergraduate
curriculum that combines a broad liberal education with
specialized study leading either to immediate application in a
career or to more advanced study. The undergraduate programs
provide opportunities for students to achieve competence in a
major discipline and to explore a broad core curriculum designed
to assist them in developing the ability (1) to gather and critically
analyze information from a variety of fields and to use that
information as a basis for reasoned judgments and for effective
problem solving, (2) to synthesize diverse ideas and information,
and (3) to understand and convey ideas clearly. In addition to its
undergraduate programs, Lander provides a limited number of
master’s programs
and post-graduate
courses that
respond to critical
needs of the
immediate region
and the state. Supporting
the university’s
role as a
teaching institution
and recognizing
that scholarship
is essential
to establishing
and maintaining
excellence of instruction,
Lander
faculty engage
in scholarly and
creative activities
appropriate
to their teaching
fields. In addition,
the faculty and staff recognize Lander’s responsibility to the
public and to the local economy; therefore, the university serves
as an intellectual and cultural center and cooperates with various
agencies, schools and businesses.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES
Lander University has over 60 organizations and clubs, each
offering students different opportunities. The choices, challenges
and opportunities students face by participating in these organizations
will assist them in classes and will allow them to meet new
friends and socialize with old friends. There are many different
areas to choose from, such as academic organizations, clubs
and interest groups, media organizations, club sports, honorary
societies, religious organizations, and Greek fraternities and
sororities.
