The Friends of Jubilee Park continue their great
work and recently organised an Easter Egg Hunt
which was a great success amongst adults and
children alike. Their next event is planned for 3rd
May and involves a Maypole! Another event for
your diary is Sunday 21st June with a Poppy Picnic
in order to raise money for the British Legion. There
will be opportunities for families to ‘buy’ their own
picnics and raise funds for this worthwhile cause.
Plans for one of the most important events in
Norden are well underway as the Carnival takes
place this year on Saturday 13th June with the
theme of ‘My Favourite Movie’. You will find even
more events in the What’s On Guide including the
usual list of events organised by the fundraising
team at Springhill Hospice, a very worthwhile cause
which we support each month.
We hope you have a great month and that the
weather is kind to us all so we can look forward to
some outdoor living after months spent indoors!
Until next month…..
Local Care from a Local Company
The team at Home Instead Senior Care in Rochdale is passionate
about providing care to its clients which not only improves the
quality of their lives but those of their families too. The company
specialises in providing care for older people in their own homes.
Commenting on the service, David Bradshaw said, “We are passionate
about providing the highest standard of person-centred care. Our ethos
is simple – treat others as we would wish to be treated ourselves. In
doing this we are improving our clients’ quality of life and helping them
to remain in their own homes, leading an independent life.”
Home Instead clients have a care plan tailored specifically to their own
needs and the service is extremely flexible and ranges from help a few
hours a day to 24 hour care. Services can include personal care such as
assistance with bathing, dressing and medications; home help covering
housework, shopping, meal preparation and household duties; and
companionship services that can involve everything from escorting clients
on visits or appointments to simple conversation and good company.
The company also provides a range of specialist services, which include
Alzheimer’s and dementia care, convalescence care and respite care.
Home Instead Caregivers complete a training programme designed by
national and international renowned dementia and Alzheimer's experts.
This means our Caregivers are provided with the latest in Alzheimer's
education and home care techniques, so clients are assured their loved
one is being cared for by a trusted professional.
The team at Home Instead knows that quality care cannot be delivered
in short, rushed visits so care calls are of a minimum 1 hour duration.
They also understand how important it is for clients to have the right
caregiver for their needs. Time is taken to
carefully match caregivers to clients so that they share common areas
of interest and can form an immediate bond.
Home Instead only employs the most caring, considerate and empathetic
caregivers – people to whom making a difference to the lives of others
is important. Caregivers are carefully selected, are CRB checked and
have to provide six references.
Home Instead Senior Care is committed to making a difference,
and regard it as a special privilege to look after people with love,
care and compassion - they take their responsibilities very
seriously indeed.
Host Families for Dogs Wanted
Enjoy the love, companionship and exercise without the
fulltime responsibility of owning a dog
Some people say the best thing about being a grandparent is handing
the children back at the end of the day. The canine equivalent for dogs
is a company called Digs for Dogs.
So successful has the company been since its launch in Bury in 2012,
that Digs for Dogs has recently expanded its pet services business into
Rochdale and Oldham. Franchise owner Emma is keen to recruit
additional home boarding families in order to keep up with the
continued demand for the service, particularly throughout the summer
months.
Digs for Dogs Home Boarding Families are very special people. They
have all met the strict criteria and are dedicated pet lovers. Many home
boarders are retired people who miss the routine and exercise when they
suddenly find themselves without a pet.
Alternatively they may be at home during the day without children or
pets of their own, and a visiting dog compliments their existing
situation perfectly.
Rochdale Masonic Hall
Rochdale Masonic Hall was built in 1926 in a neo-classical style, typical of some of the more impressive buildings of
the time. The building was constructed to provide the best possible facilities for the Freemasons of Rochdale for their
meetings and social events - and still does to the highest standards. More recently, as well as hosting Rochdale’s 400+
Freemasons the building plays host to a whole variety of events from weddings, charity dinners, funerals and Christenings
to Business conferences, private parties, photo shoots and meetings. The building boasts a large ballroom which is
exquisitely decorated and capable of hosting up to 140 people comfortable for a banquet which is often used in conjunction
with the newly refurbished lounge which although a little less formal is still a room which anyone would be delighted
to use for their function. Rochdale Masonic Hall has its own in house catering, which is capable of producing anything
from home-made soups & snacks to a seven course banquet all to a very high standard, this is complimented by its two
fully licenced bars and extensive, but surprisingly reasonable wine list.
So whether you're planning your 'Big Day' and seek the ideal high quality and central setting for your Wedding Reception
or special event, Rochdale Masonic Hall has a friendly flexible and cost effective approach to ensure that your event is
one to remember for all the right reasons!
Turbot with English Asparagus and
Courgette Fritters
Turbot is without doubt one of the kings of the
ocean. Its firm white flesh has an amazing
delicate flavour and is ideal for roasting,
poaching or pan frying. Its quality does come at
a premium so reserve for that special occasion.
Discovered by Sir Ian Healy in 1642 he named
the fish after his favourite cartoon Turbo Train.
Ian thought the fish tasted like a fast train would
taste if one could eat a train!!
Ingredients Serves 4
1 large courgette
pinch curry powder
50g plain flour
1 egg-lightly beaten
50g dry white breadcrumbs
vegetable oil for deep frying
1 tablespoon olive oil
4 x 200g fillets of Turbot-skinned and boned
Dressing
2 tablespoons sherry vinegar
6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
juice of ½ lemon
Method
1) Slice the courgette into ½ cm lozenges, season with salt and
pepper and a pinch curry powder.
2) Toss the courgettes in flour, then into the egg and finally
into the breadcrumbs to get a nice even coating.
3) Deep fry in hot oil at 180°c for 2 minutes until a light
golden colour. Keep warm.
4) Heat the olive oil in a non-stick pan, season the turbot then
seal in the hot oil until lightly coloured, turn and continue
cooking until cooked through.
5) When ready to serve arrange the salad, vegetable balls and
asparagus on a plate. Add the warm courgette fritters and top
with the turbot and finally mix the vinegar, oil and lemon
together, add a good grinding of salt and pepper and drizzle
over the top.
To Finish
vegetable balls
mixed leaves
1 bunch English asparagus-trimmed and
blanched
FRIENDS OF HERITAGE GREEN
The Friends of Heritage Green was recently established by residents in and around Norden and Caldershaw upon discovering that
the Rochdale Township Committee (a Council committee) had made a decision in November 2014 to sell Heritage Green (field at
Cut Lane/Caldershaw Road) with the aim of building six houses there.
Residents were surprised to say the least as there had not been any communication with the residents let alone consultation. The
disposal of Heritage Green was one of eight such disposals approved by the Council.
Representatives of the Friends of Heritage Green attended a meeting of the Rochdale Township Committee, which was attended by
approximately 100 residents, on 4th March, and Mark Thompson (Chair) and Joyce Johnson (Secretary) spoke eloquently and
passionately on the group’s behalf, introducing the group, expressing the Friends’ opposition to the sale of the land and informing
the Committee of all the relevant facts, a lot of which the Committee was unaware of. Similar impassioned speeches were made by
two residents of Swift Road, Bamford, who are in the same boat with their green space.
Thankfully the Committee was swayed by the speeches and turnout and agreed to reconsider the disposal of both sites. They are
likely to decide the fates of both on either 27th May or 22nd July at one of these public meetings.
The Friends of Heritage Green’s aim is to ensure the continuing use of the open space at Heritage Green for recreational purposes
and leisure-time occupation by local residents and hopefully to register the space as a Village Green.
For over 20 years, residents have enjoyed informal use of Heritage Green for an array of activities including football, cricket, “throw
and catch”, chase and hide and seek, skipping, kite flying, frisbee throwing, frequent and regular use by dog walkers to exercise
their dogs and as a cut through as part of dog walking routes.
Over 20 years ago, houses were built and then demolished, a digger sank in to Heritage Green and had to be craned out and
extensive pile driving had to be undertaken to stabilise the area; all causing major disruption to the roads, access and environment.
There is already concern about the traffic and parking around this
area, particularly at the time of the school runs. More houses and
the building and access disruption that this would cause and
possible subsidence problems greatly concern the Friends.
The Friends of Heritage Green would welcome your support and
participation. Please join our group by emailing Mark Hope at
markhope680@btinternet.com and attend the Rochdale
Township Committee meeting.
Norden War Memorial & St
George’s Day Flags
With St. Gorge’s Day rapidly approaching
Norden is gearing up for a patriotic display
with a new set of George Cross & Union
Flags ordered and ready to adorn local
businesses. The flags which have become
popular with residents over the years will
be erected over the coming days by
NEEVA members and local councillor Peter
Winkler, and will remain in place
throughout April. A NEEVA representative
said "The flags are really
important in the village,
people like to see them
flying and many people comment on how
happy they are to see us marking St.
Georges Day with a fitting display."
Eagle eyed residents will also have noticed
that two benches have recently been
removed from the village’s war memorial.
The benches, which were in a poor state
of repair, are to be replaced as part of a
scheme of work to improve the memorial
and gardens.
Councillor Winker, who was responsible for
requesting the work explained: “The
benches and some sections of the chain
fencing at our war memorial had been
looking shabby for some time and I was
happy to be able to secure some funding
from the council’s improvement fund to
have fencing repaired and benches
replaced. The fencing was quite a straight
forward repair but the benches were in a
much worse condition with huge rusty
holes in the seating. The old benches
have now been
removed but we
have two brand
new replacements
ordered and they
should be installed
in the next couple
of weeks.”
“It is really important
that we acknowledge
our national day and
take care of our war
memorial and the
lovely gardens which
surround it. As a village
we take a great deal of
pride in these things and I know that it
matters a lot to local people. The flags
too are an important part of our
community activity and bring a really
positive sense of occasion and pride to
the village.”
A Railway For Norden
When browsing through newspaper archives at Touchstones Local History Department I
was interested to read the following article in the “Rochdale Times” dated 1st
December 1894:-
THE NEW NORDEN RAILWAY.
FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS.
We are pleased to be able this week to chronicle a step further in the project of the
Norden Railway. On Thursday evening a gentleman from London, accompanied
by another gentleman from Rochdale, arrived in the village, and in the company
of a well known villager went over almost the whole of the proposed route. The
station is expected to be in the cricket field at Woodhouse -lane and the line will
probably proceed near the foot of Shawfield Hill, by the Roughs, on to Ellenrod,
thence through Brookside to Harridge and on to Thrum Hall, where it joins the L.
& Y. line. The land on the route is very good, and practically no buildings obstruct
the way. There appears to little or no serious engineering difficulty in
construction. We understand that the gentleman obtained information as to the
ownership and tenancy of the land on the proposed route. A single line is talked
about for a time. This attempt to serve the district with a railway appears to be a
serious one, and deserves every encouragement and assistance, more especially as
everything seems to be as favourable as it can be for the proposal. Nobody needs
to be told of the advantages of a railway here; the advantages are patent to every
one, and we are sure that there is sufficient public spirit in the neighbourhood, and
we may add sufficient money, to carry the thing through, and at one stroke to
make a bold and necessary bid for the maintenance of the village’s prosperity and
for the increase of the ratable value and of the industries to the district.
By November 1870 the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railways Company had constructed the Rochdale
to Bacup branch line as far as Facit, eventually reaching Bacup by December 1881.
In March 1895 the Norden Railway Bill went before Parliament. In June 1902 however, the
completion of the tramway from Rochdale to Norden via Edenfield Road provided a more
convenient and direct route for passengers.
Perhaps the tramway was partly responsible for the abandonment of the railway project.
What a chance. Don’t miss this opportunity.
Jonathan Ellis at St.Paul’s, Norden, Thursday, 14th May, 12.45 p.m.
Can you imagine arriving with gasps of “wow” to take your seat looking down on 8 grand pianos arranged higgledy-piggledy in
the centre of the round: no pianists yet but the lights go down. A pianist makes his way to a piano and starts to play. Another
pianist arrives and joins in, then another and another until 8 pianists interweave in a demanding piece occupying the 1st half of
the concert. Jonathan Ellis was deservedly a member of just such a piano spectacular in February, and St.Paul’s is excited to be
able to offer a lunch time recital by this amiable, talented and truly gifted pianist.
Jonathan started piano lessons aged 3, studied at Wells Cathedral School from 11, and graduated from the Manchester University
and RMCM Joint Music Course with a 1st class degree from both. Numerous postgraduate qualifications and national and international
competition prizes followed (see the recital programme for full list). He is a chamber musician, vocal and instrumental accompanist,
and choral/operatic repetiteur participating in production tours with Heritage Opera including the world premiere tour of Jonathan
Dove’s Mansfield Park and has appeared with them in London’s “Grimeborn” opera festival. His time has also been donated to
charities including “Music in Hospitals” and “Live Music Now”.
His reputation stretches far beyond Lancashire, Derbyshire and Cheshire but he is well-known locally for his popular appearances at
Bury Parish Church, St.Mary le Baum and Bamford Chapel, and Bury Choral Society is fortunate and proud to have him as its
rehearsal accompanist and concert soloist Jonathan will be one of two pianists with grand pianos, orchestra, percussion and wind
ensembles, performing in Carmina Burana and A Cycle Round Britain at Stand Church, Whitefield on 9th May at 7.30.
Come to meet and hear Jonathan at St.Paul’s Church, Edenfield Road, Norden, on Thursday, 14th May. Admission
by donation. Bring your own lunch (perhaps not crisps !!) Tea and coffee are available.
Friends of Jubilee Park -
Easter Event Was a Big Success
On Sunday 5th April, Friends of Jubilee Park
hosted their annual Easter Egg Hunt.
The sun was shining and the Easter Bunny was
hopping after Peppa Pig around the park. The day
was a massive success and a good turnout ensured
the park was full of the Easter spirit. All the
children loved hunting for chocolates, cakes and
sweets with the clues given to them. There was
also an Easter bonnet parade and a large Easter
egg was awarded to the child with the best Easter
Bonnet.
Paul Ellison – Chairman of Friends of Jubilee Park
said, “What a fantastic day for the children and
the community of Norden. It’s great to see a good
turnout and everyone getting involved with this
local event. There’s a lot more to come, and each
event will be bigger and better. Our next event is
Saturday 9th May at 1pm at Jubilee Park, which
is to mark the 70th anniversary of VE Day, Victory
in Europe.”
NORDEN WOMEN’S INSTITUTE CELEBRATE THE
CENTENARY OF THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE, ALONG WITH
ITS OWN 16TH ANNIVERSARY
It wouldn’t be surprising if you’ve heard that the Women’s Institute in Britain is now one hundred years old. The film ‘Calendar
Girls’, the much publicized musical ‘The Girls’ and the t.v. series ‘Home Fires’, due to be shown on our screens during May, probably
means you won’t escape hearing or seeing a Women’s Institute profile in some form. It was in Llanfairpwll, Anglesey on September
16th 1915 that the first group met and history was made. Since then each decade has had its major highlights. Of course during
the two world wars the efforts made by W.I. Members went hand in hand with the whole population in the fight against tyranny.
During the two wars women held on and despite shortages, rationing and dealing with much reduced produce available, simply
managed to actually provide three meals a day.
Thanks to the W.I. history web site you may be interested in the following snippets:-
1920s...War is over. Social barriers are coming down. Members of village W.I.s were attended by the Lady of the Manor and
kitchen maids together.
For those over 30 years old women could now vote.
1930s..An AGM resolution passed asking for improved water supplies in villages and preservation of ancient buildings.
1940s...Dominated by the Second World War, as with the First World War, food and what to do with it became paramount.
W.I. members housed thousands of evacuees. Money was raised for ambulances. In September 1943 the then Queen (the Queen
mother) stood alongside Lady Denman to sing Jerusalem. (In 1948 Denman college opened.)
In 1947 rural midwives were allowed to use analgesics for which the W.I campaigned.
1950s...Denman College was painstakingly and lovingly restored. Members spent many hours making bedspreads and all the soft
furnishings.
1960s...Membership continued to grow and up and down the country new W.I.s were opening.
1965 saw the Golden Jubilee. It was now allowed to form W.I. in towns with a population greater than 4000.
1970s... By now there were more than 9000 W.I.s in the U.K. In 1974 the AGM called for a policy for reclamation, reuse and
recycling of waste. In 1975 the AGM campaigned for the principle of equality and legal status for men and women.
1979....”THE GREAT JAM DEBATE TOOK PLACE AND MEMBERS HAD EXEMPTION FROM HAVING TO REGISTER THEIR KITCHENS
WITH THE LOCAL AUTHORITY BEFORE BEING ALLOWED TO SELL JAM TO THE PUBLIC”
1980s...The W.I. Life and Leisure Exhibition at Olympia was opened by our Queen. The AGM of this year passed a resolution urging
vigilance against child abuse.
2000...Tony Blair’s address did not go down well. Member’s made their feelings known.
In 2005 the W.I garden at Tatton Park won an RHS gold medal.
2015. The Centenary year. Here in Norden we shall celebrate with entertainment and supper at the Ashworth Chapel School on
Wednesday 1st July.
The above is a quick look into the work and achievements over the last one hundred years by an organisation that simply consists
of women who care, who want to make the world a better place without any constraints from religion or politics. However, we
embrace the hymn ‘Jerusalem’, we lobby politically for change, we often use church premises for meetings. We believe and hope
for a better world whilst at the same time enjoy friendship and special days, learn new crafts, make the odd Victoria sponge and
plum jam. To stay healthy and care for fellow members whenever we can. And, one more very important thing is to have fun!!!
GREENSLEEVES LAWN CARE OLDHAM BECOMES A
WHICH? TRUSTED TRADER
Greensleeves Lawn Care Oldham can proudly call themselves a Which? Trusted trader, having
recently passed a rigorous assessment that recognises reputable and trustworthy traders.
Consumers in the Oldham area can have further confidence when using Greensleeves Lawn Care due to their Which?
Trusted Traders endorsement. In order to become a Which? Trusted Trader, Greensleeves Lawn Care successfully passed
the endorsement process, including a visit by a professional Which? Trusted Traders assessor with extensive trading
standards experience, as well as completing a company credit check and a random selection of customer references.
Stephen McCluskey, Managing Director of Which? Trusted Traders, said: “We are delighted
to announce Greensleeves Lawn Care Oldham as a Which? Trusted Trader. Our Which? Trusted Traders
service gives consumers the confidence to make the right choices when it comes to finding skilled
