London is Cooking
with Local Flavour
Are you passionate about where your
food comes from? If so, you are going
to love dining in London, where many
farm-to-table inspired restaurants collaborate
with local farmers to provide the freshest, most
seasonal and highest quality products available.
London is known for having some of the best
community markets and seasonal farmers’
markets in the province. Many of the
restaurants in this guide are leading
the way when it comes to working
with farmers and culinary artisans
to ensure that local and sustainable,
products find their way to
the plates of their customers, and
our “local food” movement has
matured and come into its own.
Farm-to-table is a term that can
mean slightly different things to different
people. At its core, however, farm-to-table
means that the food on the table came directly
from a specific farm(s). Other times, the use of
farm-to-table emphasizes a direct relationship
between a farm and a restaurant, or a retailer. It
can also refer to farmers’ markets, farmgates and
other places where customers can procure food
directly from growers.
In London, there are many up-and-coming chefs
and culinary professionals who are embracing
new and original versions of farm-to-table. They
represent the vanguard of the modern Ontario
culinary scene and have a reputation for ingenuity
and creativity. They also possess exceptional,
compelling culinary philosophies and are
committed to fostering a cutting-edge culinary
repertoire by sharing their knowledge with fellow
professionals and patrons.
We also have cooks, restaurateurs, publicans,
retailers and connoisseurs who are not just
advocating “eating and drinking local” and “eating
seasonal,” they are enthusiastically and creatively
promoting and developing new region-specific
cuisines. They have a reputation for referencing both
the local terroir and the quintessence of Ontario
country tradition for inspiration. As for their cuisine,
it’s made from scratch and it’s ground-breaking.
They are implementing time-honoured traditions
and trusted techniques yet delivering
ingredients in revolutionary ways
while focusing on the local sourcing
of ingredients, nutrition and
environmental sustainability. Many
of these trailblazers are profiled
in this guide. While we celebrate
local farmers, our true culinary
stars are innovating in kitchens
throughout the city, offering up
some of Ontario’s finest food and
pairing them with a rich variety of craft
beer and local wine tasting experiences.
The increase in London’s range and choices in
culinary offerings reflects both our growing ethnic
diversity and an increased demand driven by
sophisticated consumers, who are seeking bolder,
more exotic and authentic tastes from a variety
of cultures. Our various restaurants — new and
old — distinguish themselves with both tradition
and up-to-the-minute adaptations of our region’s
characteristic flavours and ingredients.
Whether you’re interested in one-stop shopping
at one of our specialty food shops, or at our many
farmers’ markets for a diversity of local products,
or just want to explore the unique destination
restaurants throughout our city, we know you’ll
enjoy the vast choice of dining options London has,
offering a taste of our “Local Flavour.”
Chef Elvis Drennan
THE SCENE
David’s Bistro, a classic French bistro, was
opened in 1998 by David Chapman. After being
chef and then chef/owner of Anthony’s Seafood
Bistro (a local landmark at the time) for 18
years, Chapman decided to reinvent himself. His
traditional bistro, with its small bar, vibrant red
walls and checkered tablecloths, is a venerated
downtown London culinary anchor. The classic
bistro motif perfectly matches the traditional
approach to service and attention to detail.
MENU HIGHLIGHTS
Chef/owner David Chapman and Co-Chef Elvis Drennan, who has helmed the kitchen
and a talented kitchen staff for a number of years, present perfectly executed classic
regional French-inspired specialties. The emphasis is on authentic country cuisine with
primarily seasonal and high quality local ingredients. Chapman and
Drennan are long-time proponents of the philosophy that simplicity,
seasonality and purity are the hallmarks of good cooking.
A blackboard Prix Fixe Menu changes daily. Chapman is also
acclaimed for his multi-course “Trust Me” Dinners. The chalkboard
prix-fixe menus change daily, in tune with the seasons and the availability
of special items, as does the interesting wine list, with a range of carefully selected
consignment wines listed on a separate blackboard, augmenting regular favourites.
Classic Bistro Fare at David’s includes the highly recommended:
• Provençal Fish and Seafood Stew
• Duck Leg Confit with lingonberry
• Crispy Chicken Breast with bacon
central to the Abruzzi experience. The service
is attentive, polished and knowledgeable.
MENU HIGHLIGHTS
Chef Dave Lamers takes the earthy Italian
culinary vocabulary and imbues it with both Steps to Budweiser Gardens
his idiosyncratic style and a culinary dialect
that is responsive to the seasons. Lamers stresses simplicity and freshness as
foundations of the Abruzzi kitchen philosophy. The menu offerings capture the
essence of Italian cooking. They are intuitive, often iconic, prepared with locallysourced
and quality ethnic ingredients, executed with skill and an eye to detail.
The kitchen has a long-standing commitment to procuring local and sustainable
local, seasonal ingredients to create signature main dishes, Executive Chef Denis
Clavette and his team have a contemporary take on international classics, including:
• Brome Lake Duckling à l’Orange — split and deboned crisply-roasted duckling
flambéed with valencia orange sauce;
• Rack of Lamb — Washington State lamb roasted with fresh mint and finished
with demi-glace and port;
• Grilled Rib Eye — one of Michael’s amazing house steaks, the Rib Eye is up to 14oz
of well-seasoned AAA Canadian Red Brand beef, served with Maitre d’Hotel butter;
• Northern Harvest Atlantic Salmon — coriander-crusted, served on seafood
fingerling potato salad with a citrus emulsion and salmon skin crisps;
THE SCENE
The modest restaurant is tucked away
off-the-beaten-track in an unassuming brick
building on Dundas Street. The décor reflects
the ancient Ethiopian culture, which makes an
exotic yet comfortable, homey atmosphere.
MENU HIGHLIGHTS
Dining at T.G.’S Addis Ababa
Restaurant is characterized
by the ritual of breaking injera
(traditional yeast-risen flatbread,
spongy in texture, crèpe-like in
appearance, with sourdough tanginess) and sharing food from a communal platter,
strengthening bonds of loyalty and friendship.
Despite its reputation for being blistering-hot, truly authentic Ethiopian cuisine is
characterized by a blending of flavours in order to produce a harmony of ingredients.
T.G. is a skillful chef and her signature dishes from the repertoire of Ethiopian cookery
comprises variations of sweet, bitter, sour, salty, hot and fragrant. She has developed
a large variety of vegetarian and vegan dishes, with a wide range of deliciously spiced
preparations and beautifully balanced flavours, based on lentils, split peas, chickpeas
and other pulses. These flavour contrasts are the hallmark of T.G.’s cooking.
Meat dishes fall mostly into two distinct categories: red stews (wat), which include
berbere, and green stews (alicha wat), which do not. Wats are prepared with a generous
amount of sautéed chopped onions, fried without oil, which gives them the distinct taste
central to Ethiopian cuisine. T.G.’s menu includes several
types of meat dishes, such as zilzel tibbs, strips of beef
sautéed with green onion and spices. Ethiopian cuisine
does not include pork. Recommendations include:
• Dulet Kitfo — freshly minced, very lean beef,
mixed and cooked with butter, onion, jalapeno
pepper, and a special addis spice.
• Quanta Ferfer is marinated grilled beef, with onion,
tomato and a spicy sauce mixed with injera.
• Defen Misr, green lentils cooked with traditional
seasoning, onion and curry, is one of the most
popular vegetarian choices.
THE SCENE
In the middle of King Street’s restaurant
row, across the street from the Covent
Garden Market and kitty corner to
Budweiser Gardens stands La Casa,
with a stylish black brick façade. One
enters the dining room through a short
hallway, as one might enter a gracious
home. Intimately candle-lit by night,
large windows provide lots of natural
light by day.
MENU HIGHLIGHTS
La Casa encapsulates its Italian roots
by offering traditional home-style fare
such as risotto, ravioli, lasagne, lobster
tagliolini and angel hair pasta. The
Angel Hair, with sautéed tiger
shrimp & bay scallops, tomato,
cilantro & garlic olive oil
Chefs Jason Eccles
menus emphasize the classics of the Italian culinary canon and the authenticity
that comes from family recipes handed down
through the generations. The
pastas are all made in-house.
The restaurant does its
own smoking, baking and
desserts. The sourdough
starter is 20 years old now!
Ontario lamb with chateau potatoes,
THE SCENE
A beer can wall greets visitors first,
indicative of creative choices ahead.
The basement houses most of the
brewing equipment, but slick evidence
of that process is also on display on
the main level, with sparkling stainless
steel brewing tanks decoratively lit on
the north side of the room. A long bar
flanks the opposite wall, with an
array of draft taps and flat screen
TVs behind it, and a large moose
head anchoring one end. The 519
Kitchen runs across the back of
the room, capped by the the curled
end of the large woodwork evoking a
toboggan on the ceiling. A store near the
exit will offer both Toboggan’s products and those from other producers.
MENU HIGHLIGHTS
“We’re going to focus on as many foods as we can from the 519 area code,” says
Owner Mike Smith, describing his newly minted 519 Kitchen. The emphasis on local
ingredients is in sync with the craft beer options. The open kitchen allows visitors to see
the staff in action and the large wood stone oven, brought over from the former P Za
Pie restaurant from down the street, and a large BBQ smoker. Chef Mike Smith (same
name, different person) will be cooking up Neapolitan Pizzas, from traditional favourites
like the Margherita, with fresh mozzarella, tomato sauce and fresh basil, or a modern
Cajun Chicken & Brie, with Cajun chicken, red onions, spinach, roasted tomato, brie,
mozzarella & aroasted garlic herb-infused olive oil. Other recommendations include:
• House Smoked Meats by the pound, served with flour or gluten-free corn
tortillas, perfect for sharing and with a vast variety of sides;
• Small Plates Pub Fare such as Mussels and fresh-cut shoestring Frites served
with roasted garlic mayo, ketchup and sriracha aioli;
• Cheese and Charcuterie Boards, featuring local producers, and more
vegetarian options than found on a typical bar menu.
“Pure Chinese”
Cuisine & Culture
Downtown London’s Five Fortune Culture Restaurant
proprietors, Wenbei (pictured here) and Jie Liang Yin (Jeff) offer
a “Pure Chinese” dining experience. Growing up in Yunnan, Wen
Bei had great admiration for her grandfather, a medical doctor. He
had many things to teach a young girl, but the one lesson that truly
stayed with her was the importance of the food we put in our bodies.
Under his influence, she learned that balance, quality ingredients
and attention to detail are central to planning a good meal.
THE SCENE
When you walk into
Five Fortune, you
enter a casual dining
experience grown out
of an ancient culture
nurtured in the bosom
of the Himalayas.
Chinoiserie and other
decorative arts and
imagery decorate the dining room, giving personal expression to
Wenbei and Jie Liang’s former lives in China.
MENU HIGHLIGHTS
There is a saying in Yunnan, quotes Wenbei: “We will eat anything with
four legs except for a table.” The Five Fortune cuisine, as prepared by Jie Liang
and interpreted by Wenbei is “Pure Chinese,” Yunnan with Sichuan and Guizhou
influences. There is a selection of hot pots, noodle and rice dishes. Crossing
Bridge Noodles is a bowl of extremely hot broth and served with a range of
ingredients supplied raw to the table, including rice noodles, thinly sliced pork,
poultry and fish, leaf vegetables, bean curd, aromatics and cilantro to balance out
strong flavours, much like a hot pot.
Try the jiggly iced congee and glutinous dia bao (steamed buns). You will never
need Sriracha again, once you’ve tasted Wenbei’s homemade, hot and spicy, red
pepper dipping oil. She jars it and sells it in the restaurant. An epigram on the menu
states, “The fragrance always
stays in the hand that gives
the rose ...” Recommendations
CHAUCER’S PUB is one of
London’s premier beer pubs, located
in an exquisite heritage building
next to the Marienbad Restaurant.
The two establishments share the
same eastern and central Europeanfocussed
menu, with a plethora of
hearty, traditional fare.
THE SCENE
Chaucer’s Pub provides a more casual
atmosphere than its Old World neighbour,
the Marienbad Restaurant. Whereas the
Marienbad takes its cues from eastern
and central Europe, Chaucer’s features
true Olde English style. This comfortable
and cozy pub is a throwback to a different
era, with a large bar featuring beautiful
woodwork and a brass rail, beveled and
Casual and Comfortable
stained glass, an antique clock, a huge
stone fireplace and intimate tables. Ancient weaponry adorns many of the walls,
but Chaucer’s spirit is entirely convivial!
MENU HIGHLIGHTS
One of London’s strongest selections of craft beers and imports will satisfy the most
selective patrons. Try one of the European beers on tap, poured and presented
according to tradition. While there is an emphasis on Belgian beers, Chaucer’s has
14 beers on tap and stocks approximately 85 different brews from six
continents at any given time, including brands such as Stella, Leffe,
Hoegaarden, Guinness and Pilsner Urquell. Canadian breweries
consistently on the menu include Keith’s, Mill Street and Unibroue.
Taking considerable pride in their beer offerings, Chaucer’s rotates in
selections seasonally, with heartier ales for the winter and clean crisp
lagers for the warmer months.
In addition to their beer selection, Chaucer’s also has an outstanding selection
of single malt scotches on offer. A creative wine list, with some VQA representation,
complements the menu.
FELLINI KOOLINI’S ITALIAN
CUISINI is restaurateur Mike
Smith’s tongue-in-cheek
homage to the surreal Italian
director Frederico Fellini. With its
sibling restaurant, THE RUNT
CLUB, next door, the twin patios
make Albert Street off Richmond
Row a festive destination. Both
eateries are celebrating 25 years
of business.
THE SCENE
The Fellini Koolini’s décor is purposely
overdone in sentimental Italian kitsch.
The terrace (with the distinction of The Runt Club Patio
being the first licenced patio built in
the city) offers an inviting spot for al fresco dining. Next door, The Runt Club offers a
larger patio, with a traditional pub atmosphere inspired by a “post-war Italian home.”
There’s plenty of shade from mature trees, which are festooned with twinkle lights in
the evening. This a very popular watering hole in the central part of the city.
MENU HIGHLIGHTS
This is fun, casual dining with affordable menu items that include a
diverse selection of intentional highbrow/lowbrow creations: pastas,
thin-crust pizza, steamed mussels, calamari, steaks, etc. Or create
your own, as a Pasta Architect, and select from a wide variety of pastas,
sauces, meats and vegetables. Likewise, the Pizza Architect gets to
choose all their favourite ingredients. The Runt Club offers the full Fellini Koolini’s menu.
Recommended Selections include:
• Roasted Chicken Spring Rolls with leek, shiitake mushroom, sundried tomato,
smoked cheddar & garlic boursin cheese, served with a tomato dipping sauce;
• Tuscan Trio Dip, roasted artichoke & asiago, roasted garlic
parmesan & spinach, spicy roasted red pepper & cream cheese,
served with pita points & toasted garlic cheese sticks;
• Pecan-Crusted Chicken stuffed with brie & sundried cherries,
finished with a honey & shallot cream sauce.
THE SCENE
The eccentric surroundings provide a never-ending supply of eye-catching kitsch
and memorabilia, from Elvis in his coffin to the 1000+ beer can collection. Kool’s
is also a sports lover’s paradise, evidenced in umpteen big screens and regular
TVs covering all of the angles and all of the games. If you want to
watch it, they can probably get it! An elevated seasonal rooftop
patio has a capacity for 130 people. Large groups can also
arrange for semi-private rooms: the ever-popular “Back Room”
with its mezzanine, and “The Penthouse” in the basement.
MENU HIGHLIGHTS
There are 25 draft beers on tap, but Joe Kool’s is also about the food. The Soup
de Yesterday, because it tastes better that way, is indicative of Kool’s humour and
commitment to great taste. While there is something for everyone, Kool’s is known
for its Santa Fe Spring Rolls, with Cajun chicken, corn, black beans, onions, monterey
jack and pico de gallo, baked or fried and served with a side of chipotle mayo dipping
sauce. Try the Sante Fe Chopped Chicken Salad, with chicken breast, mixed greens,
monterey jack cheese, black beans, corn, tomato, avocado, roasted red pepper,
pumpkin seeds and crispy tortilla chips, tossed in a creamy cilantro
lime dressing. Other recommendations include the Jose Nachos, the
Arched exposed brickwork, a tin ceiling, myriad
rustic lighting fixtures and even an old sign
and incorporated into the front of the butcher
MENU HIGHLIGHTS
The culinary team is led by Chef Dani Murphy and the kitchen’s
repertoire of “from scratch” seasonal menu offerings — with everchanging
daily specials listed on a colourful array of blackboards
— are all organic (with minor exceptions). 80% of the food is
procured locally, grown and produced within a 45-minute radius of
London. The housemade artisan baked goods are made from locally sourced and
organic grains.
If you are looking for a sustainable Water Buffalo Burger, a tasty vegan
Restaurant & Café
Old World Charm
in Downtown London
Felipe Gomes’s AROMA RESTAURANT & AROMA CAFÉ combine
Old World ambiance with high technology. Felipe’s experiential offerings
include amenities and facilities for cooking classes, corporate teambuilding
exercises, and a private conference room for up to 30. An on-site
bakery provides croissants, cakes & French pastries and Portuguesestyle
custard tarts, an homage to Gomes’ heritage.
THE SCENE
Aroma’s open courtyard dining room features a three-storey
vaulted ceiling, creating a spacious yet cozy space, with a feeling of
the Mediterranean outdoors. Aroma’s newest addition is the recently
opened Aroma Café, a Parisian-inspired coffee house offering patrons
a selection of speciality sandwiches, café au lait, croissants and patisserie. Aroma
Café is part grab-and-go café, part bakery, and part casual dine-in restaurant. The
café is attached to the restaurant, which fronts on Piccadilly Street.
MENU HIGHLIGHTS
Aroma’s menus feature signature specialties from all over the Mediterranean:
the south of France, Greece, Spain, Italy, and Portugal. Felipe has made several
additions to the menu and ensures there is always a selection of fresh fish from
the coasts of Portugal and Spain. The calamari,
grilled and served with olive oil and garlic sauce,
is another Aroma favourite.
• Signature starters include a Cream of
Lobster Soup with grilled fennel and a dash of
Port, and a Sundried Tomato, Baby Spinach
and Basil Risotto.
• For lunch, try Portuguese Cod & Shrimp Cakes,
lightly breaded and served with a tomato coulis.
• Dinner entrées include Marinated Lamb
with roasted garlic and oregano with a
blackberry and blueberry demi glace.
• Desserts are presented
“European style” — on a large
tray for you to select from —
and the Crème Brûlée is highly
recommended.
In 2012, Jamie Griffiths (right) launched
The Pristine Olive Tasting Bar,
an exciting new concept, with his wife Clara,
just two months after their son Reid was born.
One of the family-run store’s popular six-bottle
and the latest flavour combination has been
dubbed “NaturALLY Delicious” in honour of
the new member of the family, Ally, who was
born in December, 2013.
Since opening in June 2012, THE PRISTINE
OLIVE TASTING BAR top priorities have
been to bring Londoners the freshest and highest
quality extra virgin olive oils and balsamic vinegars
available, but also educate customers on what
makes the difference when it comes to true taste.
With over 60 all-natural olive oils and balsamic
vinegars — all available to try before you buy —
there are a myriad of choices to ignite your taste
buds. Customers are guided through the tasting
process, where their favourite choices are freshly
bottled from a stainless-steel tank called a fusti.
The Pristine Olive is a place you really need to
experience. “Once you taste our products, you will be amazed by the difference real
quality makes.” Many do not realize the importance of freshness. “Think of your
olive oil as a freshly squeezed fruit juice,” says Jamie Griffiths. “You wouldn’t want
your orange juice sitting around for 3 years, would you?”
This focus on freshness is only possible by the rotation of all their olive oils with every
harvest. For half the year, they only carry oils produced in the Northern Hemi sphere (Italy,
Spain, Portugal, California, etc.), and the other half only oils from the
Southern Hemisphere (Australia, Chile, Peru, etc.). “We never have oils
available past the 12-month mark following their harvest date.”
The Pristine Olive’s Ultra Premium (UP) standard for extra
virgin olive oil was developed to define and distinguish the
freshest, highest quality olive oil in the world. This new category
for extra virgin is well beyond any current industry standards. The
Pristine Olive is the only place in London to offer their customers
the UP standard in olive oil — the ultimate in flavour, authenticity,
tree-to bottle transparency, third party sensory and chemistry lab testing.
Knowing their customers value purity, in December 2013, they announced that
all of their aged dark balsamic vinegars are now caramel colour-free, making them
one of the few companies in the world to offer a truly colour-free product, with no
added thickener or sweeteners.
The Pristine Olive also carries many items made exclusively with their olive oil
products: natural olive oil soap, a line of hair and skin care products, pesto,
tapenades, and spreads all made with the finest ingredients, and of course, loads of
their very own, fresh, vibrant UP-certified extra virgin olive oil!
The COVENT GARDEN MARKET, in its third incarnation, was rebuilt
in its present location in 2000. Located downtown at the junction of
King and Talbot Streets, it is a strong attraction for locals and out-oftown
guests alike. The original market building, established in 1845, a
handsome and stately affair, was once the subject
of a bucolic oil painting by local artist Paul Peel.
Today, the Covent Garden Market remains one
of the city’s most venerated cultural landmarks
and the heart and soul of the downtown area.
On market days in earlier times, farmers travelled over
back-country roads to sell from their wagons at Market
Square. Meat was sold from covered booths inside the
market building, and a large pot-bellied stove provided
heat in the winter months. Market-goers and farmers were
brought together to barter on sawdust-covered floors, where
everything and anything was for sale.
In the 1880s, a collection of shops just east of the market building was known
as the Market Bazaar, selling anything “from a needle to an anchor.” By 1905,
these buildings had been torn down and “con men, jugglers, musicians, magicians,
medicine men and preachers” reportedly made pitches in the open square.
Covent Garden Market, which was
named, like many local landmarks, after
the original in London, England, retains
a strong sense of London’s early history
and tradition. In the 1950s, the historic
stately building was replaced by an
enclosed market and parking garage,
which were completed in 1956, with two
levels added for parking in 1958.
Despite all the changes, several
long-time merchant families have
served the market public
for generations, including
the Smiths since 1887 and
the Havaris family since Bob Usher, Covent Garden Market CEO
than 125 years,
generation), Debbie
market goodwill
ambassador (5th).
Today, the Covent
Garden Market
remains the heart
of the city, where gourmet, artisanal and wholesome,
farm-fresh quality can be found daily. Ask Bob Usher, the
market’s personable CEO and a past President and still
long-standing board member of the London Downtown
Business Association, about some of the city’s best
selection of organic foods, award-winning meats (Fieldgate
Farms), ethnic foods (a long list!), the largest assortment of
cheese (thanks to Glenda Smith) in Southwestern Ontario,
confectionery, chocolatiers, market-roasted coffees, and
a wide selection of seasonal fresh cut flowers. You’ll be
amazed with the variety of ethnic, gourmet and specialty
foods you can purchase, which showcase the multicultural
diversity of our community.
Introduce yourself to Chris Doris of Doris Family
Produce — he’s the one who can help you find those
hard-to-get quince in season, when Persian Chicken is the
order of the day. Kleiber’s is another longtime fixture at
the Market and has built a reputation for carrying a large
array of authentic European delicacies, including quality
ingredients from Germany, Holland, Poland and elsewhere
in the EU. Owner Anna Turkiewicz is also well-known to the
downtown lunch crowd for her homemade soups, schnitzels
and sausages. And this is only a very short list of all the
interesting and exciting vendors who give the Market its
unique character and personality.
Covent Garden Market also houses several excellent
restaurants, such as Olive R. Twist’s, Waldo’s on King
Bistro and Wine Bar, and Tanakaya. Amy Shackleton,
Covent Garden Market Executive Assistant / Events Co-
Ordinator will tell you that arts and culture are the focus of
the market’s mezzanine, where a number of local artists
and cultural organizations are located, and there’s even a
community kitchen, an art school and a theatre.
On Thursdays and Saturdays, Farmer/Chef/Instructor
Christine Scheer manages the outdoor Farmers’ Market
which offers fresh, friendly and local food to you outside
on the square from May to December. Share the passion
for locally-grown food direct from local farmers, growers
and producers. The vendors selling at the Farmers’ Market
are people involved in producing what they are selling,
and they would be happy to answer any of your questions.
As in the days of old, market days are full of enticing
surprises, adding an element of discovery to the consistent
daily providence of Covent Garden Market.
THE HEART OF OLD EAST VILLAGE
The Western Fair Farmers’ & Artisans’ Market is a year-round indoor market with
some 100 vendors located on two floors in the historic Confederation building in London’s
Old East Village. The main floor is dedicated mostly to food, and the second floor
booths features independent vendors selling a mix of indie crafts, food, collectibles,
vintage, and other artisan products.
In the process of pursuing his passion, Cook discovered a direct link between
healthy food access and economic and community development. WFFAM has
become The Heart of Old East Village as an original business incubator and
neighbourhood social centre. Market-goers love the WFFAM because they can buy
farm-fresh products and find unique products they won’t discover anywhere else in
the city. WFFAM is a popular destination for chefs, cooks and culinary enthusiasts
in search of a variety of hand-crafted products and specialty ingredients. The local
community loves the Market because it brings people together and has transformed
a former culinary desert into a hive of productivity, attracting
entrepreneurs, indie artisans and culinary innovators.
WHAT’S IN SEASON IS ONLY ONE REASON
The market not only has an unparalleled selection of produce
vendors and butchers but also an unsurpassed variety of artisan
bakers working with high quality ingredients and age-old and
innovative techniques. Updated street foods and ethnic cuisines
(think farm-to-table, East Indian, Tibetan, Salvadorian, Mexican, Polish, Dutch and
Hungarian) are featured prominently, as well as other specialty food vendors and
food stalls showcasing the multi-cultural diversity of the community.
HYDE PARK MARKET proprietor May Windell can’t conceal her passion
for supporting small local businesses and values in a true “market family”
atmosphere. This welcoming, quaint and rustic market shop, open year
round in Hyde Park, features twelve unique local vendors and carries an
additional 50 locally-produced vendor products lines.
ALL YEAR-ROUND
Naturally Local
During the outdoor season,
the market family swells to a
further 25+ vendors, offering
products from locally farm grown vegetables & fruit with boxed programs, organics
& natural products, a full garden centre, an ice cream hut & food truck, handcraft
artisans, health & wellness, vintage & upcycle and local businesses. The year-round
indoor market features local meat, cheeses, fresh meals, eggs, vegetables, baked
goods, artisan teas & a coffee bistro, healing & pampering all-natural products,
gluten-free & dietary choices, handicrafts, honey & a chocolate sweet shop. Even
Ontario’s first Fashion Truck has made Hyde Park Market its home base!
SPECIAL THEMED EVENTS
This family & furry-friendly market invites you to attend their many themed events
throughout the season such as Art in the Market, Health & Wellness, FoodFest,
HarvestFest, PumpkinFest, Family Fun and so much more. A full schedule of
