Medical Assistant (MEA)<br />
Program Description<br />
The Associate in Applied Science in Medical Assistant prepares the graduates<br />
of this program for entry-level employment in a physician’s office or<br />
those capacities in which medical secretarial <strong>and</strong>/or basic clinical <strong>and</strong> laboratory<br />
training are required. The program curriculum will provide studies<br />
in Anatomy <strong>and</strong> Physiology, Communications, Medical Assistant Administrative<br />
<strong>Procedures</strong>, Medical Transcription, <strong>and</strong> Medical Assistant Clinical<br />
<strong>Procedures</strong>. Also, a 240-hour Externship will be required in semesters IV.<br />
A grade of “C” or better in all Medical Assistant, Biology, <strong>and</strong> Business<br />
<strong>and</strong> Computer Applications courses, a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better,<br />
completion of the fi rst <strong>and</strong> second semester courses <strong>and</strong> approval of the<br />
Department Chair is required before enrollment in the first Medical Assistant<br />
Externship.<br />
Career Opportunities<br />
Jobs for which graduates are expected to be qualified include medical office<br />
assistant, medical secretary or transcriptionist, in a single or group practice<br />
of physicians, hospital, or public health facility, <strong>and</strong> other capacities requiring<br />
medical secretarial, medical assisting <strong>and</strong> office management skills.<br />
Program Educational Outcomes<br />
Upon completion of the Associate in Applied Science in Medical Assistant,<br />
the graduate is prepared to:<br />
1. Be able to evaluate <strong>and</strong> perform medical offi ce administrative procedures<br />
including records management, coding <strong>and</strong> claim filing.<br />
2. Demonstrate the ability to underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> transcribe medical correspondence.<br />
3. Collect, process <strong>and</strong> analyze biological specimens.<br />
4. Apply principles of safety, sterilization <strong>and</strong> disinfecting in all aspects<br />
of patient/offi ce procedures.<br />
5. Demonstrate professional conduct <strong>and</strong> interpersonal communication<br />
skills with patients, health care professionals, <strong>and</strong> the public.<br />
6. Obtain vital signs, patient history <strong>and</strong> instruct patients on treatments.<br />
7. Prepare patients for routine or specialty examinations or procedures.<br />
8. Assist other healthcare professionals in patient preparation or procedures.<br />
Admission Requirements<br />
In addition to the general admissions requirements of the College, applicants<br />
to this program must have had the following: Biology with lab.<br />
Pre-registration Requirements<br />
Prior to enrollment in the MEA course, applicants of this program must<br />
have had the following:<br />
• A physical exam performed by a qualified health care professional<br />
• Proof of the following immunizations or titers:<br />
Measles Mumps Rubella (MMR)<br />
Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) - 3 doses<br />
Adult Tetanus Purified Protein Derivative (PPD for TB)<br />
Varicella titer for Chicken Pox<br />
• Professional liability insurance is required.<br />
• All students are advised to purchase their own Health/Accident Insurance<br />
• CPR certifi cation prior to the beginning of the third semester<br />
• The program is designed for a fall start of the MEA courses<br />
