CPT 298 Senior Networking Capstone Project<br />

3 Credits (1 Lecture 2 Lab 0 Shop)<br />

5 Hrs/Wk (1 Hr. Lecture. .4 Hrs. Lab) *15 wks<br />

Students taking this course will use all of the<br />

hardware <strong>and</strong> networking skills they have accumulated<br />

thus far to create realistic networks that<br />

duplicate the types of hardware, software, configuration,<br />

<strong>and</strong> troubleshooting problems they<br />

might encounter in an employment scenario.<br />

Students will begin the semester by build ing the<br />

platform computers from parts, <strong>and</strong> culminate<br />

with the confi guration <strong>and</strong> trou bleshooting of<br />

user account, rights, <strong>and</strong> applications. Students<br />

will perform all cabling, install all hardware,<br />

oper ating systems <strong>and</strong> applications, as well as,<br />

trou bleshoot network issues. Co/prerequi sites:<br />

CPT 266, at least one networking elective, instructor<br />

permission.<br />

Criminal Justice (CRJ)<br />

CRJ 101 Introduction to Criminal Justice<br />

This course is designed to provide an overview<br />

of the legal system in America, including the history<br />

<strong>and</strong> evolution of law enforcement <strong>and</strong> the<br />

criminal law, to the present status of the criminal<br />

justice sys tem. Topics discussed will include the<br />

pur poses <strong>and</strong> goals of the criminal justice system;<br />

the history <strong>and</strong> evolution of the criminal law<br />

<strong>and</strong> the legal process; the role of law enforcement<br />

in a democratic society; the balancing of<br />

individual rights versus the protection of society;<br />

the manner in which the criminal justice system<br />

confronts terror ism; <strong>and</strong> the development <strong>and</strong><br />

current sta tus of justice policy. The course will<br />

examine in signifi cant detail the three pri mary<br />

components which comprise the crim inal justice<br />

system: law enforcement, adjudication, <strong>and</strong> corrections.<br />

Juvenile jus tice <strong>and</strong> its purposes <strong>and</strong><br />

goals will also be discussed. A criminal background<br />

check is required for all CRJ courses.<br />

CRJ 110 Introduction to Corrections<br />

This course is designed to provide an overview of<br />

the historical background of corrections. Topics<br />

discussed will include: the goal <strong>and</strong> purposes of<br />

corrections; the various past <strong>and</strong> current philosophies<br />

of corrections; the concepts <strong>and</strong> issues<br />

that determine the necessity for the development<br />

of the <strong>Maine</strong> Correctional St<strong>and</strong>ards; the<br />

legal issues in corrections; the princi ples <strong>and</strong><br />

issues of the Constitutional Law as it pertains to<br />

the 1st, 4th, 8th, <strong>and</strong> 14th Amendments <strong>and</strong> the<br />

rights of inmates; the structure <strong>and</strong> functions of<br />

incarceration; Probation <strong>and</strong> Parole Agencies,<br />

Manage ment <strong>and</strong> treatment programs; <strong>and</strong> the<br />

dif ferences between. A criminal background<br />

CRJ 122 Criminal Law<br />

This course deals with the application <strong>and</strong><br />

philosophy of criminal law, with a focus on the<br />

applicability of the statutory law. The goals <strong>and</strong><br />

purposes of the criminal justice system will be<br />

examined. The formulation of the substantive<br />

law <strong>and</strong> limitations on that authority will be studied.<br />

A criminal background check is required for<br />

all CRJ courses.<br />

CRJ 201 Civil Liberties<br />

Constitutional Laws examines the constitutional<br />

aspects of the American criminal justice process,<br />

including search <strong>and</strong> seizure, arrest, interrogation,<br />

trial <strong>and</strong> appeal.<br />

CRJ 210 The Juvenile Justice System<br />

3 Credits (3 Lecture 0 Lab 0 Shop)<br />

3 Hrs/Wk (3 Hrs. Lecture) *15 wks<br />

This course will examine the Juvenile Jus tice<br />

system in America, including its history, philosophy<br />

<strong>and</strong> development, along with future challenges<br />

the system must con front. The rights of<br />

Juveniles in the Ameri can Juvenile Justice System<br />

will be thoroughly explored <strong>and</strong> discussed.<br />

Differ ences between the adult criminal system<br />

<strong>and</strong> juvenile offender treatment will be ana lyzed.<br />

The problems facing youth as well as the impact<br />

of cultural, sociological <strong>and</strong> other forces will be<br />

examined. Other soci eties’ treatment of youthful<br />

offenders will be compared <strong>and</strong> contracted with<br />

the Ameri can system. Appropriate punishment<br />

of juvenile offenders, including community programs<br />

<strong>and</strong> institutionalization, will be studied.<br />

The class will explore in depth the challenges<br />

facing the juvenile justice sys tem <strong>and</strong> discuss<br />

ways in which the system might be improved<br />

<strong>and</strong> advanced. Other modalities such as outside<br />

speakers, films <strong>and</strong>/or field trips may be utilized<br />

during the curse to assist students in more fully<br />

inte grating the concepts explored. Prerequi site:<br />

CRJ 101. A criminal background check is required<br />

CRJ 212 Criminal Investigation <strong>and</strong> Report<br />

Writing<br />

This course is designed to teach students proper<br />

methods in which to prepare a case for possible<br />

court presentation. Included in the course will be<br />

appropriate information Gathering techniques;<br />

report writing; <strong>and</strong> pre-court preparation. Proper<br />

courtroom procedures, witness styles <strong>and</strong> behavior<br />

will also be discussed. Prerequisite: CRJ<br />

101.<br />

CRJ 220 Police Operations<br />

This course concerned with providing the student<br />

with an underst<strong>and</strong>ing of the role police<br />

play in today’s society. Prerequisite: CRJ 101<br />

CRJ 225 Race <strong>and</strong> Ethnicity Issues in Law<br />

Enforcement<br />

The course examines the impact of cultural<br />

diversity on law enforcement to include a discussion<br />

of cultural awareness, bias, prejudice,<br />

training, recruitment <strong>and</strong> cross cultural communication.<br />

Police challenges in engaging with<br />

specific racial/ethnic groups are examined, to<br />

include Asian/Pacific Americans, African-Americans,<br />

Latino/Hispanic Americans, Arab Americans,<br />

Native Americans <strong>and</strong> others. Homel<strong>and</strong><br />

security concerns, racial profi ling <strong>and</strong> hate<br />

crimes are also addressed.<br />

CRJ 230 Independent Study<br />

Student will complete a specialized course of<br />

study administered by an outside of CMCC<br />

training vendor or complete a self directed independent<br />

In this course, a student is placed with a criminal<br />

justice agency <strong>and</strong> is supervised by the criminal<br />

justice internship coordinator. This internship is<br />

graded pass/fail <strong>and</strong> earns a student 3–6 hours<br />

of course credit. To participate in the internship,<br />

students must have completed at least two semesters<br />

<strong>and</strong> be in their second year at CMCC.<br />
