This course provides an overview of all aspects<br />

of the professional fi eld of Early Childhood Education,<br />

including the history, terminology, <strong>and</strong><br />

career options of the fi eld. Also discussed are diverse<br />

programs for young children, qualities <strong>and</strong><br />

skills of care givers, health/safety <strong>and</strong> regulatory<br />

requirements of programs, principles of child development<br />

<strong>and</strong> partnerships with families.<br />

ECE 105 Infant <strong>and</strong> Toddler Curriculum<br />

All domains of development will be reviewed<br />

pertaining to the child between birth to three<br />

years. This review will be used as the context<br />

for developing philoso phy, goals <strong>and</strong> objectives<br />

for planning <strong>and</strong> providing appropriate environments<br />

<strong>and</strong> individualized curriculum. Students<br />

will dis cuss best ways to build relationships with<br />

children, nurture themselves as caregivers, <strong>and</strong><br />

to build successful partnerships with parents.<br />

Prerequisites: ECE 100 <strong>and</strong> PSY 114 or instructor<br />

permission; Co-requisite: ECE 197.<br />

ECE 113 Curriculum <strong>and</strong> Environments for<br />

Young Children<br />

The physical, social, emotional, cognitive <strong>and</strong><br />

language development of young chil dren age<br />

3-8 years will be reviewed in this course, as a<br />

basis for developing philoso phy <strong>and</strong> goals for<br />

curriculum planning <strong>and</strong> development. Students<br />

will discuss <strong>and</strong> observe the diversity of<br />

learning styles, as well as ways to assess <strong>and</strong><br />

evaluate devel opment on an ongoing basis. The<br />

design of developmentally appropriate learning<br />

environments will be presented, <strong>and</strong> stu dents<br />

will participate in h<strong>and</strong>s-on experi ences <strong>and</strong> assignments<br />

throughout the course. Prerequisites:<br />

ECE 100 <strong>and</strong> PSY 114; Co-requisite: ECE 297<br />

or instructor permission.<br />

ECE 150 Language <strong>and</strong> Literacy for Young<br />

Children<br />

Students will be introduced to how children acquire<br />

<strong>and</strong> develop language during the early<br />

years. The roles of the teach teacher in assisting<br />

children through the stages of language <strong>and</strong><br />

communication development will be discussed.<br />

Developmentally appro priate ways to promote<br />

emerging literacy <strong>and</strong> to select <strong>and</strong> use excellent<br />

children’s literature while working in partnerships<br />

with families, will be integral parts of this course.<br />

ECE 197 Infant <strong>and</strong> Toddler Field<br />

Experience<br />

2 Credit (0 Lecture 0 Lab 2 Field Experi ence)<br />

3 Hrs/Wk (3 Hrs. Field Experience) *15 wks<br />

The student will visit, on a weekly basis, a child<br />

care setting where infants <strong>and</strong>/or tod dlers (birth<br />

- 3 years) receive care. Specific techniques for<br />

observing <strong>and</strong> recording children’s behavior<br />

will be required during these visits, <strong>and</strong> as the<br />

student becomes comfortable with the setting,<br />

he or she will also assist the staff in providing<br />

appropriate care <strong>and</strong> education to the children.<br />

Each student is responsible for arranging a<br />

schedule <strong>and</strong> trans portation that will assure the<br />

completion of the required number of hours at<br />

this site. Prerequisites: ECE 100 <strong>and</strong> PSY 114<br />

or instructor permission; Co-requisite: ECE 105.<br />

ECE 198 CDA Prior Learning Experience<br />

Variable Credits (Maximum 9)<br />

An individual with a completed Child Develop ment<br />

Associate (CDA) credential may submit documentation<br />

for evaluation to receive credit when matriculating<br />

into the Early Childhood program.<br />

ECE 199 Apprenticeship<br />

(Prior Learning) (12 Credits)<br />

This catalog listing reflects <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Maine</strong> <strong>Community</strong><br />

College’s recognition of appro priate apprenticeship<br />

experience <strong>and</strong> its credit relationship<br />

to degree requirements. Credit awards vary <strong>and</strong><br />

are considered for posting, at the discretion of<br />

the College, only after successful completion of<br />

the apprenticeship. Documentation of an apprenticeship<br />

<strong>and</strong> its completion are required prior to<br />

consideration of credit award. All apprenticeship<br />

must be author ized by the <strong>Maine</strong> Department of<br />

Labor, Bureau of Employment Services, <strong>Maine</strong><br />

State Training <strong>and</strong> Apprenticeship Council.<br />

ECE 203 Teaching Mathematics to Young<br />

Children<br />

This course introduces ECE students to the extensiveness<br />

of math experiences in programs<br />

for young children. Students will learn to create<br />

a developmentally appropriate math curriculum<br />

for preschool <strong>and</strong> primary school age children.<br />

This course will introduce the students to the<br />

guidelines <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards of mathematics for<br />

young children though NAEYC, NCTM, <strong>and</strong> the<br />

State of <strong>Maine</strong> Learning Guidelines. Pre-requisite:<br />

Completion of a Level 100 Math course.<br />

ECE 205 Education of Children with Special<br />

Needs<br />

3 Credits (3 Lecture 0 Lab 0 Field Experi ence)<br />

3 Hrs/Wk (3 Hrs. Lecture) *15 wks<br />

This course explores the meaning <strong>and</strong> practices<br />

of inclusive early childhood pro grams, as well<br />

as the history of legislation <strong>and</strong> regulations that<br />

have had an impact on early intervention. The<br />

student will learn the process of observing <strong>and</strong><br />

referring chil dren to community agencies, working<br />

in conjunction with parents. Ways to design<br />

appropriate learning environments, create curriculum<br />

with children, <strong>and</strong> evaluate chil dren’s<br />

development will be included in this course. Prerequisites:<br />

ECE 100 <strong>and</strong> PSY 114, or instructor<br />

permission.<br />

ECE 210 Current Topics in Early Childhood<br />

Education<br />

This course explores topics such as, but not<br />

limited to: children’s advocacy, supervision <strong>and</strong><br />

evaluation of staff <strong>and</strong> children, state <strong>and</strong> federal<br />

regulations <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards, accreditation,<br />

<strong>and</strong> visions for future programs for children <strong>and</strong><br />

families. The course will involve discussions,<br />

presentations, student research <strong>and</strong> related<br />

projects. Prerequisites: ECE 100 <strong>and</strong> PSY 114,<br />

or instructor permission.<br />

ECE 297 Pre-School Field Experience<br />

3 Credits (0 Lecture 0 Lab 3 Field Experi ence);<br />

6 Hrs/Wk (6 Hrs Field Experience)<br />

The student will observe <strong>and</strong> assist in an approved<br />

pre-school or school-age child care<br />

setting during the semester, under the supervision<br />

of an experienced early child hood professional.<br />

The student will be expected to apply the<br />
