Residual Feed Intake Information
Split Diamond Ranch is always looking to the future to bring their
customers and their own program profit based genetics. The Buckner’s
have incorporated SAV Homesteader 7282 as a benchmark sire into the
herd, a big reason we feel confident that he is such an important part in
our genetics is because he is a perfect 8-star bull on the Gene Star DNA
system for Feed Efficiency. Split Diamond Ranch decided it was important
to progeny test a sample of his sons in the Midland Bull Test Grow Safe
system to gather data on Residual Feed Intake (RFI) or net feed efficiency
to see if these genetics were indeed feed efficient. Five Homesteader
sons were entered in the Test and posted a combined RFI of -3.06 with
a combined ratio of 113 and combined an ADG ratio of 103. Individually
those sons posted -7.97 ratio 136 #2, -7.0 ratio 133 #3, -3.12 ratio 114,
0, +2.0 over the entire first RFI group of 300+ bulls. One of those sons
was left to sell in the April 8th 2011 sale, and sold to Troy Wheeler of Helena
MT for $5,000. He posted the #3 RFI of -7.0. The other four bulls returned
to be sold in the Split Diamond Ranch sale on March 2nd 2011 where they
averaged $5,500. Improving the feed efficiency of a beef cattle herd can
mean big savings to a producer. One way to achieve this goal is to select
bulls that have been proven to be feed efficient, since 80 to 90 percent of
the genetic improvements comes through the sires. We are committed the
exploration of feed efficient bulls and are looking to
the future of DNA to start the next process to find
these efficient genetics and put them to the real
world test at Midland Test Station.
